Finally finished reading this book! Was good but not the best of the series this far。 Slow at points and really bummed there was no Perrin。 Interesting developments with Rand and those around him。 Sad parts towards the end, but some nice twists too。 Curious what will happen with Nynaeve and the information she dropped to the one character in her last section, I'm guessing she will duplicate in the real world what she d done in Dreamland。 Finally finished reading this book! NOTE: In hindsight, this may be less of a review and more venting frustrations that have been building over 5 books! I gave this 3 stars。 At times I could give it 2。 As a series 4, 4 and a half so far。 For me it suffers from what most of the books in this series feels lacking in; editing。 So much content could be removed and the book would be better for it。 The detail of the characters thoughts and feelings are what makes this series particularly good, but there's too much repetition。 I want to NOTE: In hindsight, this may be less of a review and more venting frustrations that have been building over 5 books! I gave this 3 stars。 At times I could give it 2。 As a series 4, 4 and a half so far。 For me it suffers from what most of the books in this series feels lacking in; editing。 So much content could be removed and the book would be better for it。 The detail of the characters thoughts and feelings are what makes this series particularly good, but there's too much repetition。 I want to recommend this book, and the series, to people, but its hard when so much of it infuriates me。 And I think what frustrates me most are the depictions of women, and the gender stereotypes in general。 Taking into account when this was written and how much the conversation around gender and sex has progressed, still how its treated in this is just lazy。 This is only more frustrating when you have these awesome powerful female characters in a world where women rulers are the norm。 I could forgive the rigid gender binary thats written into the mechanics of the magic (though I would love to see a contemporary version of this world that takes a more nuanced view of gender) and this could easily be one of my favourite fantasy series。 But every time a female character sniffs indignantly and thinks "I just don't understand men", clutching the necklace nestled between their breasts as she stares, shocked, at the other ladies low cut dress, while the guy notices the necklace between her breasts, trying not to stare at the other ladies breasts under the low cut dress, and he hears the woman sniffing loudly and thinks "i just don't understand women" and we're reminded again how women are crazy and men are stupid and。。。。ugh。 The world seemed to start out as a subversion of gender stereotypes that felt exciting considering it was written in 80s/90s, but its so ingrained in this over simplification of sexes that threatens to reduce any complex character-building to cartoons。 I keep trying to justify this writing as "oh its from the characters perspective, he's a horny guy, or a self conscious girl", which would be fine, but again, the repetition! The pace of the story, which I particularly enjoyed in this book, is continually slowed by this copy/pasted inner dialogue of one sex being repeatedly confused and frustrated by the other。 There are other troubling takes, but this is the most consistent failing I find。 On a positive note, it was such a relief to see some characters actually talk to each other like they might like one another。 Its book 5 and I think it may be the first time two people hugged in friendship。 At least thats how it feels。 For so many long-held friendships and emotional experiences shared, it always seems like everyone hates each other。 I really did enjoy it though :) And I'm going to keep reading them。 But I would love to see the upcoming TV adaption take some sort of nuanced approach to gender。 *sniffs loudly* 。。。more

It gets more and more challenging to write reviews the further into the series I get, but I am still really enjoying myself with these books!I will say that though I enjoyed this book, my favourite character (view spoiler)[Perrin (hide spoiler)] didn't make an appearance so that brought it down slightly for me。 I do understand why his storyline didn't quite fit, and there was more than enough content in here that it wasn't lacking, but it doesn't stop me from wanting to see him。A different chara It gets more and more challenging to write reviews the further into the series I get, but I am still really enjoying myself with these books!I will say that though I enjoyed this book, my favourite character (view spoiler)[Perrin (hide spoiler)] didn't make an appearance so that brought it down slightly for me。 I do understand why his storyline didn't quite fit, and there was more than enough content in here that it wasn't lacking, but it doesn't stop me from wanting to see him。A different character, however, is definitely giving him a run for his money。 (view spoiler)[Mat (hide spoiler)] is REALLY continuing to grow on me。 I said in my review of the The Shadow Rising that I was super interested to know what was going on with the mystery surrounding him, and the more we learn about it the more I love following this storyline。 I think 'the reluctant hero' is one of my favourite tropes, and especially the way it's done here, where there is no hesitation to save people or do what needs to be done, followed by vehement denial that they could possibly be a hero。 I love it。(view spoiler)[Nynaeve (hide spoiler)] is a character I really have no idea how to feel about。 I don't think I've ever read a more contradictory person in my life。 She is such a hypocrite, it's almost unbelievable, but she remains interesting to follow nevertheless, and I like where her and (view spoiler)[Elayne's (hide spoiler)] storyline is taking them。 I just barely know what to make of her or what we'll get whenever we're inside her head!Obviously, one of the primary characters in this book was Rand, which is unsurprising and probably not a spoiler, so I won't hide it。 And if we're talking about his storyline, one of my favourite parts about it is (view spoiler)[Aviendha (hide spoiler)], who I absolutely love。 It's interesting to watch her struggle with her feelings, since she is a fiercely independent woman but also kind and loyal。 I think she has helped Rand grow a lot throughout the past couple books, and has also helped keep him grounded。 His character arc is very interesting because you see him struggle a lot with how far to go, and I'm so glad we get to be inside his head for that struggle, because I think we see based on other characters perspectives what it must look like from the outside。 Regardless, it is ironic how I feel like I'm coming to understand Rand more and more the further he goes down this path where he is less sure of himself。The ending of this book was definitely explosive and interesting, and I really don't want to believe that (view spoiler)[Moiraine (hide spoiler)] is gone, but based on (view spoiler)[Lan's (hide spoiler)] words and actions it really does seem to have happened。 I don't know how to feel, because that was a character I thought was sticking around for the long haul and hoped they would, but there needs to be stakes, and I hope Robert Jordan sticks to his decisions。 A resurrection would be worse。My thoughts are very jumbled at the moment, so I think this is the most coherent review I can put together, and I'm really looking forward to picking up Lord of Chaos whenever I have time! 。。。more

I actually "really liked it", but what kept me from giving it 4 stars was that it didn't need to be this long。 We were told the same things so many times that we could have lost about 100 pages without even trying。 Nyn thinks that tight/revealing clothes are scandalous。 Aes Sedai are ageless。 Egwene thinks Rand is wool-headed。 Dozens of others。 These just weigh down the story, which is good otherwise。 I actually "really liked it", but what kept me from giving it 4 stars was that it didn't need to be this long。 We were told the same things so many times that we could have lost about 100 pages without even trying。 Nyn thinks that tight/revealing clothes are scandalous。 Aes Sedai are ageless。 Egwene thinks Rand is wool-headed。 Dozens of others。 These just weigh down the story, which is good otherwise。 。。。more

I have to admit that I have mixed feelings about this installment。 There were things that I liked, but there were quite some things that left me perplexed, lost, begging for more clarity and direction。 For the most part of the recent books I was asking myself a question: where is Min? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I continue to be impressed with the way Jordan takes magical concepts that he has established in previous book and develops them further。 We continue to learn new things about channeling, bealfire, aidams, and Tel'a'ranrhiod -- things that seem a natural extension of what we learned before。The end of Moiraine and Lanfear surprised me only because we are not yet halfway through this series and I had expected those characters to continue to play big roles as we move forward。 But the scene was perf I continue to be impressed with the way Jordan takes magical concepts that he has established in previous book and develops them further。 We continue to learn new things about channeling, bealfire, aidams, and Tel'a'ranrhiod -- things that seem a natural extension of what we learned before。The end of Moiraine and Lanfear surprised me only because we are not yet halfway through this series and I had expected those characters to continue to play big roles as we move forward。 But the scene was perfectly set up and executed。 Beautiful and touching。 I'm also so glad that Rand FINALLY accepted Moiraine's help and support in this book before the end! Been waiting on that since book 1!I appreciated the way that both Rand and Nyneave are presented as the main characters whose storylines we consistently follow -- and then both characters have an important role in the climax。 A lot of great character growth for both of them!I'm glad Jordan let Perrin have a break after all he went through in the last book! I hope when we come back to him he's been living happily in Emon's Field with Faile and not gone through anything unpleasant。 I have to mention that Mat's reluctant heroism at the battle for Cairhien made for some of my favorite scenes。BUT-- Jordan continues to ramp up all that unnecessary stuff he had in the last book。 For at least the first half of the book, I doubt there was a chapter without some mention of a transparent dress, swooping neckline, or insinuating reference, at the very least。 Leanne's drastic change of character made me gag, and it got to the point where I didn't even want to read the chapters about Elayne and Nynaeve's adventures at the menagerie。 Side note, I still don't know how I feel about the menagerie。 Horses are called horses, but elephants are s'redit? And all these ladies beating each other up like little kids during that section felt unnatural, not to mention annoying。 Min does nothing in this book except watch Siuan do things。 Oh, and decide to wear rogue。 Come on, Min! 。。。more

Finished the first 5 books non stop。 Great plot and writing。 Though initially there were too many similarities with LOTR and I almost lost interest。 But glad I didn’t。 The only criticism is that the female characters, so far, are uniformly terrible personalities。 Arrogant, impulsive, stubborn, judgmental, temperamental, manipulating and intolerant。 Could have interspersed some with a positive personality。 Else, brilliant so far!

Joel Håland

Slow first two thirds and then a lot of action towards the end。 I probably only made it through to the good parts because I read it as an audiobook。 Still all in all an enjoyable book with some really cool parts that shift my rating for the better。 Hoping the series picks up for the coming books。

I don’t really know how to rate this book, so I think I'll give it 3。5 for now。 I like the issues that the overarching story tries to illustrate (what happens between The Chosen One proclaiming themselves and actually getting to The Last Battle?), the worldbuilding continues to impress me, and there were some interesting character developments。 But… it’s a very long book。 I wasn’t expecting that all of it would be interesting and cool and exciting, but I’d hoped that more of it would be。 Or no – I don’t really know how to rate this book, so I think I'll give it 3。5 for now。 I like the issues that the overarching story tries to illustrate (what happens between The Chosen One proclaiming themselves and actually getting to The Last Battle?), the worldbuilding continues to impress me, and there were some interesting character developments。 But… it’s a very long book。 I wasn’t expecting that all of it would be interesting and cool and exciting, but I’d hoped that more of it would be。 Or no – most of the events were interesting and cool, but the pacing was a bit uneven and some character interactions were too repetitive。 I’m still interested enough to continue on to the next part, but I’m starting to understand why some might not be。 。。。more

I found this easier and more enjoyable to go through than the fourth book。 This was mostly to do with the reduced number of perspectives which made it more simple to follow。 I felt that it was incredibly slow until the last 100 pages or so, but I'm still very enthusiastic to continue the series。 I found this easier and more enjoyable to go through than the fourth book。 This was mostly to do with the reduced number of perspectives which made it more simple to follow。 I felt that it was incredibly slow until the last 100 pages or so, but I'm still very enthusiastic to continue the series。 。。。more

The pattern isn't always entirely predicable。。。 I'm going to apologise in advance for this review。 Out of all of the Wheel of Time fantasy books I've read so far, this one has had the heaviest impact on me so far。 I'm still buzzing like during the aftermath of a concert where my emotions are still high but my body is mentally battered and abruptly crashing。 Simply put, this book will test you and put you through the ringer。The Fires of Heaven picks up right where we left off with the fourth boo The pattern isn't always entirely predicable。。。 I'm going to apologise in advance for this review。 Out of all of the Wheel of Time fantasy books I've read so far, this one has had the heaviest impact on me so far。 I'm still buzzing like during the aftermath of a concert where my emotions are still high but my body is mentally battered and abruptly crashing。 Simply put, this book will test you and put you through the ringer。The Fires of Heaven picks up right where we left off with the fourth book in the series, The Shadow Rises。 Rand has finally embraced his destiny as the chosen one and he no longer tries to hide as the simple shepherd from Two Rivers (we still want proof that he ever was a shepherd)。 And now he has to unite a fractured tribe to lead them towards the final battle with the Dark One。It might sound like a standard classic fantasy at it's best。 But with some modern twists, it grows from a good fantasy series to an exceptional one。Since the Dragon Reborn, Robert Jordan has mixed things up a little, and in truth, I'm still adjusting to the new narrative style put in place。 His classic RJ prose is still there, expect heavy descriptions, repetitions and and alot of。。。 *Ahem* references to women folding their arms under a certain body area。 But it grows on you。 And while this new story structure is quite "abrupt" and somewhat fractured。 I get it! He has a lot ideas he wants to get included onto the page。 His foreshadowing is brilliant and when R。J hits his stride with critical moments it's both emotionally engaging and creatively spectacular。You can tell R。J has a plan set in place。 The plots appear to be continuously growing in sense of severity and you can tell that this series is becoming increasingly more unapologetically ambitious。 It's exciting to venture deeper into the abyss with no clue as to what treasure lies within。One of the main characters, Perrin is AWOL for the complete book。 While his character had a huge role in the previous entry, I did feel like his presence was missed。 We were down to two big storylines as opposed to three and it felt a little unbalanced。 But hey, Perrin's on honeymoon vacation which leaves the rest of the characters to carry the story。 Let's see how they fared。。。 Rand: The main man, the chosen one, the Dragon Reborn, dominates the majority of the page time。 I've still yet to warm to Rand's character arc。 It's gaining more substance with each book, but to me the most interesting part of his storyline was exploring the relationships he has as well as the ones he's developing。 To see him react with a diverse cast of characters, Mat, Egwene, Moiraine, Lan, Aviendha, the Aeil, Aes Sedai, The Foresaken and darkfriends。 There's some great dynamics beginning to emerge。 Mat: I'm beginning to see why he's a fan favourite。 His storyline started off slow in the series but he's slowly moving more and more to the forefront with some fantastic character moments。 His character arc has become far juicier。 His future arc is by far the most intriguing currently。 Nynaeve (and Elayne): The two adopt a duology within this book。 They have great chemistry bouncing off of one another。 This definitely felt like the B storyline, but I actually loved this one far more。 It seemed to have a smoother pace。 Egwene: she kinda takes a backseat in this entry。 I feel like there's something big coming for her arc but we're not quite at that point yet, so she's in a somewhat limbo until her story picks up。 I find the Aes Sedai the most compelling faction in the story。 I constantly want to learn more about them。 Egwene will definitely be prominent in this going forward。 We're now being indulged with so many pov's and honestly, it's awesome to see the world through Siuan Sanche's pov or from an Aiel's or Foresaken's。 The world has so much depth and R。J is demonstrating an incredible talent for crafting such a diverse, historic and cultural universe。 The villains are also gaining more substance, while the big bad is still very much the epitome of evil, we're getting so many Foresaken members with different motives and agendas。 Gone is the simple, evil baddie and instead, we're seeing dangerous and crafty antagonists manipulating scenes in unique and compelling ways。I must sound like a record on repeat by now。 But the characters are the reason why I keep on reading。 They're moving across the chess board, mixing and interacting with one another more。 The relationships and dynamics are either hit or miss。 But when they hit。 They hit hard。 You'll find yourself cheering for these characters, even if you're following an antagonist。 This is R。J's bread and butter。 Wholesome characters that you will grow attached to。I feel like some of the content is used as filler。 For example one character grows an unexpected crush on another and I found it a hindrance and annoyance to the development they recieved previously。 That said there were some moments which were heartfelt and poignant, which while, for now seem inconsequential, definitely will pay off down the line。To me Rand's storyline with the Aiel really dragged and slowed down the pacing。 The first two acts are a slow burn。 But the final act just skyrockets in pace。 Some huge revelations occur and you will be surprised and shocked。 The build up was worth it and I can't wait to see where we go next。The Fires of Heaven, like the Shadow Rising is certainly going to divide readers。 If you're here for solid character work, chemistry and what seems like an amazing amount of planned out plotting, then this will really be the book which gets you hooked on the series。 R。J clearly is a passionate writer, and it's easy to get carried away in the rich and imaginative world he's created。 We're slowly moving away more and more from the common fantasy tropes and instead we're getting some serious depth and substance。 This is book which contains the highest of highs but also the lowest of lows。 There's something poetic about that and it feels like R。J is still working on finding that perfect balance and harmony。 The irony is that the whirlwind of emotions experienced with this entry counteract any negative thoughts and you'll find yourself remembering the positives in this story far more than the negatives。 It's a pleasure to see this book series evolving into a story with so much uniquity and allure。 It's a farcry from the Lord of the Rings love letter homage, that was The Eye of the World。 It's a defining moment for the Wheel of Time books where it is now an entity entirely it's own。 The Final Verdict: 8 out of 10 。。。more
