This book is very long, but it is worth reading。

I think I was 11 when I first read this series。 I may have been 10--but I faithfully re-read the series until I was about 15 and was moved into the adult section of the library。 I tried reading The Fellowship of the Ring which I was assured was similar to this tale but I hated the LOTR--it's entirely too wordy and pompous。 I've never gotten through the first book, or even The Hobbit, or There and Back Again。 This series, though, lived on in my memories。I remember being disappointed in Disney's B I think I was 11 when I first read this series。 I may have been 10--but I faithfully re-read the series until I was about 15 and was moved into the adult section of the library。 I tried reading The Fellowship of the Ring which I was assured was similar to this tale but I hated the LOTR--it's entirely too wordy and pompous。 I've never gotten through the first book, or even The Hobbit, or There and Back Again。 This series, though, lived on in my memories。I remember being disappointed in Disney's Black Cauldron。 It couldn't live up to my dreams/memories。This year, for some strange reason, I decided to re-read the Chronicles。 I haven't read it for over three decades but it lived up to everything I remember。 I was swept away。 Gurgi is still my favorite。 There's a lot I didn't remember but it felt like home。I'm bringing the series to my classroom。 Maybe one of my students next year will fall in love with Prydain like I did when I was 11。 。。。more

I can't believe that this series escaped my knowledge for so long。 I loved the world building, the powerful clash of light and darkness, and perhaps most of all, the ordinariness of the hero。 Truly great, classic fantasy series。 I can't believe that this series escaped my knowledge for so long。 I loved the world building, the powerful clash of light and darkness, and perhaps most of all, the ordinariness of the hero。 Truly great, classic fantasy series。 。。。more

An absolutely lovely series, and each is progressively better than the one before it。 If the world were more just, more people would have read these, and it would be blessed with popularity akin to The Lord of the Rings。

Repurchase of a beloved series from childhood; extra star for that status。 Aged okay, considering。

As a youngster in Grade 4 and 5 in the early 80’s, my initiation into the world of fantasy was whet by the likes of The Wizard of Oz series, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Chronicles of Prydain。 The first two series I read courtesy of my school library but Prydain was purchased with my own hard earned allowance money one book, one month at a time through a school book buying program who’s name escapes me。 Up until last year I still owned the original copies though they were read to tatters the As a youngster in Grade 4 and 5 in the early 80’s, my initiation into the world of fantasy was whet by the likes of The Wizard of Oz series, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Chronicles of Prydain。 The first two series I read courtesy of my school library but Prydain was purchased with my own hard earned allowance money one book, one month at a time through a school book buying program who’s name escapes me。 Up until last year I still owned the original copies though they were read to tatters they held a special place on my shelf and in my heart。 Though I am hard pressed to remember the characters and plot of Oz (other than the easy movie recall) as well as that of Narnia, the world and people of Prydain are never far from my heart。 This series more than any other I’ve consumed lit a fire and passion for great fantasy and fiction that has burned brightly ever since, all else since has been weighed against this beautiful and enthralling story。 If you are even remotely a fan of fantasy, do yourself a favour and delve into this masterpiece。 。。。more

An exciting blend of realism and fantasy in the children's genre which I read at the time of Community College。 Better than the Disney film by far。 Books 4 and 5 held my attention particularly。 These are perfect stories for tweeners or adolescents beginning their first voyage into fantasy literature。 Roughly at the same reading level as the Chronicles of Narnia。 A good prerequisite before tackling The Lord of the Rings。 An exciting blend of realism and fantasy in the children's genre which I read at the time of Community College。 Better than the Disney film by far。 Books 4 and 5 held my attention particularly。 These are perfect stories for tweeners or adolescents beginning their first voyage into fantasy literature。 Roughly at the same reading level as the Chronicles of Narnia。 A good prerequisite before tackling The Lord of the Rings。 。。。more

Re-read this for the first time since childhood and I couldn’t be more pleased with it。 Truly among the finest works of high fantasy in the English language。

This is, I think, my all time favorite series from childhood。 Great characters, engaging plot, exciting world building!! The only thing I find myself somewhat disappointed by while rereading them in adulthood is the lack of female characters。 The few in the books are GREAT, don’t get me wrong, but I want more because I’m GREEDY!!! Genuinely, tho, if you need a quick and excellent fantasy series, this one is top tier。

These novels, these stories, reimagined out of Welsh mythology, still hold up。 Yes, I can see issues with gender。 But this re-reading was worth my time。 I liked reading all five books as one story: the growing up and coming of age of Taran and Eilonwy, their love story, the seductive power of evil, Taran's search for self。 That was well done。 There are bonus stories at the end, too, which add depth to the history of Prydain。 These novels, these stories, reimagined out of Welsh mythology, still hold up。 Yes, I can see issues with gender。 But this re-reading was worth my time。 I liked reading all five books as one story: the growing up and coming of age of Taran and Eilonwy, their love story, the seductive power of evil, Taran's search for self。 That was well done。 There are bonus stories at the end, too, which add depth to the history of Prydain。 。。。more

Based on Welsh lore, all the best aspects of high fantasy are included in this classic series, except there is a tongue-in-cheek aspect that makes it more endearing than the more canon classics。 The lead character, Taran, is an assistant pig keeper who dreams of greatness, but is apprenticed to a sorcerer who naps all day。 In his quest to track down his missing oracular pig (yes, that's a thing), he is joined by a strange creature named Gurgi, who is always hungry (we never actually figure out w Based on Welsh lore, all the best aspects of high fantasy are included in this classic series, except there is a tongue-in-cheek aspect that makes it more endearing than the more canon classics。 The lead character, Taran, is an assistant pig keeper who dreams of greatness, but is apprenticed to a sorcerer who naps all day。 In his quest to track down his missing oracular pig (yes, that's a thing), he is joined by a strange creature named Gurgi, who is always hungry (we never actually figure out what Gurgi is, but think of a rather unattractive wookie), a young spitfire enchantress-in-training, and a bard with a tendency for tall tales (whose day job is being a king)。 But aside from the unexpected humor, there is also a lot of heart and profound truth embedded in this series, which plays out over all 5 books through Taran's additional quest—that of self-discovery。 I read this series when I was a kid and loved it, read it to my kids when they were pretty young, and they loved it so much that they demanded that we read it together again a couple years later。 The one unfortunate thing I've found is that some of the older covers, especially for the Book of Three, are not appealing to today's young readers and I know several kids who won't give this series a chance due to that cover。 While you can no longer buy my 50th anniversary hard covers pictured here, the 50th anniversary soft covers are still for sale and are quite quite lovely。 。。。more

Very good classic fantasy, in the vein of Tokien and Lewis, inspired by Welsh mythology。 I would even enjoy it even more if i had read it as a child, before reading all these other fantasy books, but still it was a good read。

I loved these books when I was a kid。 Would like to read them again some day。

As a child I enjoyed them as much as LOTR。 Albeit much shorter and simpler。

Missed out on these stories as a child and so got to experience them in middle age instead。 I liked the mixture of the coming of age mixed with Welsh mythology; for fans of the Chronicles of Narnia who don’t wish for the religious overtones。

Everybody read this in elementary school。。。 but I never did。 I'm not sure why。 But last month I rediscovered this series when my nephew was reading book 1。。。 and found the whole series at my local library。 It was a delightful reading experience, partly because I read most of it with a fire in the wood stove and a glass of wine over the course of a few evenings when it was subzero outside in Wyoming。 The books also got much better throughout。 The first, "The Book of Three" was very cartoon-ish - Everybody read this in elementary school。。。 but I never did。 I'm not sure why。 But last month I rediscovered this series when my nephew was reading book 1。。。 and found the whole series at my local library。 It was a delightful reading experience, partly because I read most of it with a fire in the wood stove and a glass of wine over the course of a few evenings when it was subzero outside in Wyoming。 The books also got much better throughout。 The first, "The Book of Three" was very cartoon-ish - every time our hero got into trouble he passed out and when he woke up all was solved。 (Is that a deus ex machina? or some other Latin phrase?) But the subsequent books became "realer," deeper, and more engaging。 By the end of the last book, I found myself crying at the parting of the Companions。 There was some real wisdom in these books, useful to kids of all ages。 。。。more

It was a really awesome and super well written children’s fantasy bookset。 It had really cool illustrations, really great characters, really awesome action, really great magic, really thrilling adventure, really excellent humor and a really astonishing storylines。 This is going to be one of my favorite children’s fantasy book series I’ve ever read in my whole life。 I highly recommend this box set to both kids and adults。

This book was fun because Taran went to a lot of places and found the pig。 I also liked when they fought against the evil people because there was a lot of fun things happening during the fights。

So I tried to give it a shot and skimmed some。Am I the only one who cannot imagine a kid talking in high medieval prose ?I feel like this way of talking is something you work up to, not start out with。
