Summary

The memoir of one man’s coming-of-age, set during the twilight of apartheid and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed。

Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth。 Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison。 Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away。 Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle。

Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist。 It is also the story of that young man’s relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother—his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life。

I feel like I can't give this book a valid rating for multiple reasons。 First of all, I read this for a book club over the course of about 48 hours。 This isn't a book I probably would have read otherwise and I read it really fast。 Second, I think that this book covers a lot of interesting topics but to be honest I wish it dug deeper into a lot of them。 Trevor Noah's unique perspective on apartheid was so cool to read though! ONE WORD, A MUST-READ

4 stars - "really liked it"I've always admired Trevor Noah since the day he stepped on the stage of The Daily Show。 He's absolutely hilarious and never fails to make me laugh。 I nearly died when watching the opening of his Netflix stand-up "Son of Patricia"。So I already knew what to expect of Trevor Noah, I knew bits and pieces of his life, knew how hilarious he is。 And it's reflected well in this memoir。 It's super easy to follow along, even if it isn't in chronological order。 Trevor Noah jumps 4 stars - "really liked it"I've always admired Trevor Noah since the day he stepped on the stage of The Daily Show。 He's absolutely hilarious and never fails to make me laugh。 I nearly died when watching the opening of his Netflix stand-up "Son of Patricia"。So I already knew what to expect of Trevor Noah, I knew bits and pieces of his life, knew how hilarious he is。 And it's reflected well in this memoir。 It's super easy to follow along, even if it isn't in chronological order。 Trevor Noah jumps forward and backwards, but I was never lost or confused。 It feels like I'm reading a written stand-up show。 Really enjoyable。His life is also just super fascinating, it's interesting to get a glimpse of how other countries and other cultures live。 He tells it in a way that downplays how epic or wtf-able or heart-wrenching his life is, just like a comedian would。 But when you really think about it, holy shit he lived through that。Worth the read。 。。。more

This book is fantastic… I laughed, i cried, I struggled to stop reading… Trevor Noah depicts his day to day life growing up in an apartheid and shares the lessons he was taught and learned along the way。 He has an amazing ability to use wit and humor as he highlights the challenges of facing racial discrimination, poverty, and numerous other personal struggles as a kid。 I have a newfound respect for him and highly recommend this book!

Definitely listen to the audio book。 To hear Trevor do the voices of his grandmother and other characters is priceless。 This story is tragic and horrifying yet amazing how he is able to find the humor in it all。

Found this to be an easy read。 Trevor writes like a standup comedian and that was different yet interesting to read。

Madeline Justus

Listened to it on audible。 So good to have the author voice the book。 Really fun and interesting。 Would recommend。

What a great read。 I have heard about this book for so long and finally got to it because of book club。 I loved that each chapter started with history/info about South Africa。 It set the stage for what was happening in the country at a time of huge changes, good and bad。 He was of course hilarious but also insightful。 Good one to pick up for a very large audience。

I wish I'd read this before teaching Apartheid for the first time as it provided good insight into the policy and its long-term impacts through personal experience。 I really enjoyed learning about South African culture, including Noah's mother's relationship with Christian and traditional African belief systems, the importance of sharing language and the lack of belonging for 'coloured' people。 I thought the snapshots of Noah's life were structured well to maintain intrigue and built up to a ver I wish I'd read this before teaching Apartheid for the first time as it provided good insight into the policy and its long-term impacts through personal experience。 I really enjoyed learning about South African culture, including Noah's mother's relationship with Christian and traditional African belief systems, the importance of sharing language and the lack of belonging for 'coloured' people。 I thought the snapshots of Noah's life were structured well to maintain intrigue and built up to a very climactic ending。 。。。more

Living in South Africa, it was interesting to read his childhood story and upbringing。 He is very charming and a good storyteller, but I found some inconsistencies in the book as I am trying to put the story chronologically together and base it on facts after apartheid ended。

Trevor Noah is so freaking interesting and this book does his story and voice 100% justice。 There are moments of comedic gold as expected, but it’s also bursting with warmth and compassion and reflection as Noah recounts his family and childhood growing up in a South Africa still grappling with apartheid。

Surucha

I heard this as an audiobook where Trevor himself narrates the story which made the experience of reading this book much more authentic。
