Summary

I feel like an expert on sleep after reading this! It’s a little like reading a text book at times but super informative and while I knew how important 7-9 hours of sleep was, this book was really impactful。 Interesting fact that I learned - if you sleep less then 6 hours the week before your flu vaccine, it’s 50% less effective then if you got adequate sleep

Sleep makes you attractive, boosts your immune system and your metabolism, makes you smarter by helping in memory retention and boosting your creativity。 Walker explains how we can harness sleep to improve learning, mood, and energy levels; regulate hormones; prevent cancer, Alzheimer's, and diabetes; slow the effects of aging; increase longevity; enhance the education and lifespan of our children, and boost the efficiency, success, and productivity of our businesses。 This book explains how sleep consists of two main stages: REM & NREM sleep and how both of these stages are essential for your body。 How alcohol, caffeine & marijuana messes up your sleep。 Read this book and I guarantee you that you will start valuing your sleep more。 Long story short : if you want to live a long and a healthy life, pay more attention to your sleep。💤✨💫 。。。more

I listen to audiobook when I was commuting to and from work。 So there are parts of the book that just passed through without me really tuning in to it。 But the gist is; if we want to avoid cancer, diabetes, heart attack, Alzheimer we should never, ever, ever skip our sleep。

Extremely interesting book to read! Matthew Walker constantly uses analogy to describe scientific jargons to make it more understandable to the common audience。 Makes me understand the importance of sleep。 I will strive to make the effort to sleep in the manner that our human body is programmed to。

Thank you so much for a great book。 This gives me a whole new perspective on sleep。 And it also gives a motivation to get a qualified sleep every day, at least in my cognitive。 A new challenge for me that I want to share this scientific knowledge with my family, especially with my grandparents。

Audible: A PoemLike food blended and fedthrough a straw, literature slurped down (?)into (?)my ears。 While the audiobook format for this one felt unideal, and while I felt the book leaned a bit too textbookish, I cannot deny the dire need this work addresses in helping to fix the tragedy of modern sleep (or the lack thereof)。 Recommended for everyone because, as the author points out, this is a crisis largely caused by lack of education。 Some key audio transcriptions:- The benefits of sleep for Audible: A PoemLike food blended and fedthrough a straw, literature slurped down (?)into (?)my ears。 While the audiobook format for this one felt unideal, and while I felt the book leaned a bit too textbookish, I cannot deny the dire need this work addresses in helping to fix the tragedy of modern sleep (or the lack thereof)。 Recommended for everyone because, as the author points out, this is a crisis largely caused by lack of education。 Some key audio transcriptions:- The benefits of sleep for the brain: makes you live longer, enhances memory and makes you more creative, makes you look more attractive, keeps you slim and lowers food cravings, it protects you from cancer and dementia, it wards off colds and the flue, it lowers risk of heart attacks and stroke, not to mention diabetes, and you'll even feel happier, less depressed, and less anxious。 - More than 65% of the US adult population fail to obtain the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep each night during the week。。。Deep currents of sleep neglect circulate in all developed nations, and it for these reasons that the World Health Organization (WHO) now labels the lack of societal sleep as a global health epidemic。-[T]he shorter your sleep, the shorter your life。 The leading causes of disease and death in developed nations。。。such as heart disease, obesity, dementia, diabetes, and cancer, all have recognized causal links to a lack of sleep。- Sleep is not like a credit system or the bank。 The brain can never recover all the sleep it has been deprived of。 We cannot accumulate a debt without penalty, nor can we repay that sleep debt at a later time。 PS: It was really cute when the author added a note in the intro encouraging readers to sleep in relation to his book, turning a seeming insult into the highest compliment。 。。。more

You'll never skip sleep or treat it with less importance after reading this book。 There is hardly any aspect of human life that sleep has left untouched—health, productivity at work, creativity, emotional intelligence, and whatnot。 The author is not just a sleep scientists also a sleep evangelist, he has emphasized page after on why it's important to get a good night sleep。 Great read。 Must read for those who think sleep isn't that important。 You'll never skip sleep or treat it with less importance after reading this book。 There is hardly any aspect of human life that sleep has left untouched—health, productivity at work, creativity, emotional intelligence, and whatnot。 The author is not just a sleep scientists also a sleep evangelist, he has emphasized page after on why it's important to get a good night sleep。 Great read。 Must read for those who think sleep isn't that important。 。。。more

Liked reading a book but the author turned out to be a bit of a fraud。 Would like to read something similar to this that is more correct, though。 Sucked that the author exaggerated in a lot of cases and used cyclical citations on certain parts。 This review does a good job of highlighting all the parts where the author is quite questionable。 Liked reading a book but the author turned out to be a bit of a fraud。 Would like to read something similar to this that is more correct, though。 Sucked that the author exaggerated in a lot of cases and used cyclical citations on certain parts。 This review does a good job of highlighting all the parts where the author is quite questionable。 。。。more

If it weren’t for Walker’s few attempts at humor and his personal antidotes about sleep this book would be found among your college textbooks。 Anyone seeking a book that addresses the emotional meaning of dreams and psychology of sleep should look elsewhere。 But, if your goal is to learn more about the biology and chemistry of sleep and you can stay awake and focus through the rat research details he offers, you might find yourself making a plan for better sleep and encouraging others to do so t If it weren’t for Walker’s few attempts at humor and his personal antidotes about sleep this book would be found among your college textbooks。 Anyone seeking a book that addresses the emotional meaning of dreams and psychology of sleep should look elsewhere。 But, if your goal is to learn more about the biology and chemistry of sleep and you can stay awake and focus through the rat research details he offers, you might find yourself making a plan for better sleep and encouraging others to do so too。 。。。more

Great book but I'm not giving it 5 stars as it wasn't as comprehensive as I thought 700+ pages would be Too generic and repetitive。 not the sleep encyclopaedia I was hoping to read, recommended just to those who think that sleeping 5 hours a night is totally okI'm surprised indeed about the score of this book which drew me into it, but definitely not recommended"Drugs" or any aid for sleeping are simply swept under the rug by just mentioning benzos often being prescribed for insomnia。 This is no Great book but I'm not giving it 5 stars as it wasn't as comprehensive as I thought 700+ pages would be Too generic and repetitive。 not the sleep encyclopaedia I was hoping to read, recommended just to those who think that sleeping 5 hours a night is totally okI'm surprised indeed about the score of this book which drew me into it, but definitely not recommended"Drugs" or any aid for sleeping are simply swept under the rug by just mentioning benzos often being prescribed for insomnia。 This is nonsense。 There is a vast list of substances the book could have gone over。 From the effect of chamomile, melatonin in pills (melatonin is mentioned but never as an active supplement), glycine, theanine or cannabis。 These are just some of the most powerful drugs and supplements that are often used and was hoping to hear something about them given this is a book written specifically on the topic Absolute pity that no mention was made of the fact that alcohol improves the activity of the glymphatic system an essential detail given it works when we sleepThere was just some very generic fear mongering about drinking any alcohol at all。 But not all alcohol is the same, and guess what, the dose makes the poison The author is clearly missing the evidence showing that 5 glasses a week of red wine are good for your health。 Same goes for coffee for up to 6 cups a day, proven to be beneficial for a vast number of health conditions, including prevention from lover cancer among others。 Here the author just says basically "do not take any caffeine as its half life is like 8 hours" No mention of why some people remember perfectly their dreams and others don't remember anything (like me!)No mention of polyphasic cycles and its science No mention of currently available transcranial electric stimulators of sleep。 Kinda essential in the last chapter focussed on describing the future of sleep This book is missing many more extremely important points that anyone interested in the science of sleep would have wanted to learn about in 。。。more

4。5 stars。 This is a super overview of everything you really wanted to know about sleep。 It is scientific, but very digestible, easy to read, and keeps your interest throughout。 I have a much greater appreciation for sleep, and gained a lot of tools on how to improve or make the most of it。 I strongly recommend it for people who don't get more than 7 hours of sleep, who try to "catch up" on the weekends, who have any sort of sleeping problem, or who have younger kids or older parents who seem to 4。5 stars。 This is a super overview of everything you really wanted to know about sleep。 It is scientific, but very digestible, easy to read, and keeps your interest throughout。 I have a much greater appreciation for sleep, and gained a lot of tools on how to improve or make the most of it。 I strongly recommend it for people who don't get more than 7 hours of sleep, who try to "catch up" on the weekends, who have any sort of sleeping problem, or who have younger kids or older parents who seem to sleep too little, too much, or a inconvenient times。 The main drawback I had with this book is it is presented in a way that there is nothing sleep can't improve, without any criticism or counter arguments ever really discussed。 。。。more

I mean, I knew getting enough sleep was important, I just didn't know HOW important。 This book is chock-full of relevant scientific studies, which try to determine why we sleep, but also highlight what happens if we don't get enough。Highly recommended。 (FYI, I see this shelved as 'self-help', but it's mostly science with some actionable points at the end。) I mean, I knew getting enough sleep was important, I just didn't know HOW important。 This book is chock-full of relevant scientific studies, which try to determine why we sleep, but also highlight what happens if we don't get enough。Highly recommended。 (FYI, I see this shelved as 'self-help', but it's mostly science with some actionable points at the end。) 。。。more
