Summary

The Marvel Heroes have faced the most dangerous threats and saved the Earth and the Universe on occasions too numerous to count。 But what do heroes do when the fabric of reality is threatened by one of their own? It is a question that heroes such as Spider-Man, Wolverine, the X-Men and the Avengers all have to face as former Avenger and daughter of Magneto, the Scarlet Witch succumbs to insanity and makes the world over into her maniacal father's view of utopia, ruled over by the house of Magnus。

This book was not what I expected。 I am definitely a fan, but the cultural obsession over the book's final moments gave me the false impression that the story both centered on Scarlet Witch and focused on a mutant-free world。 Neither is quite true, though this alternate reality story makes for a quality science fiction story akin to what one might read in a Philip K Dick novel。 Reduced to three words, I find this book as follows: Imperfect but fun。 This book was not what I expected。 I am definitely a fan, but the cultural obsession over the book's final moments gave me the false impression that the story both centered on Scarlet Witch and focused on a mutant-free world。 Neither is quite true, though this alternate reality story makes for a quality science fiction story akin to what one might read in a Philip K Dick novel。 Reduced to three words, I find this book as follows: Imperfect but fun。 。。。more

I never know what to expect with a comic event, often it just feels like they force one out so they can throw a load of tie-in issues at you and maybe kill off or revive a character or too。 Sometimes though they’re decent and a lot of fun, even the tie-ins can be worth it。 I can’t speak for those but I did really enjoy ‘House of M’ and I can imagine it’s all around fun。 Again a great example of why Bendis is a big name despite some of the hate he gets。 Definitely worth checking this out, especia I never know what to expect with a comic event, often it just feels like they force one out so they can throw a load of tie-in issues at you and maybe kill off or revive a character or too。 Sometimes though they’re decent and a lot of fun, even the tie-ins can be worth it。 I can’t speak for those but I did really enjoy ‘House of M’ and I can imagine it’s all around fun。 Again a great example of why Bendis is a big name despite some of the hate he gets。 Definitely worth checking this out, especially for its implications on the mutant side of the marvelverse。 。。。more

Re-read this after finishing the WandaVision finale。 The influence is pretty clear albeit not as all encompassing。 I’m still iffy on Bendis’ dialogue after all these years and this kind of represents the turning point for Marvel events where you only get a marginal portion of the story without all the tie-ins。 On the whole, it’s aged。。。ok。 Event series just largely aren’t my cup of tea anymore。

I don't read comics, but I read this one because internet said Wanda Vision was inspired by this one。 (It was available for prime -reading, so that was another reason。)And I enjoyed it。 It's very different from the shows and the movies, Because X-Men and Avengers interact🤷‍♂️。So, 3。5 stars rounded off to 4。 I don't read comics, but I read this one because internet said Wanda Vision was inspired by this one。 (It was available for prime -reading, so that was another reason。)And I enjoyed it。 It's very different from the shows and the movies, Because X-Men and Avengers interact🤷‍♂️。So, 3。5 stars rounded off to 4。 。。。more

Did a reread and this one holds up pretty well。 Asks some interesting questions about desire and what is right。 What if you got what you wanted? Scarlet Witch creates a world where all the heroes are happy。 But once they start to discover that their reality was tampered with, things fall apart。 Spider-Man’s reactions alone are worth the read。 Does it ‘break’ Wanda’s character? Good question, I’m curious about her own series that came later。 Might read that next。

Great storytelling。 The only issue i had was that I wished the stories leading up to this series had been stronger (Excalibur/Disassembled)。 I found those weak I comparison but this series was very strong and I enjoyed it a lot。

I don’t know how Marvel expects children to buy these as even over eight original issues that’s $3 a pop! To put this in perspective, I was buying comics at $。10 per issue。 I guess at some point since then a comet hit the earth and all of us dinosaurs moved on to books – I mean went extinct… And, this collection is one in a series, so once you’re in for a penny, you’re probably in for a pound (of flesh)。Oh, and by the way, the link to Bernie’s specific review of this book is: https://berniegourley。com/2021/02/25/。。。If you have a few minutes to visit his site, I recommend it, too。 。。。more

I did it for the WandaVision。 It’s comics like these that make me feel like I haven’t absorbed enough X-Men content to fully be able to enjoy this to its fullest extent。

Oh my, what an arc。I'm still revelling in how much of a rollercoaster that was。 Definitely not as much for me as it was for our dear heroes。 It was nice to catch up with so many of them, so many there wasn't much space for each one, but each line rang true with what I remember of their characters。In this AU, everyone gets exactly what they wanted, and it's so interesting to figure out exactly what it was for each cherished character, more heartbreakingly sad for some (Cap, Spidey and Wanda, I'm Oh my, what an arc。I'm still revelling in how much of a rollercoaster that was。 Definitely not as much for me as it was for our dear heroes。 It was nice to catch up with so many of them, so many there wasn't much space for each one, but each line rang true with what I remember of their characters。In this AU, everyone gets exactly what they wanted, and it's so interesting to figure out exactly what it was for each cherished character, more heartbreakingly sad for some (Cap, Spidey and Wanda, I'm definitely looking at you) and surprising for others。 I am so impressed with the storytelling, it masterfully entranced me in the drama of having one's world turn upside down (or "go white" as Logan saw it), but also incredibly hooked by the action。 It felt very well balanced, with the artwork that needed a little getting used to but worked well in the end。 The covers were also a beautiful compliment to the narrative。It was so rich for a one-shot, it felt like the story could have gone on for so much longer, but was wisely concentrated in just the right amount of pages to keep me focused and thrilled without getting tired。 One thing everyone's bound to learn from this read: Do not underestimate the Scarlet Witch。 。。。more

I have never been particularly interested in X-men, so this story was a pleasant new experience。 I wish there were more interactions between the Maximoff twins and their father, but, overall, the crossover was refreshing and entertaining。

Great event, it has nice action and a big cast but it feels like it never takes off, I guess that it’s because it was the prologue to New Avengers and the new status quo and we have yet to get to know the consequences。

House of M is an engaging cross-over story brimming with conflict while eschewing the conventional hero/villain dichotomy we see too often in comic books。 In this way, House of M feels less like a comic book and more like a Greek tragedy。 Plus, and this point is relatively meaningless concerning Greek tragedy, Logan delivers the best "Hey, bub" in X-Men storytelling history。 House of M is an engaging cross-over story brimming with conflict while eschewing the conventional hero/villain dichotomy we see too often in comic books。 In this way, House of M feels less like a comic book and more like a Greek tragedy。 Plus, and this point is relatively meaningless concerning Greek tragedy, Logan delivers the best "Hey, bub" in X-Men storytelling history。 。。。more

This book pics up in the wake of a tragedy triggered by Wanda Maximoff’s (a。k。a。 the Scarlet Witch) descent into madness。 Normally, a losing one’s mind would be a cause for sympathy and assistance among heroic individuals, but there are those among her former teammates and friends who think the Scarlet Witch needs to be killed。 The reason for this extreme view is that Maximoff’s tremendously powerful reality-warping abilities make her insanity not merely a risk to herself and to her loved ones, This book pics up in the wake of a tragedy triggered by Wanda Maximoff’s (a。k。a。 the Scarlet Witch) descent into madness。 Normally, a losing one’s mind would be a cause for sympathy and assistance among heroic individuals, but there are those among her former teammates and friends who think the Scarlet Witch needs to be killed。 The reason for this extreme view is that Maximoff’s tremendously powerful reality-warping abilities make her insanity not merely a risk to herself and to her loved ones, but to the nature of reality itself。 The book opens with Charles Xavier trying to help Wanda keep her delusions in check – largely unsuccessfully。 We then see a meeting between survivors of the Avengers and key X-Men to discuss the Scarlet Witch’s future (or lack thereof。) When they go to track Wanda down, in a flash of blinding light, the world is changed。 The next day, almost no one remembers the way the world was – except for Wolverine and a young girl named Layla, a girl who confirms Wolverine’s telling of events, a story that would be outlandish and unbelievable if not for the girl’s independent corroboration。 The new world is Magneto’s dream world。 The mutants have won a war and are in control。 Most of homo sapiens humanity is accepting of this, even if many are having trouble coping, though Luke Cage and a few others have created an underground resistance movement。 In the new reality superheroes are doing pretty well。 Even the homo sapiens heroes such as Spiderman are not bad off because they are generally believed to be mutants。 While Wolverine can merely remember the world as it was, Layla has an additional ability; she can project or unlock these memories in the minds of others。 It’s using this ability that the Wolverine / Cage team put the band back together, taking Layla around to free the minds of Kitty Pryde, Peter Parker, Carol Danvers, Tony Stark, Stephen Strange, She-Hulk, etc。 As the superheroes take the fight to Magneto’s stronghold, Doctor Strange sneaks in to see Wanda Maximoff as she blissfully plays out her imaginary life with her imaginary children, until the battle around her turns tragic and, fed up, she changes the world again。This book collects issues #1-8 of “House of M,” and includes a great deal of bonus content including: character profiles and back ground information (conveyed by way of a fake newspaper) for the alternative reality that Maximoff created – the mutant-dominant world, as well as an interview with the author and sketchbook pages from the illustrator (Oliver Coipel。) I enjoyed this story。 I think because the ensemble cast is so huge – i。e。 it has to squeeze in so many Marvel characters – it’s not as emotionally intense as it could be。 Bendis goes to the trouble of showing us how hard-hit Peter Parker / Spiderman is hit by the discovery that his new blissful world is not real, knowing that actions must be taken to return the world to its previous status quo。 However, the pacing required makes it hard to feel this strongly。 What I think this story did very well is keep everything clear, which is not easy task when one is dealing with shifting realities。 I thought Bendis and Coipel did an excellent job of being clear about when things changed, how things changed for the crucial characters, and did both without getting bogged down。 This is definitely a story that is worth reading。 。。。more
