Summary

For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic。 This one is personal。。。because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war。 Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam。 From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit。 Pitted against enemies inside his own department and forced to make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, Bosch goes on the hunt for a killer whose true face will shock him。

Yaaasssss。 This is my kind of mystery series, but if my given name was Hieronymus I would make people call me Hieronymus。 What's the fun of an audacious name if you just shorten it to Harry? In this one, Detective Hieronymus Bosch is called out to a body found in a drain pipe。 The deceased turns out to be Billy Meadows, an old war buddy with whom he performed search-and-destroy missions in the Viet Cong's massive underground tunnel complexes (I can't imagine a more terrifying battle environment。) Yaaasssss。 This is my kind of mystery series, but if my given name was Hieronymus I would make people call me Hieronymus。 What's the fun of an audacious name if you just shorten it to Harry? In this one, Detective Hieronymus Bosch is called out to a body found in a drain pipe。 The deceased turns out to be Billy Meadows, an old war buddy with whom he performed search-and-destroy missions in the Viet Cong's massive underground tunnel complexes (I can't imagine a more terrifying battle environment。) Hollywood PD tries to pull Hieronymus off the case, but because he traced an item pawned by the victim just days before, that lead brings him to the FBI's attention。 They're working a bank robbery, and it turns out Meadows' item was stolen out of a lockbox。 With potential insight into the vic's life and his excellent investigative skills, it's a no-brainer for the FBI to pull Bosch into a special assignment with agents Eleanor Wish and John Rourke。Hieronymus Bosch is a Vietnam veteran, and the novel devotes a great deal of focus on Tunnel Rats and the unimaginably terrifying work they did。 I'd heard of them before, but didn't know too much until reading this novel, and wow - those guys had nerves of steel。 Bosch still deals with nightmares 20 years after the war, but it's better than the heroin addiction Meadows picked up in the service and struggled with to the end。Full admission: I liked other elements of The Black Echo much more than the mystery itself。 I picked out the villains early on, but Connelly didn't work too hard to hide them。 I want to continue this series because of Bosch。 The man smoked and drank coffee endlessly (making me gag over his imagined breath), but I find him an intriguing, sympathetic character that I want to follow through this series。 。。。more

After reading Bloodwork I was hooked on Connelly's incredibly engaging writing style。 Perfect amount of detail that makes you feel like you are there, humour poked into a well crafted storyline that felt authentic。 After reading Bloodwork I was hooked on Connelly's incredibly engaging writing style。 Perfect amount of detail that makes you feel like you are there, humour poked into a well crafted storyline that felt authentic。 。。。more

A Page Turner with a lot of TwistsHave read just about every Bosch book 。 Decided to read the first , this was the best one。 Wish I had started with this one。 Its full of twists and turns and of course Bosch, is be investigated again。 Really liked the book。 Mr。 Connelly, ranks up there with Jeffery Denver, with his crime novels。 Wish there more Bosch books,to read the books are addicting。

I’ve read several Bosch books of various stages in his career。 I’ve enjoyed most of them but not this one。 I thought the storyline was too dragged out with too much detail。 The outcome was weird and having come across fond references to Eleanor Wish in later books I cannot work out how this was the beginning of a friendship that matures。 I was too far in to abort this novel and although it sets the scene for future investigations in my opinion this was not Michaels finest work。

The Black Echo was my very first Michael Connelly novel I picked up but surprisingly this is the first time after many times starting then losing interest a couple pages in。 I’ve finally read through this book and read through it I did front to back in two days。 Connelly’s first book made me feel like I was reading his 30th book, it’s amazing it reads like he’s been doing this forever。 In a way he and his titular character Harry Bosch share a similarity, being born for their crafts, writing and The Black Echo was my very first Michael Connelly novel I picked up but surprisingly this is the first time after many times starting then losing interest a couple pages in。 I’ve finally read through this book and read through it I did front to back in two days。 Connelly’s first book made me feel like I was reading his 30th book, it’s amazing it reads like he’s been doing this forever。 In a way he and his titular character Harry Bosch share a similarity, being born for their crafts, writing and homicide。 The story kept me invested to the point I wanted to hurry through whatever task I was doing if it let me get back to reading so I can find out what happened next。 I was able to follow the story without getting lost and still managed to be surprised when dealt with a heavy blow。 Overall I’m finally glad I made myself read this book and definitely a great entry book to the world of Michael Connelly and Harry Bosch。 An amazing start to a series that has yet to fail in keeping me invested and entertained。 。。。more

This is my first Harry Bosch book。 I would rate this book 3。5 stars, but round it down to 3。 This book kept my interest throughout as it was well paced with interesting characters and a solid mystery。 There were a few things that I wasn’t thrilled about。 I noticed that the author seemed obsessed with Bosch’s smoking habit - every single scene we are told if Bosch smoked or not and how he disposed of the cigarette ash。 Okay。 There is a strong noir feeling to this book, and I am not really a fan o This is my first Harry Bosch book。 I would rate this book 3。5 stars, but round it down to 3。 This book kept my interest throughout as it was well paced with interesting characters and a solid mystery。 There were a few things that I wasn’t thrilled about。 I noticed that the author seemed obsessed with Bosch’s smoking habit - every single scene we are told if Bosch smoked or not and how he disposed of the cigarette ash。 Okay。 There is a strong noir feeling to this book, and I am not really a fan of the noir style, so be forewarned。I liked that the mystery was complex enough to be interesting but the story never bogged down due to it being overly complex。 I also liked the characters (Bosch’s smoking habit excepted)。 I think I will enjoy this series。 。。。more

Ya había leído Connelly。Llego a Harry Bosch después de ver varias temporadas de la excelente serie。La adaptación a la serie es magnífica pero la novela no tiene desperdicio。 Un detective sólido y una trama muy bien construida y resuelta。Chapeau!

I find some of the reviews of this book mind-boggling and tiresome。 It was published in ‘92。 That means he was probably writing it in ‘89 or ‘90。 Cell phones were not common then。 Cellphones in 89/90 cost like 3 grand, so yeah, they would have been running to pay-phones a lot。 “Connelly did this just so this could happen later on。”That IS how writing a book works。And some of the things that seem cliche now (the folder he tossed in the backseat), wouldn’t have been so cliche then。I thought it wa I find some of the reviews of this book mind-boggling and tiresome。 It was published in ‘92。 That means he was probably writing it in ‘89 or ‘90。 Cell phones were not common then。 Cellphones in 89/90 cost like 3 grand, so yeah, they would have been running to pay-phones a lot。 “Connelly did this just so this could happen later on。”That IS how writing a book works。And some of the things that seem cliche now (the folder he tossed in the backseat), wouldn’t have been so cliche then。I thought it was an excellent, fun read。 Were some of the scenes kind of lacking in energy?

First book in the Harry Bosch series。 I also started watching the tv series。 It got a little confusing so I decided to finish reading the book。 Harry Bosch is a one of a kind police detective who by his actions tends to ruffle a lot of feathers。 Nevertheless he still gets the job done。 This was a very intricate story that didn't get resolved until the last few pages。 Isn't that what a good mystery is supposed to do? Bosch is called to a death of a junkie that he actually recognizes from his days as a 'tunnel rat' in Vietnam。 He hooks up with the FBI in trying to tie his co-rat's death to a huge bank robbery a few months earlier, and hijinks (and sex) ensue。 The interpersonal bits were fairly pedestrian, but the plot was fun。 Did not make me want to crawl around underground anytime in the immediate future。 Bosch is called to a death of a junkie that he actually recognizes from his days as a 'tunnel rat' in Vietnam。 He hooks up with the FBI in trying to tie his co-rat's death to a huge bank robbery a few months earlier, and hijinks (and sex) ensue。 The interpersonal bits were fairly pedestrian, but the plot was fun。 Did not make me want to crawl around underground anytime in the immediate future。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Couldn’t decide between 2。5 and 3, but rounded up because of the final twist that I did not expect。 Book is definitely old and at times relies on harmful stereotypes to get points across。 It was very, very slow to start, and I had a lot of trouble getting into it at first, though the last hour or so was a real roller coaster ride that I could not tear my eyes away from。 The cop lingo was a bit heavy in places for my taste, which was annoying (sometimes confusing) but not as distracting as it cou Couldn’t decide between 2。5 and 3, but rounded up because of the final twist that I did not expect。 Book is definitely old and at times relies on harmful stereotypes to get points across。 It was very, very slow to start, and I had a lot of trouble getting into it at first, though the last hour or so was a real roller coaster ride that I could not tear my eyes away from。 The cop lingo was a bit heavy in places for my taste, which was annoying (sometimes confusing) but not as distracting as it could’ve been。 Just not really my style。 The thing that bothered me the most about this novel, though, was the dialogue。 It was very wooden and unnatural at times, and I couldn’t figure out why the characters spoke the way they did。 It bordered on unrealistic and was just strange, and I found myself thinking several times as I read that, “no one actually talks like this。” The characterization was good and I felt all characters were well-developed。 Not sure if Bosch himself was particularly likable, but his deal with Wish at the end to get justice for Sharkey was a good move。 Not sure I will continue with Bosch novels, but this one did keep me entertained! 。。。more
