Summary

Aphra Behn, first female professional writer。 Sojourner Truth, activist and abolitionist。 Ada Lovelace, first computer programmer。 Marie Curie, first woman to win the Nobel Prize。 Joan Jett, godmother of punk。 The 100 revolutionary women highlighted in this gorgeously illustrated book were bad in the best sense of the word: they challenged the status quo and changed the rules for all who followed。 From pirates to artists, warriors, daredevils, scientists, activists, and spies, the accomplishments of these incredible women vary as much as the eras and places in which they effected change。 Featuring bold watercolor portraits and illuminating essays by Ann Shen, Bad Girls Throughout History is a distinctive, gift-worthy tribute。

It's the good girls who keep diaries, the bad girls never have the time。 Oh, I loved this! The illustrations were absolutely stunning and there were quite a few women I've never heard of。 I feel like I learned quite a lot and there were multiple persons I googled in order to find out more about them。 I think that the book could have been more diverse though。 It's the good girls who keep diaries, the bad girls never have the time。 Oh, I loved this! The illustrations were absolutely stunning and there were quite a few women I've never heard of。 I feel like I learned quite a lot and there were multiple persons I googled in order to find out more about them。 I think that the book could have been more diverse though。 。。。more

Really interesting and fascinating book about a plethora of women from those very well-known to those lesser known, but equally as captivating。 It's a book that you can read at once or pick up and put down at your leisure with no break in continuity。 This would make a fun gift! I love little books like this - each subject gets at most a few pages, you learn something, you can pick it up and put it down without losing the train of the story, since there is no story。 And in this book you learn about 100 amazing people who happen to be women。 Certainly these capsule bios are awfully light, but maybe you'll be prompted to look for more complete biographies。Along the same lines as this type of book, I highly recommend "Atlas of Remote Islands" by Judith Schalansky, a sure d I love little books like this - each subject gets at most a few pages, you learn something, you can pick it up and put it down without losing the train of the story, since there is no story。 And in this book you learn about 100 amazing people who happen to be women。 Certainly these capsule bios are awfully light, but maybe you'll be prompted to look for more complete biographies。Along the same lines as this type of book, I highly recommend "Atlas of Remote Islands" by Judith Schalansky, a sure delight for any geographer。 。。。more

I never realized how many famous women I had heard of, who hadn't begun writing/pursuing their goals/finding their path until their 30s and 40s - I suddenly felt like everything up until now, while I was figuring out my passion - wasn't wasted time at all。 I never realized how many famous women I had heard of, who hadn't begun writing/pursuing their goals/finding their path until their 30s and 40s - I suddenly felt like everything up until now, while I was figuring out my passion - wasn't wasted time at all。 。。。more

This exceptional book is about 100 incredible women throughout the history who acted as a pathway for the female to gain their rights, live freely and boldly with pride。Helen Gurley Brown said,“the way to get what you want out of life is not through a man but through your career; set your mind to something, and work really hard to get it。 Oh, and you should definitely have a lot of fun on the way up—and not wait for marriage to bring you that happy ending。”I really hate when men pretend that th This exceptional book is about 100 incredible women throughout the history who acted as a pathway for the female to gain their rights, live freely and boldly with pride。Helen Gurley Brown said,“the way to get what you want out of life is not through a man but through your career; set your mind to something, and work really hard to get it。 Oh, and you should definitely have a lot of fun on the way up—and not wait for marriage to bring you that happy ending。”I really hate when men pretend that they are stronger than women。A women goes throw the pain of breaking 260 bones while giving birth。And studies show that menstrual pain hurts as much as having a heart attack 。This study was conducted by Professor John Guillebaud (UCL Institute for Women's Health)。Strength, power, courage and endurance has nothing to do with sexuality。A person acquires them through mentality and work。Stop misogynism and sexism。Marlene Sanders’s mom said,“boys don’t like girls who are too smart”Some will not agree with me but I have experienced it in my real life。 I am not a feminist。I am more like an equalist。We are all human beings and men and women are the same。Then why some men suppress women?Men are called SIMPS and UNMANLY by his peer group when he treats a women the right way。Change your thinking because the mother who gave birth to you and raised you is also a female。Ruth Bader Ginsburg said,“Better bitch than mouse”I have been waiting for this book for a long time。The illustrations are gorgeous and the story of each Power Women is just fabulous。Loved this book💕 。。。more

I think I rated it so high the first time because I was excited that this book even existed。 Taking my time with it for this read, I was very bothered by the poorly done illustrations that seemed more like bad caricatures portraying everyone much lighter than they are/were - even those who were pretty light to begin with! I also would have preferred a clearer distinction between facts and fable in the biographies of these women。 I understand that for some of these women all we have is myth and legend (Lilith for example) but in the case of someone like Cleopatra where fact and legend mix, I would've preferred a more clear distinction between the two。 I don't believe it benefits the reader to have them mixed together with no clarification。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this。 Their were a good combination story's of well known women and story's about women who history has forgotten。 The illustrations were really great。 4/5 stars。 I really enjoyed this。 Their were a good combination story's of well known women and story's about women who history has forgotten。 The illustrations were really great。 4/5 stars。 。。。more

This was a solid book with beautiful artwork。 My one issue was that it was primarily Western figures - it did include a few who weren’t, but not nearly enough in my opinion。 I personally preferred the graphic novel “Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World。” Still a great read on some incredible women。

Barry

An interesting idea but the scholarship could be better and the writing was oddly breathless in parts

I absolutely love this book! Not only was it helpful for my own job to present when it came to women’s history month but as well the fact that there’s more than one page for the bibliography。 You know this author has done their research and the illustrations are beautiful work。

Kickass Women! One of the best books I’ve read in a while。 Each bio is to the point and well versed。 You’ll laugh and cry and pause on each sketch。 Definitely worth your time, thank you Ann Shen。

Some of the women in this book were truly trailblazing, remarkable women。 Others are being glorified for getting what they want no matter the cost。

Gorgeous illustrations, lushly printed on thick paper with a heavy hard cover。 Each short essay on an important woman is only one page, so it's a good introduction to each person。 There are one or two uses of profanity, so just FYI。 Gorgeous illustrations, lushly printed on thick paper with a heavy hard cover。 Each short essay on an important woman is only one page, so it's a good introduction to each person。 There are one or two uses of profanity, so just FYI。 。。。more

As is evident from the title this book is a collection of really short essays and sometimes even just a few lines on the legacies of women who were ground-breakers and leaders in their own ways and therefore considered to be “bad girls” by the societies of their times, for going against the norms。This book is however just a token read that barely skims the surface with regards to the featured women and is not a very persuasive collection。The stereotypically glammed up and delicate illustrations As is evident from the title this book is a collection of really short essays and sometimes even just a few lines on the legacies of women who were ground-breakers and leaders in their own ways and therefore considered to be “bad girls” by the societies of their times, for going against the norms。This book is however just a token read that barely skims the surface with regards to the featured women and is not a very persuasive collection。The stereotypically glammed up and delicate illustrations of women as per certain beauty standards didn’t really work for me。Wish it was a more diverse collection and not so white-washed。Also, what exactly was Lilith, a mythological figure doing in this anthology? Not a very enjoyable reading experience for me。⭐️⭐️✨ 。。。more

This was such a fun book to read for women’s history month。 100 women who inspired their countries and world, beginning chronologically with Lilith and ending with Malala Yousafzai。 Some I knew and other use were new to me。 I also appreciated that it included BIPOC women, as well as included the first publicly open trans woman。

I learned about some very interesting women! Though it did feel very U。S。-centric and there were some women included that don't seem to fit the "bad-girl" label。 Many of the women included were obvious women to cover。 I learned about some very interesting women! Really great illustrations and basic understandings of these amazing women。 Super easy to just go to a specific woman to find out their empowering story

I thought I would read this book in honor of Women’s history month。 I am not much into history but this book was SO interesting。 Short snippets of history from 100 women。 The art work was amazing and I learned so much!

Eh。 It’s a good collection of notable women I’ll want to research further, but the writing wasn’t particular interesting or compelling。 Eg: ‘Rosa Parks acted with courage in the wrong place at a bad time, and that turned out to be the perfect move at the right time’。 I’d call that poorly written。 That said, the illustrations were lovely。 Wouldn’t recommend book overall。

Somewhat superficial, but very easy to read and interesting names to look up。 A nice introduction to women who should be common names, tho clearly not an encyclopedia of flawless information。 I give 3 stars because I assume it was not the intention of the writer to create an encyclopedia, but I do feel like there is some unused potential with this book。

I really enjoyed this book! This was an entertaining as well as educational trip through history of trail-blazing women and there are well-known, as well as lesser known women highlighted here。 All of them are presented in bite-sized summaries that explain what they are known for, or accomplished in an easily digestible way that still delivers the importance of each woman's life and times。I knew of most of these women in some way, but I still learned facts about many that I did not know about the I really enjoyed this book! This was an entertaining as well as educational trip through history of trail-blazing women and there are well-known, as well as lesser known women highlighted here。 All of them are presented in bite-sized summaries that explain what they are known for, or accomplished in an easily digestible way that still delivers the importance of each woman's life and times。I knew of most of these women in some way, but I still learned facts about many that I did not know about them。 Because of the brevity of each chapter this is a very easy book to read while still educating and entertaining。 The author is a great writer and clearly enjoyed her subject matter here! This is a great "girl-power" book, and would be very inspiring for young women looking for role-models or trying to do things that are different than "the way we've always done it"。I enjoyed this immensely and would highly recommend it! 。。。more

I think of this book as an amuse-bouche for the women listed in its pages。 Bite size introductions to their accomplishments & impact that make you hungry to learn more about them。 Which is exactly what the authors intentions were so I think the book is a success。 In her own introduction the author bluntly states that this book was meant to to spark interest and be a starting point, especially for the women you may never have heard of。 I also enjoyed the illustration style which was the primary r I think of this book as an amuse-bouche for the women listed in its pages。 Bite size introductions to their accomplishments & impact that make you hungry to learn more about them。 Which is exactly what the authors intentions were so I think the book is a success。 In her own introduction the author bluntly states that this book was meant to to spark interest and be a starting point, especially for the women you may never have heard of。 I also enjoyed the illustration style which was the primary reason it caught my eye on the library shelf。The only reasons I went with a four instead of a five is: One, certain essays were far too short and I knew enough about some of the women already that I knew more information could have been included。 Two, it needed more diversity。 I don’t think it’s a fault of the author, more of an issue with western culture & history itself when it comes to looking for research sources。 。。。more
