From the planet of war they came to conquer the Earth 。。。

The night after a shooting star is seen streaking across the sky, a cylinder is discovered on Horsell Common。 Fascinated and exhilarated, the local people approach the mysterious object armed with nothing more than a white flag。 But when gruesome alien creatures emerge armed with all-destroying heat-rays, their rashness turns rapidly to fear。 As the rays blaze towards them, it soon becomes clear they have no choice but to flee - or die。

The forces of the Earth, however, may prove harder to beat than they at first appear 。。。

foundational to scifi as a genre but a very boring read for me personally

My friend, who I love, recommended this book to me。 It was a good break from reading YA and romance all the time and it got me out of a book slump。 It reminds of Ray Bradbury's books and reading it was pretty interesting。 Makes me want to read more sci fi classics because they're a genre of book I already knew I loved。 It was an interesting take on an Earth invasion, but it wasn't really an amazing book。 I like it though。 My friend, who I love, recommended this book to me。 It was a good break from reading YA and romance all the time and it got me out of a book slump。 It reminds of Ray Bradbury's books and reading it was pretty interesting。 Makes me want to read more sci fi classics because they're a genre of book I already knew I loved。 It was an interesting take on an Earth invasion, but it wasn't really an amazing book。 I like it though。 。。。more

More philosophical than science fiction-y

Listened to this as an audiobookI read this for my summer book to film adaptation class。 I found the book more interesting then I expected。 I enjoyed how it was written especially given the when it was written。

This is one of those books that I read because it's a classic and you're supposed to have read the classics。 But my heavens it was hard to get through。 Not even because of the language (though that required multiple google searches for words no longer in common use 125 years later), but because of the utter lack of imagination our great-grandfathers had。 Fantastical images back then are just。。。 mundane now。 Flying machines! Well that's not possible! Uhmmmm。。。。 yeah。 But anyway, I finished it。 This is one of those books that I read because it's a classic and you're supposed to have read the classics。 But my heavens it was hard to get through。 Not even because of the language (though that required multiple google searches for words no longer in common use 125 years later), but because of the utter lack of imagination our great-grandfathers had。 Fantastical images back then are just。。。 mundane now。 Flying machines! A masterpiece of science fiction。 The fact that this is horrifying today means it must have been even more wild in the 1890s when it was written。

One of my favorite science fiction novels of all time。 Super interesting concept and amazing storytelling。 Have re-read it multiple times and will probably re-read it again soon。 Shame the movie wasn't as good :/If you haven't read it, read it One of my favorite science fiction novels of all time。 Super interesting concept and amazing storytelling。 Have re-read it multiple times and will probably re-read it again soon。 Shame the movie wasn't as good :/If you haven't read it, read it 。。。more

Please rake into consideration that this was written in 1898。 If you keep that in mind you should thoroughly enjoy this book。 I even did a little digging, apparently when the released the radio version of this story in the 1930s in America it caused quite a panic。

This book does a good job of drawing you in and holding on to your attention。 The storyline is easy to follow and well written。

Much more engaging than I expected。 And richer。 Well worth reading。 I am so glad that I found a large print copy; squinting at cheap editions never worked for me, and I dreaded trying to read it digitally。A map would be nice though。 It's not necessary, but there are a *lot* of place names thrown out, a lot of travelling, and it would be fun to follow along。I appreciate the comparison of Martian::Man to Man::ant, but even more so the recognition that we don't just wipe out ants, but we commit atr Much more engaging than I expected。 And richer。 Well worth reading。 I am so glad that I found a large print copy; squinting at cheap editions never worked for me, and I dreaded trying to read it digitally。A map would be nice though。 It's not necessary, but there are a *lot* of place names thrown out, a lot of travelling, and it would be fun to follow along。I appreciate the comparison of Martian::Man to Man::ant, but even more so the recognition that we don't just wipe out ants, but we commit atrocities on mass scale against fellow humans。I'm especially impressed by, and find myself enjoying, the chapter near the end with the artilleryman。 The least interesting thing he says is "Dying's none so dreadful; it's the funking makes it bad。"And the descriptions of spectral, quiet London。 And the sort of PTSD the author admits to in the epilogue。 Etc。 Just a wonderful novel, worthy of its reputation。 。。。more

The theme of the stupidity of the human race was quite funny to me and you can see how this book has heavily influenced modern sci-fi。

To this day, one of my favorite science fiction stories。

Good, short story。 Interesting story about Martians invading us。

This is obviously an incredibly pioneering and influential work, but it's also pretty boring。 The ideas and themes in it kept me generally interested, but nothing really happened plotwise。 Which I get is part of the point, but it doesn't make for a terribly exciting read。 A lot of it reads more like a Wikipedia recital of events than a novel。 I recently read Brave New World, and they're both similar in that the worlds are really interesting, but the plots are kind of boring。 This is obviously an incredibly pioneering and influential work, but it's also pretty boring。 The ideas and themes in it kept me generally interested, but nothing really happened plotwise。 Which I get is part of the point, but it doesn't make for a terribly exciting read。 A lot of it reads more like a Wikipedia recital of events than a novel。 I recently read Brave New World, and they're both similar in that the worlds are really interesting, but the plots are kind of boring。 。。。more

Started off really well but the ending was quite boring。 Much preferred the movie 🤣

I was going to rate it 4 stars, but then the Epilogue upped it to 5 for me。 It was good all around, and I enjoyed it。 I loved the introspection of the narrator throughout the whole thing, but the overwhelming sense of strangeness and surrealness that permeates that last scene really was the icing on the tasty science-fiction cake。 How fun that after all that heat-ray, violent show, it's bacteria and disease that obliterate the Martian invaders。 Through it all, the narrator had such a level head。 I was going to rate it 4 stars, but then the Epilogue upped it to 5 for me。 It was good all around, and I enjoyed it。 I loved the introspection of the narrator throughout the whole thing, but the overwhelming sense of strangeness and surrealness that permeates that last scene really was the icing on the tasty science-fiction cake。 How fun that after all that heat-ray, violent show, it's bacteria and disease that obliterate the Martian invaders。 Through it all, the narrator had such a level head。 It almost felt like disassociation the whole way through。 And I totally loved that, honestly。 。。。more

I read this with a student。 While often dramatic, it dragged on interminably, and I longed for it to end。

I have to admit, though this was decent enough, it was a bit of a let down given the amount of praise it gets。 I enjoyed the Time Machine a lot so was expecting great things from this, but it just felt a bit flat。 It really really reminded me of Day of the Triffids, so, even though it was written first, it didn't seem very original to me at all。 I have to admit, though this was decent enough, it was a bit of a let down given the amount of praise it gets。 I enjoyed the Time Machine a lot so was expecting great things from this, but it just felt a bit flat。 It really really reminded me of Day of the Triffids, so, even though it was written first, it didn't seem very original to me at all。 。。。more

Wells invented cliches for a Hollywood blockbuster before Hollywood had any。 He was truly a visionary: predicted all possible plot twist for the post-apocalyptic stories。 Except one - in his book aliens attacked Britain not the USA。
