Summary

Bright, uplifting photographs show children from different countries dressed in traditional clothing from each culture。 Captions suggest context for the images; “Dressing up means celebrating who we are。。。 and what we believe,” reads one。 A smiling child from Papua New Guinea wears a feathered crown and necklace, while two children from Ethiopia are adorned with decorative beads and shells。 Another spread shows children from Japan, the United Kingdom, the U。S。, and Malawi dressed in sports uniforms。 Although the book doesn’t include any specific information or details about the apparel featured, end pages suggest ways for readers to discover more about clothing worn around the world, both in the past and in the present。 Ages 4–7。

1。 This book celebrates all cultures across the globe by way of showcasing unified clothing trends from country to country in sports, play, costume, school, and celebrations。 It includes beautiful images that helps each country include a snapshot into their heritage and culture。 This book teaches the reader a powerful lesson that children everywhere might look different in their appearance, as traditions vary across cultures, but they are all the same on the inside。2。 I really enjoyed the imager 1。 This book celebrates all cultures across the globe by way of showcasing unified clothing trends from country to country in sports, play, costume, school, and celebrations。 It includes beautiful images that helps each country include a snapshot into their heritage and culture。 This book teaches the reader a powerful lesson that children everywhere might look different in their appearance, as traditions vary across cultures, but they are all the same on the inside。2。 I really enjoyed the imagery in this text and found the message to be very positive and uplifting for young readers。 I think it is imperative that children learn about other cultures across the globe。 However, that being said, I caution an educator to provide more detail when reading the text。 I fear that a child might get the idea that all people from these specific countries dress in these traditional garments daily when many of them are just for celebrations or specific events happening within their cultures。 3。 I would pair this with a book with either a similar, but more detailed, informational text like "Children Just Like Me: A New Celebration of Children Around the World" by Dorling Kindersley Publishing Staff or I would pair it with a text like "Same, Same but Different" because both texts are trying to convey the same message about culture。 We are all different in our heritage and culture and specific day-to-day nuances but similar in that we all share the human condition。4。 I would use this book as a mentor text for writing to have my students tell me about their heritage or culture。 。。。more

This book relies on pictures。 There is no story, the words only tell you where in the world each picture was taken。 It shows that while in most places people wear clothes, they may be different types。

Wonderful photographs of children around the world in traditional dress。 My second graders enjoyed the book。

A short book with limited text alongside photographs of children from around the world。 They all wear special clothes to school, for playing pretend, dressing up, and more。 At the end are suggestions to begin learning more about clothing and cultures from where you are - without a plane ticket。

The book features photographs of children from many countries dressed in national costume。 We love to learn about other countries, and this book provided a very interest springboard for conversation。

Few words with gorgeous photos。 Back matter with map and suggested activities to help young ones learn about other cultures carries the nonfiction content。 Part of the proceeds go to The Global Fund for Children。

What We Wear Dressing up Around the World gives children so much insight on the world。 This book takes the readers on a trip around the world learning about many different races and cultures。 In the classroom this book would be great to help explain maybe a students culture。 The book does not have a lot of information but it does leave plenty of room for questions。 Students would be able to relate and some will learn about their friends。 This book would be great to have and read to students to h What We Wear Dressing up Around the World gives children so much insight on the world。 This book takes the readers on a trip around the world learning about many different races and cultures。 In the classroom this book would be great to help explain maybe a students culture。 The book does not have a lot of information but it does leave plenty of room for questions。 Students would be able to relate and some will learn about their friends。 This book would be great to have and read to students to help them learn about diversity and where people come from。 。。。more

The gloriously photographed "What We Wear" by Maya Ajmera, Elise Hofer Derstine and Cynthia Pon is a children's book I'd enjoy even if it were just photos。 Artfully laid out with bold text accompanying the photos the children on all of the pages in different forms of dress are inspiring and beautiful。 I specifically loved the Japanese, Iranian and Swedish costumes because they utilized different prints cleverly also。 Despite its obvious appeal for children, as an adult who's also into fashion, The gloriously photographed "What We Wear" by Maya Ajmera, Elise Hofer Derstine and Cynthia Pon is a children's book I'd enjoy even if it were just photos。 Artfully laid out with bold text accompanying the photos the children on all of the pages in different forms of dress are inspiring and beautiful。 I specifically loved the Japanese, Iranian and Swedish costumes because they utilized different prints cleverly also。 Despite its obvious appeal for children, as an adult who's also into fashion, I enjoyed it and will probably refer to it again in the future。 。。。more

I was really torn between two and three stars。 I like the bright pictures of all of the children, and they help kids see similarities and differences in their clothes and that of other kids in other countries。 It also helps them see that beneath it all, they're all kids! What I didn't like is that some of the outfits of American children didn't quite match what kids really wear day to day here (the soccer uniform was accurate, but the others?) A generally-good introduction to the variety of differences and similarities in clothing throughout the world。 This book would absolutely have a place on my classroom's shelves except, unfortunately, not a single image comes from South Korea, my students' country of origin。 That's not a fatal flaw for most readers, but my students so often encounter images of Chinese and Japanese culture in America, yet rarely their own, that I don't feel comfortable furthering that myself。 For people without th A generally-good introduction to the variety of differences and similarities in clothing throughout the world。 This book would absolutely have a place on my classroom's shelves except, unfortunately, not a single image comes from South Korea, my students' country of origin。 That's not a fatal flaw for most readers, but my students so often encounter images of Chinese and Japanese culture in America, yet rarely their own, that I don't feel comfortable furthering that myself。 For people without this narrow concern, the stock photos chosen are an excellent blend, showing wildly different traditional costumes, nearly-identical modern clothes, and close views of friendly faces, even behind unfamiliar face paint or headwear。 。。。more

Photos of joyous kids from all around the world bring this nonfiction picture book to life。 The text for the entire book is only a few sentences long and describes the different reasons kids dress up: to have fun, celebrate culture, indicate religious beliefs, etc。 Each photo simply names the country it is taken in。 The back matter has some extension activities but no further details about the pictures/costumes。 This is definitely a bare-bones introduction to the subject matter, but it's perfect Photos of joyous kids from all around the world bring this nonfiction picture book to life。 The text for the entire book is only a few sentences long and describes the different reasons kids dress up: to have fun, celebrate culture, indicate religious beliefs, etc。 Each photo simply names the country it is taken in。 The back matter has some extension activities but no further details about the pictures/costumes。 This is definitely a bare-bones introduction to the subject matter, but it's perfect for pre-K to 1st grade。 You really can't help but smile as you read this book!I wish the photos were bigger for large-group sharing。 But kids will probably want to look through this on their own, too, so as long as it's available for individual browsing, that's probably not a problem。My younger daughter, Maddie, was fascinated with the book (un)Fashion and reread it many times over the years。 She would have loved this book when she was little! 。。。more
