I'm currently reading this book for the second time。 I started it the first time on January 1, 2021 and read one page each day for 100 days。 It's written by the head priest of a 450-year-old Zen Buddhist temple in Japan, who is also an award-winning Zen garden designer。 Each day the author offers and explains a simple practice the reader can perform to create a calmer, more joyful life。 I don't think all the practices are relevant to my current life situation (e。g。, being retired), but many have I'm currently reading this book for the second time。 I started it the first time on January 1, 2021 and read one page each day for 100 days。 It's written by the head priest of a 450-year-old Zen Buddhist temple in Japan, who is also an award-winning Zen garden designer。 Each day the author offers and explains a simple practice the reader can perform to create a calmer, more joyful life。 I don't think all the practices are relevant to my current life situation (e。g。, being retired), but many have been quite helpful。 I've marked the pages that resonate with me the most, so I can quickly find them when I feel anxious。 I'll finish with a quote from Publishers Weekly -- "Does for mental clutter what Marie Kondo has done for household clutter。" 。。。more

I had wanted to take this book more slowly, intending to stop at one of the daily practices that resonated with me, but nothing really resonated with me。 It was easy to read, maybe better as a read when you are struggling with a particular problem。 Nothing really special in my opinion。

perfect over a morning cup of coffee。 there is nothing ground breaking here, just simple reminders。 and that can be nice sometimes。

The author is a Zen Buddhist (head) priest, a Zen garden designer, lecturer, and environmental design professor at an art school。 These are 100 lessons for happiness and calm, put in four parts。 Some parts are clearly connected and there is some repetition, but it doesn’t really disturb the flow。 One gets among other things a light introduction to Zen, and I learned for instance why Zen paintings are done only in black ink (chapter 65), and why there’s that using of koans (chapter 87)。 The last The author is a Zen Buddhist (head) priest, a Zen garden designer, lecturer, and environmental design professor at an art school。 These are 100 lessons for happiness and calm, put in four parts。 Some parts are clearly connected and there is some repetition, but it doesn’t really disturb the flow。 One gets among other things a light introduction to Zen, and I learned for instance why Zen paintings are done only in black ink (chapter 65), and why there’s that using of koans (chapter 87)。 The last chapter can act also as the conclusion chapter。 The version that I review here had beautiful and colorful paintings that really fit well among the chapters。Subjects including eating, not-thinking meditations, Zen gardens and meditations, on cleaning and owning less, breathing style, appreciating nature, cultivating a right attitude and being positive, and so on。 I do think that some of this writing has been done with Japanese audience in mind, but it easy to apply even if you’re not。 Of course, not all chapters may feel like you can apply them to your life, but even so I feel that most would。 The chapters are short, so one could easily use this book for daily-chapter reading。Even after having read some books on Zen already I feel I got something out of this, and the book was quick to read。 Afterwards I had the feeling that this would belong among my ‘essentials’ books, even when not a ‘top ten’ kind of book – very rereadable。 And the illustrations made things even better。 A lot to think about, a lot to use in one’s life to improve it。 。。。more

Draguta, dar nu te impresioneaza。Mi-am placut sfaturile din partea stanga, dar nu mi-a placut descrierea lor din partea dreapta。Pare cam superficiala, fata de alte carti pe acest subiect。

I enjoyed this book。 It's very light reading and, while the underlying message is very simple, it's good to be reminded, sometimes。 It was also interesting to hear how Buddhism shapes the worldview of the author, and how old and modern wisdom can lead to us being happier and healthier people。This book won't change my future, but it was lovely in the present, like a warm cup of tea on a cold day。 I enjoyed this book。 It's very light reading and, while the underlying message is very simple, it's good to be reminded, sometimes。 It was also interesting to hear how Buddhism shapes the worldview of the author, and how old and modern wisdom can lead to us being happier and healthier people。This book won't change my future, but it was lovely in the present, like a warm cup of tea on a cold day。 。。。more

20210520 ◊ A lovely little book。 A bit naive and oversimplistic at times, but not obnoxiously so。 I read one passage before my sitting meditation every day, and enjoyed this practice so much that I'm continuing it with another book of short, contemplative passages: Your True Home: The Everyday Wisdom of Thich Nhat Hanh: 365 days of practical, powerful teachings from the beloved Zen teacher。 20210520 ◊ A lovely little book。 A bit naive and oversimplistic at times, but not obnoxiously so。 I read one passage before my sitting meditation every day, and enjoyed this practice so much that I'm continuing it with another book of short, contemplative passages: Your True Home: The Everyday Wisdom of Thich Nhat Hanh: 365 days of practical, powerful teachings from the beloved Zen teacher。 。。。more

Good concepts but lacks depthThis would be a good quick reminder of basic principles to live if you are already practicing some form of mindfulness。 Though the concepts are really good, the book doesn't go into details of how to implement them。 Good concepts but lacks depthThis would be a good quick reminder of basic principles to live if you are already practicing some form of mindfulness。 Though the concepts are really good, the book doesn't go into details of how to implement them。 。。。more

When I read Sapiens and Jobs there were excerpts about Zen way of living and I was impressed to read a full book about it。This book will be a quick read with one simple Zen idea in one page。 No waste of time just gets to what he wants to say。 It tells you what to do but not how to achieve it。 All in all the book has really good insights, worth a quick breeze。Would love a recommendation of books based on Zen。
