Summary

London's Slough House is where the washed-up MI5 spies go to while away what's left of their failed careers。 The "slow horses," as they’re called, have all disgraced themselves in some way to get relegated here。 Maybe they messed up an op badly and can't be trusted anymore。 Maybe they got in the way of an ambitious colleague and had the rug yanked out from under them。 Maybe they just got too dependent on the bottle—not unusual in this line of work。 One thing they all have in common, though, is they all want to be back in the action。 And most of them would do anything to get there─even if it means having to collaborate with one another。

Now the slow horses have a chance at redemption。 An old Cold War-era spy is found dead on a bus outside Oxford, far from his usual haunts。 The despicable, irascible Jackson Lamb is convinced Dickie Bow was murdered。 As the agents dig into their fallen comrade's circumstances, they uncover a shadowy tangle of ancient Cold War secrets that seem to lead back to a man named Alexander Popov, who is either a Soviet bogeyman or the most dangerous man in the world。 How many more people will have to die to keep those secrets buried?

Second in the ‘Slough House’ series, this one didn’t grip me。 I’ve been told the series just ascends in quality and thrill。 When I liked the first, Slow Horses I picked up Dead Lions with some expectations。 The first half was tight, thrilling and yet full of witty and sometimes hilarious dialogues。 The second turned out a bit of a melodrama from a B grade movie。 Still, ok enough for me to look forward to the third instalment。

See my review for book one and just copy and paste really。 Another triumph of a book, not a word wasted。 My only quibble with this one is that I have no idea what 'DEAD LIONS' has to do with the plot? I’m enjoying this series

Absolutely love this series。 A lot like John le Carre but mean。

Lizzy

A great sequel to the last book。 Even more twists and turns abs character development。 I can’t wait to see where these characters are going to end up and go。

Colin Hunt

So, so。 Not as good as Slow Horses。

Enjoyable, but my preference is for a more subtle spy novel (e。g。 of the George Smiley type) with the action packed finish a little too much for me。

This is the second volume in the Slough House series。 It grabbed me from the start。There are two new members at Slough House who also share an office。 They don't trust each other, but the other members don't trust the new ones either。 A former agent is found dead on a bus。 Jackson Lamb does not believe in natural death and sends two of his agents out to investigate。 It soon turns out that the connection must be related to the Cold War and should be reactivated after so many years of 'sleeper'。At This is the second volume in the Slough House series。 It grabbed me from the start。There are two new members at Slough House who also share an office。 They don't trust each other, but the other members don't trust the new ones either。 A former agent is found dead on a bus。 Jackson Lamb does not believe in natural death and sends two of his agents out to investigate。 It soon turns out that the connection must be related to the Cold War and should be reactivated after so many years of 'sleeper'。At the same time, two other Slough House members are seconded by an avid MI5 agent to babysit a Russian oligarch。 One is murdered and the other is out for revenge。It was again exciting from the first to the last page。 You get to know the 'hard' core of the Slough House better and better。(4½) 。。。more

I am definitely hooked on this series。 The cover blurb sums it up nicely, "London's Slough House is where the washed-up M15 spies go to while away what's left of their career"。 It is ruled over by Jackson Lamb, a wonderful creation。 He reminds me of Ignatius J。 Reilly from "A Confederacy of Dunces", if Ignatius where meaner, more violent, and had had a career as a brutally effective spy in cold war Berlin before taking over what seems to be a pointless job。 The first thing is that this is a grea I am definitely hooked on this series。 The cover blurb sums it up nicely, "London's Slough House is where the washed-up M15 spies go to while away what's left of their career"。 It is ruled over by Jackson Lamb, a wonderful creation。 He reminds me of Ignatius J。 Reilly from "A Confederacy of Dunces", if Ignatius where meaner, more violent, and had had a career as a brutally effective spy in cold war Berlin before taking over what seems to be a pointless job。 The first thing is that this is a great thriller。 A retired spy dies on a bus。 He was poisoned。 The path leads back to the days before the Berlin Wall fell。 There is intrigue within intrigue。 The last 100 pages are suspenseful and exciting。The second thing is that Herron is a wonderful writer who is having fun putting together these books。 He clearly gets a kick out of telling the story from unusual angles and misdirection and alternating humor and darkness or, at times mixing them together。 He uses smart effects, without seeming merely clever。 This novel begins with a description of Slough House from the perspective of a cat who sneaks in。 It ends with a similar view from the point of view of a mouse。 The scenes aren't cute, they are sharp, and the conceit works on a bunch of levels。The third thing is that Herron is a good writer line by line。 He has wonderful sharp dialog;"And you've told me everything?""Yes," he lied。"I want regular updates。 Every tiny detail。 Good or bad。""Of course", he lied。 Great cliff hangers;"Nobody's going to die", said Lamb。 Inaccurately as it turned out。The phone rang。 I also got a surprise visit from something my father would say;"For fuck's sake, Ho, she'll tell me herself soon as----""And who's 'she' ?" Catherine asked。 "the cat's mother?"The two men shared an unlikely moment of mystified brotherhood。It is great fun to discover a new series。 。。。more

This book lacks the unique writing style of #1 and the story was not as interesting。 Apple+ is serializing #1 and #2, looking forward to seeing them。

This was a fun book to read, especially with the ultra-exciting ending。 Herron ditches most of the crappy writing style from the first book (staccato quirkiness that when done poorly makes me wretch a bit) but keeps the humor and stays faithful to the theme of low-rent spies。 It’s almost brilliant how Herron crafts a thrilling ending that still leaves our cast of characters locked in at Slough House as a bunch of nobodies。3。5 stars rounded up for the fun, even though a bit implausible, finale。 D This was a fun book to read, especially with the ultra-exciting ending。 Herron ditches most of the crappy writing style from the first book (staccato quirkiness that when done poorly makes me wretch a bit) but keeps the humor and stays faithful to the theme of low-rent spies。 It’s almost brilliant how Herron crafts a thrilling ending that still leaves our cast of characters locked in at Slough House as a bunch of nobodies。3。5 stars rounded up for the fun, even though a bit implausible, finale。 Definitely looking forward to the next book。 。。。more

Such great characters and writing。

Brian Moore

Definitely a roller coaster。 Sets off at a steady pace, then a rush, then another lengthy climb where, for just a brief few pages you wonder if it’s going to disappoint before hurtling downhill to a breathless conclusion。 Excellent example of a spook book。

Charlie Cassidy

Guilty laugh out loud dialogue that will make the PC brigade apoplectic

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Another satisfying book, love Herrons humor and descriptions。 Pacing could be slow, wish it got to the high points and tension earlier。 Also no Peter Judd in this book, wish it were more political

Another very enjoyable re-re-read。 New characters added to the mix, a satisfying plot and great descriptions of places I wish I could revisit。 I miss London。

This is the second in the Slough House series。 As I mentioned in an earlier review of Mick Herron's "Slow Horses", comparison to John LeCarre is an automatic reaction。 Though they are both British espionage novelists, they are covering very different ground。 Jackson Lamb's wry Slough house is not George Smiley's dire Circus nor does Lamb suffer the bouts of existential nausea or intense self doubt as George Smiley。 Yet, Lamb is an entertaining character, a sort of Rabelaisian spy/civil servant, This is the second in the Slough House series。 As I mentioned in an earlier review of Mick Herron's "Slow Horses", comparison to John LeCarre is an automatic reaction。 Though they are both British espionage novelists, they are covering very different ground。 Jackson Lamb's wry Slough house is not George Smiley's dire Circus nor does Lamb suffer the bouts of existential nausea or intense self doubt as George Smiley。 Yet, Lamb is an entertaining character, a sort of Rabelaisian spy/civil servant, whose gross exterior hides a keen intellect。 In this novel a Soviet sleeper cell gets jolted back to life in the era of 911。As in Slow Horses several story lines and characters are skillfully juggled, the author quickly switching back and forth between them for maximum suspense。 The book is compulsively readable and, to use the awful cliché, impossible to put down。 。。。more

Beautiful, well written, mordantly funny, intelligently plotted。。。 Mick Herron is my favorite find for 2020。 Heartily recommended。 Can’t wait to read more

Still loving Mick Herron's staggeringly rich, insightful, character-driven writing - he finds such psychological depth in the tiniest of moments and gestures, that I just want to hang out with this slate of characters all the time。 My favourites remain Jackson Lamb, Catherine Standish and Roderick Ho, each of whom display their flaws alongside their competencies in a way that feels real and lived-in。Sadly, this time, the novel's driving narrative is a bit too bonkers for my liking。 The slow hors Still loving Mick Herron's staggeringly rich, insightful, character-driven writing - he finds such psychological depth in the tiniest of moments and gestures, that I just want to hang out with this slate of characters all the time。 My favourites remain Jackson Lamb, Catherine Standish and Roderick Ho, each of whom display their flaws alongside their competencies in a way that feels real and lived-in。Sadly, this time, the novel's driving narrative is a bit too bonkers for my liking。 The slow horses of Slough House find themselves following the trail of a Russian spy from the Cold War, which, to be fair, allows the book to start off at an exciting clip - full of espionage and tracking and clues laid in plain sight。But it soon starts to feel like a series of tropes all piled on top of one another - from a tiny, sleepy English village in the Cotswolds, to a high-rise meeting with high stakes。 None of it feels quite as palpably believable as the first novel did。 I will give some credit where credit is due - Herron remains a master of drawing all his characters and plot threads towards a climax, as you suddenly see how everything is going to dovetail together。 But I wasn't that big a fan of the main plot, which moves rather too quickly from chillingly credible to ridiculously melodramatic。 It's all actually。。。 kind of silly, and I couldn't quite believe the many little plot twists (make that contrivances), especially in the second half of the novel, that Herron was trying to tell me his MI5 spies would happily go along with。 Still love the concept and characters though, so I'm definitely gonna stick with this series!3 to 3。5 stars 。。。more

This follow up didn’t disappoint。 Smart, funny, original。 I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of spending time with the Slow Horses。

Another brilliant instalment of Mick Herron’s MI5 misfits。 Great story! Thoroughly recommend if you’re looking for a spy novel with plenty of humour!!
