The ending was so good, but damn it didn’t need to take 800 pages to get there。 Once more, the sexism in WoT is mind numbing, but I slog through it, the overly detailed prose, and hundreds of pages of nothingness because I really do care about the overarching storyline and all the characters。 I talked myself out of a 4 stars and into 3 stars while writing this。 See you next time, WoT- you really don’t deserve my continual reading, but I’ll be back for #7。

So far the best of the entire Series right beside The Shadow Rising。 In places I thought things were being rushed but I guess it was necessary to set the premise for the actual story that will begin in the next book。 But we all know there is no beginning nor ending。

Literature & Lofi - Benjamin Blackmore

Every reader has their favourite Wheel of Time book。。。 And this might be mine。The Dragon Reborn is assembling his army and calling for others to unite to join his cause in fighting the Dark One in the final battle。 But before they can reach that point, Rand must navigate the political minefield to gain favour from different factions。 Obviously, if ya know politics at all。 It is not going to be an easy task。Lord of Chaos is a fantasy book that plays out at a leisurely pace。 It is somewhat lacking Every reader has their favourite Wheel of Time book。。。 And this might be mine。The Dragon Reborn is assembling his army and calling for others to unite to join his cause in fighting the Dark One in the final battle。 But before they can reach that point, Rand must navigate the political minefield to gain favour from different factions。 Obviously, if ya know politics at all。 It is not going to be an easy task。Lord of Chaos is a fantasy book that plays out at a leisurely pace。 It is somewhat lacking the grandeur and epic action scenes, but what we are given is some flawlesss interactions between all the characters。 This is definitely the book where the characters are branching out and mingling as if speed dating with one another。 We're also beginning to see that characters are becoming a shadow of who they were。 Situations are changing them。 They have to adapt and grow。 Finally I feel like Rand is getting some serious development and it feels like all of the characters are sat on the cusp of a line ready to take accelerate and kick their arcs into gear。Nynaeve continues to be a stand out character for me。 Developing in knowledge, competency and certainly getting some of the juicier storylines in this book。 Egwene isn't far behind, her storyline for the past few books seemed to be at a standstill but finally we are begin to see her grow and move in what I imagine is a pivotal direction。Mat's pov remains the most enjoyable and interesting perspective to follow。 While he hasn't much to do in this book, we are given some refreshing insights into the chaos of the world surrounding him。 And it goes without saying, that he provides the best comic relief。 Frustratingly Perrin remains AWOL for the majority of the books, but what glimmers we do get into his story, indicate that he too has great things lying ahead。The supporting characters retain their complexity and truly provide a deeper perspective to the story。 It's great to see them finally contributing more importantly to the story and impacting character arcs more profoundly。 I really enjoyed following the Forsaken and the rebellious Aes Sedai speculated to be Black Ajah。 We're beginning to see their motivations and desires, all while they carefully and cunningly navigate relationships with one another to ensure that they come out on top。 We get some huge moments which will have tremendous implications for the storyline down the road。 Foreshadowing resumes to be scattered throughout the pages and with so many characters and storylines I have no doubt that readers won't pick up everything on the first run through。I'm thankful we moved away from following Aiel culture and returned to the Aes Sedai。 Now that we're experiencing a lot of internal conflicts, events in the White Towers faction of wonder women is only becoming more and more intriguing。We're beginning to see consequences for the decisions characters make as well as experiencing the fallout and impacting the choices that they make are affecting other characters。The romance is still something left to be desired in this story。 I'm fine with the exploration of polyamory, heck in fantasy stories it's quite a common trope, but I feel like Robert Jordan kinda needed to set it up a little better with a little more realism as to how the characters involved would handle it 。 Another new romance introduced kinda came out of nowhere but I do ship it thanks to the raw emotions and impulsiveness included in that arc。Once we get to the home stretch and hit the climax, the pacing skyrockets。 We're gifted with so much action and set up for next book。 It's not going to be every fantasy readers favourite installment, especially due to the lack of action。 However, there are huge revelations, big character moments and some wonderful attention to detail when it comes to blossoming character relationships。 I feel like Robert Jordan is finding that fine balance to truly throw his characters on the most epic adventures possible in this dark, magical and vast world he has created。 The Final Verdict: 9 out of 10 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Almost halfway done with the series and boy is it getting good。 The characters get more and more complex! Nynaeve is still my favorite, and I love how she was able to discover how to Heal stilled people。 And Egwene is the Amyrlin Seat! Quite frankly, I did NOT see that coming。 Rand and the Asha'man are super epic and the Black Tower is the coolest thing ever。 Anyways。 Great book, as usual! Gaaah, Jordan! Why do you do me like this? Just when I thought I was going to give you two stars, you somehow make this incredibly long book worth it。 I mean, come on。 Not much was going on for the majority of this book (And the prologue was 8% of the book? Why not just do a handful of chapters with differing POVs?)。 Pacing was painful。 And really, I don't think the finale was enough to make up for it。Then I got to thinking about the little things Jordan did。 The man's an artist。 He is dedicated Gaaah, Jordan! The SUBTLETIES! Jordan is good。 The society that he has created is true to itself。And then circumstantial growth happened to all of the characters I cared about, with satisfactory development for my girls Nynaeve and Egwene。 Rand's internal battle/ conversation with Lews Therin is getting heated, and I think it adds a lot of value。So this is a harder book for me to rate。 Relationships were tolerable。 Growth was interesting。 Main conflict was appropriate as it felt like things with the (view spoiler)[Aes Sedai (hide spoiler)] needed to come to addressed (still some issues to be resolved there, of course)。 It had to be approached sooner or later, and I think Jordan did a good job with it。 As the book stands, I think the pacing could have been improved by editing the romance and the girl talk。 I think those points are some of Jordan's weaker skills, anyway (but arguments could be made as to why his skills in relationships are some of the strongest in fantasy; gender roles are so uniquely consistent that it makes for an interesting, case study)。 At the end of the day, I enjoyed it。 。。。more

Holy fucking meat grinder。 That ending was amazing。 First real book in a long while。 Glad to be back in this series and world。 That ending was balls to the wall。 For shadowing doom, distrust, paranoia, insanity, my lord what a book。 All the heroes, all the stories。 Second favorite one in the series。 Absolutely amazing。 8/10。

I don't have as many thoughts on LOC as I did on TSR or TFOH but let's see。Honestly I think this is an improvement over TFOH in almost every way。 It's still a book where not a lot happens over a very long stretch of words, but the things that do happen are much more interesting。 Much of the benefit comes from the return of the Aes Sedai to the forefront of the series, and the shift away from the heavy Aeil focus of the last two books (though the Aeil still take up a LOT of space in this novel, w I don't have as many thoughts on LOC as I did on TSR or TFOH but let's see。Honestly I think this is an improvement over TFOH in almost every way。 It's still a book where not a lot happens over a very long stretch of words, but the things that do happen are much more interesting。 Much of the benefit comes from the return of the Aes Sedai to the forefront of the series, and the shift away from the heavy Aeil focus of the last two books (though the Aeil still take up a LOT of space in this novel, we at least get some time with Andorans and Cairhrienans)。Rand fucks about for the majority of the novel, running between Andor and Cairhien at the drop of a hat, but his establishment of the Asha'man is cool and the his battle with Lews Therin is much more interesting than constant bickering with Aviendha。 Mat gets relatively little page time, again, but leading the Band is a far better place for him than bitching and moaning while hanging out the Aeil, so it's an improvement。 Perrin returns! For a brief moment at the beginning and then just in time for the climax at the end, but he is back。 Faile continues to be a drag on his storyline, and I really don't like how he's able to smell emotions to a level of ridiculous complexity ("she smelled of annoyance, the annoyance of someone who had ordered their eggs lightly peppered but had found them peppered to a medium degree")。 Perrin's ability to instantly deduce the emotional state of anyone he comes within 50 feet of really only exacerbates the typical Jordan gender wars drama (of which Faile is always the gravest offender, it seems) because it requires him to be actively retarded instead of merely oblivious in order to maintain the "gee IDK why women are acting this way" nonsense all WOT men are saddled with。 Egwene does basically nothing except catch a case of the Horny for Gawyn for the first half of the novel, but her story picks up immensely when she is FINALLY summoned to Salidar to be crowned Amyrlin。 I'm not sure how to react to this development - on the one hand it's nice to have one of the female characters in a position of power, able to do something other than moan and curtsy (with all the men being Lords and commanders and prophecized heroes, it's nice for the women to finally stop being Accepted)。 And I do like the political maneuvering bits Egwene pulls off, and how the tenuous political situation within Salidar leads to this genuinely shocking twist (I exclaimed audibly when it happened, something that I rarely do)。 But it's hard not to compare this moment to a similar beat in a series I unabashedly love - Jon's election to Lord Commander of the Night's Watch in ASOIAF。 The promotion there is obviously not built up as a surprise the way Egwene's elevation is, but it's far more satisfying because we get to see the plan as it happens。 Here, the power and prestige is just sort of dropped in Egwene's lap, robbing us of that build up and payoff for the sake of a(n admittedly good) twist。 At some point, the other Aes Sedai factions are going to need to put up a real fight against Egwene, but I'm content to wait for that。((Having mentioned ASOIAF - it's worth noting that the political machinations in WOT often feel simplistic and too easy, compared to the high stakes political battles of that series - but I suppose the politics aren't really the main draw of WOT))Nynaeve and Elayne's plotlines benefit massively from the one-two punch of not being constantly at each other's throats and being out of that fucking circus。 Salidar, among the Aes Sedai, is a much much much better place for them to be, where they can do interesting things with the Power。 But as cool as Nynaeve learning to heal Stilling is, it seems a little perfunctory - she just sort of does it。 I understand the character reasons behind deciding to give more weight to Nynaeve overcoming her block, but healing stilling seems like it could've been a good discovery to tie into that character moment - like maybe she MUST be calm in order to heal it, I don't know。 This feels like 2 plot points that would've gone well together and were mostly separated to extend the length of the series, but we'll re-evaluate once Nynaeve finally gets over that block。 When talking about Elayne it is almost impossible to avoid talking about the main hang up of LOC, a hangup which grows out of one of my big problems with TFOH: None of the main characters actually feel like they're friends, everybody takes the worst possible interpretations of everyone else's actions, and nobody ever just sits down and talks it out。I get that it's intentional。 I get that the characters are growing apart, that everyone is changing, that they're taking on new loyalties and priorities and those don't always align。 But the Emmonds Field crew grew up together! Mat, Rand and Perrin were best friends for 18 years - Rand and Egwene were set to be married, and neither was exactly unhappy with the prospect。 You would think that at some point, when faced with this world that keeps rapidly expanding and getting more and more complicated and dangerous, one of them would sit down and think, "gee, maybe I should extend the tiniest bit of trust and compassion to my next door neighbor" but they never do。 Rand is the worst in this respect, but Egwene and Mat are nearly his equal and neither of them have half as compelling a reason to be so distrusting - sometimes to the point of outright hostility - to lifelong friends。 So many of the problems here could be eased if the characters just sat down and chatted honestly with each other that I think Jordan really hamstrung himself by having 5/6 main characters know each other since childbirth。 If they were relative strangers this would make so much more sense。 It's especially baffling when everyone is like, "Oh, Min and Loial, my best friends whom I trust implicitly even though I spent like 3 months with them 2 years ago" when they're basically telling their lifelong friends to fuck off。 It's strange。 Why did I begin that paragraph with Elayne, only to segue off to the Emmonds Fields crew? Because Elayne is the pinnacle of this! For the majority of the book she's unaware of the situation in Andor, but upon learning that Morgase is dead and Rand is desperately waiting to give her throne, she not only doesn't IMMEDIATELY go to Caemlyn to claim her country but actively DERIDES Rand for having the gall to SECURE HER BIRTHRIGHT FROM ONE OF THE FORSAKEN。 "Oh, he'll give me Andor, will he? Give me?" YES, ELAYNE。 HE WILL GIVE IT TO YOU, AS HE HAS IT AND YOU DO NOT。 Egwene literally discovers traveling in the same scene, so it wouldn't even be hard for her to duck into Caemlyn, settle everyone down, and then fuck off to Ebou Dar for the fucking BOWL or what-the-fuck-ever that will presumably play an important role in the next book。 She is knowingly and intentionally letting a bad political situation fester, and given Morgase signing over rights to the White Cloaks, it seems obvious that this is designed to engineer a whole big clusterfuck that simply couldn't happen if Elayne took even a modicum of responsibility re: her position。 And this would be fine if I had any belief that Elayne would get called out for this gallivanting around while her country needs her, but I just don't。 I think Elayne will get huffy with anyone who tries to do so and that will be that。The last character to warrant independent discussion is Min。 I can't decide if, amongst the harem, she is the worst sufferer of the Horny (or its more specific cousin, Rand Thirst Syndrome) - she is still the best of the harem, even while suffering, but she is the only good character when not suffering (Aviendha only stops being insufferable in LOC because she becomes basically a non-entity, though I am interested in seeing if her relationship with Olver develops at all)。 So while her RTS baseline is the highest (making her the best) the difference between her non-RTS character and RTS-character might actually be the biggest (making her the worst)。 I will consider。 Her relationship with Rand isn't bad, though he does compete with Perrin for the stupidest possible person award。 Personally I am far more interested in the relationships between the harem's girls than I am any of their relationships with Rand。 Is this feminism? Well I said I didn't have much to say and yet here I am。 A quick note about the ending to wrap things up - I struggle to think of a novel which goes to such great lengths to cut its own tension out at the knees。 I've mentioned WOT's struggle with epic battle scenes before but this must be the most baffling。 Our set up: Perrin and a few thousand soldiers are hunting Rand。 They'll have to fight through Aes Sedai! Will it be enough? Our resolution: Well first the Shaido show up, which might theoretically tilt the odds against our heroes (more enemies) but because the Shaido and the Aes Sedai mostly just fight each other, really ends up making everything easier。 THEN the Asha'man show up。 THEN when there's some tension about the barrier being up (what if our troops outside get slaughtered?) they just open it up anyway and the Asha'man slaughter everyone in like, half a page。 It's mind-boggling how easily everything resolves。 While the end result is an interesting development for the series, the climax itself is a wet fart。 Easily outstripped by the ending to TFOH。 。。。more

Years of people complaining that it gets ‘slow’ in the middle (and people interjecting opinions when I started) put me off reading this series and now that I am, I don’t get it。 This is my favorite book of the series so far (next to the Dragon Reborn)! Some parts of this book dragged for me。 Some parts were fine。 Rand is now very interesting, not like what he was in the start of the series。 The final act was just awesome。 What else is there to say。 I literally got chills listening to the the last two chapters。 Over all my least favorite book of the wheel of time so far。

(7/10)- Ok so I have a lot of stuff to say (not really) and some of it is kinda negative but I’m happy that I finished this book and I enjoyed it so it deserves at least four stars just for that。 The stuff I do really like in this book are the writing (sometimes it was a bit clunky but oh well), the world building (obviously, it’s incredible), the characters (kinda but I have more to say later on that), and the ending, which had me on the edge of my seat。 Now the stuff I didn’t love so much。 The (7/10)- Ok so I have a lot of stuff to say (not really) and some of it is kinda negative but I’m happy that I finished this book and I enjoyed it so it deserves at least four stars just for that。 The stuff I do really like in this book are the writing (sometimes it was a bit clunky but oh well), the world building (obviously, it’s incredible), the characters (kinda but I have more to say later on that), and the ending, which had me on the edge of my seat。 Now the stuff I didn’t love so much。 The relationships were kinda crappy and that really bugged me, especially in the second half of the book。 A lot of the things that happen in the beginning/middle of the book aren’t very important (I mean, some stuff with Egwene and Nynaeve are but otherwise not much)。 The characters got on my nerves slightly, but overall looking back I enjoy them more than while reading。 Also, one last thing。 A lot of characters stand with their hands on their hips when they’re angry (which also bugs me, by the way) but then there’s one scene with Min that just caused my brain to break: “。。。she placed her hands on her hips [。。。] Her wrists were twisted so her fingers pointed up。。。” This shouldn’t be possible, but it is now, I guess。 Anyway, I still really loved this book, even if it has flaws。 。。。more

These books are long and at times have some slow points but man does the payoffs and peaks make up for the valleys。 Politics abound in this one as pieces are set in motion, and players begin to emerge。 We see much more of the Forsaken including POV, more mystery and theories come out of this one (I have so many!)。 I’m also happy to see the Forsaken not get plowed through in this one like in previous books, and this also is the book where I, along with Rand, no longer can stand Aes Sedai。 Perrin These books are long and at times have some slow points but man does the payoffs and peaks make up for the valleys。 Politics abound in this one as pieces are set in motion, and players begin to emerge。 We see much more of the Forsaken including POV, more mystery and theories come out of this one (I have so many!)。 I’m also happy to see the Forsaken not get plowed through in this one like in previous books, and this also is the book where I, along with Rand, no longer can stand Aes Sedai。 Perrin is back in this one, and he makes for memorable moments, Mat continues to rise up in my favorites and his chapters always give me a smile。 Rand juggling dealing with the Power, politics, and the voice in his head are all things that keep me on the edge of my seat reading。 Egwene is better for me in this book, I cannot stand Elayne。 At all。 Nynaeve is still in the lead for favorite woman character, despite her low spot at book 1。 The ending of this book too was great, the feeling of 800 pages of dominoes falling down in perfect sequence, with still more to come。 Looking forward to continuing my reading, even if the next books are dubbed “the slump”。 。。。more
