I like RPGs where the setting is really strong and preferably intertwined with the rules。 Warhammer Fantasy comes to mind, as does Star Wars。 I generally can't summon much enthusiasm for generic systems even though I recognise they can lead to some awesome campaigns。 The strength of this book is very much the setting, and that may come as a surprise given that it's based on a series of video games。 And while I enjoyed those games a lot, I was never particularly impressed with the setting during I like RPGs where the setting is really strong and preferably intertwined with the rules。 Warhammer Fantasy comes to mind, as does Star Wars。 I generally can't summon much enthusiasm for generic systems even though I recognise they can lead to some awesome campaigns。 The strength of this book is very much the setting, and that may come as a surprise given that it's based on a series of video games。 And while I enjoyed those games a lot, I was never particularly impressed with the setting during my playthroughs。 The tabletop version of Dragon Age changes all of that。 Thedas really comes into its own here。 Stripped from the far too-modern dialogue and characterisation that plagues Bioware's creations, a wonderfully dark and heroic setting emerges that allows for a very different style of storytelling。 The setting is rich and varied but extremely cohesive。 It's developed enough to be believable but mysterious and open-ended at the same time。 And the atmosphere you get from the lore and creature descriptions is just spot on。 It's all actually a lot better than the video games in my opinion。As for the rule system, I like RPGs that are easy to learn and to teach but that offer enough variety to make encounters interesting and gives non-magic players a chance to do more than just telling the GM "I charge" and "I swing my sword"。 Dragon Age does exactly that。 It is extremely intuitive, character creation is a breeze, and thanks to the stunt system, combat is full of surprises and tactical opportunities。 The game only uses D6, which my wife felt was a bit disappointing because part of the charm of this hobby is getting to use those crazy dice。 I get that sentiment, but if that's the game's biggest flaw, it's a pretty great game。I have run some adventures for this system and it really did work as well as expected。 One criticism I hear from those more experienced with the system is that at higher levels, everyone gets so many hitpoints while damage doesn't increase as much, that combat can take too long。 There is a good solution for that, though。 Increase damage by replacing the damage dice with D8 or even D10。。。 And then you get the joy of playing with those crazy dice to boot。 。。。more

Nerd Alert! As I'm starting my own DA compaign I decided to read the core rulebook。 I love this system so far and the writing is very succinct and the examples are great。 The end of the book includes some adventures paths that help give you a jumping off point for your own adventure。 It is a densely packed 300+ pages of information, some of it being interesting lore around the Dragon Age world。 Highly recommend for those who love the game or who may be wanting to try different game systems。 Nerd Alert! This is a massive and awesome tome。 I had heard good things about the game and even it was released in the full book I couldn't resist checking it out。 Honestly I was really impressed。 First: the Dragon Age game is very much based on a D&D-like system。 It has a d20-esque core mechanic, but there are some really cool systems that make it much less of a game mastery system than Pathfinder or 3。5。 The setting is, of course, excellent。 The big complaint I have is that the GMing section is pretty wea This is a massive and awesome tome。 I had heard good things about the game and even it was released in the full book I couldn't resist checking it out。 Honestly I was really impressed。 First: the Dragon Age game is very much based on a D&D-like system。 It has a d20-esque core mechanic, but there are some really cool systems that make it much less of a game mastery system than Pathfinder or 3。5。 The setting is, of course, excellent。 The big complaint I have is that the GMing section is pretty weak on the guidance about making and balancing combat encounters。 Unlike 3。5 or 5, there's no quick way of balancing encounters which makes the whole GMing side seem like a lot of work Particularly the second adventure module in the book was exciting。 I look forward to playing。 。。。more
