Summary

In his popular Stanford University lectures, Shirzad Chamine reveals how to achieve one’s true potential for both professional success and personal fulfillment。 His groundbreaking research exposes ten well-disguised mental Saboteurs。 Nearly 95 percent of the executives in his Stanford lectures conclude that these Saboteurs cause “significant harm” to achieving their true potential。 With Positive Intelligence, you can learn the secret to defeating these internal foes。 Positive Intelligence (PQ)SM measures the percentage of time your mind is serving you as opposed to sabotaging you。 While your IQ and EQ (emotional intelligence) contribute to your maximum potential, it is your PQ that determines how much of that potential you actually achieve。

The great news is that you can improve your PQ significantly in as little as 21 days。 With higher PQ, teams and professionals ranging from leaders to salespeople perform 30 to 35 percent better on average。 Importantly, they also report being far happier and less stressed。 The breakthrough tools and techniques in this book have been refined over years of coaching hundreds of CEOs and their executive teams。 Shirzad tells many of their remarkable stories, showing how you too can take concrete steps to unleash the vast, untapped powers of your mind。

Discover how to
•    Identify and conquer your top Saboteurs。 Common Saboteurs include the Judge, Controller, Victim, Avoider, and Pleaser。
•    Measure the Positive Intelligence score (PQ) for yourself or your team—and see how close you come to the critical tipping point required for peak performance。
•    Increase PQ dramatically in as little as 21 days。
•    Develop new brain “muscles,” and access 5 untapped powers with energizing mental “power games。”
•    Apply PQ tools and techniques to increase both performance and fulfillment。 Applications include team building, mastering workload, working with “difficult” people, improving work/life balance, reducing stress, and selling and persuading。

Interestingly, even when we take self-improvement initiatives (such as NY resolutions or courses) social scientists say we quickly fall back to our unique ‘happiness baseline’, once we lose focus。The descriptions of the 9 ‘saboteurs’ (I could certainly relate to all of them!) are well presented; those voices in your head criticizing, denouncing, and slamming your ideas。 It explains how they emerge from our survival instinct, developed as children。 The ‘sage’ mind is the proposed counter solution, so the challenge is to silence your saboteurs by training you mind to call on the sage。 It offers practical tips on how to strength your sage muscles to avoid falling back to your default baseline。 It includes some really useful case studies on the application of the theory in work, personal and relationship scenarios, illustrating the broad capability of the PQ concept。 Worth a read。 。。。more

Great book, solid research-based theory。 I liked this book enough to follow up with the website and other programs。

I learned a lot about myself。

Matt

Good book。 Good theory。 First half of book was good, second half got into examples which got a little tedious。

Great framework - the app is a great way to go through the program and create new habits and build mental, psychological and emotional resilience。 I thought the theory was solid and I really enjoyed seeing myself grow and change。

The book is flush with profound ideas backed up by research- but the biggest thing to come from the book for me has been in “doing” the book through the PQ app-based program。 It’s been amazing- I’m currently 4 weeks in a hugely impressed at the difference it’s creating in the way I function。

This is a GREAT book。 Ok, there's nothing new about it - it's all really about mindfulness and slowing down a little - but the way it's put together as a series of actions you can take is what makes the difference。 I've been implementing it at the same time as reading it and I do feel it has made a difference。 The question for me will be, now I've finished it and am moving on to another book, will the practice stay with me? Through coaching training, I learned and practiced the core principles expressed in this book。 It was fascinating and enlightening to read the origin of the principles and learn of other applications。 Very practical, very beneficial。

3。5 stars, fast read, but would have liked to understand more about the science behind it。

To anyone stuck in life and realized that it’s not the people or the circumstances preventing them from moving forward but it’s their own mind or thought。。 yet can’t figure out how to handle it? A very insightful perspective on how our default patterns can prevent us from being happy or function at our best, and a simple yet effective solution to remedy that。 A combination of neuro-science, mindfulness and CBT。While at the beginning I was a bit put off by the negativity of the Saboteurs vocabulary, in the end I found this very helpful to better understand these parts within me。

My copy went from page 88 and then missed pages 89 until 137。 It picked up again at page 138, it then went through to page 184, where it went to page 138, where upon it went to page 224。 I returned it to Amazon and got my money back。

Having studied positive psychology and taken coaching training, I can see clearly how the author has woven tried and true science into his framework。 I appreciate that the framework really feels accessible and understandable and hopeful that this book can contribute toward a kinder world full of love for self and other。

Alice

The book is oddly abstract despite being simple, but I read alongside the course which was infinitely useful!

This book provided me with valuable insight into how our innate survival instincts can sabotage our happiness and well being。 It also provided a glimpse of neuroplasticity and how we can foster growth in more positive regions of our brains。 The author provides specific tools rather than just motivation。 I think it would be beneficial for anyone to read as it helps one to understand the motivations of others as well as oneself。

I really struggled to get through this book although I’m not much of a self-help book person。 There were certain ideas/techniques I liked and will try but most of it just wasn’t applicable to me。 I didn’t bother reading a lot of the business stuff which may have been more insightful than the rest but from what I read it wasn’t anything revolutionary。 It felt somewhat simple and not practical in some advice but it did provide a few good tools and games to use。

I am in the process of taking this amazing Positive Intelligence coaches training with Shirzad。 As part of this transformative 7-week intensive program; the app offers the ebook, weekly lessons and daily PQ reps to build a practice of breaking through what were "survival" habits as a child to replacing those sabotaging thoughts and emotions with wiser sage responses to experience more happiness with life's circumstances。 I am taking the training with a POD, two other mindfulness coaches at work I am in the process of taking this amazing Positive Intelligence coaches training with Shirzad。 As part of this transformative 7-week intensive program; the app offers the ebook, weekly lessons and daily PQ reps to build a practice of breaking through what were "survival" habits as a child to replacing those sabotaging thoughts and emotions with wiser sage responses to experience more happiness with life's circumstances。 I am taking the training with a POD, two other mindfulness coaches at work and we meet on a regular basis to reinforce application of the tools and process。 My only complaint about the book was that it was too short - I wanted so much more material, but that is where the training program enhances the overall experience。 What a journey it has already been learning how to weaken my saboteurs and strengthen my sage muscle。 Can't wait to share this tool with my coaching clients! 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really liked reading about the saboteurs, and conflict de-escalation。 Some of the sage practice techniques sounded a lot like mindful meditation, but the term was never mentioned (or I at least didn't remember seeing it。。。)。 Did the author think they came up with mindfulness on their own? Or if it's different than mindfulness, then I feel like it should have been mentioned to describe the difference。 I really liked reading about the saboteurs, and conflict de-escalation。 Some of the sage practice techniques sounded a lot like mindful meditation, but the term was never mentioned (or I at least didn't remember seeing it。。。)。 Did the author think they came up with mindfulness on their own? Awesome and useful, especially when read in tandem with loads of self-care, self-compassion, and extremely active participation in PQ development。

The idea of positive intelligence is convincing。 Though it requires a conscious effort all the time to overcome your saboteurs。

Same topic as The inner game of tennis but explained in a more conceptual and detailed way, with practical exercises and cases on mindfulness and communication。
