Nobody knows。 Where he had come from? Nobody knows。 How he was made? The Iron Man walks towards a cliff edge, only to step and fall onto the rocks below and break into several pieces。 Despite this fall, the Iron Man returns。 Hogarth returns to his village to warn people of the dangerous Iron Man。 The Iron Man begins to terror the village, eating metal farmyard equipment。 There is a plan to lure the Iron Man into an underground trap, however, he can escape, and a deal is made that he may eat the scrap metal from the tip。 Later, when a ‘Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon’ appears, it is Hogarth that encourages the Iron Man to fight it。 Later it is revealed that the creature a peaceful ‘Star Spirit’ who sings music that produces universal harmony and peace。 Hearing this, the Iron Man asks it to sing to the people of the village。 The song lulls the people into harmony between man, nature, and culture。Hughes makes the choice to describe the Iron Man as a sentient being who has little regard for anyone or anything, outside of their want to eat metal。 While this creates drama for the readers, the reactions of the adults and children in the story are equally if not more interesting and engaging。 The adults focus is the destruction and forgetting the Iron Man, this is unsuccessful as the Iron Man returns。 It is the child in the story who is responsible for humanising the Iron Man, understanding the motives of the machine, and creating a solution that benefits not only the village, but also the Iron Man。 This choice is echoed in the discussions between the Iron Man and the ‘Star Spirit’, further demonstrating the importance of tolerance and understanding and how children are equipped with the tools to implement them, potentially even more so than adults。This view is also demonstrated earlier in the story, when Hogarth tells the grown-ups that there is an Iron Man on the loose。 Rather than dismissing him, adults very well may in a child’s home life, they take his warning seriously。 Both of these examples thrill and empower young readers, they are able to read an example of a child positively contributing to a community and being respected and valued and by adults within it。 The story has thrived against the test of time, the robotic Iron Man character and the stories core themes of tolerance, understanding and peace are just as valuable and engaging as when it was first published。 。。。more

This is a really cute children’s book, which was the basis of one of the most heartbreaking films of my childhood, and I’m so glad that I was able to read it finally! The Iron Man and his battle of wits against the space-bat-angel-dragon is such a wonderful ending to the story, and the idea that something as strange and unusual as the Iron Man had created peace on Earth is such a fun concept。 I might need to go back and watch the film again。

Simple, quirky and effective。 Absolutely loved this short read, and has infinite possibilities for primary English teaching stimuli!

a classic primary school book i read in year 3。 i think this book deserves more recognition and i really like it overall。 :)

Read aloud for 5yo boy。 Only the bones of the story relate to the movie (Names, the sea, general first reaction to the giant), everything else is different。 It was a modern fairy tale & I enjoyed the poetic elements。 Honestly still love the movie more though

Very very different to the movie。 Ted Hughes is a super interesting guy, his relationship with Sylvia plath is a whacky thing and I think his more serious works reflect a deeper meaning in his writing。 This is a children's book and it does what it sets out to do so I can't fault it。 Will need to watch the movie again soon。 Very very different to the movie。 Ted Hughes is a super interesting guy, his relationship with Sylvia plath is a whacky thing and I think his more serious works reflect a deeper meaning in his writing。 This is a children's book and it does what it sets out to do so I can't fault it。 Will need to watch the movie again soon。 。。。more

All right! And he set off。 With slow giant wingbeats, he lifted his immense body off the earth, and flew slowly up towards the sun, while the whole earth watched …Slowly he covered the distance, getting smaller and smaller as he went。 At last he landed, a ragged black shape sprawled across the sun。 Everybody watched。 And now they saw the monster begin to glow。 Blue at first, then red, then orange。 Finally his shape was invisible, the same blazing white as the sun itself。 The monster was white-hot on the sun。It was kind of a mixed bag。 。。。more

Great short story that had a film adaptation that expanded upon the metaphors of the source material。 Where there were some similarities, majority of the story had drastic differences that were simple to comprehend。 Overall, solid introduction, great middle that was on par with the quality of the movie, and outstanding finale in terms of using the dragon as a metaphor for war and the essentials of working towards peace otherwise mutual destruction would occur。

I didn't know of "The Iron Giant" book until after watching the movie in 1999。 It was first published in 1968! I could have read it as a child。 It's great。 I didn't know of "The Iron Giant" book until after watching the movie in 1999。 It was first published in 1968! Okay, it's been a long time since I read this but I can remember not liking it at all as a kid。 I think it's a good example of a specific kind of children's book; ones that adults like/think of as somehow 'worthy' but children get bored by。 Okay, it's been a long time since I read this but I can remember not liking it at all as a kid。 I think it's a good example of a specific kind of children's book; ones that adults like/think of as somehow 'worthy' but children get bored by。 。。。more

It's not often that I prefer a movie adaptation of a book, but The Iron Giant (1999) takes this story and flips it on its head in the best way。 I already knew that the book and the movie followed different storylines, so I tried to view the book as separate to the movie。 Even so, I was disappointed。 I think that, even as a child, I wouldn't have had much love for the book, partly because it's devoid of emotion。 There are some humorous moments, but it almost feels like the author wasn't intereste It's not often that I prefer a movie adaptation of a book, but The Iron Giant (1999) takes this story and flips it on its head in the best way。 I already knew that the book and the movie followed different storylines, so I tried to view the book as separate to the movie。 Even so, I was disappointed。 I think that, even as a child, I wouldn't have had much love for the book, partly because it's devoid of emotion。 There are some humorous moments, but it almost feels like the author wasn't interested in writing it。 A bit of a meh for me。 。。。more

I am in my dwelling in British literature by a second chance to read children classics with my kids。 The Iron Man is a fantastic story to understand fear of not knowing each other, negotiation and peace。 Written in 1960s, as the Cold War was hot, the author invited us to live together without biases。 Being the best of all poets, Ted Hughes had an eloquent writing gripping us into the story。

Jamie MacDonald Jones

A succinct little parable, easily enjoyed。

For ks2Chapter one- lots of opportunities for questioning, onomatopoeia。Each chapter is a mini story on its own。 What happened in between。 Build iron man etc。

Just re-read this to the children in my class。 It was always a book that stuck with me from when we looked at when I was in school aged about 8。 Revisiting it made me realise that there was a reason why I only remembered the first chapter and that’s because it’s the most interesting part of the story。 It’s a wonderful opening but after that I just find myself getting bored。 Was lovely to see how much that children enjoyed it。 I think they would rate it higher than myself。

A robotic life form causes havoc for a farming community by eating all their metal。 Seeking ways to destroy the Iron Man, it is pure luck that it is still there when an alien dragon threatens to enslave the Earth, as the Iron Man may prove their salvation。Part narrative poem, part fabulous fairy tale, 'The Iron Man' is rightly seen as a masterwork of Ted Hughes。 A robotic life form causes havoc for a farming community by eating all their metal。 Seeking ways to destroy the Iron Man, it is pure luck that it is still there when an alien dragon threatens to enslave the Earth, as the Iron Man may prove their salvation。Part narrative poem, part fabulous fairy tale, 'The Iron Man' is rightly seen as a masterwork of Ted Hughes。 。。。more
