Summary

East Yorkshire: Single mum Alice Lake finds a man on the beach outside her house。 He has no name, no jacket, no idea what he is doing there。 Against her better judgement she invites him in to her home。

Surrey: Twenty-one-year-old Lily Monrose has only been married for three weeks。 When her new husband fails to come home from work one night she is left stranded in a new country where she knows no one。 Then the police tell her that her husband never existed。

This was。。。a book。 The story became predictable at about 40% into the audiobook。 The characters were a bit one dimensional and had questionable motives or rationales。 I mean, I was irked at the choices some of these characters made to the point it took me out of the story。 But, as with the other Lisa Jewel novel I read - And Then She Was Gone - it was a time killing book。 Something to pay attention to at times and then just listen to the blathering in between important moments。

I read this book within a single day and devoured Lisa Jewell’s words。 She’s becoming one of my favorite mystery writers。 I didn’t like this one as much the “The Family Upstairs” but still enjoy his multiple story lines that she intricately weaves together。

This was a very intriguing book。 It started kind of slow, as the current and back stories were being set。 But, then it really took off and I could not out it down。

Great bedtime listening。

At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book because it was a little too slow-paced for me, but as I kept reading it just got better and better。 The last quarter of the book was fast paced and I could not put the book down。 I love how this book was character driven and liked the complex characters that changed more as the story unwinded。 The book was told in 3 stories (Lily, Alice, and Grahams) and I like how it also went back 23 years prior。 The plot was great, and I liked how she ha At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book because it was a little too slow-paced for me, but as I kept reading it just got better and better。 The last quarter of the book was fast paced and I could not put the book down。 I love how this book was character driven and liked the complex characters that changed more as the story unwinded。 The book was told in 3 stories (Lily, Alice, and Grahams) and I like how it also went back 23 years prior。 The plot was great, and I liked how she had the story unfolded and the 3 characters Lily, Alice and Graham stories became one。 。。。more

This book definitely handled some tough topics (ooof), but was so well-written。 A great slow-burn, character-driven mystery。

Slower read than other Jewell books, until the last half of the book。

It was quite difficult to begin with and I took quite a while to get into it but once I did I really couldn’t put it down。 A fantastic story with very relatable characters。

Gripping and engaging from the start。 I really enjoyed it, but I did need to put it down for a few days when a section was a little too much for me to mentally process。 Tw: rape, physical abuse

Suspenseful and page-turner。

This is my second Lisa Jewell book; I’m happy I found this author。 No, it wasn’t Then She Was Gone, it was The Family Upstairs。 I like her mystery/suspense books set in Britain。 This book had several narrators telling their parts。 There’s the newlywed Lily whose husband is missing。 Then there’s Alice, who finds a mysterious man with amnesia at the beach。 Lastly, we hear Grey’s story, set in the past。 Of course they all come together in a crafty way。 Is the book realistic? Not always! I could not relate to the main character as a mom。 Sorry, not sorry。 I may have found the story intriguing if the voices of reason weren’t coming from children to a mom。 What the heck? Some may see this as escape, but I just can’t。

I enjoyed this as an audiobook - it was far fetched but fun and I found myself wanting to know more about the characters and what was going to happen。

This book was so amazing!!!

Jill

Pretty creepy and rather freaky! Suspenseful once you get most of the characters lined out。 Well written and guides the reader easily。

WOW, it was such an adicttive book that I couldnt put it down。 The intials scenes where the rainy season and beach and yellow lit cottage is the best。 The tragedy, the misery is mind boggling。 I liked it。

Good story, but there’s some language

3。5 stars, rounded up because I generally enjoy Lisa Jewell。Good premise and I found the characters realistic/flawed but still likeable。 It was just the ending with Frank/Gray/Graham's memory loss that came off soapy/melodramatic to me。 3。5 stars, rounded up because I generally enjoy Lisa Jewell。Good premise and I found the characters realistic/flawed but still likeable。 It was just the ending with Frank/Gray/Graham's memory loss that came off soapy/melodramatic to me。 。。。more

Really enjoyed the twists and turns of this story。 It has an unexpected ending and I loved that。

As always I enjoy the author’s writing。 I was kept guessing for most of the story and I really enjoyed that。 Only issue with taking a star back was that I won’t miss any of the characters。

80% of the book I was just trying to figure out who everyone was。 The last 20% I was just saying "no friggin way"。 Really thought the ending would go a different way。 Disappointed that it didn't。Alice made some laughably terrible choices and had no development。 Lily too。 The only character I enjoyed was Graham。 No。 Frank。 No Gray? Argh。Not my favorite by this author。 80% of the book I was just trying to figure out who everyone was。 The last 20% I was just saying "no friggin way"。 Really thought the ending would go a different way。 Disappointed that it didn't。Alice made some laughably terrible choices and had no development。 Lily too。 The only character I enjoyed was Graham。 No。 Frank。 No Gray? This book has one of the most bizarre and unlikely plot lines that I've ever read and after a while I gave up puzzling over them and decided just to go with the flow。 Because actually I don't think the plot much matters - it's the characters that are the real draw for me and I just loved reading about their development across the scope of the novel。I absolutely LOVED Lily, the abandoned wife - she was a brilliant and very strong character。 I would have loved to have a lot more of her story in th This book has one of the most bizarre and unlikely plot lines that I've ever read and after a while I gave up puzzling over them and decided just to go with the flow。 Because actually I don't think the plot much matters - it's the characters that are the real draw for me and I just loved reading about their development across the scope of the novel。I absolutely LOVED Lily, the abandoned wife - she was a brilliant and very strong character。 I would have loved to have a lot more of her story in this。 On the other hand, I found Alice, the woman who finds a man on a beach with no memory, rather irritating and (dare I say it?) more than a tad unbelievable。 I also have a feeling that it would have been better to omit the chapters that focus on the point of view of Frank, the man found on the beach, and instead have the entire story narrated by the women。That said, and however bizarre the plot gets, the way the characters slowly come together and how the truth is revealed is very gripping indeed, and I thought the ending - for all characters - was pretty near perfect。 。。。more

Audiobook - a great read

Sandy

Story of a man found sitting on his haunches by the sea in the rain。 A woman named Alice takes him in; like she does with so many other strays。 In a weeks time both of their lives will be changed forever。

I actually loved it and hardly put it down! It was simple and alluring, with a great selection of characters that each had their own little quirks and a darkness that I greatly enjoyed。 An enjoyable quick and simple page turner, perfect for those inbetween big reads!

Ok, but despite that, I liked Lily and she made me so proud that she called the police to share everything she had just learned about her husband。 I'm glad things ended well for her at the end。3。 I was split in guessing if Frank was Gray or Mark。 So much pointed in both directions and I wasn't sure。 Later on I was more inclined to believe he was Mark and, even after he remembered about his sister and that terrible night, I still wasn't sure the author wasn't playing a trick。 She wasn't, Frank was Gray and he had a sad life because of what Mark did on that awful night。 I'm happy that he and Alice are finding their way to each other。4。 It was a bit disappointing that, suddenly, we know the police caught Mark in Scotland but, I, we readers, didn't see it happening。 I expected something more dramatic in getting Mark。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more
