Summary

For readers of The Tattooist of Auschwitz and The Choice: this is the story of the smallest library in the world – and the most dangerous。

'It wasn’t an extensive library。 In fact, it consisted of eight books and some of them were in poor condition。 But they were books。 In this incredibly dark place, they were a reminder of less sombre times, when words rang out more loudly than machine guns…’

Fourteen-year-old Dita is one of the many imprisoned by the Nazis at Auschwitz。 Taken, along with her mother and father, from the Terezín ghetto in Prague, Dita is adjusting to the constant terror that is life in the camp。 When Jewish leader Freddy Hirsch asks Dita to take charge of the eight precious books the prisoners have managed to smuggle past the guards, she agrees。 And so Dita becomes the secret librarian of Auschwitz, responsible for the safekeeping of the small collection of titles, as well as the ‘living books’ - prisoners of Auschwitz who know certain books so well, they too can be ‘borrowed’ to educate the children in the camp。

But books are extremely dangerous。 They make people think。 And nowhere are they more dangerous than in Block 31 of Auschwitz, the children’s block, where the slightest transgression can result in execution, no matter how young the transgressor…

The Sunday Times bestseller for readers of The Boy in the Striped PyjamasThe Tattooist of Auschwitz and The Choice。 Based on the incredible and moving true story of Dita Kraus, holocaust survivor and secret librarian for the children's block in Auschwitz。

As hard as it is to read books about the Holocaust, I am inspired by the courage and resilience of those who lived through it。 This is based on the true story of a girlwho was asked to be in charge of the few smuggled books they had for their “school”。

Usually I love historical fiction, but I didn’t really enjoy this one。

So beautiful and horrifying。 This novel really reminds us of the importance of humanity。 Holocaust victims are beautifully humanized in this novel—they’re named, described, given a voice。 This book is great for high schoolers though it is difficult: the content is obviously unpleasant and it’s quite long。 Additionally, there are a lot of characters and it’s easy to become confused。 It took me a while to finish this one, but it was absolutely worth it。

This was a very interesting book that, even though the subject matter was awful, I still enjoyed reading it。 I thought Dita’s character was very well written and I liked how her friends and mother were written。 Fredy Hirsch was another favourite character of mine。 I would recommend this book to anyone who loves history and is interested in the lives of the people imprisoned in the hellhole which is Auschwitz。

I started reading this and went in knowing I was going to cry like a baby at some point。 I will have you know I only cried three times! I lost count of the goose bumps it gave me however。 While this book wasn’t a “true” story, it was true enough and these events actually happened to millions of Jews。 While the world was complaining about being trapped indoors for a year WITH FOOD AND PLUMBING! The hardship and gut wrenching time the Jewish people went through during Hitlers reign was unbelievably worse。 Worse so that they didn’t have beds, they had to drag the dead of their own people from their huts then fight over who got the bed。 The most I had to fight for during our pandemic was my side of the queen size mattress and maybe a glass of milk to go with my pop tart。 What Dita had to endure at such a young age is sickening。 I will never understand how a group of people could be like “yeah, it’s the Jewish people’s fault for everything…let’s just get rid of them…” 🤔 The logic behind that thinking is mind boggling。 I could keep going but I won’t。 If there is ever a book to read when you have a few moment here and there to just sit and ponder what you have just read I would suggest this one。 。。。more
