Summary

My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie。 I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973。 My murderer was a man from our neighborhood。 My mother liked his border flowers, and my father talked to him once about fertilizer。 This is Susie Salmon。 Watching from heaven, Susie sees her happy suburban family devastated by her death, isolated even from one another as they each try to cope with their terrible loss alone。

Read twice。 Very well written。 Interesting perspective of the dead girl and how her death affected her parents, siblings, and friends。

The Lovely Bones takes nearly 300 pages to say what can be said in a sentence: tragedy changes people's lives, but they eventually move on from it as well as they can。 It's not a bad theme to explore as part of a story, but the problem here is that it's the ENTIRE book。 Nothing happens in this book; it's all just people being sad until one day they're sort of better and then it's is over。 The Lovely Bones takes nearly 300 pages to say what can be said in a sentence: tragedy changes people's lives, but they eventually move on from it as well as they can。 It's not a bad theme to explore as part of a story, but the problem here is that it's the ENTIRE book。 Nothing happens in this book; it's all just people being sad until one day they're sort of better and then it's is over。 。。。more

I somehow missed all the hype at the time, so this book has been lurking around in my recommendations for a while - here on Goodreads, on Amazon based on previous purchases, all over the internet when googleing lists of books to read。 So I finally read it。 And it's。。。 nice。 Usually it takes me a few chapters to get into a book, chipping away at it over a few days until I'm sucked in and after that I can't put it down。 This one was the opposite。 Starts really strongly, but then fizzles out。 There I somehow missed all the hype at the time, so this book has been lurking around in my recommendations for a while - here on Goodreads, on Amazon based on previous purchases, all over the internet when googleing lists of books to read。 So I finally read it。 And it's。。。 nice。 Usually it takes me a few chapters to get into a book, chipping away at it over a few days until I'm sucked in and after that I can't put it down。 This one was the opposite。 Starts really strongly, but then fizzles out。 There were moments early on when the writer seemed to be introducing a potential development, a direction of travel for the story, emphasis put on something in a way that felt like that will become significant later on, but then nothing came of these。The writing style is a little bit annoying, trying too hard to be clever。 I regularly had to go back and re-read a sentence to keep up with where it was going。 The voice of the narrator didn't feel like that of a 14-year-old girl, but maybe people can age in heaven? And I was disappointed in the conclusion - or lack of。But, for all my negativity I read the whole book。 I mostly enjoyed it at the time of reading and only realised these faults later on when thinking back。 Excepting one disturbing scene towards the end that felt out-of-character and completely creepy and unnecessary, not fitting in with the tone of the book as a whole, and which I hated straight away。 。。。more

I love that this book takes you through so many years, and shows the ripple effect that Susie’s death had on her community and family。 There were some parts that went a little slow, some syntax that I cringed at for being silly, many cringe inducing metaphors and some confusing character developments。 Nevertheless, the story itself is powerful and fascinating。

For the most part I enjoyed this book。 Put me out of my comfort zone。 Made me wonder how many children met similar fates through the years。 It was interesting to see her stuck in a sort of limbo while she watched everyone else move on with their lives。 It was also interesting to see how each character processed the MC's death。 Her father was obsessive。 Her mother ran。 Her sister shut off emotions。 The potential boyfriend。 The cop。 The murderer。 The perspectives were the strength of this novel。 U For the most part I enjoyed this book。 Put me out of my comfort zone。 Made me wonder how many children met similar fates through the years。 It was interesting to see her stuck in a sort of limbo while she watched everyone else move on with their lives。 It was also interesting to see how each character processed the MC's death。 Her father was obsessive。 Her mother ran。 Her sister shut off emotions。 The potential boyfriend。 The cop。 The murderer。 The perspectives were the strength of this novel。 Unfortunately, it all fell apart towards the end。 Pieces tied up too neatly and the possession is absolutely ridiculous。 First of all, the possession itself was unnecessary, but the actions during the possession was far worse。 Imaging the girl who was possessed。 What would she be feeling? No, because MC trumps all and she needs the closure。 The beginning is the strongest part of this book。 The rest went on too long。 And honestly, though the movie wasn't perfect, I preferred some of the changes they made。 Especially the ending。 。。。more

I felt bored most of the time reading this story and was rarely engaged。 It simply didn’t work for me。

Finished the audiobook, but I should have DNF'ed this days ago。 I had been wanting to read this book for awhile because of its popularity and I have seen the movie adaptation。 I did not like the writer's style and don't know why I let myself struggle through the entire thing。 The audiobook was read by the author and it fell flat。 At points I did enjoy the various ways that all the characters dealt with their grief, but this book was twice as long as it needed to be。 Finished the audiobook, but I should have DNF'ed this days ago。 I had been wanting to read this book for awhile because of its popularity and I have seen the movie adaptation。 I did not like the writer's style and don't know why I let myself struggle through the entire thing。 The audiobook was read by the author and it fell flat。 At points I did enjoy the various ways that all the characters dealt with their grief, but this book was twice as long as it needed to be。 。。。more

Giallo che svela l’assassino dal primo capitolo ma riesce a farti finire a lettura。 Un briciolo di magia tra le sue pagine。

4+ stars。 The beginning is a brutal and horrifying but there are some amazing parts throughout。 There are so many emotions and so many ways people deal with grief, a lot of which a really well woven together throughout this story。

Frances

Haunting and at times breath taking。

Incredible book。 A beautiful look at the intersectionality of the spiritual and physical world。 Has heavy themes of the afterlife(Heaven) and loss。 Fast-paced beginning with a slow-paced middle and ending that is intricate and powerful。

Un libro que no puede dejar a nadie indiferente。 No sé cuantas veces ne habré emocionado leyendo。

I didn't think I was going to like this book but I LOVED it! It was a great story telling of what happens after death not just to the loved ones left behind but to each person in their own heaven。 The death itself was a terrible act but the authors interpretation of the afterlife kept me at ease the entire book。 I didn't think I was going to like this book but I LOVED it! I really enjoyed this read but just a couple things held it back。 I think the opening death scene was a bit more graphic than it needed to be and the ending was a bit more drawn out than I would have liked。 I do wish some of the characters were a bit more fleshed out。 But this book was very up my alley。 It followed a whole cast of characters and I loved all the little details Sebold chose to point out about their behavior。 This book is much darker and grimier than I was expecting, but in the end I really enjoyed this read but just a couple things held it back。 I think the opening death scene was a bit more graphic than it needed to be and the ending was a bit more drawn out than I would have liked。 I do wish some of the characters were a bit more fleshed out。 But this book was very up my alley。 It followed a whole cast of characters and I loved all the little details Sebold chose to point out about their behavior。 This book is much darker and grimier than I was expecting, but in the end it balanced hope, grief, melancholy, and death all impressively well。 。。。more

From a philosophical or literary perspective I would definitely give this book a higher rating 。。。 but since I read primarily for personal enjoyment I will rate on that

Sooooo I read this with my11th grade son。 he was immediately turned off by it since its about a 14 yr old girl getting murdered。 he had to read it for school so I followed along myself to read what he was reading in case he had questions, concerns, or didn't understand it。 some of the wording was weird。 something about the way the author described things threw me off。 but I liked Susie and her dad, Ray and Ruth and grandma Lynn right away。 my son gave up in it, having very little faith it was go Sooooo I read this with my11th grade son。 he was immediately turned off by it since its about a 14 yr old girl getting murdered。 he had to read it for school so I followed along myself to read what he was reading in case he had questions, concerns, or didn't understand it。 some of the wording was weird。 something about the way the author described things threw me off。 but I liked Susie and her dad, Ray and Ruth and grandma Lynn right away。 my son gave up in it, having very little faith it was good。 he is squeamish so many parts he just felt too uncomfortable to continue。but I enjoyed it。 。。。more

At first, I was intrigued at the beginning 'cause of the sudden change of events in the very first chapter I honestly got disappointed by the end。 I won't spoil much。 Though, it was well written as I was hooked for 3 days straight。 I would recommend it as a book to raise awareness for rape victims & sexual assault! I read this in Grade nine so don't remember the actual writing style that others are referring to, but I remember being so attached to the book。 I couldn't talk to my male best friend for weeks after finishing it。 I read this in Grade nine so don't remember the actual writing style that others are referring to, but I remember being so attached to the book。 I couldn't talk to my male best friend for weeks after finishing it。 。。。more

Over and over for years and years I have had this book suggested to me。 I always thought one day I would get to reading it。 Man did I wait too long。 I wish I could have used this book for a book report in school。 To give a recommendation worthy of this book。I thought this book would be about a child with bone cancer from the title but was I ever wrong。Susie was a 14 year old girl murdered。 This book follows her life before and after death。 As she is in the in between she follows her family throu Over and over for years and years I have had this book suggested to me。 I always thought one day I would get to reading it。 Man did I wait too long。 I wish I could have used this book for a book report in school。 To give a recommendation worthy of this book。I thought this book would be about a child with bone cancer from the title but was I ever wrong。Susie was a 14 year old girl murdered。 This book follows her life before and after death。 As she is in the in between she follows her family through the years as they work to solve her case。This book touched my heart。 Susie is so wise for her years and the lessons hidden within the words of these pages are beautiful。I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a heart warming, gut wrenching, make you cry, but also make you laugh kind of book。 。。。more
