Brainpickings

Living at the limits of our ordinary perception, mosses are a common but largely unnoticed element of the natural world。 Gathering Moss is a beautifully written mix of science and personal reflection that invites readers to explore and learn from the elegantly simple lives of mosses。

In these interwoven essays, Robin Wall Kimmerer leads general readers and scientists alike to an understanding of how mosses live and how their lives are intertwined with the lives of countless other beings。 Kimmerer explains the biology of mosses clearly and artfully, while at the same time reflecting on what these fascinating organisms have to teach us。

Drawing on her experiences as a scientist, a mother, and a Native American, Kimmerer explains the stories of mosses in scientific terms as well as within the framework of indigenous ways of knowing。 In her book, the natural history and cultural relationships of mosses become a powerful metaphor for ways of living in the world。

I'm so glad this was suggested to me。 It's beautifully written。 I'm now so intrigued & interested in learning the name of the moss/mosses we've found in our backyard。 I loved the chapter where she talked about the ways they've been used in the past! This one isn’t quite as mainstream-accessible as Braiding Sweetgrass - which is a complete masterpiece IMO 。 But anyone interested in the inter connectivity of plants and forest life and ecology will find this interesting。 Plus。。 I listened to it on audible read by the author and her voice is so calming。

I enjoyed this book so immensely。 It’s beautifully written, and with such a tender and personal voice。 Kimmerer’s writing combines natural science and storytelling, in such a way that even those of us who are not scientists can easily follow and become engrossed in the lives and stories of mosses。 When I go for walks now I pay much more attention to mosses, crouching down at looking at them as closely as possible。 They really do look like miniature forests! Shockingly amazing。Top ten book of all time。I say shocking because it's a book about moss。 How interesting could it be? But Robin Wall Kimmerer is truly a voice of our time for rethinking our relationship with nature。 I will absolutely eat up anything I can find by here - and scoure podcasts looking to learn more from her。She has a lot to teach and I'd advocate absolutely anyone and everyone to follow her。 Her book braiding sweetgrass is much more broadly interesting, so I would start there。 But Shockingly amazing。Top ten book of all time。I say shocking because it's a book about moss。 How interesting could it be? I love random nonfiction books that dive really deep into a specific topic like this one did on mosses。 I had no idea there was a whole microcosm of mosses that are not unlike what happens at our scale in forests。 The appreciation I have for mosses now and their value to me is so much greater after reading this book。 Also I love Robin Wall Kimmerer and loved Braiding Sweetgrass, so this was a lovely reminder of Indigenous Ways of Knowing。

Must read for pride month! You too can read about sequential hermadrophite moss today。

It is a book about moss and I really loved it! I recommend listening to the audiobook version walking through the woods, the author narrates and has a very soothing voice which makes for almost a meditative experience。 I have a much greater appreciation for mosses and the relationship of all living beings with each other on Earth

For me, an audiobook of a Robin Wall Kimmerer book, read by the author, is almost its own genre。 The two I've listened to are two of my favorite in the format, and I hope there are more to come。 I almost never prefer audio to text, but her voice and obvious love for the subjects of her books add so much to the experience。 For me, an audiobook of a Robin Wall Kimmerer book, read by the author, is almost its own genre。 The two I've listened to are two of my favorite in the format, and I hope there are more to come。 I almost never prefer audio to text, but her voice and obvious love for the subjects of her books add so much to the experience。 。。。more

The way she weaves stories from her life and experiences into learning about and from mosses, plants, and life in relationship to people and the land is beautiful and a gift。 I listened to the audiobook and it is a joy to listen to。

One part memoir, one part scientific information, and one part cultural history。A little rambling, but absolutely packed with moss facts and trivia。Deffinitely one you to read in text to get the full effect, but I'm glad the author got to record the audio version herself。 She clealy has a deep respect for the subject that is enhanced both by her scientific understanding and her cultural traditions related to the topic。 One part memoir, one part scientific information, and one part cultural history。A little rambling, but absolutely packed with moss facts and trivia。Deffinitely one you to read in text to get the full effect, but I'm glad the author got to record the audio version herself。 She clealy has a deep respect for the subject that is enhanced both by her scientific understanding and her cultural traditions related to the topic。 。。。more

I love how Robin Wall Kimmerer writes about botany。 She weaves in memoir and indigenous wisdom in such a beautiful way。 I enjoyed this book, but it got a little to above my head in the science department。 Solidly good。 I truly hope that Kimmerer writes more。 Braiding Sweetgrass was one of my favorite books last year。
