Summary

In 2008, In the Heights, a new musical from up-and-coming young artists, electrified Broadway。 The show’s vibrant mix of Latin music and hip-hop captured life in Washington Heights, the Latino neighborhood in upper Manhattan。 It won four Tony Awards and became an international hit, delighting audiences around the world。 For the film version, director Jon M。 Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) brought the story home, filming its spectacular dance numbers on location in Washington Heights。 That’s where Usnavi, Nina, and their neighbors chase their dreams and ask a universal question: Where do I belong?

In the Heights: Finding Home reunites Miranda with Jeremy McCarter, co-author of Hamilton: The Revolution, and Quiara Alegría Hudes, the Pulitzer Prize–winning librettist of the Broadway musical and screenwriter of the film。 They do more than trace the making of an unlikely Broadway smash and a major motion picture: They give readers an intimate look at the decades-long creative life of In the Heights。

Like Hamilton: The Revolution, the book offers untold stories, perceptive essays, and the lyrics to Miranda’s songs—complete with his funny, heartfelt annotations。 It also features newly commissioned portraits and never-before-seen photos from backstage, the movie set, and productions around the world。

This is the story of characters who search for a home—and the artists who created one。

As expected, this serves as a perfect companion piece to the hamiltome (aka Hamilton: The Revolution, though if you need to be told that this probably isn't the book for you)。 I guess we're calling this one the bodega bible? Look, I was always going to love this。 Heights is the reason I was interested in Hamilton before it was HAMILTON。 I was honestly looking forward to this book as much if not more than the movie。 And given my annoyance with several of the changes made between stage and screen (#justiceforcamilarosario, why are we rewriting character backstories/cutting essential songs, and do NOT get me started on that ending), I am THRILLED that it follows the trajectory of In The Heights from its beginnings as a college project in chronological order。 It covers ALL the songs and characters from the (superior) stage version as well as the differences in the movie。 I paired the book with the audio version, which is perfectly narrated by America Ferrera。 The three authors also lend their voices periodically (as does LMM's wife Vanessa for a brief observation)。 What more is there to say? (Except see this on stage if you possibly can。) Five shining stars。 。。。more

I have long been a fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegria Hudes’s In the Heights。 While I acknowledge the genius of Miranda’s Hamilton, I like In the Heights so much better。 And thus, I eagerly awaited the release of the film version of the show, delayed a year because of the pandemic。 This book, timed to release with the movie, In the Heights: Finding Home, by Miranda, Hudes, and Jeremy McCarter, is a treasure。 It chronicles the creation of the show and then goes on to detail the filming I have long been a fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegria Hudes’s In the Heights。 While I acknowledge the genius of Miranda’s Hamilton, I like In the Heights so much better。 And thus, I eagerly awaited the release of the film version of the show, delayed a year because of the pandemic。 This book, timed to release with the movie, In the Heights: Finding Home, by Miranda, Hudes, and Jeremy McCarter, is a treasure。 It chronicles the creation of the show and then goes on to detail the filming of the movie。 Any way you read it, it is remarkable, but I detail my method: First, since the book is filled with all the lyrics of the show’s songs, I read the lyrics as I listened to the Broadway cast recording。 Then I went back and read Lin’s side notes on the lyrics, bits of information that enlighten and entertain。 In the notes, we see what he was thinking when he wrote the lyrics, how he felt at the time, his observations of performers who have sung them, how the lyrics were used in the film, and friendships that were formed over those very words。 Next, I read the actual text of the book, and along with that, the recuerdos, memories from creators and cast members。 The text is rich and organized song by song, tied to the message of each song。 We go on the magnificent journey of a young nineteen-year old Puerto Rican immigrant, steeped in traditional musical theater and contemporary hip-hop, as he begins a creation that blossoms from a single idea to a world-wide hit。 The “intermission” of the book tells of the Tony Awards night when the show was validated by the Broadway community。 And then the “second act” is the fight from selling the show to filmmakers, to the casting, and on to the creation of the movie。 The book was to end with a description of a joyful premiere, but Covid-19 got in the way。 And thus, the book poignantly ends with how those involved—and all of us—have dealt with a pandemic that shut the world down and, indeed, devastated so many lives。 The new song Lin wrote for the ending credit of the film called Home All Summer is a fitting end to the book and a fitting soundtrack to our lives。 Anyone who loves this show, loves Broadway, or sees the film will revel in this book! 。。。more

Everything LMM creates turns out golden, this book is no exception。 If you loved Hamilton: the Revolution then you will adore this book。 This tells of where Lin started and how he ended up where he is today。 AGH I cannot recommend it highly enough I’d give it 500/5 if I could。

Another lovely & fun companion piece to another amazing Lin-Manuel Miranda musical。 I cried while watching the movie & cried while reading this book。 The stories of how the stage show & movie came together definitely reinforce the theme of family & community。 Would love to see a professional stage production of the show someday, but until then, I’ll find joy & contentment in this book, the soundtracks (yes, plural。 Will continue listening to the Broadway & movie soundtracks as there are differen Another lovely & fun companion piece to another amazing Lin-Manuel Miranda musical。 I cried while watching the movie & cried while reading this book。 The stories of how the stage show & movie came together definitely reinforce the theme of family & community。 Would love to see a professional stage production of the show someday, but until then, I’ll find joy & contentment in this book, the soundtracks (yes, plural。 Will continue listening to the Broadway & movie soundtracks as there are different songs & amazing singers in both) & re-watching the movie again & again (with this book open to learn the lyrics)。 And as with the Hamilton companion book, a bonus to all the behind-the-scene collaboration stories are Lin’s lyric annotations。 The small insights into his lyric & music choices are worth it in & of themselves。 。。。more

I started this as soon as I picked it up from my mailbox when I got off work and barely put it down long enough to make and eat dinner… I haven’t read through a book in a single sitting in ages。 And now I can’t wait to listen to the audiobook version!

Reading this book made my love for both the musical and movie versions of In The Heights grow even more。 It’s fantastic, well put together, and draws a beautiful narrative interspersed with personal stories of members from ITH cast members。 I was also pleasantly surprised to find mention of the Pasadena early screenings, one of which I actually attended pre-Covid (the NDA finally lapsed so I can say that)! On a personal level, it touched me deeply to technically be included because I was an audience member who got to give notes on the movie that did affect the final version that’s now available on HBO Max and in theaters。 If you see the movie or saw the musical, I highly recommend reading this book for the extra insights you’ll get on the whole process of making In The Heights。 。。。more
