Admiral McRaven takes ten strong characteristics of human behavior such as humility, compassion, humor and duty and weaves stories of people he has met during his life and historical figures that exemplified these attributes。 The over riding theme throughout is the vast majority are ordinary people that step up in their lives to make a difference。 I have read all three of Admiral McRaven's books and honestly belief he is man whose core values hold true to what he writes。 Admiral McRaven takes ten strong characteristics of human behavior such as humility, compassion, humor and duty and weaves stories of people he has met during his life and historical figures that exemplified these attributes。 The over riding theme throughout is the vast majority are ordinary people that step up in their lives to make a difference。 I have read all three of Admiral McRaven's books and honestly belief he is man whose core values hold true to what he writes。 。。。more

I have listed to and read several of Admiral McRaven’s speeches。 This is the first of his books I have read。 I have enjoyed his simplicity and style honed through his service as a Navy Seal culminating in his service as a 4-star admiral and commander of the US Special Operations Command。 There is nothing profound in the ten points of the Hero’s Code, but timely and important reminders for everyone about the simplicity of being a hero。 McRaven discuses timeless virtues culminating in each chapter I have listed to and read several of Admiral McRaven’s speeches。 This is the first of his books I have read。 I have enjoyed his simplicity and style honed through his service as a Navy Seal culminating in his service as a 4-star admiral and commander of the US Special Operations Command。 There is nothing profound in the ten points of the Hero’s Code, but timely and important reminders for everyone about the simplicity of being a hero。 McRaven discuses timeless virtues culminating in each chapter with a personal promise to live the principle。 For McRaven these principles are the internal code of conduct that “drives the human race to explore, to nurture, to comfort, to inspire, and to laugh so that societies can flourish。” He believes, “There is a hero in all of us。” In each chapter he focuses on of a different the virtue of heroism, using military examples from both history and his personal experiences。 He often connects the extraordinary with the mundane。 For example, in the chapter on duty, the author begins with the well-documented story of John McCain’s horrific captivity in Vietnam。 Then he relates the more prosaic—yet compelling—anecdote about a soldier in Afghanistan whose refusal to let anyone through her gate without authorization from her sergeant caused McRaven to be late to a meeting with President Barack Obama。 Throughout, the author repeatedly shows how a person need not be placed in an exceptional moment to act exceptionally。 After describing the courageous actions of Medal of Honor recipient Ralph Johnson, who saved others by falling on a grenade during the Vietnam War, McRaven notes, “for most of us…our sacrifices do not come in one shining moment of extraordinary valor。” Instead, those sacrifices come from living by a moral code every day。 Spoiler Alert - The 10 virtues are: Courage - We all have our lines in the sand, those fears that keep us from being courageous。 Take one step forward and fight injustice。 And if you take that one step forward you will find the courage you seek, the courage necessary to overcome your fears and be the hero you long to be。 Humility - Humility is born of respect。 Respect for what we do not know。 Respect for what we cannot readily see。 But out of this humble approach to life, we are more likely to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us。 And we are much more likely to treat others as we would have them treat us。 Sacrifice - Learning to sacrifice is easy。 Start by giving a little of yourself, every day。 Give a little time to your friends。 Give a little of your treasure to a worthy cause。 Give a little love to your family。 Every day—without fail—give a little of yourself。 Integrity - But no matter how mightily you might struggle, the world will believe in you, if they know you to be honest, trustworthy, of good character and good faith。 Never fear the path that is rocky, steep, and treacherous: There you will find men and women of integrity。 Compassion - Life can make us selfish, skew our priorities toward work, wealth, and image。 Our character, the qualities that make us most human, most able to fit well into society, can be diminished by the trappings of modernity。 Fortunately, the fix is easy - small acts of kindness to forge your character, strengthen your soul, and keep you connected to the rest of the world。 Perseverance - The challenges you face are the same ones that billions of people have encountered throughout history。 Those who have conquered the obstacles before them, have one thing in common。 They never gave up。 Neither should you! Duty - We must do our job well, not because it serves our interests, but because it serves the interests of others。 Duty is a recognition that you have a responsibility to your fellow man and woman。 It is an unselfish act, whether great or small, that contributes to the welfare of humanity。 That is what makes it so powerful。 If you want to be a hero, it’s easy。 Just do your duty! Hope - Each of us has something that we are good at—something we can give to others that makes them hopeful。 A talent that someone else in the world is lacking。 All heroes have something that makes them unique。 Find that talent and use it to inspire others—to give hope, to make tomorrow a better day。 Humor - If you want to show courage, laugh in the face of danger。 If you want to show humility, laugh at yourself。 If you want to give hope, use humor to lighten the darkness。 If you want to persevere through tough times, you had better learn to laugh。 Find your comedic voice and use your wit to save those around you, to free them from their sorrow, to give them joy, and to help them see the humor in the darkest of times。 Forgiveness - Forgiveness will never be easy。 It takes a strong person to forgive。 But the act of forgiving will strengthen your character immeasurably and it will rid you of hatred that is the demise of so many good men and women。 Be the victor, not the victim。 Learn to forgive。 。。。more

Admiral McRaven gives several principles and examples of how heroes live。 Why I started this book: Needed a short, feel good audio。Why I finished it: Navy SEALs are more idealistic than they realize and it's lovely。 It's nice to be reminded that their are people dedicated to saving the world。。。 and that I can and should be one of them。 Admiral McRaven gives several principles and examples of how heroes live。 Why I started this book: Needed a short, feel good audio。Why I finished it: Navy SEALs are more idealistic than they realize and it's lovely。 It's nice to be reminded that their are people dedicated to saving the world。。。 and that I can and should be one of them。 。。。more

I was less than fully moved by McRaven's adulation of some of his heroes, and thought it ended rather abruptly。 I was less than fully moved by McRaven's adulation of some of his heroes, and thought it ended rather abruptly。 。。。more

FYI I checked this book out from the NYPL and now, after reading it, I definitely want to own my own copy。 Therefore, among many things, Admiral McRaven has reinforced my commitment to capitalism。 And right after I finish here, I am going to call the bookstore to see if they have a signed copy for sale because getting a signed copy would be really cool。 All of this great book reading is turning me into。。。what? These 5 stars are for what is actually here, though I would’ve loved a much longer exposition from Admiral McRaven。 Still confirms for me that I will read whatever he puts out—an incredible American。

3。75 - I enjoyed some of the stories shared in this short book。 I am biased because of the UT connection but it is a good little inspirational book to have on hand。 However many of these lessons are your typical points of encouragement with a different flare when you look at them from the lens of the people in this book。

Another elegant little volume from an inspirational story-teller。 Ten rules to live by: courage, humility, sacrifice, integrity, compassion, perseverance, duty, hope, humor and forgiveness。 Props to Bill McCraven for his heart and passion。

For me this was not as good as his book on making your bed but it is still worthy to be read。 I cannot imagine many of the stories he tells about those who make the military their lives。 So I appreciate hearing about them and the way they have decided to lead their lives。

I want everyone to read this book to be reminded of what's truly valuable in life - a moral compass and a code for becoming the best person you can be。 In our self-absorbed culture that makes all truth subjective and relative, McRaven's Hero Code is the antidote that calls every person to step outside of themselves to find and respond to a higher purpose。 I want everyone to read this book to be reminded of what's truly valuable in life - a moral compass and a code for becoming the best person you can be。 In our self-absorbed culture that makes all truth subjective and relative, McRaven's Hero Code is the antidote that calls every person to step outside of themselves to find and respond to a higher purpose。 。。。more
