Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic comes a sweeping romance with a dash of magic。

They are the Beautiful Ones, Loisail’s most notable socialites, and this spring is Nina’s chance to join their ranks, courtesy of her well-connected cousin and his calculating wife。 But the Grand Season has just begun, and already Nina’s debut has gone disastrously awry。 She has always struggled to control her telekinesis—neighbors call her the Witch of Oldhouse—and the haphazard manifestations of her powers make her the subject of malicious gossip。

When entertainer Hector Auvray arrives to town, Nina is dazzled。 A telekinetic like her, he has traveled the world performing his talents for admiring audiences。 He sees Nina not as a witch, but ripe with potential to master her power under his tutelage。 With Hector’s help, Nina’s talent blossoms, as does her love for him。

But great romances are for fairytales, and Hector is hiding a truth from Nina — and himself — that threatens to end their courtship before it truly begins。 The Beautiful Ones is a charming tale of love and betrayal, and the struggle between conformity and passion, set in a world where scandal is a razor-sharp weapon。

Not my kind of book。 A lot of petty intrigue in high society influences which made the plot a pretty predictable one。 I was upset that the telepathic powers or magic displayed weren't really utilized in the story beyond being a kind of gimic at the end。 I had such high hopes for this story since I read other books by this author and really enjoyed her writing style but the story itself was just not nearly as interesting to my personal tastes。 However I will still look happily forward to the next Not my kind of book。 A lot of petty intrigue in high society influences which made the plot a pretty predictable one。 I was upset that the telepathic powers or magic displayed weren't really utilized in the story beyond being a kind of gimic at the end。 I had such high hopes for this story since I read other books by this author and really enjoyed her writing style but the story itself was just not nearly as interesting to my personal tastes。 However I will still look happily forward to the next story she will write for all of us hungry fans! 。。。more

This is not a fast-paced book, but that is exactly what makes it special。 I was immediately drawn into the story, it was so well written。 It is about life and love, friends and family; not a new premise by any means, but here it felt new。 I read the book in two days, I couldn't put it down。 Looking forward to reading more from the author, having already enjoyed this and Mexican Gothic。 This is not a fast-paced book, but that is exactly what makes it special。 I was immediately drawn into the story, it was so well written。 It is about life and love, friends and family; not a new premise by any means, but here it felt new。 I read the book in two days, I couldn't put it down。 Looking forward to reading more from the author, having already enjoyed this and Mexican Gothic。 。。。more

This was just good? Think of Dangerous Liasons + The Age of Innocence, but without too much drama, which just leaves the boring bits。 Then incorporate magic and you just get a shoulder shrug。 Maybe I just missed something? Maybe bad timing。 I wouldn't discourage you from reading it。 I was just bored about the whole story。 This was just good? She’s one of my new favorite writers。 This was sad and lovely and not particularly fantastic but so satisfying。

This was good, not great, but since it was a re-issue I was expecting it to not be my absolute favorite。 The story focused more on romance than magic and definitely had Dangerous Liason/Age of Innocence vibes。 Perfect for SMG completists

I loved Mexican Gothic and even though the author herself warned us that this was nothing like it, I wanted to read it because I really enjoyed her writing。 I'm very happy I made this choice, I absolutely loved The Beautiful Ones。 I don't know how to describe it but it gave me Pride and Prejudice feelings and it made me feel like I did when I was 11 or 12 and reading Austen for the first time。 I loved Mexican Gothic and even though the author herself warned us that this was nothing like it, I wanted to read it because I really enjoyed her writing。 I'm very happy I made this choice, I absolutely loved The Beautiful Ones。 I don't know how to describe it but it gave me Pride and Prejudice feelings and it made me feel like I did when I was 11 or 12 and reading Austen for the first time。 。。。more

This started off really strong。 I liked the characters and was really intrigued by the story。 It was giving me a lot of Bridgerton vibes! Liked this even more than Mexican Gothic - less dramatic, and instead more restrained, beautiful storytelling and character development。

Always a good time reading Silvia Moreno Garcia! Enjoyable, magnificent writing, loved Nina and Hector! Valerie reminded me of the antagonists from Disney princess movies! She was evil and hated her so much ! I don’t think this book focused so much on the fantasy aspect, our main characters did have telekinetic abilities but the author did not include a lot of detail。 Nina did have trouble controlling her ability but was not mentioned a lot! I am not fond of romantic novels。 I picked this up as I have enjoyed the author's other books- all for different reasons as they are all so different。 This book was again different and wonderful! I was surprised that this book held my attention and I actually read it in one day- I couldn't put it down。 I think this is the magic with her books though- each one has been in a different world, in a different time and place and takes you far away from your reality which is what we are really looking I am not fond of romantic novels。 I picked this up as I have enjoyed the author's other books- all for different reasons as they are all so different。 This book was again different and wonderful! How does the author seriously play at my emotions in EVERY single one of her novels?!? I have no clue! What I do know is this book had me canceling plans so I can finish the ending! Historical Fiction with a dash of magic and a very complicated romance! I really enjoyed this!!

If Jane Austen and Emily Bronte got together to write a book set in late 17th century Mexico, this is the book they'd write。 Society, romance, revenge, and a little bit of magic, all written in Silvia Moreno-Garcia's beautifully straightforward and innocent style。 If you're a fan of Mexican Gothic (which is more of a gothic mystery) and Gods of Jade and Shadow (which is more of an odyssey/adventure) know that this book is much more a character study than these previous books。 If you like charact If Jane Austen and Emily Bronte got together to write a book set in late 17th century Mexico, this is the book they'd write。 Society, romance, revenge, and a little bit of magic, all written in Silvia Moreno-Garcia's beautifully straightforward and innocent style。 If you're a fan of Mexican Gothic (which is more of a gothic mystery) and Gods of Jade and Shadow (which is more of an odyssey/adventure) know that this book is much more a character study than these previous books。 If you like character development, social strategy, and a struggle between innocence and cynicism--not to mention great writing--then this is a book you won't want to miss。 。。。more

The title and the blurb on the back were definitely misleading。 I thought magical powers/telekinesis would play a bigger role than it actually did。 It felt very much like Wuthering Heights or something by Jane Austen。 It was readable, but this definitely isn’t something I’m going to rave about。

I received this book from NetGalley。 I requested it because I love how the author writes。 I like how she doesn’t write for one genre。 This one is a magic realism/romance。 One allusionist meets another, and there is a love triangle and jealousy involved。

I loved this book! As I sit here trying to form a review I am stumped as to what to write。 This is not my usual genre to go to, a love triangle romance, yet I enjoyed it so thoroughly and could not wait to pick it up again day after day。 This is my second book by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and she seems to just pulls me in with her storytelling。 I loved the character development and the pessimistic view on love through the book until the redeeming end。 Valerie is a nasty character that you can still s I loved this book! 3。5。 Reminds me of Dangerous Liaisons, with a former couple and the ingenue that gets caught up in all the drama and machinations。 Some parts kind of dragged, and I would have preferred the telekinesis bits to play a more significant role。 Why were Hector and Nina the only ones who could do it? To prove they were kindred spirits? I guess I was expecting more world-building after reading Gods of Jade and Shadow and Mexican Gothic。 That said, the drama and the characters were compelling。 Valérie w 3。5。 Reminds me of Dangerous Liaisons, with a former couple and the ingenue that gets caught up in all the drama and machinations。 Some parts kind of dragged, and I would have preferred the telekinesis bits to play a more significant role。 Why were Hector and Nina the only ones who could do it? 4。5 …。。 4。75??This was so beautifully written。 It’s definitely a slow, character driven book - this is NOT going to be for some people, but I really really enjoyed it。 I don’t read a lot of classics but this definitely gave me Jane Austen/The Great Gatsby-esque vibes。 I loved the growth of the characters (and the descent into madness for one character)。 I also really liked the very slight magic in this, it wasn’t the main part of the story but it was a nice addition。

I received a copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review, but I didn’t get a chance to read it until now。 (And because it’s me, I of course had to buy it in at least 2 other formats to make sure I’ve covered all the bases and permutations。) So, this is technically a review of the audiobook as I ended up listening to it。 This was gorgeously written, and it has confirmed Moreno-Garcia as an auto-buy author for me。 She has a deft turn of phrase and sympathetic characterisation even fo I received a copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review, but I didn’t get a chance to read it until now。 (And because it’s me, I of course had to buy it in at least 2 other formats to make sure I’ve covered all the bases and permutations。) So, this is technically a review of the audiobook as I ended up listening to it。 This was gorgeously written, and it has confirmed Moreno-Garcia as an auto-buy author for me。 She has a deft turn of phrase and sympathetic characterisation even for the villains (so much so that I had trouble initially working out who the villain was meant to be, and then spent a few chapters thinking “ok well, I should have seen that coming”)。 I LOVED the character of Nina, who is clever and resourceful and quite capable of saving herself, thank you。 I liked the world that Moreno-Garcia shows us, where mind-talents go hand in hand with naturalism and where family truly is the most important thing。 The reason I didn’t end up giving this 5* is because I could t quite forgive Hector。 I think I’m going to be leading the hashtag Nina Deserves Better because my god, that girl is messed around by everyone around her。 (There are two particular conversations which take place about a letter - I won’t spoil the details - which had me actually getting up to pace because I was so agitated over them。) Yes, I wanted Nina to have a happily ever after, and yes, I was impressed at how rounded and sympathetic a character she was, and YES, I felt sorry for Hector。。。 but I still felt that he deserved a good slap or twenty。 (And Luke? Don’t get me started on Luke。 And Valerie? I’m going to go yell at the void because of how angry I still am about her。) This is very much a romance, and perhaps even a comedy of manners (is that the right term?) albeit one with some truly villainous villains。 We get our happy ending, and the bad guys get their just desserts, but。。。 Hashtag Nina Deserves Better。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I’m a little turned off that Hector was able to follow through with his plans to pursue Válerie, and was still pained as an honorable gentleman, but his redemption arc is sweet。 The way Válerie was written is amazing。 I’ve never seen anyone able to encase such a vile personality in such absolute decorum and beauty。 Still a very good read and I enjoy the author’s work。 I’ve already purchased another book from the author。

Originally I was thinking 3。5 for this book, but part 2 was so good I bumped it up。 The first half just has awful pacing and I really think there could have been 75 less pages and not much of the plot/story would have been lost。

Jen

Rounded up from 2。5 stars。 I was distinctly underwhelmed by this, possibly because I went in with such high expectations after loving Gods of Jade and Shadow and enjoying Mexican Gothic。The writing itself was good, and the overall plot was fine (and I probably would have enjoyed it in a romance novel with the sexiness kicked up a few notches), but I was kind of meh about all of the characters and very much wanted the telekinesis/fantastical elements to play a much larger role in things。
