Summary

Readers of all ages and walks of life have drawn inspiration and empowerment from Elizabeth Gilbert’s books for years。 Now this beloved author digs deep into her own generative process to share her wisdom and unique perspective about creativity。 With profound empathy and radiant generosity, she offers potent insights into the mysterious nature of inspiration。 She asks us to embrace our curiosity and let go of needless suffering。 She shows us how to tackle what we most love, and how to face down what we most fear。 She discusses the attitudes, approaches, and habits we need in order to live our most creative lives。 Balancing between soulful spirituality and cheerful pragmatism, Gilbert encourages us to uncover the “strange jewels” that are hidden within each of us。 Whether we are looking to write a book, make art, find new ways to address challenges in our work, embark on a dream long deferred, or simply infuse our everyday lives with more mindfulness and passion, Big Magic cracks open a world of wonder and joy。

This is an excellent book for anyone pursuing creative endeavors。 It is geared towards writers and is extremely helpful in showing us how to master the demons that hold us back。 A must for anyone in the creative world。

This is an oasis for confidence in creative thinking, when you get blocked in your creative life or feeling low, this book is a fuel stop to refill and start your journey again。

So much good here。 Truth and inspiration。 I found myself nodding at several parts that I already do - like switching up creativity when stuck on something else。 Best quote: Do you have the courage to write? To share the treasures within? The universe is hoping so。 Jack Gilbert (not related to the author)

Probably closer to 3。5 stars。 This is Gilbert's take on the creative process。 She has some good things to say but she also talks about some mystical big magic that is part of the process which didn't resonate with me。 Probably closer to 3。5 stars。 This is Gilbert's take on the creative process。 She has some good things to say but she also talks about some mystical big magic that is part of the process which didn't resonate with me。 。。。more

It took me 2 years to read this book - I would pick it up when I needed it and put it down when I felt like it had given me exactly the nugget of inspiration that I was looking for。 Elizabeth does such a spectacular job at balancing the heaviness and lightness of life & what it means (and doesn’t mean) to be a creative person。 It is a must read for anyone who is looking for big magic in their life!

3。5? I feel this book would rub a lot of people the wrong way。 The idea that inspiration and ideas are living organisms was a bit dismissive for me, but I did like the “get going on that idea” conversation behind it。 Personally I’ve read a lot of books on creativity that are actually helpful, but this book is nice and conversational if you have time。 There were a couple of pages I bookmarked, but it wasn’t the most helpful self help book I’ve ever read。 Would I read it again? Maybe。 But more for 3。5? This book is simply written but I found her ideas inspiring in a very practical way。 "Done is better than good。" I so agree with that。 And this: “You must learn how to become a deeply disciplined half-ass。” Yes, yes, yes! But my favorite quote was this one。 “Possessing a creative mind, after all, is something like having a border collie for a pet: It needs to work, or else it will cause you an outrageous amount of trouble。 Give your mind a job to do, or else it will find a job to do, and you mig This book is simply written but I found her ideas inspiring in a very practical way。 "Done is better than good。" I so agree with that。 And this: “You must learn how to become a deeply disciplined half-ass。” Yes, yes, yes! I both liked and disliked this book。 On the one hand, the book could have been simplified to a simple sentence: Quit fretting and just go do something you enjoy doing。 It was repetitive and boring and I felt like it was written by someone who likes the sound of their own voice and talking about themselves。 On the other hand, it was perfect。 The author is doing exactly what she is preaching to us to do and how could a sermon be any better or more beautiful than that? This is by far the best self help book out there and I am not really a self help book kind of person。 If you’re a creative or you’re looking to lead more of a creative life, I highly recommend reading this。 I agree with 95% of everything Gilbert says and the whole thing is just easy and playful to read。 Go get it now!!!

I appreciate Ms。 Gilbert's work; this one just didn't resonate with where I'm at right now。 I did get into the portion on Trust。 The concept of a piece of work or passion loving me back was incredibly thought provoking。 My work wouldn't be considered "creative" by most, however, it was still very relevant。 I thought the author took undue license projecting her concepts into some of the real life examples she borrowed from other people。 For example, I don't think they were necessarily cognizant t I appreciate Ms。 Gilbert's work; this one just didn't resonate with where I'm at right now。 I did get into the portion on Trust。 The concept of a piece of work or passion loving me back was incredibly thought provoking。 My work wouldn't be considered "creative" by most, however, it was still very relevant。 I thought the author took undue license projecting her concepts into some of the real life examples she borrowed from other people。 For example, I don't think they were necessarily cognizant that they were "trusting a process" when things weren't flourishing, as Ms。 Gilbert appears to assert。 Regardless, her main points still stand。 Had I picked up this book 2+ years ago, I probably would have gotten more out of it。 。。。more

Patience。 This was the theme with this book。 I initially picked up this book because one of my favorite creators recommended it in a podcast。 Now, this was my first time reading an Elizabeth Gilbert book so her way of dialogue was definitely new to me。 At first I was a little disappointed and annoyed by the fact that I felt the theme/lesson took so long to say for each new section。 That’s were the patience comes in。 Gilbert is a great story-teller but it takes patience。 Some of her stories were Patience。 This was the theme with this book。 I initially picked up this book because one of my favorite creators recommended it in a podcast。 Now, this was my first time reading an Elizabeth Gilbert book so her way of dialogue was definitely new to me。 At first I was a little disappointed and annoyed by the fact that I felt the theme/lesson took so long to say for each new section。 That’s were the patience comes in。 Gilbert is a great story-teller but it takes patience。 Some of her stories were nice and totally relatable but towards the middle it started to drag for me。 Don’t get me wrong, some amazing points were made by Gilbert and I was extremely grateful for them。 But it finally took until the last bit of the book that I was really enjoying it。 The points made towards the end were all the noteworthy ones for me。 I ended up giving this book 4/5 stars due to how great the end of the book was。 Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves hearing life stories or needs some encouragement to questions we all have as creators。 。。。more

"Big Magic:Creative Living beyond fear" by Elizabeth Gilbert is about how to live creatively。 It's more of a philosophy book than a how-to although there are definately some useful tips。 She's also of the mindset that inspiration is more outside oneself and it finds you。 It's an interesting take on it especially when she talks about different incidents such as her "losing" the inspiration for a particular type of book to realize that another author received the same inspiration (Ann Patchett)。 A "Big Magic:Creative Living beyond fear" by Elizabeth Gilbert is about how to live creatively。 It's more of a philosophy book than a how-to although there are definately some useful tips。 She's also of the mindset that inspiration is more outside oneself and it finds you。 It's an interesting take on it especially when she talks about different incidents such as her "losing" the inspiration for a particular type of book to realize that another author received the same inspiration (Ann Patchett)。 Also, how she uses one of the things author/scientist, Robin Wall Kimmerer (who wrote "Braiding Sweetgrass) teaches her students about how one can love nature but also realize it loves you back。 How it's not a one-sided affair。 All in all this is an thought provoking book that may point one in the right direction if they find themselves blocked creatively。 。。。more
