It was 5 years ago when my father told me that the house of spirits was a copy of 100 years of solitude。 I always been very aprehensive about reading this novel because of this 。 But I discover one copy on my bookshelf and i told myself ， maybe it's time to read it and build my own opinion。 Needlest to say that my thoughs about this novel changed one and over again in the course of the novel。If you ask me， it's a good story ？ my answer will be yes it looks like 100 years of solitude ？ ， in some It was 5 years ago when my father told me that the house of spirits was a copy of 100 years of solitude。 I always been very aprehensive about reading this novel because of this 。 But I discover one copy on my bookshelf and i told myself ， maybe it's time to read it and build my own opinion。 Needlest to say that my thoughs about this novel changed one and over again in the course of the novel。If you ask me， it's a good story ？ my answer will be yes it looks like 100 years of solitude ？ ， in some parts yes ， some parts of the novel were almost indentical ， i can see clearly that Isabel Allende loved the writing style of Garcìa Marquez。Negative Points*There's some inconsistencies in the novel ， the autor make use of the resourse of anticipate to the reader what is going to happen， unfortunately things do not always happen as she had said。 And that creates inconsistencies， like some revenge to the whole family that didn't happen like she said。*Some Characteres and situacions seems almost like a copy of 100 years of solitude 。 For Example Ferula's character look very much like Amaranta ， the arrive of Barrabas was practicaly the same as Melquiades， and Rosa is a twin of Remedios la Bella。* Esteban's granddaughter it's a character that has not personality at all ， and that makes the end of the novel much disappointed as it is。Positive Points *Clara Clarividente was a very solid character very pleasant to read。* The relationship beetween Blanca and Pedro Tercero was by far one of my favorite things。 * Jaime has pass to the history like one of the best characters that i ever read before。*The Political situacion that Chile lived during Allende's and Pinochet's goverment was portrait perfectly。 。。。more

Perhaps a tad overlong and I was finding the book a bit of a slog。 The magic realism especially was very derivative of Marquez without attaining similar heights of lyricism。 However， the last 100 pages and especially the epilogue were quite brilliant。 Three stars overall。

This story moves steadily and inevitably to its conclusion and pulls everything together beautifully in the end。 I saw it as primarily the story of Esteban Trueba and his redemption through the passing of time and the love of， and for， his granddaughter。 I felt that his character changed the most changed throughout the book。

I wanted to love this book， but alas I did not。 In fact my desire to even finish it waned with every page turned， and there were just so many pages。 So many characters， so many places， so many storylines intertwining… but I was left with the question， “What is the point？” The story just meandered along with no real aim or purpose。 The characters were either too overbearing or too insipid， and none of them all that likable。 The writing itself jumped from third person to first person from one para I wanted to love this book， but alas I did not。 In fact my desire to even finish it waned with every page turned， and there were just so many pages。 So many characters， so many places， so many storylines intertwining… but I was left with the question， “What is the point？” The story just meandered along with no real aim or purpose。 The characters were either too overbearing or too insipid， and none of them all that likable。 The writing itself jumped from third person to first person from one paragraph to another， making it very disjointed and jarring to read。 Especially seeing as the character chosen as the first person voice was such a pig， why give a voice to such a character over other far more interesting characters that needed fleshing out？The first few chapters piqued my interest enough to keep reading， and the last few chapters were interesting enough that I didn't feel completely disappointed。 But everything in between I found very long-winded and frustrating to read。 2。5 stars。 。。。more

The House of the Spirits is an magical realism book following a family across four generations in Chile from the late 1800s to the 1960s。 It's always hard to comment on prose when talking about a translated work， but the intentionality of the writing as I experienced it was impressive。 I do imagine a level of lyricism was lost from the original Spanish， however。 I'm so glad I read A Hundred Years of Solitude before this because the influence is obvious and it's been interesting to contrast the t The House of the Spirits is an magical realism book following a family across four generations in Chile from the late 1800s to the 1960s。 It's always hard to comment on prose when talking about a translated work， but the intentionality of the writing as I experienced it was impressive。 I do imagine a level of lyricism was lost from the original Spanish， however。 I'm so glad I read A Hundred Years of Solitude before this because the influence is obvious and it's been interesting to contrast the two books while reading。 The main differences， besides the time and location of the stories， is that Allende's book is much more rooted in the real world， compared to Marquez's。 That makes the magic maybe feel a little less real， or rather more open to the interpretation of the reader， and it also makes the privations and atrocities experienced by the characters have much more impact。 This book has a ton of great observations on class and politics， and most especially on the harshly felt fascist turn at the end of the story。 It also emphasizes the shared humanity we all have across social and political lines， and ends on a hopeful note of forgiveness。 Over all I very much enjoyed reading this book， and feel it very much deserves its place as a classic of international literature。 。。。more

"La casa de los espíritus" es la historia de una saga familiar， llena de muerte， de amor y de magia， centrado en la figura del despótico y tiránico patriarca Esteban Trueba， y todas las personas que pasaron por su vida durante los noventa largos años que vivió。 Muchos personajes se van a cruzar en esta historia， mientras el protagonismo va galopando de uno a otro conforme la trama va avanzando， pero siempre con la figura de Trueba como eje central。Si os soy sincero， pese a que al final me ha enc "La casa de los espíritus" es la historia de una saga familiar， llena de muerte， de amor y de magia， centrado en la figura del despótico y tiránico patriarca Esteban Trueba， y todas las personas que pasaron por su vida durante los noventa largos años que vivió。 Muchos personajes se van a cruzar en esta historia， mientras el protagonismo va galopando de uno a otro conforme la trama va avanzando， pero siempre con la figura de Trueba como eje central。Si os soy sincero， pese a que al final me ha encantando la obra y ha sido muy gratificante leerlo， me costó mucho meterme en la historia。 Los dos o tres primeros capítulos me dejaron un poco desconcertado。 Quizás tenía unas ideas preconcebidas sobra el libro y no me esperaba un protagonista tan detestable como Esteban Trueba。 Es un villano hecho protagonista y a veces las barbaridades que hacía me costaba asimilarlas， sobre todo cuando las narraba en primera persona。 Pero en cuanto empezaron a aparecer los personajes femeninos， que hay muchos y bastante interesantes， se relajo esto y ya solo fue disfrute。Aunque el libro está narrado por una tercera persona que está contando la historia， a veces， había trocitos narrados en primera persona por Esteban Trueba que， como ya he dicho， al principio me sacaban un poco de mis casillas。 Pero finalmente me parecieron un recurso bastante interesante， ya que mientras que cuando el narraba justifica sus acciones， cuando volvíamos a la tercera persona， eramos capaces de comprender la magnitud de su egoísmo y maldad。 Un detallito que tampoco me gustó es que hay demasiadas escenas de maltratao animal。 Demasiadas。 Hay muchos personajes en esta obra pero los que destacan mucho son el mismísimo trueba， Pedro Tercero， Miguel， y mis favoritas， el trío que representan Clara， Blanca y Alba， abuela， madre e hija。 Quizás Clara ha sido mi favorita porque me ha parecido que dentro de su pacífica actitud， era la más justa con los demás y tanjante ante las acciones de Esteban， su marido。 Alba también me ha gustado mucho， sobre todo en los últimos capítulos， que son una pasada。 Un personaje maravilloso， que se ha quedado muy desaprovechado es Tránsito Soto， necesitamos una novela sobre ella。 Una de las cosas más disfrutables de la novela， es ese contexto histórico， la transformación que sufre Chile a lo largo de todos estos años。 Esa derecha que creía tener el poder para siempre， como un derecho divino， que finalmente va perdiendo poco a poco cuando las personas más humildes empiezan a alzarse y reclamar sus derechos。 Como la victoria de la izquierda， es ensombrecida por las estrategias de la derecha， con un golpe de estado como resultado。 Flipante lo bien reflejado que está， como se va fraguando todo。 De las cosas que más me han gustado。Me ha sorprendido ver que la parte más mágica de este realismo mágico， llega un punto en la novela que prácticamente desaparece y se vuelve solo realista。 Los últimos capítulos son durísimos， y rompen un poco con la tónica de la novela， y lo hacen en el buen sentido， porque son espectaculares。 De hecho esta parte mágica es aportada， principalmente por Clara， mi personaje favorito de la historia。 En difinitiva， me ha gustado mucho y aunque no ha sido todo lo que esperaba después de años de expectación， sí que me ha parecido una obra muy buena。 。。。more

This is a modern classic for a reason。 The epic sweep of the story was impressive - both the story of the central family and the unnamed country that resembles Chile。 I loved the magical realism and the somewhat circular story telling - both made the story feel somewhat like a myth， or a fantastical story passed down through a family。

I love reading Isabell Alende， she writes beautifully and her epic saga stories are jam packed full of action and events。 This particular book takes place， I suspect in Chile， beginning post World War I and concluding during the coup of Pinochet。 Four female characters lead us through this time period。 This book contains some magical realism which I found entertaining。
