Summary

A Richard and Judy recommendation for the 2012 Summer Book Club, this is a brilliant Gothic novel in the vein of Daphne du Maurier

A chance encounter: When Sarah meets dark, brooding Alex, she grasps his offer of a new life miles away from her own。 They've both recently escaped broken relationships, and need to start again。 Why not do it together?

A perfect life: But when Sarah gets to the tiny village of Burrington Stoke, something doesn't add up。 Alex's beautiful wife Genevieve was charming, talented, and adored by all who knew her。 And apparently, she and Alex had a successful marriage complete with a gorgeous son, Jamie。 Why would Genevieve walk out on her perfect life? And why has no one heard from her since she did so?

A web of lies: Genevieve's family and all her friends think that Alex knows more about her disappearance than he's letting on。 But Sarah's fallen in love with him and just knows he couldn't have anything to hide。 Or could he?

I was completely mesmerized by this book。 It was a lengthy read but so worth it。 Was a page turner that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time。 Wasn’t expecting it to be a mysterious and dark thriller。

Woman meets man when in Italy after having stillborn。 He asks her to go back to rural England with him as Nanny, and eventually lover。 His wife, very beloved, famous horse woman, and wealthy, has disappeared。 Lots of conflict and mystery to unravel。

Or do Sarah's mounting suspicions and uneasy dreams indicate a more sinister reason for her predecessor's disappearance, as Genevieve's mother believes?Psychological suspense, romance, and complex family relationships make this story an exciting and absorbing read。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Firstly, I found the plot preposterous- woman meets a man, they have literally two short conversations and a quick sexual encounter, then she agrees to move in with him - hundreds of miles from her home - and look after his child!! Who would do that?! Especially when the guy isn’t particularly nice to her or forthcoming with conversation。 At no point does he seem romantically interested in her at all (only in the bedroom) and the child is horrible to her, yet she becomes besotted with them both! It also annoyed me that neither Sarah nor Alex really had a proper conversation。 Even by the end of the book, she still doesn’t tell him about her stillbirth。 The way the author adds hints of paranormal activity is terrible - ‘。。。I looked up and saw the dead woman staring at me! Oh, no , actually it was my reflection’。 Ridiculous。 I was intrigued enough to keep reading as I wanted to find out what happened, but it wasn’t until 3/4 of the way through that I started to enjoy it more。 I didn’t figure out the ending。 I also found it extremely implausible that after she returns to Manchester after her breakdown, her sister, who has up until this point been 100% against Alex, and Sarah’s choices to be with him, suddenly gets excited about Sarah’s sleuthing and encourages her to prove his innocence! I started this review giving the book 3 stars because I enjoyed the last quarter, but in writing this review I have reminded myself of the myriad of things wrong with the book。 Back down to 2。 。。。more

This is a dark, twenty first century, romantic mystery。 There is a lot of history in this mix of Charlotte Bronte and Daphne du Maurier 。 The author's writing mechanics were good, except for the many, many throw away passages。 The throw always bothered me at first, but they had a use。The main character, Sarah, falls in love with a man whose wife has gone missing。 Where is this wife named Genevieve? Everything points to Alex, her husband, as being complicit in her disappearance。 Sarah follows the This is a dark, twenty first century, romantic mystery。 There is a lot of history in this mix of Charlotte Bronte and Daphne du Maurier 。 The author's writing mechanics were good, except for the many, many throw away passages。 The throw always bothered me at first, but they had a use。The main character, Sarah, falls in love with a man whose wife has gone missing。 Where is this wife named Genevieve? Devastated by the loss of her child due to stillbirth and the subsequent and the subsequent unfaithfulness of her partner, Laurie, Sarah is an emotional wreck。 On a trip to Sicily with her sister May and brother-in-law Neil, Sarah meets Alexander in the hotel in which they are staying。 She is drawn to Alex and his nearly-seven-year-old son Jamie, whose mother Genevieve has left their home。After an impulsive act of sex, Alex invites Sarah to come and stay with him in his home in Burrington Stoke, Devastated by the loss of her child due to stillbirth and the subsequent and the subsequent unfaithfulness of her partner, Laurie, Sarah is an emotional wreck。 On a trip to Sicily with her sister May and brother-in-law Neil, Sarah meets Alexander in the hotel in which they are staying。 She is drawn to Alex and his nearly-seven-year-old son Jamie, whose mother Genevieve has left their home。After an impulsive act of sex, Alex invites Sarah to come and stay with him in his home in Burrington Stoke, look after his son as a “paid nanny and housekeeper” and explore their relationship。 Sarah agrees, even though her family warns her not to go。 She feels that both she and Alex have experienced heartbreak and that they might be good for each other。 Also, having lost her child, her mothering instinct is aroused at the sight of Jamie, and she insists on going。But Sarah’s dream of setting up home with Alex and his son seems doomed。 Jamie is deeply suspicious of Sarah。 Genevieve’s wealthy family, especially her mother Virginia Churchill, is standoffish, while her step sister, Claudia, is friendly towards her。 But Sarah knows that the animosities persist。 The villagers are resentful of Sarah, seeing her presence as evidence of Alex’s crime, and of his shamelessness in bringing home his mistress。Sarah is torn between the suspicion that Alex may be responsible for Genevieve’s disappearance and her love for him。 Could he really have done away with her? Could a man like him, so charming and loving and kind, be capable of killing to get his way? Could he kill again? The book is a re-telling of Daphne du Maurier’s classic, Rebecca。 Genevieve is perfect, like Rebecca。 Everyone in the village liked her and everyone, especially her own rich family, the Churchills who own the quarry and a great deal of property in nearly half the village, is suspicious of Alex, believing that he has something to do with Genevieve’s disappearance。 That he is hiding something。 Alex himself thinks that she has gone away to be with some lover that he doesn’t know of。Like Manderley, the village of Burrington Stoke is picturesque, despite the quarry in the neighbourhood。 There is also the hint of a ghost that plagues Sarah。 The descriptions of the ghost are good, scaring Sarah and us, while we are at it。 Sarah believes that the ghost she is seeing is that of Genevieve。I feel conflicted about Sarah。 Like her family, I disagreed with her decision and thought Alex to be too good to be true。 Another thing that seemed odd was how she was so fond of Jamie, particularly when the kid didn’t bond with her at all。Of the minor characters, I loved both May and Neil。 Neil, in particular, was totally supportive of Sarah。 Both of them were willing to do whatever it takes to keep her safe。Even Claudia, Genevieve’s half-sister, and Betsy, the woman from the village who is the only one who holds a completely unselfish friendship with Sarah, stand out of the crowd。 They were very real。Another thing I enjoyed were the detailed descriptions, with just enough detail to paint a word picture。 The house, Avalon, was big and rambling and creaky, adding to the atmosphere。I lost interest in the book for a brief while。 I only plodded on because I have a thing about not giving up on books。 At 544 pages, this one was way too long。 A good 200 pages could have been cut down, if Alex had quit brooding and come clean with Sarah。 。。。more

Great easy read with a good rise of tension throughout the book。 Hard to put down once you start reading and you easily get attached to the characters。

A slow burnerI felt a lot of it was filled in with descriptions of the countryside。 It seemed unbelievable towards the end。 With their daughter dead you would think the grandparents would have taken their grandson as the Dad wasn’t his real Dad。 There could have been more messages from the ghost of the woman to liven it up。 I was beginning to think it was Sarah that was the murderer to have the husband and son for herself!
