Summary

Just one line from the short story says it all: "Presently I heard a slight groan, and I knew it was a groan of mortal terror 。。 the low stifled sound that arises from the bottom of the soul。" A man confronts himself and an unknown listener with his desire to murder an old man。 Is it his father? Is the man mad? Is he in jail or an institution? A psychological thriller with many more questions than answers。

So, originally I had to read this for school, and of course, I have read so many other things by Edgar Allan Poe, so when I heard we were reading this I ran to the nearest bookstore and got it。 I read it so fast。 Even though this is a short story I really recommend it and all of Edgar Allan Poe's other books。 This book can just take up some time if you don't know what to do。Stay safe, get vaccinated, and read!:) So, originally I had to read this for school, and of course, I have read so many other things by Edgar Allan Poe, so when I heard we were reading this I ran to the nearest bookstore and got it。 I read it so fast。 Even though this is a short story I really recommend it and all of Edgar Allan Poe's other books。 This book can just take up some time if you don't know what to do。Stay safe, get vaccinated, and read!:) 。。。more

i technically only read ‘the tell-tale heart’ and not the other short stories in this book, because i read it quickly whilst sitting in foyles so that i wouldn’t have to pay for it lol。but it’s a fascinating story and the murderer lowkey reminds me of perry from ‘in cold blood’, because of the way he exclaims his admiration and love for his victim, yet he kills him nonetheless。i would like to read more of edgar allan poe’s work—perhaps even the other short stories that i didn’t get round to, whe i technically only read ‘the tell-tale heart’ and not the other short stories in this book, because i read it quickly whilst sitting in foyles so that i wouldn’t have to pay for it lol。but it’s a fascinating story and the murderer lowkey reminds me of perry from ‘in cold blood’, because of the way he exclaims his admiration and love for his victim, yet he kills him nonetheless。i would like to read more of edgar allan poe’s work—perhaps even the other short stories that i didn’t get round to, when speed-reading in foyles。 。。。more

This story was fascinating! I love the dark style of Poe's writing, and in particular the insight into the mind of a murderer。 Poe's willingness to be absolutely evil and creepy never ceases to bring me pleasure。 This story was fascinating! Though I had read this as part of a short story collection in the late 90's, I read the original version now。I read The Black Cat a few months back and this had definite similarities to it。 I preferred that over this。 While I really liked the story, I would have liked it to be a bit longer。 Though I had read this as part of a short story collection in the late 90's, I read the original version now。I read The Black Cat a few months back and this had definite similarities to it。 I preferred that over this。 While I really liked the story, I would have liked it to be a bit longer。 。。。more

A collection of dark tales that would be perfect for a stormy winters night。 Poe clearly enjoyed writing them as the language is rich, indulgent and exaggerated, that if the stories had been any longer would be a turn off。 It’s not quite horror, but definitely chilling and creepy。 You have been warned。

Dark and heart-throbbing。 Poe is great at showing the dark side of the human mind and heart。 He masterfully sets the right atmosphere that puts the reader in the heart of the story and evoke the right feeling。

Poe’s short stories are a must read。 Took me a while to finish the very humble three in this collection but were definitely worth the while。

I read this in my english lit class when I was 16 and remember really liking it。 I was curious if I still would enjoy this story so I decided to read it again (6 years later)。。。 I did!

Such a great short story。 The writing is just perfect。 It was a treat to read it again。 I forgot how well Poe was able to capture the madness within。 I decided to finally explore Edgar Allan Poe properly only because Stephen King mentions him or makes a reference to one of his stories, all the time。 Even after the first short story I can already see his influence on King and so many other creators in this genre。 Both in literature and film。

Ironijos kupina novelė apie beprotį bandantį įtikinti skaitytoją, jog jis nėra beprotis。 O, bet, tačiau。 Nuostabi novelė, aktuali šiandieninių kriminalinių dokumentikų kontekste。

i love how the narrator tries to convince you of his sanity with even more insane argumentation

A great classic, along with two other stories that I had not read before。 It sets a truly gothic mood。
