Summary

Mo Gawdat is the Vice President of Business Innovation at Google’s [X]。 Applying his superior skills of logic and problem solving to the issue of happiness, he proposes an equation based on an understanding of how the brain takes in and processes joy and sadness。 Then he solves for happy

In 2001, Mo Gawdat, a remarkable thinker and leading technology executive, realized that despite his incredible success, he was desperately unhappy。 A lifelong learner, he attacked the problem as an engineer would, examining all the provable facts and scrupulously applying logic。 Eventually, his countless hours of research and science proved successful, and he discovered the equation for permanent happiness。

Thirteen years later, Mo’s algorithm would be put to the ultimate test。 After the sudden death of his son, Ali, Mo and his family turned to his equation—and it saved him from despair。 In dealing with the horrible loss, Mo found his mission: he would pull off the type of “moonshot” goal that he and his colleagues at Google’s “dream factory,” [X], were always aiming for—he would share his equation with the world and help as many people as possible become happier。

In Solve for Happy Mo questions some of the most fundamental aspects of our existence, shares the underlying reasons for suffering, and plots out a step-by-step process for achieving lifelong happiness and enduring contentment。 He shows us how to view life through a clear lens, teaching us how to dispel the illusions that cloud our thinking; overcome the brain’s deadly defects; and embrace five ultimate truths。

The message in Solve for Happy is clear: humans are designed to be happy。 No matter what obstacles we face, what burdens we bear, what trials we’ve experienced, we can all be content with our present situation and optimistic about the future。

Life Changing!I love, love, Love this book and what it has done for me! Once I started reading it, it was so hard to stop! Mo is an amazing and talented engineer, philosopher, storyteller and author … who delineates a brilliantly clear, mathematical equation to solve the quest for happiness in life … throughout every adversity, heartache and failure。 There is so much wisdom in this book! And I highly recommend it to you—whoever you are and whatever your circumstance。 Thank you Mo! And, thank you Life Changing!I love, love, Love this book and what it has done for me!

It has some useful views and a handful of good ideas but they're only a few。 The one thing that bothered me the most about this book is that every reference to it gives the impression that it's a book based on logic, psychology and a well structured train of thought; until you start reading。 Turns out it's based more on spiritual believes and the author is majorly impacted by religion which didn't work for me in many chapters。 It has some useful views and a handful of good ideas but they're only a few。 The one thing that bothered me the most about this book is that every reference to it gives the impression that it's a book based on logic, psychology and a well structured train of thought; until you start reading。 Turns out it's based more on spiritual believes and the author is majorly impacted by religion which didn't work for me in many chapters。 。。。more

Life changing。。 Brilliant。I like the science based approach taken by Mo。 Mo provides reason for everything he states in the book。 This is the ultimate truth。 As is the case with truth, anyone who explores seriously and with an open mind, will arrive at the same conclusion。

UGH。 In Part 4 of the book, Gawdat "proves" god with a mix of quantum mechanics and the watchmaker argument。 Other irritations: The book uses "he" as the gender neutral pronoun throughout, and labels caring for young children "mothering" throughout。 Published in 2017, this has to have been an editorial choice, not just an oversight。 Parts 1-3 of the book do have a positive Buddhism-adapted-by-an-engineer philosophy。 I can see why this book is popular and has been helpful for others (and I begrud UGH。 In Part 4 of the book, Gawdat "proves" god with a mix of quantum mechanics and the watchmaker argument。 Other irritations: The book uses "he" as the gender neutral pronoun throughout, and labels caring for young children "mothering" throughout。 Published in 2017, this has to have been an editorial choice, not just an oversight。 Parts 1-3 of the book do have a positive Buddhism-adapted-by-an-engineer philosophy。 I can see why this book is popular and has been helpful for others (and I begrudgingly took some things from it myself), but I wouldn't recommend。 。。。more

It's not the best self-help book out there, but as the author himself says, it encourages you to find your own truth, even if it's not the same as his。 It was engaging。 As an engineer, I also appreciate the approach。 It's not the best self-help book out there, but as the author himself says, it encourages you to find your own truth, even if it's not the same as his。 It was engaging。 As an engineer, I also appreciate the approach。 。。。more

Mo Gawdat in Solve for Happy does a great job at approaching the topic of happiness from an analytical viewpoint。 The majority of the book provided little new content but Mo managed to frame spiritual lessons from material such as Eckhart Tolle’ Power of Now in such a compelling way that proved for an interesting read。 The principles included our identification with though, mistaking our ego for our true self, the illusion of time and knowledge as well as our illusion of control in the world。 It Mo Gawdat in Solve for Happy does a great job at approaching the topic of happiness from an analytical viewpoint。 The majority of the book provided little new content but Mo managed to frame spiritual lessons from material such as Eckhart Tolle’ Power of Now in such a compelling way that proved for an interesting read。 The principles included our identification with though, mistaking our ego for our true self, the illusion of time and knowledge as well as our illusion of control in the world。 It was fascinating to follow Gawdat’ thought process behind implementing spiritual principles in the process of dealing with his own personal loss。 3 most impactful ideas from this book:1。 Every negative emotion you will ever feel can be traced back to fear。 If you can afford brain cycles to worry about the future, then by definition, you have nothing to worry about right now。 To take a leap of fear the following questions may prove useful:-What’s the worst that can happen?-So what?-How likely is it?-Is there anything I can do to prevent this scenario?-Can I recover?-What will happen if I do nothing?-What is the best-case scenario?2。 The happiness equation states thatHappiness = Our perception of events/our life - our expectation of how life should behaveI found it interesting that when considering this equation in the greater context of ourdeath, Gawdat adjusted the formula to be:Life’s rough patches as seen in comparison to the truth of mortalityHappiness = the insignificance of events - the diminishment of expectationsWhile this viewpoint may seem nihilistic at first glance, I personally interpreted it as mindset in tough times that compared to the insignificance of our lives, the difficult event at hand has no real impact。 3。 Our happiness is up to us to decipher。 Gawdat states that even if he knows everything about our external world, he would only be able to predict 10% of our long term happiness, leaving 90% to how we personally perceive our reality。 I observe this to be true in all areas of life - the rich can often be unsatisfied and unhappy and those in fantastic life situations can find themselves depressed or wanting more。 Overall this summarises the essence of this book - in response to his sons death, Gawdat took it upon himself to find his own happiness as that is a personal journey we must all undertake and no amount of external factors can replace it。 。。。more

I'm not a fan of this book, and will not recommend it to my friends and family。 I found it a little to technical, but also too simplistic。 The author often referred to his son who has passed away, and told about happiness from his point of view。 I didn't like this approach, and I had expected more useful tips and tricks for achieving happiness。 Instead, the book even made me sad and feeling sorry for the author。 I'm not a fan of this book, and will not recommend it to my friends and family。 I found it a little to technical, but also too simplistic。 The author often referred to his son who has passed away, and told about happiness from his point of view。 I didn't like this approach, and I had expected more useful tips and tricks for achieving happiness。 Instead, the book even made me sad and feeling sorry for the author。 。。。more
