3rd time reading this, first time I’ve logged it on good reads。For anyone checking the review score before buying, it’s worth noting that the one and two star ratings are mostly from ‘feminists’ complaining about some scantily clad females (happy to ignore the naked men to take their complaints to the extreme) rather than any focus on the actual story or what the creative team are trying to achieve。 If you buy and judge comics for the ‘feminist’ agenda boxes they tick then, this might not be for 3rd time reading this, first time I’ve logged it on good reads。For anyone checking the review score before buying, it’s worth noting that the one and two star ratings are mostly from ‘feminists’ complaining about some scantily clad females (happy to ignore the naked men to take their complaints to the extreme) rather than any focus on the actual story or what the creative team are trying to achieve。 If you buy and judge comics for the ‘feminist’ agenda boxes they tick then, this might not be for you。 If you have the ability to judge art away from an unhealthy and all encompassing obsession over gender and feminist politics OR If your feminist agenda is orientated more to the inclusion of strong female characters then read on。 If you are looking for something to be offended by I hope you are at least buying the book and not reading it illegally, so you are at least contributing something to the industry and creators who pour their heart into this stuff。 This is the first volume in an amazing sci fi epic that can also be read as a study on depression and the power of cognitive behavioural therapy and how we can use positive thinking to reframe our outlook and overtime completely rewire our thought processes and change our lives。 It is a book that will have a positive impact to those open to this form of therapy, which is based on relatively recent scientific discoveries on how our brains work and how we can indeed form new neural pathways which do over time give the benefit of a change in our mindset。 I’d urge anyone with an open mind to move past the comments from the perpetually offended hate brigade and indulge in a series which has been very successful in other countries (IE France) where they are more open minded than the U。K。 and the US and less likely to lose their shit at the female form being depicted in graphic storytelling。It’s worth noting that this volume sets the scene for what is to come in what is a relatively long form series; most readers who are not new to comics will be familiar with this concept。 The volumes that follow get progressively better, but this volume is essential laying off of the foundations。Sadly Good Reads has now been infiltrated by the same divisive arguments that are rife on social media and other sites and in cases like this review scores cannot be relied upon due to he minority of arseholes providing a score based on politics as opposed to quality the material they are supposed to be, therefore for the majority of us who just want a bit of escapism from this constant fucking bin fire, must suffer。 。。。more

It promises originality, but it’s a familiar story in an undersea post-apocalyptic setting。 It flips from dull to gory and back a lot, and I had trouble sensing a point。 Stay Optimistic, I guess。 Something unexpected will spring up and save us, unless it doesn’t。 The artwork is dreamy - lush and fluid, but also like a dream to a waking mind, hard to follow。 I’m not hooked。

It took me some time to get into, it's confusing at first cause the characters are very similar。 But the artwork helped a lot to keep me there and I enjoyed it at the end。 It took me some time to get into, it's confusing at first cause the characters are very similar。 But the artwork helped a lot to keep me there and I enjoyed it at the end。 。。。more

Dit valt tegen。。。 Ik ben geen fan van de tekeningen。 Ze zijn met momenten ook heel seksueel。 Een beetje te voor mij。 Het verhaal is ok, maar beetje verwarrend。

Loving the premise and the story so far, but the art is really not my cup of tea and took this from being a solid four-star book into a low three。 I find the colour palate in particular to be excruciating。 I don't know。。。 I'm going to stick with it because I love me some Remender, but I'm really not digging the art at all。 Loving the premise and the story so far, but the art is really not my cup of tea and took this from being a solid four-star book into a low three。 I find the colour palate in particular to be excruciating。 I don't know。。。 I'm going to stick with it because I love me some Remender, but I'm really not digging the art at all。 。。。more

Actual rating: 2。5 starsI didn't like this book as much as I was hoping to。 I love the concept of this series and underwater societies。 However, I just feel like this didn't live up to its potential。 Some parts of this book were beautiful。 Whenever the characters travelled underwater and we got a chance to see some of the world building, it was fantastic。 However, a lot of the interim was just not needed。 I was honestly disappointed of the illustrations too, which is a first for me when it comes Actual rating: 2。5 starsI didn't like this book as much as I was hoping to。 I love the concept of this series and underwater societies。 However, I just feel like this didn't live up to its potential。 Some parts of this book were beautiful。 Whenever the characters travelled underwater and we got a chance to see some of the world building, it was fantastic。 However, a lot of the interim was just not needed。 I was honestly disappointed of the illustrations too, which is a first for me when it comes to graphic novels。 Some pages were gorgeous but others were just SO busy it hurt to look at。 There was just way too much going on without enough details to actually read well。 I was pissed at the end of the book when I saw alternate variations by Greg Tocchini。 You're telling me we could have had this book in his gorgeous water color style? It honestly would have been so much better! That being said, I really don't have any desire to continue on with the series but I already own the second volume and checked out the 3rd and 4th volumes from the library。 So I guess expect reviews from me soon。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I initially picked this up years ago because of the art, but then I just never got to actually reading it。 Well, now I finally did, and I'm not really sure what to think。 The art is very beautiful, I mean, the colours in particular are so vibrant and nice to look at。 I have to admit some pages were hard to follow due to the visual overlaod, it could be hard to tell what the characters were actually doing at times becuase the character acting could get very vague。 But sequences like Stel and Mari I initially picked this up years ago because of the art, but then I just never got to actually reading it。 Well, now I finally did, and I'm not really sure what to think。 The art is very beautiful, I mean, the colours in particular are so vibrant and nice to look at。 I have to admit some pages were hard to follow due to the visual overlaod, it could be hard to tell what the characters were actually doing at times becuase the character acting could get very vague。 But sequences like Stel and Marik swimming up from their ship were truly just amazing。 I also like the premise of the story。 The whole thing with the sun dying and humanity living deep underwater to survive the harsh surface。 It's very interesting, especially since the plot takes place ages after humanity first settles in the depths of our seas, and society there has had time to develop。 I just feel like the interesting bits got no time to breathe or settle, and some took very disappointing turns。 When Stel and Marik reach Poluma the city is introduced as a mystical place inhabited by scholars, and Roln shows us a glimpse of this city。 I thought it would be very interesting to see how this city would have developed compared to Salus, especially because they all valued knowledge and academics so much, which would contrast to the little we've seen of Salus, but then of course the evil pirate Roln murdered all the scholars and invited in all his fellow pirates to create a savage city he could rule instead。 We don't know why, he's just evil。 Yes, interesting, no wait, that isn't actually very interesting at all。I also found the pacing really awkward, and I think the pacing really killed a lot of the potential the plot had for me personally。 You aren't really allowed time to sit with the world or the concepts brought up, it's all very "throw-it-in-your-face-no-explanation-and-then-we-move-on"。 It might be because I'm a huge worldbuilding lover, but they introduced a potentially interesting world, but then never really let us explore it at all。 It was all very surface level, and it made the plot kind of hard to understand in the beginning。 I also have to mention how weird the timeskip felt。 We are introduced to Johl and his wife Stel, they bring their daughters out to。。。 fish? Then they are attacked, the father is brutally murdered and the daughters are kidnapped。 The thing is, the way things were framed, it kind of seemed like Roln was a very morally corrupt protagonist? Like here we have this huge high-tech deepsea city, and this important and seemingly powerful and rich family leave to hunt, they are met by a group of people attacking them, and the attackers say something along the lines of "we want you to stop hunting in our lands" and then Roln says something about his parents being killed by them。 So here's a group of outsiders, who are held out of a safe haven, left in a dangerous and desolate place, only to be killed by the priveleged city people? I can't help but feel a little bit sympathetic there, I've gotta say。 We are given no further explanation, and Stel and her husband both seem to agree with Roln's statements。 When Johl dies it's very sudden, and I can't help but just not feel a tiny bit sad。 It almost feels like a revenge story from Roln's side。 I get that Roln is shown to be very, very corrupt later, but that doesn't change how the fact that the people of Salus。。。 kind of are as well? However, I think the biggest issue I had with this were the characters。 They are all so thouroughly unlikable and unrelatable, it's sometimes difficult to really care at all about all the drama, and unfortunately there is a LOT of drama。I can't begin to explain the emotional whiplash I felt when the timeskip happened。 Not because I was sad over Johl's death, I was just not prepared for the sudden shift in tone, meaning I was not prepared for the amount of shock-value writing that was to come。 Marik starts off by being a nerdy little kid。 His father dies, and his sisters are kidnapped, alright, that would leave anyone worse off。 But he's not just depressed, no, he introduces the next chapter by mistreating a sex worker, then shooting her accidentaly after he refuses to pay her, and then he threatens to throw her pimp in a sea of toxic acid in an attempt to make the pimp confess to the murder。 He is arrested before the pimp is killed。 Oh, and he's also a police officer, so that makes things even better。 His mother comes and gets him out of prison right as he's trying to kill himself due to his guilt, and when he sees her he says "fuck it" and decides to do it right in front of her。 When he's out Stel doesn't seem at all interested in what he has done, no, no, it doesn't matter what you've DONE, see, it only matters what you DO。 Yeah, maybe if he stole something, but he did actually kill a sex worker, and while he seems to reflect on his guilt before his suicide attempt, this reads more as an attempt to garner sympathy from the reader than an actual redemption of his character。 The sex worker is never brought up again, and he never actually earns his character development。 The fact that he goes from this cynical, cold and corrupt man to suddenly, at the flip of a page (literally), being a hopeful man who fights for a better tomorrow is just sort of irritating to witness。 It is not deserved, it is not developed, it just sort of happens because the plot needs it to happen (and we need to like him again for when he tragically sacrifices himself for his sister and dies)。And Stel is just a whole other problem。 She isn't even necessarily a character, just a way to channel this message of hope and optimism。 I'd say for the first half of the book either the word "hope" or "optimism" appears at least once each page。 It's really hammered down that Stel is all about relentless hope。 Cool。 The way the women are treated is also。。。 just。。。 something。 Stel is usually wearing something incredibly revealing。 To the point where you see the outline of her breasts and nipples through whatever silky, sheer material she's wearing。 She's also constantly drawn in these odd sexualised positions that have nothing to do with whatever's happening, but this also goes for all the other female characters。 Most women that are not Stel are usually topless or wearing some sort of coloured stick-on bra and a thong。 Oh, and when Stel is reunited with one of her daughters (also dressed in said stick-on bra) she is captured and dressed in, guess what! Stick-on bra and thong。 She also looks just as old as her daughter, and is just as sexualised, which is just。。。 really really weird。 I feel this weird disconnect to the story。 Like, alright, they want to tell a story about hope winning over apathy and pessimism。 But then they show us how divided Salus is, there is a huge divide between the upper and lower classes。 Marik is shown to abuse his power and privelege, and is actively harming the most vulnerable in Salus。 While Stel seems completely oblivious and only cares for her son's wellbeing, not that he might be harmful to others。 Her whole "hope and optimism" belief along with her ignorance and classism reminds me of the whole "hopes and prayers" thing said by white women to cover for the fact that while they easily COULD use their influence and privelege to incite action and change, it is MUCH easier to say a couple good words and leave the rest to God。 Stel is not just unlikable, I downright do not root for her。 She's just not a good person, she's one-dimentional and very irritating。 And while she wishes to find this probe to save her city or whatever, I am not convinced she would give a single damn about the majority of the city living beneath her class。 There is just not a single redeeming quality to her besides the fact that she loves her children。The story tries so hard to make you care about this family surving a horrendous tragedy and saving the world, but then it goes in all these directions that makes it very hard to actually like, let alone root for the main characters。 And while I must admit I'm curious to see where this could possibly end up going, I don't think I'll be following the story further。 。。。more

Trigger warnings: Death, porn, horrible treatment of women, abuse of sex workers, child endangerment, possible paedophilia, blood and gore。 This one get a big old nope from me。 Just nope。Horrible treatment and writing of women。For a story where the main characters focused on hope。。。there was none here。 The artwork was a mess at points。Just disappointed。1\5 stars

This is the second graphic novel I have read by Rick Remender, after Tokyo Ghost, Vol。 1: Atomic Garden。。。 which I also gave 1 star。 I had bought them at the same time previously, as they both seemed interesting and had pretty covers。 After reading them, my opinion is。。。Rick Remender is an absolute shit writer。 I wish there was a "block author" feature on Amazon so that I don't accidentally buy any more garbage comics from him again。 I would liken reading his comics to scaling a spiked mountain This is the second graphic novel I have read by Rick Remender, after Tokyo Ghost, Vol。 1: Atomic Garden。。。 which I also gave 1 star。 I had bought them at the same time previously, as they both seemed interesting and had pretty covers。 After reading them, my opinion is。。。Rick Remender is an absolute shit writer。 I wish there was a "block author" feature on Amazon so that I don't accidentally buy any more garbage comics from him again。 I would liken reading his comics to scaling a spiked mountain of flaming shit-garbage that pierces so far through the heavens that it actually takes you to the hell of some far-off planet。Also, how do you write two separate comic series with female protagonists that both come off as feeling misogynistic? The art was the best thing about it。 Too much overtly-sexy moments that added nothing to the plot。 The characters didn't have a lot of depth, and at times, the story was so confusing。 The art was the best thing about it。 Too much overtly-sexy moments that added nothing to the plot。 The characters didn't have a lot of depth, and at times, the story was so confusing。 。。。more

This comic, like others had a pretty interesting setting。 However, I really couldn’t understand what was happening half the time。 It was really fast and too much was happening at once。 I just didn’t really enjoy it。 I might continue if I see the sequels at my library, but I don’t really see myself reading the rest。 The idea behind it is interesting, but I think there’s a disconnect between the readers and the characters。

Low is a dystopian sci-fi graphic novel with a compelling concept but I found the artwork hard to decipher, the mature audience rating well-founded (in a couple of brief gory scenes), the female characters inexplicably scantily clad most of the time, and the beef between the characters mostly unexplained。

This was great, however at times it was very hard to follow。。 I loved the artwork but the storyline was kind of discombobulated。。 Also at times, I felt like I was supposed to be emotional at certain characters dying。 But we didn't get enough time to care about them before they died。What made the Saga volumes so good? The fact that I cared immensely for the family。 But this moved too fast。 There wasn't enough world building background or family background for me。 This was great, however at times it was very hard to follow。。 I loved the artwork but the storyline was kind of discombobulated。。 Also at times, I felt like I was supposed to be emotional at certain characters dying。 But we didn't get enough time to care about them before they died。What made the Saga volumes so good? Hmmm。 The art is pretty - crude at times, but it works。 The fauna and the non-humans look fantastic。 Unfortunately I found the story a bit dull, and I was really unimpressed with the treatment of women; they're running out of clothes as well as air in these domes, are they? 🙄 Had a flick through volume 2 and it was more of the same so not going to bother carrying on。 Hmmm。 The art is pretty - crude at times, but it works。 The fauna and the non-humans look fantastic。 Unfortunately I found the story a bit dull, and I was really unimpressed with the treatment of women; they're running out of clothes as well as air in these domes, are they? 🙄 Had a flick through volume 2 and it was more of the same so not going to bother carrying on。 。。。more

This was a good first volume。 Definitely got me intrigued。 I really liked the characters and the premise is really interesting。 However, the art style is a little chaotic for my tastes (maybe I will adapt but this is where I am at right now!) and there were elements of the stories overall structure that could have been tighter to make it more compelling (such as Michael changing personalities all over the shop with not enough time dedicated to exploring it)。 It was also a little jarring to start This was a good first volume。 Definitely got me intrigued。 I really liked the characters and the premise is really interesting。 However, the art style is a little chaotic for my tastes (maybe I will adapt but this is where I am at right now!) and there were elements of the stories overall structure that could have been tighter to make it more compelling (such as Michael changing personalities all over the shop with not enough time dedicated to exploring it)。 It was also a little jarring to start with。 The creators give you basically no time to understand what is happening before you cut and run to the next thing (I knew this was the case before going in but it was still a bit much to actually experience it)。 I'll be continuing on, because Low has a lot of potential。。。 I just hope the next volume lives up to it!Rating: 2。5/5 or 5/10Reviews:Vol。 2: Before the Dawn Burns Us ⭐⭐⭐ Vol。 3: Shore of the Dying Light ⭐⭐⭐。5 Vol。 4: Outer Aspects of Inner Attitudes ⭐⭐⭐ 。。。more

Another graphic novel series with fantastic art and a unique setting。 There's elements here of Metabarons, Sunshine, and Pacific Rim。 Maybe even a little Mad Max。 The only thing that really bothers me is the main character's self-invented religion, Quantumology。 It is basically The Secret on steroids。 It is reiterated over and over that this character is expressing hope and optimism, but I am not sure I agree。 Blaming others for their misfortune because they thought negatively isn't hopeful。 Tha Another graphic novel series with fantastic art and a unique setting。 There's elements here of Metabarons, Sunshine, and Pacific Rim。 Maybe even a little Mad Max。 The only thing that really bothers me is the main character's self-invented religion, Quantumology。 It is basically The Secret on steroids。 It is reiterated over and over that this character is expressing hope and optimism, but I am not sure I agree。 Blaming others for their misfortune because they thought negatively isn't hopeful。 That's not how quantum physics works。 。。。more
