@doctorfusionbebop: Some 17 y。 o。 chick named Dee Guerrera was just sent to Alcatraz 2。0 for killing her stepsister。 So, how long do you think she'll last?

@morrisdavis72195: I hope she meets justice! She'll get what's coming to her! BWAHAHA!

@EltonJohnForevzz: Me? I think Dee's innocent。 And I hope she can survive。

WELCOME TO THE NEAR FUTURE, where good and honest citizens can enjoy watching the executions of society's most infamous convicted felons, streaming live on The Postman app from the suburbanized prison island Alcatraz 2。0。

the beginning read a little like a middle-grade with swears, but the plot was interesting enough that it was between a 3 and a 4, but it got much better as it went on, enough to get it up to a 4

Solid, albeit predictable, murder mystery

It read like an 80s horror and I cannot say I didnt enjoy it。 Don't go into this expecting character development and super intense plot。 Go in expecting an edge of your seat gore fest with some fun (however cliche admittedly) characters。 Despite the horror slasher feel I couldn't help but get major running man vibes (ironic considering one of the characters ethan quotes lots of action movies throughout this book) You will probably see where the book is going or there abouts but it was a fun page It read like an 80s horror and I cannot say I didnt enjoy it。 Don't go into this expecting character development and super intense plot。 Go in expecting an edge of your seat gore fest with some fun (however cliche admittedly) characters。 Despite the horror slasher feel I couldn't help but get major running man vibes (ironic considering one of the characters ethan quotes lots of action movies throughout this book) You will probably see where the book is going or there abouts but it was a fun page turner with plenty of actions and blood to keep you riveted until the end。 So much so I'll be reading the next installment as I'm curious as to how they will be able to keep this one going as it felt everything was wrapped up nicely。 。。。more

The first half was so hard to read, I honestly thought this was going to end up in the DNF pile but I decided to give it a couple more chapters to prove itself and it definitely did, just when I thought it was getting too bad it suddenly got super interesting。 It's a fast read and the ending is full of suspense。 It was overall good but not incredible, I would not read again nor put it on the list of potential recommendations but if you can put up with the first half I think it's an okay book。 The first half was so hard to read, I honestly thought this was going to end up in the DNF pile but I decided to give it a couple more chapters to prove itself and it definitely did, just when I thought it was getting too bad it suddenly got super interesting。 It's a fast read and the ending is full of suspense。 It was overall good but not incredible, I would not read again nor put it on the list of potential recommendations but if you can put up with the first half I think it's an okay book。 。。。more

You know what, I was all for hate-reading this book because the premise seemed so absurd… but it wasn’t really that bad? Probably more like 2,5 stars, really。 It was bad but also good in this, classic slashers way, sort of like Final Destination, where yeah, it’s gore, but it’s so over the top it’s actually funny。

I didn't finish this book。 There was nothing drawing me in or anything to actually hook me。 I got through 30 pages。 Cool concept, could be better。 I didn't finish this book。 There was nothing drawing me in or anything to actually hook me。 I got through 30 pages。 Cool concept, could be better。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book has a creative and hillarious plot line。 Super creative。 But it was just executed poorly。 You’re trying to tell me that a 14 year old and her father created a whole reality show and killed hundreds of innocent people just to get back a little girl they kidnapped? That is insane。 I did love the idea of the chat box pages though。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The premise was so perfect。 The book was, eh。 The first 200 pages had me hooked [especially the twitter like threads], but then it started to fall apart。 There were way too many serial killers to wait so late in the novel to address the majority of them。 Also serial killer don’t seem like the right term bc they were all so。。。 lame。 I’m not sure how Dee (other than the help she got from various sources) was the first to start killing them because they all seem to be bad at killing for the most pa The premise was so perfect。 The book was, eh。 The first 200 pages had me hooked [especially the twitter like threads], but then it started to fall apart。 There were way too many serial killers to wait so late in the novel to address the majority of them。 Also serial killer don’t seem like the right term bc they were all so。。。 lame。 I’m not sure how Dee (other than the help she got from various sources) was the first to start killing them because they all seem to be bad at killing for the most part。 I don’t know。。。 Kimmie conveniently leaving Dee exactly what she needed to kill each killer made things so predictable。 The movie references were fun, but having it overtake the identity of every killer just had things coming off as corny and beyond the realm of belief。 I’d love to read a novel that treated the summary of this one seriously, rather than this weird cartoony take。 Side note: the author continuously using quotation marks where someone would put air quotes for sarcasm was so distracting! Readers understand sarcasm when it’s well written, you don’t need to quote it every time。 。。。more

I lost interest in this。 Probably because the hold was so long that I kind of just lost interest。 I technically dnf’ed this but I do think that it was interesting and that people might like it。 Give it a try。 It just was too long and I lost interest。

If you like Hunger Games,Then you will likely enjoy this book。 It grabs your attention from the start, and it doesn’t let go。 Beware, though, it has lots of violence with fairly graphic details。

I mean, yeah, I see your bias but I got really invested so。。。。

This book has extremely graphic descriptions of horrific violence。 If you are at all sensitive to this kind of thing, do not read this book。

Note: dnf。 It wasn't the thriller I thought it would be。 I looked up the synopsis and it was pretty much what I thought。 Dee was also annoying。 On day 1 they told her to trust no one and she immediately trusted multiple people。 She seemed constantly naive to her situation despite being told why she shouldn't be。 I also don't understand how the show wasn't considered cruel and unusual punishment and a rights violation。 Interesting concept that didn't quite work for me。 Note: dnf。 It wasn't the thriller I thought it would be。 I looked up the synopsis and it was pretty much what I thought。 Dee was also annoying。 On day 1 they told her to trust no one and she immediately trusted multiple people。 She seemed constantly naive to her situation despite being told why she shouldn't be。 I also don't understand how the show wasn't considered cruel and unusual punishment and a rights violation。 Interesting concept that didn't quite work for me。 。。。more

This book was very strange somehow。 At times it feels quite real and then it’s so completely over the top - I wouldn’t know what genre this is supposed to be。 At times it felt very much like satire which is probably not what it is。 But still… the Killer’s names, the utterly crazy plot and especially the last couple of chapters were just whacky。 I could have done without the gory details and all the splatter but oh well。 All in all it was a quick and entertaining read, which was indeed what I was This book was very strange somehow。 At times it feels quite real and then it’s so completely over the top - I wouldn’t know what genre this is supposed to be。 At times it felt very much like satire which is probably not what it is。 But still… the Killer’s names, the utterly crazy plot and especially the last couple of chapters were just whacky。 I could have done without the gory details and all the splatter but oh well。 All in all it was a quick and entertaining read, which was indeed what I was looking for。 。。。more

There were elements of this book that could have worked, but in the end the international platform of Alcatraz 2。0 was too big for what was ultimately a very small villain payoff。 Also I absolutely cannot get behind the "quirky" psycho killers on the island and their gimmicks。 I truly hope that while there are some people who view murder as a form of entertainment, the majority of humanity would be rooting for the convicts, not the killers。 And yes I understand this is supposed to be a message a There were elements of this book that could have worked, but in the end the international platform of Alcatraz 2。0 was too big for what was ultimately a very small villain payoff。 Also I absolutely cannot get behind the "quirky" psycho killers on the island and their gimmicks。 I truly hope that while there are some people who view murder as a form of entertainment, the majority of humanity would be rooting for the convicts, not the killers。 And yes I understand this is supposed to be a message about our world, but。。。。I just can't。 。。。more

Excellent dystopian sci fi with a dark humor slant。 A good book to hand to readers who liked The Hunger Games and can handle more government-sanctioned executions but with a modern social media twist。 The violence is gruesome--we're talking about serial killers here, after all, and they are doing their killing on camera for a very twisted reality tv show, so they are coming up with clever new ways to murder--but somehow it didn't bother me that much, maybe because they are over-the-top caricatur Excellent dystopian sci fi with a dark humor slant。 A good book to hand to readers who liked The Hunger Games and can handle more government-sanctioned executions but with a modern social media twist。 The violence is gruesome--we're talking about serial killers here, after all, and they are doing their killing on camera for a very twisted reality tv show, so they are coming up with clever new ways to murder--but somehow it didn't bother me that much, maybe because they are over-the-top caricatures (DIYNona kills using arts and craft supplies! Gucci Hangman likes flowy scarves! Molly Mauler has wild animals in cages!), and the killing is described matter-of-factly and not drawn out with florid descriptions。 The murders in typical serial killer novels like None Shall Sleep or I Hunt Killers are more gory and gruesomely described (if I remember right, it's been awhile), with a more horror novel-type atmosphere。 Also the story is interspersed with internet message board comments that are really funny (#murderpunsFTW!) and that lightened things up。 Dee knows she shouldn't trust her fellow inmates, but she'll have to trust someone eventually, and maybe they're just as innocent of their crimes as she is? The mystery was fun, as Dee starts to see connections between the Alcatraz 2。0 murders and her own traumatic past as a kidnapping victim。 (OK "fun" is relative, but this whole book is "fun," actually, because it's so WEIRD!) I liked the other residents of Alcatraz 2。0--Griselda the cynic, Ethan the action-movie-quoting jock, "Blondy Brit" Nyles--who aren't perhaps the most well-rounded characters in literature, but they had enough depth to them to be entertaining and I loved all of the banter between them。 When fans of 2。0 start calling them the "Death Row Breakfast Club," it made me laugh out loud! (Among many other times I guffawed while reading this!) I have to admit that I enjoyed this book a lot more than I'd originally expected to (hence why it took me 3 years to get around to reading it), and therefore I'm going to go straight to the sequels because I just can't wait to see where McNeil takes it from here。 Great book to use for teens to talk about capital punishment and social media and reality tv, if you want to go deep with it, or, just hand it to teens you know will get a kick out of it's over-the-topness。 Note: a liberal sprinkling of f-bombs (but with all that killing going on, who cares?) and I personally would have preferred a larger size typeface in the hardback edition, it seems unduly small and no I DO NOT need glasses thank you, but that won't bother teen readers I'm sure。 。。。more

Actual rating 1。5 stars。I rarely give ratings below 3 stars but I felt this time it was warranted I wanted to like this book SO bad。 The plot reminded me a little of Battle Royale mixed with some dystopian vibes。 I mean, a future where a murder island is televised? Strap in folks, it's going to be a long one。My main problems with this bookThe characters are just so unlikable; The main character comes off, and I hate to use the term, as a Mary-Sue。 I don't even dislike Mary-Sues。 I think they are valid ways for people to explore their writing。 But this takes the cake。 Here she is almost instantly liked by everyone and throws a hissy fit when one character, RIGHTFULLY SO BECAUSE HELLO MURDER ISLAND???, doesn't like her。 I hate that basically the entire plot leans on (view spoiler)[her being kidnapped by a thirteen year old girl for a week who wanted a sister。 That's right folks, this whole multi million dollar murder island was because of petty revenge because she escaped the imprisonment when she was eleven。 I like horror, I like campy horror。 i don't go into stories expecting realism but this pushed the boundaries for even me。 And I watched Re-Animator about ten times。 (hide spoiler)] It's just your hollow 'oh woe is my i have a tragic past' plot and it's done so ridiciously that it feels like it's parody。 Maybe it is。 Maybe this is a beautiful work of parody and I just didn't notice。 The love interest feels fake。 GOD the accent。 It actually made me want to sob at times at how awful it was to hear him talk like some sort of British cartoon character [He reminded me of that one episode of Fairly Odd Parents where Vicky is in love with this British dude and he keeps mentioning the hunt。] AND I'M NOT EVEN BRITISH。 He's so flat。 He barely does anything other than 'wow we gotta kiss at some point lol otherwise we don't have our hetero romantic subplot'。 There are times where the romantic subplot is done well but this felt boring, the characters had no chemistry and were just so boring to read about。 The bitchy girl is literally just bitchy。 ALL her dialogue is snark。 She is just there。 If you remove her from the story NOTHING would change, which is never a good sign。 Not once does she show even an ounce of kindness or anything other than snark。 (view spoiler)[The author tries to play this off as 'oh she's just used to the gorn around her' which I'm calling bullshit one。 All she does is be hot, be a bitch and that's it。 Nothing more。 (hide spoiler)]The buff jock is so dumb I wonder if it's even possible。 All he does is quote action movies and runs around like a 'hyperactive child' while he's in his 20s [the author's words not mine]。 it's also mentioned in a throwaway line that he's gay, but this is never touched upon ever again。 I feel the author even forgot that because (view spoiler)[it's hinted that he and bitch-y girl had a thing going on。 I know bi people exist。 I am bi people。 But the way it was presented made him out to be gay and then suddenly not? Kinda suspicious how the only two main characters who die POC and one of them is gay。 God, i'm getting so tired of the bury your gays trope。 Stop it。 Stop it now。 (hide spoiler)]They kill of the only likeable character like a few chapters in and by Lord is it downhill from there。(view spoiler)[The fact that Mara is actually Kimmi is beyond stupid and even the Mystery Machine wouldn't buy that。 It's stupid, lame, and it was so predictable that I honestly thought I was purposely set up on the wrong foot。 But nope。 There it is。 There is your bad guy。 Some rich brat who was super whiny that her kidnapee got away。 I'm glad modern science has come so far that we found a new thing the world revolves around。 :) It's our main character。 So important。。 so special。。。 wow。 (hide spoiler)]At one point they mention that all people on the island get a role to play which I feel like was the author trying to save of flat these characters are。 They have ZERO personality other than their one character quirk and they keep at it。 Hell, the jock (view spoiler)[dies while quoting action movies? What the actually H??? (hide spoiler)]The plot is so out there that even someone like me who basically breaths pulpy stuff was annoyed by it。The plot is rather simple, it's kinda like Battle Royale; in a near future there is a island where you get send to after you committed a crime- where you will be eventually killed by a 'quirky' murderer for all to see。 Ok。But you don't actually get killed right away, no。 You get to live there, have a job。 Until you get kidnapped。 Why though? The plot gets more insane as the pages turn and not in a good way (view spoiler)[ Two of them die while doing a Zoolander scene。。。 c'mon。。。 References like this just makes the book dated and kinda lame。 (hide spoiler)] It's thinly veiled commentary about the state of the world at the time the book was publishedYeah。 It was kinda funny at first but got tired really fast。 We get it。 Social Media sucks and Thomas Edison was a witch。 bluh bluh bluh bluhThe main plot point never got resolved(view spoiler)[The plot kickstarts by the main character's stepsister dying and she's framed for it。 She tries to stay alive to figure out who the real killer is。 And then the books forgets about it lol。 There is this bit with a heart being carved into skin。 Dropped。 There is this bit that all of the main character's friends are also framed for murder。 It's dropped。 It never gets to a conclusion other than how hard everyone's cock is for the main character。 (hide spoiler)]Without the gore I would have believed you if you said the book was written for childrenThe main character is just a teenage girl, which is fine but。。。(view spoiler)[SHE is the one that figures all of this out? Even though it's said they had actual serial killers, and MMA fighter at one point? But no it's this random girl who, by her own words, isn't even that athletic? Come。 ON。 (hide spoiler)]There are a lot of editing mistakesUsually I don't mind but entire characters changing appearances between pages? That Rodrigo character。。。It's under a spoiler tag for implied sexual assault (view spoiler)[He shows up, threatens to rape her。 Until dreamy slice of white bread comes in and saves her and goes 'don't you know who she is??' and the guy just backs off like he's seen a ghost。 Why add this? This adds NOTHING。 He makes another appearance only to be told 'haha don't you dare think of rape'。 This could have EASILY been removed and it would have been better for it。 This part just made me mad。 Stop using extremely serious topics like rape as throw away bits。 (hide spoiler)]Nothing about this book was even remotely realistic。 It wasn't funny enough to be a good parody。 I can't believe this got published and I only read it because I kept hoping that the book got a good twist。 But nope。 Waste of time, waste of money。 No。 No。 No。 No。 No。 NEVER AGAIN 。。。more
