Summary

It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages。 England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east。 Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king。 Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns。

In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined。 A young boatbuilder's life is turned upside down when the only home he's ever known is raided by Vikings, forcing him and his family to move and start their lives anew in a small hamlet where he does not fit in。 。 。 。 A Norman noblewoman marries for love, following her husband across the sea to a new land, but the customs of her husband's homeland are shockingly different, and as she begins to realize that everyone around her is engaged in a constant, brutal battle for power, it becomes clear that a single misstep could be catastrophic。 。 。 。 A monk dreams of transforming his humble abbey into a center of learning that will be admired throughout Europe。 And each in turn comes into dangerous conflict with a clever and ruthless bishop who will do anything to increase his wealth and power。

I loved the rest of the series。 This one felt a bit one note in comparison。 The good guys are good from the start and are always being thwarted by the same bad guys。

Follett never disappoints me。 Every page of this book was an education about life in the late tenth and early eleventh century。 I couldn't put this book down。 I will never understand the intrinsic cruelty of so much of the population of that era。 I have to imagine it was due to the short life expectancy from so may things which are simple cures in modern times。 As I get to the end of each of his books, I discover the connection to his future characters。 I love how despite all of the protagonist' Follett never disappoints me。 Every page of this book was an education about life in the late tenth and early eleventh century。 I couldn't put this book down。 I will never understand the intrinsic cruelty of so much of the population of that era。 I have to imagine it was due to the short life expectancy from so may things which are simple cures in modern times。 As I get to the end of each of his books, I discover the connection to his future characters。 I love how despite all of the protagonist's misery, that he always manages a happy ending。 If you love historic novels, he is always a must-read。 。。。more

This is my first book by Ken Follett and it won't be the last。 The story was gripping and I was always thinking about it。 I gave me a bit of insight to what it might have been like to live in the Dark Ages in England。 The heros and villians were all engrossing。 Can't wait until I start the next book!

Another massive tome from Ken Follet。 Easy reading compulsive story once you get in to it。 Really is a love story with a lot of gore included!

There is a lot to this。 It was really interesting seeing the very beginning of the town of Kingsbridge。 As with the rest of the series, the characters are interesting and heartbreaking, and the power-struggle is interesting and infuriating。 (view spoiler)[Wynstand and Wigelm are terrible terrible humans who of course are in power。 Ragna is a really interesting leader as she has a lot working against her。 Being a woman for one thing, the aforementioned terrible humans for another。 Edgar was a gre There is a lot to this。 It was really interesting seeing the very beginning of the town of Kingsbridge。 As with the rest of the series, the characters are interesting and heartbreaking, and the power-struggle is interesting and infuriating。 (view spoiler)[Wynstand and Wigelm are terrible terrible humans who of course are in power。 Ragna is a really interesting leader as she has a lot working against her。 Being a woman for one thing, the aforementioned terrible humans for another。 Edgar was a great character。 I sort of love the occasional infallible protagonist。 I am glad the terrible humans got their comeuppance at the end。 Absolutely sickened me when they took Ragna's 2-year-old away from her。 And when Dreng murdered Blod's baby。 I can't stand people harming children or forcing them away from their parents。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

The publishing of his most famous book ‘The Pillars of the Earth’ in 1989, a historical drama, was the advent of a series on Kingsbridge。 The two subsequent novels were ‘World Without End’ published in 2007 and ‘A Column of Fire’ published in 2017。 The latest installment in this series is a prequel to ‘The Pillars of Earth’ a story that transports the reader into 997 CE, during the end of the dark ages and dawn of the Middle Ages。 The story revolves around three protagonists and the creation of The publishing of his most famous book ‘The Pillars of the Earth’ in 1989, a historical drama, was the advent of a series on Kingsbridge。 The two subsequent novels were ‘World Without End’ published in 2007 and ‘A Column of Fire’ published in 2017。 The latest installment in this series is a prequel to ‘The Pillars of Earth’ a story that transports the reader into 997 CE, during the end of the dark ages and dawn of the Middle Ages。 The story revolves around three protagonists and the creation of Kingsbridge town, between the period 997 to 1007 CE。 England was being attacked by Welsh from the west and by Vikings from the east。 It is not a single overarching plot but an assimilation of small events with ups and downs but finally resulting in the building of a new prosperous town with good beliefs, culture, customs, and law。Follet’s mastery of consummate historical narrative style follows in “The Evening and the Morning” there is love, deceit, rape, murder, arson, a battle which makes this 1000-page novel gripping and a quick page turner。 。。。more

Couldn’t put it downWonderful writing。 Cliff hangers at every turn。 Amazingly well researched, giving insight into the beliefs and customs of the period。 Would recommend to anyone who enjoys intrigue and adventure and doesn’t mind a bit of spice。

Rounding down to 4。5 stars because of all the terrible things that happened to my favorite characters。 I began to think, “Good God, what other calamity could occur”, and then I found out。 It took until the last 50 pages or so for justice to be served。 Some reviewers claim Mr。 Follett just writes the same story over and over again, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the books in this series。

Prequel to the Kingsbridge series。 Perceived this as a tighter written book but wonder if it is that because I have already read the other books and know what's coming? The story is set in England over the ten years between AD 997 and 1007。 The central character is a ship builder, Edgar, whose village is burned down by the Vikings。 He loses everything, including his father and the girl he was going to run away with。 Through brains and hard work, he builds his life back, though not without constant obstacles thrown up by a greedy and malicious trio of brothers。 The bad guys get what's coming to them and the good folks get justice and due rewards, which is my fav The story is set in England over the ten years between AD 997 and 1007。 The central character is a ship builder, Edgar, whose village is burned down by the Vikings。 He loses everything, including his father and the girl he was going to run away with。 Through brains and hard work, he builds his life back, though not without constant obstacles thrown up by a greedy and malicious trio of brothers。 The bad guys get what's coming to them and the good folks get justice and due rewards, which is my favorite kind of ending。 Engaging reading (all 915 pages of it。 You get your money's worth with Follett's novels)。 。。。more

Always enjoyable reading this series。 The Dark Ages was a grim time, but Ken Follett weaves a good story and it’s always nice when the “badguys” get their comeuppance! It was fun to see the connections with his later period stories。

The brisk, abrupt, and modern way of writing was initially hard to get use to and would pull me out of the time period and story。 Nevertheless, I got use to it and it was effective for getting the story across。 I really enjoyed the story and also the tidbits of historical day to day life (how rent was paid, how money was made)。

Formulaic, predictable, stereotypical… Yet I read the entire thing and overall enjoyed it。

In a carefully paced story, the prequel to The Pillars of the Earth delivers。 Follet expertly develops characters that firmly hold the reader's attention。 He frustrated me right up until the end and then hit home when he brought the story to a close。 In a carefully paced story, the prequel to The Pillars of the Earth delivers。 Follet expertly develops characters that firmly hold the reader's attention。 He frustrated me right up until the end and then hit home when he brought the story to a close。 。。。more
