Summary

Hurt people hurt people。

Say there was a novel in which Holden Caulfield was an alcoholic and Lolita was a photographer’s assistant and, somehow, they met in Bright Lights, Big City。 He’s blinded by love。 She by ambition。 Diary of an Oxygen Thief is an honest, hilarious, and heartrending novel, but above all, a very realistic account of what we do to each other and what we allow to have done to us。

How。。。 why was this even published? I'm so appalled to learn that so many young teenage girls have read this and enjoyed it。 The worst thing is that some of them see the narrator as a 'morally grey villain' or a 'damaged soul' when he's really just an unapologetic whiny dickhead。 This is the story of a narcissistic and manipulative asshole with a victim complex who enjoys hurting girls and justifies it by using his own trauma (which is so fucking stupid btw)。 Not only was this misogynistic and c How。。。 why was this even published? An interesting one and much more candid than I thought it would be。 Initially I assumed it was going to be written for laughs in an attempt to troll oversensitive people。。。 I got that impression less from the blurb but more from the reviews on here, where people are overreacting slightly and finding the whole thing offensive。。。 but on reading this it actually seems pretty genuine, the real deal, it's actually been written by someone who isn't a nice person。 For me that answers up all kinds of qu An interesting one and much more candid than I thought it would be。 Initially I assumed it was going to be written for laughs in an attempt to troll oversensitive people。。。 I got that impression less from the blurb but more from the reviews on here, where people are overreacting slightly and finding the whole thing offensive。。。 but on reading this it actually seems pretty genuine, the real deal, it's actually been written by someone who isn't a nice person。 For me that answers up all kinds of questions, like, why shouldn't a book but judged on it's own merits rather than from the personality of either the author or the protagonist? Does a main character need to be relatable? I don't think so。 For me, reading is all about getting insights into other perspectives, I try my best to leave my morality at the door。 If a book can give me some understanding of your typical edge lord's sociopathic and abusive tendencies, then why not read it? As to the actual quality of the book itself? Well, it reads well enough, it's kind of funny in places, not as shocking as it thinks it is in other places, kind of garbled in the middle, but it made me reassess some of the dickheads I've met IRL。 。。。more

So, I read the male manipulator book of male manipulator books。 Diary of an Oxygen Thief。 It was actually a friends recommendation {thanks serenity :)} and I was pleasantly surprised。 Now, let me say I do not condone the narrators actions。 Got it? Good。 Anyways, I thought it was a nice character to read about for 151 pages, even if he’s a major dickhead。 Enjoyed this book。 4。3/5 stars

I liked the writing style but the book was kind of pointless。 I thought it would be more about love but it wasn’t。

Writing and achieving this ironic and conversational tone is not easy。 There is art in it。 And people like it。 To add up to his style of writing, the author notices what everyone is too polite or embarrassed to talk about and makes sure we know that。 He also amazingly describes the horrors of corporate culture and he seems to really understand the way American morality works。

Finley Barnhart

It reminded me of the Wolf of Wall street, and most of the book didn’t make sense at first, but nevertheless i kind of enjoyed it just a little。

Yk that annoying kid who always comes up with dumb controversial shit to say thinking he is soo smart thinking he is sooo smug just to get attention, that annoying little shit who wont stop making -women-are-dishwashers -jokes- because that the only way he will have women turn their heads for him?yeah if that kid was a book this would be the one。Also im starting a "in my mind " game where my mind palace is filled with assumptions abt parallel book endings and about the authors and it goes like th Yk that annoying kid who always comes up with dumb controversial shit to say thinking he is soo smart thinking he is sooo smug just to get attention, that annoying little shit who wont stop making -women-are-dishwashers -jokes- because that the only way he will have women turn their heads for him?yeah if that kid was a book this would be the one。Also im starting a "in my mind " game where my mind palace is filled with assumptions abt parallel book endings and about the authors and it goes like this:in my mind the author of this book is an insecure, frustrated virgin filled with fantasies he can never fulfill so naturally the poor baby blames women for it:( 。。。more

Are you kidding me?? I thought this would have some oldboy -esque plot twist, I mean the author does say early on that he pays for his actions。 But instead THATS how he pays for all of that?? The first half of the book was entertaining but the second half dragged on。 Still mad about the climax selling this book to anyone who wants it。

The story on the blurb holds promise。The actual story does not。 It starts off okay and then it just drags in from the middle to the end。

who compared this to f。 scott fitzgerald because they were wrong and i hate them and it’s personal。 i think that i am getting more upset after reading five star reviews of this books who preach that anyone who hates this book has Never Been Hurt Before or that they don’t Understand You Aren’t Meant To Like The Main Character。 politely shut up。

theo

i like the style of narration。 fun to read。 bit boring in the middle but the book is different from what i usually read so it’s interesting enough。

Aubrey O’Dea

soooo good。 first 5/5

He’s just got a fat victim complex

I honestly want to give this two stars。 I do not like this book。 The narrator - a shining example of an unreliable narrator if I've ever read one - is unlikeable, unrelatable, and unsympathetic。 His story is scattered。 His moods change faster than a lightning bolt。 But something made me keep turning the pages。 I didn't care what happened to him, because I don't believe what happened to him。 But I kept turning the pages。 I wasn't rooting for Aisling, because I don't truly know who Aisling is; all I honestly want to give this two stars。 I do not like this book。 The narrator - a shining example of an unreliable narrator if I've ever read one - is unlikeable, unrelatable, and unsympathetic。 His story is scattered。 His moods change faster than a lightning bolt。 But something made me keep turning the pages。 I didn't care what happened to him, because I don't believe what happened to him。 But I kept turning the pages。 I wasn't rooting for Aisling, because I don't truly know who Aisling is; all I have is his word。 But I kept turning the pages。 None of my feelings changed as I read; if anything, they intensified。 But I kept turning the pages。 There is no victory or comeuppance。 There's no true conflict, so there's no true resolution。 But I kept turning the pages。 Because of that fact, I had to bump it up to three stars, because if a book can do that to me, it's doing *something* right。 。。。more

To even call this book substandard would be a gross overstatement from my part。

I don't think I've hated two characters in a story more than I hate our protagonist and the woman he falls for。It's bleak, mean and heartless at times。 You spend the first 2/3 of the book waiting for comeuppance and then when it comes - and boy does it - it seems far too much。I finished this in fits and starts。 Putting it down to clear the taste of it out of my mouth。 So uncomfortable was I but also unable to stop reading。 I don't think I've hated two characters in a story more than I hate our protagonist and the woman he falls for。It's bleak, mean and heartless at times。 You spend the first 2/3 of the book waiting for comeuppance and then when it comes - and boy does it - it seems far too much。I finished this in fits and starts。 Putting it down to clear the taste of it out of my mouth。 So uncomfortable was I but also unable to stop reading。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This was a really good book。 He did like to ramble a lot about his job which I get, I ramble too and it was probably necessary to know。 I also do think he got what he deserved, I'd say he's even now, the scales balanced out。 I feel bad for him and what she did but I feel horrible for those girls he hurt as well。 Lowkey was thinking the heartbreaking was going to be worse but I read fantasy so Im used to big ass heart break and betrayal。 This was a really good book。 He did like to ramble a lot about his job which I get, I ramble too and it was probably necessary to know。 I also do think he got what he deserved, I'd say he's even now, the scales balanced out。 I feel bad for him and what she did but I feel horrible for those girls he hurt as well。 Lowkey was thinking the heartbreaking was going to be worse but I read fantasy so Im used to big ass heart break and betrayal。 。。。more

this was really just a straight up bad book。 horrible, cringy writing, a pretentious, delusional author, and a weird plot that isn’t even about his manipulation of women (which lasts like 40 pages btw)。 literally 2/3 of this book was just him complaining about his life and how cold and unpleasant it is where he lives

Sara Drou

aaaahhhh it catches your interest the first few pages, but that’s it, just the first few pages, literally。
