Summary

THE CLASSIC COLLECTION OF ROBOT STORIES FROM THE MASTER OF THE GENRE。

Earth is ruled by master-machines but the Three Laws of Robotics have been designed to ensure humans maintain the upper hand:

1) A robot may not injure a human being or allow a human being to come to harm。
2) A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law。
3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law。

But what happens when a rogue robot’s idea of what is good for society contravenes the Three Laws?

Because I'm four novels into Asimov's FOUNDATION series, I figured it's time to begin a book in his Robot Series, so I began with this collection of what are essentially short stories that tell the history of robotics in the not-so-far future。 Some of the stories are excellent, a few mind-blowing, while others merely fun, but all of them are though-provoking and very relevant to the current trajectory of the species as far as our work in robotics are concerned。 Because I'm four novels into Asimov's FOUNDATION series, I figured it's time to begin a book in his Robot Series, so I began with this collection of what are essentially short stories that tell the history of robotics in the not-so-far future。 Some of the stories are excellent, a few mind-blowing, while others merely fun, but all of them are though-provoking and very relevant to the current trajectory of the species as far as our work in robotics are concerned。 。。。more

It seems to never fail。 Classics never seem to live up to the hype。 This is a series of short stories that tells the story of Robots in the future。 I do not mind it not aging well。 That happens in all books。 The book just didn't seem to flow for me。 I'll read some more Asimov。 I'm not ready to write it off yet。 It seems to never fail。 Classics never seem to live up to the hype。 This is a series of short stories that tells the story of Robots in the future。 I do not mind it not aging well。 That happens in all books。 The book just didn't seem to flow for me。 I'll read some more Asimov。 I'm not ready to write it off yet。 。。。more

This collection of short stories, while interesting, lacks a certain "human" (forgive me) element that left me feeling out of sorts。 The ideas presented certainly seem to be logical and unique, but the way the stories are told feels bland。 I frequently found myself forgetting who was who in the stories, something that doesn't typically happen to me when reading。 Asimov stated that he focused more on the ideas presented than the writing itself, and it shows。 The wraparound that connects all of th This collection of short stories, while interesting, lacks a certain "human" (forgive me) element that left me feeling out of sorts。 The ideas presented certainly seem to be logical and unique, but the way the stories are told feels bland。 I frequently found myself forgetting who was who in the stories, something that doesn't typically happen to me when reading。 Asimov stated that he focused more on the ideas presented than the writing itself, and it shows。 The wraparound that connects all of the stories (Susan's interview) was satisfying。 。。。more

If I'd read this NOT directly after Asimov's Foundation (OG) trilogy, I might have rated it higher。 But idk it has some cool ideas, like I've come to expect with him, but the characters & dialogue piss me off too much。 Every single character (except for bae Stephen Byerley) seems to constantly be mad & agitated or emotionally absent & going through some hard times。 I don't need it。 Everyone is always on the verge of a breakdown, there is no standard emotion besides frustration & sometimes indiff If I'd read this NOT directly after Asimov's Foundation (OG) trilogy, I might have rated it higher。 But idk it has some cool ideas, like I've come to expect with him, but the characters & dialogue piss me off too much。 Every single character (except for bae Stephen Byerley) seems to constantly be mad & agitated or emotionally absent & going through some hard times。 I don't need it。 Everyone is always on the verge of a breakdown, there is no standard emotion besides frustration & sometimes indifferent superiority。 People are always grinning humourously & seemingly shouting at the person they're talking to in random moments of emotional upheaval for some of the world's greatest scientists。 Calvin became kinda more interesting towards the end, but was still someone I'd hold personal disdain for if I had to have a conversation with them。 I like the way he made all the short stories feel more like a novel, that was neat。 Anyway, I liked it, have started Caves of Steel (which in its first chapter already seems to already be in a completely different universe than the original short stories were in, even though he wanted to change that later) & look forward to reading a few more Robot stories before continuing with Foundation & inevitably being disappointed in the fact he tried to make it all a single universe without doing at least minor corrections in second editions of his books。 。。。more

it's a 3。5。 it's not what I usually read but a person who I love a lot recommended it to me so I had to read it。 there were a few parts I really enjoyed, but not the whole book。There was a time when humanity faced the universe alone and without a friend。 Now he has creatures to help him; stronger creatures than himself, more faithful, more useful, and absolutely devoted to him。 Mankind is no longer alone。 Have you ever thought of it that way?”“We have to,” was the unshaken response。 “Gloria has it's a 3。5。 it's not what I usually read but a person who I love a lot recommended it to me so I had to read it。 there were a few parts I really enjoyed, but not the whole book。There was a time when humanity faced the universe alone and without a friend。 Now he has creatures to help him; stronger creatures than himself, more faithful, more useful, and absolutely devoted to him。 Mankind is no longer alone。 Have you ever thought of it that way?”“We have to,” was the unshaken response。 “Gloria has lost five pounds in the last month and my little girl’s health is more important to me than your comfort。”“It’s a pity you didn’t think of your little girl’s health before you deprived her of her pet robot,” he muttered – but to himself。Grace Weston considered。 She turned toward Gloria and Robbie and watched them abstractedly for a moment。 Gloria had a grip about the robot’s neck that would have asphyxiated any creature but one of metal, and was prattling nonsense in half-hysterical frenzy。 Robbie’s chrome-steel arms (capable of bending a bar of steel two inches in diameter into a pretzel) wound about the little girl gently and lovingly, and his eyes glowed a deep, deep red。“Well,” said Mrs Weston, at last, “I guess he can stay with us until he rusts。”“Surely you know the fundamental First Law of Robotics。”The other two nodded together。 “Certainly,” said Bogert, Irritably, “a robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow him to come to harm”“How nicely put,” sneered Calvin。“But what kind of harm?”“Why – any kind。”“Exactly! Any kind! But what about hurt feelings? What about deflation of one’s ego? What about the blasting of one’s hopes? Is that injury?”“And I suppose that is why,” said Lanning, tonelessly, “it would not answer a little while ago。 It couldn’t answer either way without hurting one of us。”The psychologist paid no attention。 “You must tell them, but if you do, you hurt, so you mustn’t; but if you don’t, you hurt, so you must; but–”And Herbie screamed! It was like the whistling of a piccolo many times magnified – shrill and shriller till it keened with the terror of a lost soul and filled the room with the piercingness of itself。And when it died into nothingness, Herbie collapsed into a huddled heap of motionless metal。Bogert’s face was bloodless, “He’s dead!”“No!” Susan Calvin burst into body-racking gusts of wild laughter, “not dead – merely insane。 I confronted him with the insoluble dilemma, and he broke down。 You can scrap him now – because he’ll never speak again。”It was minutes after the two scientists left that Dr Susan Calvin regained part of her mental equilibrium。 Slowly, her eyes turned to the living-dead Herbie and the tightness returned to her face。 Long she stared while the triumph faded and the helpless frustration returned – and of all her turbulent thoughts only one infinitely bitter word passed her lips。“Liar!”“I’ll put it shortly, Byerley。 Your crippled teacher is the real Stephen Byerley。 You are his robot creation。 We can prove it。 It was he who was in the automobile accident, not you。 There will be ways of checking the records。”“Really?“I mean there is one time when a robot may strike a human being without breaking the First Law。 Just one time。”“And when is that?”Dr Calvin was at the door。 She said quietly, “When the human to be struck is merely another robot。”She smiled broadly, 。。。more

Was expecting an entertaining story to color my fading memories of the Will Smith movie - wooops。 This book is a collection of short stories incorporating badly-aged scientific understanding and pseudo logic to explore ethical and existential implications of robotics。 Interesting, I’m sure, for its 1950s time but often feels silly in current context。

Though this book does suffer from most of Asimov's weaknesses as a writer, the groundbreaking nature of these collected stories far outweighs these problems。 He basically laid the groundwork for all robot-related sci-fi in just under 300 pages。 The concepts of freewill and humanity vis a vis robots vs。 humans are still being explored this day。 In more depth and with more nuance, granted, but they wouldn't exist without this collection, making it essential for all sci-fi fans。 Though this book does suffer from most of Asimov's weaknesses as a writer, the groundbreaking nature of these collected stories far outweighs these problems。 He basically laid the groundwork for all robot-related sci-fi in just under 300 pages。 The concepts of freewill and humanity vis a vis robots vs。 humans are still being explored this day。 In more depth and with more nuance, granted, but they wouldn't exist without this collection, making it essential for all sci-fi fans。 。。。more

Very impressive。 Starting from the beginning of the robot age to the very last stop where robots are very similar to mankind is very attractive way of telling a story。 The best thing I like about Asimov is that he does not give unnecessary information throughout the whole story, just the important parts。 Awesome

I saw this movie in the theatre and I loved the story。 I went in thinking this was going to be, at least, similar to the movie。 The story in the movie is not in here。 This is a book of short stories set in the future where there are robots。 The movie took the 3 laws and the idea of a robot with the 3 laws and did their own thing。 The movie is much better。I found Isaac's writing to be confusing。 People are having a conversation and all the sudden a new character is in the conversation and I wonde I saw this movie in the theatre and I loved the story。 I went in thinking this was going to be, at least, similar to the movie。 The story in the movie is not in here。 This is a book of short stories set in the future where there are robots。 The movie took the 3 laws and the idea of a robot with the 3 laws and did their own thing。 The movie is much better。I found Isaac's writing to be confusing。 People are having a conversation and all the sudden a new character is in the conversation and I wondered where the new person came from。 It happened in the later stories often。 They were talking about a character, what they were going to say to him and then the character is there and they are talking to him。 It's messy in my mind。 What Isaac is good at is coming up with out there situations where the robots seem to be malfunctioning and seeing the characters figure out why a thing is happening is interesting。 Isaac was amazing with logic puzzles。 That was cool。 We had a few characters we saw through the book。 Dr。 Calvin was the only woman and she was in most of the stories。 I felt there could have been more developed with the world。 Most things are told, not shown。 We don't see exactly how normal people feel about the robots, we only hear about it。I knew the style would be older and I was okay with that, but the story didn't blow me away。 It was interesting and the 3 laws are a cool thing that so many people after this have used。 It's a foundation in modern Science Fiction。 I'm glad I read it, but I really can't say I'm much of a fan。 I'm giving it a low 3 star rating。 I feel like it is the foundation of which many sci-fy books stand on, but it simply wasn't a whole lot of fun to watch。 It took me forever to read。 I could give this 2 stars, but it simply did to much for the genre。 It's a classic。 I might read more in this series。 I'm not sure yet。 。。。more
