Summary

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, the quintessential English detective, first appeared in A Study in Scarlett (1887)。 He started featuring in The Strand from 1891andthese stories would eventually be collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892) and The Memories of Sherlock Holmes (1894)。 His death in the short story 'The Final Problem' (1893) met with such outrage, that Doyle was forced to bring him back to life in 'The Adventure of the Empty House' (1903)。 The Complete Illustrated Sherlock Holmes brings together fifty-six short stories and six novels and is a testimony to the continued affection for one of literature's most eccentric and enduring figures。

I cried; "if he really wants someone to share the rooms and the expense, I am the very man for him。 I should prefer having a partner to being alone。"… We met next day as he had arranged, and inspected the rooms at No。 221B, Baker Street。You don't seem to give much thought to the matter in hand," I said at last, interrupting Holmes's musical disquisition。 No data yet," he answered。 "It is a capital mistake to theorize before you have all the evidence。 It biases the judgement。"Sherlock Holmes drew a long breath, and wiped the perspiration from his fore head。 "I should have more faith," he said; "I ought to know by this time that when a fact appears to be opposed to a long train of deductions, it invariably proves to be capable of bearing some other interpretation。Hence things which have perplexed you and made the case more obscure have served to enlighten me and to strengthen my conclusions。 It is a mistake to confound strangeness with mystery。 The most commonplace crime is often the most mysterious, because it presents no new or special features from which deductions may be drawn。 This murder would have been infinitely more difficult to unravel had the body of the victim been simply found lying in the roadway without any of those outré and sensational accompaniments which have rendered it remarkable。 These strange details, far from making the case more difficult, have really had the effect of making it less so。""What you do in this world is a matter of no consequence," returned my companion, bitterly。 "The question is, what can you make people believe that you have done? Never mind," he continued, more brightly, after a pause。 "I would not have missed the investigation for anything。Sherlock Holmes took his bottle from the corner of the mantelpiece, and his hypodermic syringe from its neat morocco case。 With his long, white nervous fingers he adjusted the delicate needle and rolled back his left shirt-cuff For some little time his eyes rested thoughtfully upon the sinewy forearm and wrist, all dotted and scarred with innumerable puncture-marks。 Finally, he thrust the sharp point home, pressed down the tiny piston, and sank back into the velvet-lined arm chair with a long sigh of satisfaction。"My mind," he said, "rebels at stagnation。 Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere。 I can dispense then with artificial stimulants。 But I abhor the dull routine of existence。 I crave for mental exaltation。 That is why I have chosen my own particular profession, or rather created it, for I am the only one in the world。"Miss Morstan and I stood together, and her hand was in mine。 A wondrous subtle thing is love, for here were we two who had never seen each other before that day, between whom no word or even look of affection had ever passed, and yet now in an hour of trouble our hands instinctively sought for each other。 have marveled at it since, but at the time it seemed the most natural thing that I should go out to her so, and, as she has often told me, there was in her also the instinct to turn to me for comfort and protection。 So we stood hand-in-hand, like two children, and there was peace in our hearts for all the dark things that surrounded us。"Winwood Reade is good upon the subject," said Holmes。 "He remarks that, while the individual man is an insoluble puzzle, in the aggregate he becomes a mathematical certainty。 You can, for example, never foretell what any one man will do, but you can say with precision what an average number will be up to。 Individuals vary, but percentages remain constant。"This is indeed a mystery," I remarked。 "What do you imagine that it means?" "I have no data yet。 It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data。 Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts。 But the note itself。 What do you deduce from it?""It saved me from ennui," he answered, yawning。 "Alas! I already feel it closing in upon me。 My life is spent in one long effort to escape from the commonplaces of existence。 These little problems help me to do so。" "And you are a benefactor of the race," said I。 He shrugged his shoulders。 "Well, perhaps, after all, it is of some little use。 he remarked。 " L'homme c'est rien l'oeuvre c'est tout,' (the man is nothing, the work is everything) as Gustave Flaubert wrote to George Sand。"“My dear fellow,” said Sherlock Holmes as we sat on either side of the fire in his lodgings at Baker Street, "life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent。 We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence。 If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chains of events, working through generations, and leading to the most outré results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable。""After all, Watson," said Holmes, reaching up his hand for his clay pipe, "I am not retained by the police to supply their deficiencies。 If Horner were in danger it would be another thing; but this fellow will not appear against him, and the case must collapse。 I suppose that I am commuting a felony, but it is just possible that I am saving a soul。 This fellow will not go wrong again; he is too terribly frightened。 Send him to gaol now, and you make him a gaol-bird for life。 Besides, it is the season of forgiveness。 Chance has put in our way a most singular and whimsical problem, and its solution is its own reward。 If you will have the goodness to touch the bell, Doctor, we will begin another investigation, in which also a bird will be the chief feature。"Violence does, in truth, recoil upon the violent, and the schemer falls into the pit which he digs for another。"It is an old maxim of mine that when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth。"Do you know, Watson," said he, "that it is one of the curses of a mind with a turn like mine that I must look at everything with reference to my own special subject。 You look at these scattered houses, and you are impressed by their beauty。 I look at them, and the only thought which comes to me is a feeling of their isolation and of the impunity with which crime may be committed there。"I follow my own methods, and tell as much or as little as I choose。 That is the advantage of being unofficial。"It is of the highest importance in the art of detection to be able to recognize, out of a number of facts, which are incidental and which vital。 Otherwise your energy and attention must be dissipated instead of being concentrated。During my long and intimate acquaintance with Mr。 Sherlock Holmes I had never heard him refer to his relations, and hardly ever to his own early life。 This reticence upon his part had increased the somewhat inhuman effect which he produced upon me, until sometimes I found myself regarding him as an isolated phenomenon, a brain without a heart, as deficient in human sympathy as he was pre-eminent in intelligence。 His aversion to women, and his disinclination to form new friendships were both typical of his unemotional character, but not more so than his complete suppression of every reference to his own people。 I had come to believe that he was an orphan with no relatives living, but one day, to my very great surprise, he began to talk to me about his brother。"Look at those big, isolated clumps of building rising up above the slates, like brick islands in a lead-coloured sea。" "The Board schools。" "Lighthouses, my boy! Beacons of the future! Capsules with hundreds of bright little seeds in each, out of which will spring the wiser, better England of the future。”How often is imagination the mother of truth? In an instant he had whisked out a revolver from his breast and had fired two shots。 I felt a sudden hot sear as if a red-hot iron had been pressed to my thigh。 There was a crash as Holmes's pistol came down on the man's head。 I had a vision of him sprawling upon the floor with blood running down his face while Holmes rummaged him for weapons。 Then my friend's wiry arms were round me, and he was leading me to a chair。 "You're not hurt, Watson? For God's sake, say that you are not hurt!" It was worth a wound-it was worth many wounds to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask。 The clear, hard for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking。 For the one and only time I caught eyes were dimmed a glimpse of a great heart as well as of a great brain。 All my years of humble but single-minded service culminated in that moment of revelation。 "It's nothing, Holmes。 It's a mere scratch。The relations between us in those latter days were peculiar。 He was a man of habits, narrow and concentrated habits, and I had become one of them。 As an institution I was like the violin, the shag tobacco, the old black pipe, the index books, and others perhaps less excusable。 When it was a case of active work and a comrade was needed upon whose nerve he could place some reliance, my rôle was obvious。 But apart from this I had uses。 I was a whetstone for his mind。 I stimulated him。 He liked to think aloud in my presence。 His remarks could hardly be said to be made to me-many of them would have been as appropriately addressed to his bedstead but none the less, having formed the habit, it had become in some way helpful that I should register and interject。 If I irritated him by a certain methodical slowness in my mentality, that irritation served only to make his own flame-like intuitions and impressions flash up our alliance。 。。。more

Pleasantly surprised with this。 I'm usually cautious to read anything British from before the first world war, but the prose in this - while still definitely from that time and place - wasn't as jarring as what I usually find from that same time period。 Its quite a feat to create several murder mysteries with setup, build up, and conclusion, in just about 20 pages each! The themes and motives of the crimes to get a bit repetitive once you get to the later stories, but the method and the actual deductions are always a joy to read。 I will say that the final third of this collection is much worse than the first two though。 I actually couldn't read one of the stories from the first page, because it starts with a black man entering Holmes' rooms and screaming "massa Holmes" and I was just like okay moving on。 Eugenics are also a problem - with Holmes saying that crime is basically a gene that passes through the generations - but I grant that to the social darwinism of the time, sad as that may be。 Overall I enjoyed it, thought the latter stories left a sour taste in my mouth。 。。。more

Some stories are TERRIFIC。 This time around, the Victorian attitude towards anyone who is not Protestant and English really bugged me。

I was 9 years old when I read The hound of Baskervilles。 Sherlock Holmes is my first book and till date it remains my favourite, maybe because of nostalgia or maybe it really is that good。 Anyway, I will just rate it and not provide a review because I'll be biased。 I was 9 years old when I read The hound of Baskervilles。 Sherlock Holmes is my first book and till date it remains my favourite, maybe because of nostalgia or maybe it really is that good。 Anyway, I will just rate it and not provide a review because I'll be biased。 。。。more

Sherlock Holmes and Dr。 John Watson have been two of my favorite characters for a long time。 When I saw the chance to get nearly the entire original collection in one audiobook with the same narrator, I jumped at the chance。 I was not disappointed by the quality nor the narration。 The only disappointment I had was that, though it’s called a collection, it is missing the last collection of short stories, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, but other than that? It was amazing。 Stephen Fry’s notes about his own relationship with the series are fascinating。 His insights into the various books and collections are unique and entertaining。 But his narration takes the cake。 His Holmes is aloof and above-it-all, his Watson is engaging and delightful, and all other characters are voiced so well that it’s enthralling。 With variety and a few great accents, this is one of the finest audiobooks I have ever come across。 If you love the Sherlock Holmes books, this is one collection you don’t want to be without。 Missing only the final book written by Doyle, this is over sixty hours of Holmes and Watson being their amazing selves, and with fantastic narration to boot。 From their meeting in A Study in Scarlet to Holmes’s last case for the country of England in His Last Bow, this encompasses the lives of two men who battled crime in the streets of London and became the best of friends and the greatest duo in the history of literature。 。。。more

I really love murder mysteries and Conan Doyle is one of the best in the area。 The way Sherlock is written and how he makes deductions is mind-blowing。 I like how they put an alternative story that is not John’s point of view in ¨a study in scarlet¨

Good Reading for Entertainment and for an Insight into the PeriodSome of the stories, such as The Hound of Baskerville, were highly entertaining。 Equally entertaining were the quaint manners and customs of the period, with cabs and telegraph's, and gentlemen and riffraff。 Good Reading for Entertainment and for an Insight into the PeriodSome of the stories, such as The Hound of Baskerville, were highly entertaining。 Equally entertaining were the quaint manners and customs of the period, with cabs and telegraph's, and gentlemen and riffraff。 。。。more

Thank you kindly, Mr。 Holmes。 You saved me from plenty a sleepless night。 Although never boring, the stories always brought a sense of calm adventure to my mind。 It is with great pleasure, and sadness, that I lay you aside — for now。I feel like I couldn’t be far away from Dr。 Watson。

I wished to give 10 out of 5 as my rating any day。This is not the first time I have read the Sherlock Holmes stories。 It all started when I was a child, reading some abridged versions, continued during my school days as text books, later in various translations in my native Bengali language and the memorable role played by Jeremy Brett in TV series。 Also read indirect adaptations in Bengali detective stories by various authors。 I am certain that any human being who has some licking for detective I wished to give 10 out of 5 as my rating any day。This is not the first time I have read the Sherlock Holmes stories。 It all started when I was a child, reading some abridged versions, continued during my school days as text books, later in various translations in my native Bengali language and the memorable role played by Jeremy Brett in TV series。 Also read indirect adaptations in Bengali detective stories by various authors。 I am certain that any human being who has some licking for detective stories will have to read at least some stories of Sherlock Holmes。 This volume is the best unabridged version of the stories I have ever read with the original illustrations enlightening my experience greatly。I salute both the author and the character。 。。。more
