I normally read before bed, but once The Rage of Dragons picked up its pace and got pretty exciting and kind of crazy (in the best way), I had to stop reading in the evenings because the adrenaline rushing through my system would prevent me from falling asleep。 A few dedicated weekend reads later, and I can safely say that this book is indeed great。A classic revenge story in an African-inspired world of magical powers, a shadow realm, war with the natives, warrior castes (determined by genetics) I normally read before bed, but once The Rage of Dragons picked up its pace and got pretty exciting and kind of crazy (in the best way), I had to stop reading in the evenings because the adrenaline rushing through my system would prevent me from falling asleep。 A few dedicated weekend reads later, and I can safely say that this book is indeed great。A classic revenge story in an African-inspired world of magical powers, a shadow realm, war with the natives, warrior castes (determined by genetics), and the occasional dragon。 The action scenes had me on the edge of seat, the plot went in directions I never could have expected, and while our protagonist Tau is beyond awesome, fighting to overcome the physical limitations of the caste he was born into, being thrust into war and the schemes of the rulers of his people, I really think he deserves a nice long vacation by the end of book 1 (but I don't think he'll get it)。I need to read a relaxing book about baking sourdough bread or something after this。。。 。。。more

Wow。 All the stars for this book。 It's been a long time since a book was written in such a way that made it super easy to convey the images in my head。 The fighting scenes were amazing but my favorite had to be the Daaso Headtaker excerpt。。。 I could see it, like a movie。 I was her, I was seeing what she was seeing。。。 and👏 it 👏was 👏amazing。And that was not even the best thing about this book。 The world building。 The world building takes the cake。Can wait to have the second book in my hands。 👏❤ Wow。 All the stars for this book。 It's been a long time since a book was written in such a way that made it super easy to convey the images in my head。 The fighting scenes were amazing but my favorite had to be the Daaso Headtaker excerpt。。。 I could see it, like a movie。 I was her, I was seeing what she was seeing。。。 and👏 it 👏was 👏amazing。And that was not even the best thing about this book。 The world building。 The world building takes the cake。Can wait to have the second book in my hands。 👏❤ 。。。more

I don't think I've ever had so much anxiety while reading a book。 I swear。 I was half convinced my heart was going to beat out of my chest。This war plagued world is one of the most vivid and complex I've ever read about。 It's so interesting to see a completely different structure of hierarchy, where women hold power and status while men largely fight wars and people are divided into castes based on their blood, and get to explore the flaws it has。 The fantasy elements, culture and history of the I don't think I've ever had so much anxiety while reading a book。 I swear。 I was half convinced my heart was going to beat out of my chest。This war plagued world is one of the most vivid and complex I've ever read about。 It's so interesting to see a completely different structure of hierarchy, where women hold power and status while men largely fight wars and people are divided into castes based on their blood, and get to explore the flaws it has。 The fantasy elements, culture and history of the omehia and their feud with the hedeni people is super fascinating too。 Tau is SUCH a compelling character。 I admit there were times I just wanted to throw him across a room because of how irrational he was being, but it made sense for his character。 I love the way his arc progresses from someone who just wants to be happy and doesn't have any ambitions to be great, to someone who's completely blinded by rage and need for revenge which pushes him to do exactly what he didn't want to do before and I particularly loved the ending not just because it gave a satisfying conclusion to the plot, but also because it perfectly ended an important part of his arc。 And ngl, there were so many moments where I just felt so proud about everything he had achieved after working so hard, and the hope he was giving, even unknowingly, to all the Lessers。The side characters were really intriguing too, and the romance was incredibly sweet at times, but I have to admit that I didn't feel as connected to anyone as much as I did to Tau。 That is not to say I didn't love all the characters and the relationships that were made, it's just that I'm greedy and wanted more, especially when it came to his sword brothers。 I'm really excited to see what happens with Queen Tsiora, Kellan, and Jabari in the second book though, cause I think their characters have so much potential that there just wasn't any time to explore。The book is really fast paced which perfectly sets off all the gritty war and sparring scenes。 Most of this book jumps right into the action, which is why I guess we don't get as much time to explore characters and their relationships in depth, but it's also something I love about the book and wouldn't change at all。 Every skirmish, training, and battle scene had something unique to it and presented its own challenges。I'm so excited to read the second book, especially because I feel like the next one's going to have more of the politics that were confined to only the 2nd half here and even higher stakes。 。。。more

Really really awesome, and I'm kicking myself for sitting on this one for so long。 A lot of books deal with the topic of revenge and not all of them get it right, but Tau's single minded determination and his frustration and rage at being denied it is spot on。 What he's willing to do and the sacrifices and pain he's willing to endure for it really carries the reader through the pages, it certainly didnt feel 500+ pages。 It can be frustrating for the reader too, as sometimes our MC willing does s Really really awesome, and I'm kicking myself for sitting on this one for so long。 A lot of books deal with the topic of revenge and not all of them get it right, but Tau's single minded determination and his frustration and rage at being denied it is spot on。 What he's willing to do and the sacrifices and pain he's willing to endure for it really carries the reader through the pages, it certainly didnt feel 500+ pages。 It can be frustrating for the reader too, as sometimes our MC willing does stupid stuff carried away on his anger that you can see coming a mile away, or arguing about a solid plan because its not the fastest route to his revenge (that being said its frustrating but on point for the character, Tau isnt the smartest in the book, something he himself would admit, but he's not stupid。 He usually backs down and goes along with it but it can be a fight。 Sometimes this reflects in his relationship with other characters, or lack thereof, so I'm hoping that can have some development in future books。 ) It's a very character driven book, focusing almost exclusively on Tau and his journey, although we do get maybe 2-4 chapters from another character's perspective, which comes across and fresh rather than disruptive and it's usually used to highlight something that's immediately just happened, before switching back to Tau。 It's not Grimdark thankfully, but it brushes some darker topics and no one feels completly safe。 Luckily its not Got, where your wondering who's on the chopping block this chapter。If i had any problem with the book, its with some of the terms used, which in fairness is mostly a me problem。 Its a fantasy so a lot of titles and groups have unique names, no surpise, but it felt like a lot of them started with an I (Ihashe, Indlovu, Inogyama) etc and it took a while for me to stop getting confused who was who。 Also the author isnt one to hold your hand, he brings up descriptions of these groups as the the story develops, so sometimes their mentioned and you kinda of get it from context but you dont actually know who they are。 Take the prolgue, the author starts of hard and fast and puts you immediately in the battle。 Now while my nerd brain is enjoying some of the cool scenes (and to mention, this author is great at writing combat) part of me couldnt quite get into it because I wasnt hundred percent sure what was happening。 Some people dont like an info dumb, but for me I think I could have enjoyed it more with some additonal infor or a glossary of terms in the back or front of the book。 Like I said its mostly a me problem, which is why I've kept it as a 5 star。 I dont usually have an issue keeping names and terms in check, and I probably would have faired better if I'd written a term or two down as I was reading till i got it down。 It all seems clear cut and simple now looking back (2nd read through perhaps?) 。。。more

I hated this and would've DNFed at chapter 4 if I hadn't heard how good it was。 The macho culture was rage inducing, the stupidity of people's choices, the MC having no personality and overall behaving like a moron。 Not for me。 However, I would potentially recommend for someone new to adult fantasy as a good transition from YA。 That being said, I won't continue on with this series。 I hated this and would've DNFed at chapter 4 if I hadn't heard how good it was。 The macho culture was rage inducing, the stupidity of people's choices, the MC having no personality and overall behaving like a moron。 Not for me。 However, I would potentially recommend for someone new to adult fantasy as a good transition from YA。 That being said, I won't continue on with this series。 。。。more

This was such an exciting read, especially toward the end! I closed this book with so many emotions that I had chills! My only complaint was that Tao's adventures in the academy - while necessary - felt a bit slow。 With a relatively mild case of "Middle-of-the-Story Syndrome", I struggled for a bit in some of the middle chapters。 Hence, the 4 stars instead of 5。 However, I was never so put off by them that I put the book completely down。 That said, I'm *so* looking forward to reading the next bo This was such an exciting read, especially toward the end! I enjoyed this book on several levels。There was clearly a lot of effort put into world building here。 The tired medieval Europe flavored background of traditional fantasy is thrown off here, and we are given something more African in feel, although with its own uniqueness。 I also appreciated the newish ideas on the source of magic, the ways it is used and the "rules" of its use。 The plot, centered around a great civilization (the Omehi) fleeing a catastrophe and fighting to establish life on a n I enjoyed this book on several levels。There was clearly a lot of effort put into world building here。 The tired medieval Europe flavored background of traditional fantasy is thrown off here, and we are given something more African in feel, although with its own uniqueness。 I also appreciated the newish ideas on the source of magic, the ways it is used and the "rules" of its use。 The plot, centered around a great civilization (the Omehi) fleeing a catastrophe and fighting to establish life on a new continent, while losing their capabilities over the generations was well done。 The caste system and what it tells you about what is valued in Omehi culture, is central the story, both from a cultural aspect and a socio-political one。 And the lies the society tells itself to keep maintaining the status quo, ring awfully true to any student of history。I also personally appreciated the fruits of Tau's labor being the cause of a work ethic unlike anyone else around him。 This wasn't the "I woke up one day and was special" trope that permeates fantasy these days, but the "I worked harder than anyone else to become special" idea, that I can accept and admire。 It is one of the admirable traits in this multi-faceted, flawed, stubborn and yet likeable character of Tau that makes you root for him, even when he is a fool。 He reminds me faintly of Ged or Fitz, but again, with a flavor that is unique to Mr。 Winter。The writing isn't bad, but the linear nature of the plot and uninspiring language bump it just out of 5 star territory。 That said, I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series。 If you are tired of standard fantasy tropes and are looking for something different like Kings of the Wyld or The Stormlight Archive then pull this one off the shelf。 4。49 stars! 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I am conflicted about this book。 It was a page turner, with lots of action that draws you in。 So good。 But the whole thing starts with the MC's people invading someone else's land and then being in a 200-year war about it。 Sort of hard to root for that。 There's a serious caste system, which is interesting, but it's not really clear to me。 Nobles are somehow, not really quite described how, better at fighting, because they are, what, bigger? Faster? Some other quality? Makes them untouchable in combat by the lesser classes, except our "hero," of course, or various others who best them at different times。 So, yeah, I don't really get that。Dad is supposedly this amazing warrior, and then he is helpless against these nobles? I mean, literally not even any match at all? While there is this outward enemy, most of this whole book revolves around fighting within people on the same side, either noble/lesser conflict or training conflict。 Almost all the fighting is with people on the same side, which I suppose is good, because we get so little info on the enemy。 It's this vague "them" with special powers。 Okay, then our "hero。" There has to be some device to motivate the MC, so, sure, revenge is a good enough one。 His approach is weird to me, though。 Instead of just figuring out the most immediate and direct way of killing these men for vengeance, his approach is, I will become the greatest fighter ever, so I can find some way to concoct a public battle to kill them legally and openly。 Maybe revenge works that way?My biggest head scratcher was that this protagonist that the author takes great care in stating several times is no special guy, not bigger, not stronger, this guy who gets kicked around regularly, begins turning into this other-level fighter, and I'm not buying it。 Other guys put in the same kind of time as him, the same kind of training。 How does he at some point become this untouchable fighter? It does not feel plausible to me。 How does getting killed repeatedly by demons in this other plane somehow transform him into an more-than-elite warrior? It's just weird and doesn't make sense to me。 His singlemindedness and blockheadedness are not dealbreakers for me。 I mean, while it does make him sort of unlikeable, I get that characters have to have flaws, and this is his。 It just actually does make him sort of unlikeable。Dragons? Pretty much non-entities in this book。Even with those negatives/issues/qualms, I was drawn along in the story and never thought of bailing, so I have to rate it accordingly。 And I'll probably read the next one in the series as well, so I can find out more about what this enemy is about, this enemy that seems to me is just protecting their own land from invaders。 。。。more

This book was really good。 I think the world building was 10/10 and I really liked Tau character。 He was not a perfect character which made reading him great。 He made a lot of dumb decisions that were driven solely by his emotions which makes sense due his past。 I could tell that a lot of people were going to die in this book so I wasn’t that shocked/saddened when they did。 I hope in the next book we’re able to see Tau come to terms with his revenge story and start taking the other people in his This book was really good。 I think the world building was 10/10 and I really liked Tau character。 He was not a perfect character which made reading him great。 He made a lot of dumb decisions that were driven solely by his emotions which makes sense due his past。 I could tell that a lot of people were going to die in this book so I wasn’t that shocked/saddened when they did。 I hope in the next book we’re able to see Tau come to terms with his revenge story and start taking the other people in his life more seriously (idk how I feel about the romance that was hinted between him and the queen) I hope we get more POV chapters from kellan or Hadith because those were the two characters I was most interested in other then Tau Overall the book is a solid 4/5 for me。 I think the plot and world building was fantastic but I didn’t have a strong connection with any character other then Tau (hopefully that changes in the next book) 。。。more

Borrowed from a library but I didn't have time to finish reading it, and while I know it isn't fair to judge something until seeing it to the end, I (kinda?) want to partially put blame on the novel。 I had two months to read it and unexpectedly I couldn't redo my loan for the third time, so I had to give up。And partially at least, the reason why I didn't manage to finish it is because my interest in it simply vanished at one point。 The book isn't bad, far from it, but I think my own expectations Borrowed from a library but I didn't have time to finish reading it, and while I know it isn't fair to judge something until seeing it to the end, I (kinda?) want to partially put blame on the novel。 I had two months to read it and unexpectedly I couldn't redo my loan for the third time, so I had to give up。And partially at least, the reason why I didn't manage to finish it is because my interest in it simply vanished at one point。 The book isn't bad, far from it, but I think my own expectations were a bit off。 The novel starts brilliantly with a fiery explosion of carnage and dragon fire as a race of people are forced to land on island that does not want them there。 It is a thrilling start that does not slow down until everything is in flames。At this point, I totally understood why there was so much hype behind this book, but unfortunately, at least in my view, this was a prologue that is almost entirely seperate from the rest of the story。 When the novel presents its main character, a young boy who wants to be the very best warrior that there has ever been, I began to lose my interest。 I'm not entirely sure why I'm put off so much by these young characters waiting to fulfill their destiny, the same thing happened with Malice, but I just am。 Perhaps its because the story beats feel so similar every time, there is a certain expectation how they will grow and take that role of a great hero even if no one believes in them, or if I just prefer older characters。The world is unique which is one of the greatest accomplishments here, and a reason alone to read it, as there are not many fantasy novels so heavily inspired by African culture。 There were other interesting ideas there too, especially when it comes to magic, but the main story simply failed to inspire me to keep going。 If I had the time, I would have finished it, and perhaps one day anyway will, but for now after reading more than 300 pages, it just felt okay。 。。。more
