Nach ein paar Anläufen habe ich es nicht geschafft, mit diesem Buch warm zu werden。 Anscheinend ist das bei Terry Pratchett und mir ein bisschen schwierig。 Macbest mochte ich nämlich ganz gerne。

My favorite Discworld story so far!Hollywood, er, Holy Wood, is an easy target for satire and irony, and Pratchett unleashes his full inventory here。 The local imp photography techniques have been updated to create the required number of frames per second to create the illusion of "moving pictures。" (Just a side note。。。 back in 1969 when I first arrived at the Univ of Colorado, I was in an intro tour of the campus。 One stop was Norlin Library。 The head librarian showed us the massive card catalo My favorite Discworld story so far!Hollywood, er, Holy Wood, is an easy target for satire and irony, and Pratchett unleashes his full inventory here。 The local imp photography techniques have been updated to create the required number of frames per second to create the illusion of "moving pictures。" (Just a side note。。。 back in 1969 when I first arrived at the Univ of Colorado, I was in an intro tour of the campus。 One stop was Norlin Library。 The head librarian showed us the massive card catalogs。 {I still wish I had a way to own one。。。 more about the space than the cost。。。} He asked, "If you want to find books on filmmaking, where do you look?" Not a single one of us got it right。 "Moving pictures," was the answer。 Everything was still be catalogued under the old technology label。) Pratchett makes use of that, of course。 The making of the Discworld's first blockbuster moving picture, called "Blown Away," (think about that for a moment) involves hundreds of extras, a thousand elephants, and the accidental awaking of ancient demons。 Lots of fun and great jokes for film folks。 。。。more

I always thing it's clever how Sir Terry makes references to things from our world on the Disc。 They're slantwise, but recognizable。 Discworld makes the best sarcastic commentary on modern life。 I always thing it's clever how Sir Terry makes references to things from our world on the Disc。 They're slantwise, but recognizable。 Discworld makes the best sarcastic commentary on modern life。 。。。more

Definitely not my cup of tea。 Hate Hollywood with a red hot passion, don't need a parody of how it works。 Was only interested in Detritus's origin story, but there wasn't much there。 Definitely not my cup of tea。 Hate Hollywood with a red hot passion, don't need a parody of how it works。 Was only interested in Detritus's origin story, but there wasn't much there。 。。。more

That was a long uphill battle。 After I started this book, I read two other books and six short stories because I was that disinterested in the plot。 Maybe you can't put a good book down, but in this case, I couldn't pick a so-so book up。 This was the worst (maybe not THE WORST) book in the series so far。The first three-quarters were a slow slog。 All the new characters were set-up to be interesting, but were only roughly sketched in before character development stopped。 CMOT Dibbler wasn't a very That was a long uphill battle。 After I started this book, I read two other books and six short stories because I was that disinterested in the plot。 Maybe you can't put a good book down, but in this case, I couldn't pick a so-so book up。 This was the worst (maybe not THE WORST) book in the series so far。The first three-quarters were a slow slog。 All the new characters were set-up to be interesting, but were only roughly sketched in before character development stopped。 CMOT Dibbler wasn't a very interesting character when he was first introduced in the previous book, so I can't understand why Pratchett brought him back to be the main comic foil in this book, because he wasn't terribly funny or interesting。For the main part of the book I think I laughed only once。 Things only started to get good (and funny) when the attack of the 50-foot woman happened。 There were laughs galore and the long gestating plot burst forward。 Unfortunately the overlong denouement wasn't as much fun either。 For all the build-up with the 1000 elephants, I would have expected something spectacular in the story's climax instead of a sorry little joke at the end。 It was still worth the price of admission, but only just。。。 。。。more

One of the best of the many excellent Discworld novels。 So many references to 'Hollywood' ('Holy Wood' in the book) that you lose track of them。 One of the best of the many excellent Discworld novels。 So many references to 'Hollywood' ('Holy Wood' in the book) that you lose track of them。 。。。more

The only reason I didn’t give up halfway through is because I’m determined to read the entire Discworld series。 The new characters were either flat or irritating, the plot was meh, and the constant pop culture references got old really quickly。

I enjoyed this book a lot more than my rating may seem, but I don't think its particularly good, I just enjoyed the subject a lot more。 I loved the roundworld references and felt this is exactly where its more appropriate, whereas in other books I always find it a lot more distracting。 There's still whole chunks of the book I found entirely pointless though, the whole wizard side of it felt entirely unnecessary and would have trimmed the book down more, which is the other problem I think。 It's a I enjoyed this book a lot more than my rating may seem, but I don't think its particularly good, I just enjoyed the subject a lot more。 I loved the roundworld references and felt this is exactly where its more appropriate, whereas in other books I always find it a lot more distracting。 There's still whole chunks of the book I found entirely pointless though, the whole wizard side of it felt entirely unnecessary and would have trimmed the book down more, which is the other problem I think。 It's a little too long for its own good, a bit of brevity would not have gone amiss。 Really fun, especially if you love movies, and I'm sure there's references I missed。 Loved one of the new characters, but again, I feel like I'll just never see 'm again which is always kind of a problem to me is you get just enough to get into a character but they never go anywhere in this series。 Which is fine, but I just find it dissapointing。 。。。more

The only discworld book I never bothered to completely finish。 You can't describe the main character as "terminally lazy" in the beginning of the book and then have him act as the plot investigator throughout the rest。 Way too many, wink-nudge-nudge unfunny jokes at Hollywood and movies。 The only discworld book I never bothered to completely finish。 You can't describe the main character as "terminally lazy" in the beginning of the book and then have him act as the plot investigator throughout the rest。 Way too many, wink-nudge-nudge unfunny jokes at Hollywood and movies。 。。。more

Although I didn't enjoy this book as much as other Discworld novels, I stil found it a fun read with plenty of opportunities for a good chuckle。 I think I enjoyed it less because the story felt a bit more drawn out than others but I did really enjoy getting to know Gaspode and Victor。 Although I didn't enjoy this book as much as other Discworld novels, I stil found it a fun read with plenty of opportunities for a good chuckle。 I think I enjoyed it less because the story felt a bit more drawn out than others but I did really enjoy getting to know Gaspode and Victor。 。。。more

Considered one of the more mediocre Discworld novels – and with good reason。 Moving Pictures takes on Lovecraftian horror and Hollywood – neither of which really works and which certainly don't work together。 The Cthulhu mythos could've be fertile ground for Pratchett in a better Discworld novel, but bringing the modern technologies of Hollywood film-making into the Disc doesn't really work。 It is made even worse by the fact it is done without purpose: there is no satirical or compelling comedic Considered one of the more mediocre Discworld novels – and with good reason。 Moving Pictures takes on Lovecraftian horror and Hollywood – neither of which really works and which certainly don't work together。 The Cthulhu mythos could've be fertile ground for Pratchett in a better Discworld novel, but bringing the modern technologies of Hollywood film-making into the Disc doesn't really work。 It is made even worse by the fact it is done without purpose: there is no satirical or compelling comedic reason to use Hollywood for Disc material, and the jokes are weak and directionless。The characters lack both personality and the reader's interest, and nothing happens plot-wise until the very end。 There are just some vague hints as to a sleeping evil and a lot of laborious transmogrifications of silver-screen hallmarks。 Aside from one good joke (the subverted Hachi myth on page 168) and one good line ("。。。 inside every old person is a young person wondering what happened" (pg。 262)), there's little to bolster your resolve in getting through this one。 Which is a shame, because you need it。 。。。more

Absolutely Brilliant。 What a fantastic send-up of the golden age of Hollywood as well as the toxicity (some)。

Classic Pratchett as he skewers Hollywood perfectly in this book。 Despite this I haven't given it 5 stars as something I can't put my finger on。 Not sure if it is the closeness with which he mimics Hollywood personalities or the way it almost becomes a horror story。 However still a great fun read and worth 4 stars Classic Pratchett as he skewers Hollywood perfectly in this book。 Despite this I haven't given it 5 stars as something I can't put my finger on。 Not sure if it is the closeness with which he mimics Hollywood personalities or the way it almost becomes a horror story。 However still a great fun read and worth 4 stars 。。。more

A solid chapter in the Discworld series, it relies perhaps a bit too heavily on the reader's knowledge of "old Hollywood" (sorry, Holy Wood)。 As such, it feels a bit removed from the modern iteration of film and its focus on special effects, sound, and action films。 That said, there are a number of wonderful new characters and guest appearances from many beloved Morporkians and if you do know quite a bit about Old Hollywood, you'll certainly enjoy the many, many, many in-jokes and references。 A A solid chapter in the Discworld series, it relies perhaps a bit too heavily on the reader's knowledge of "old Hollywood" (sorry, Holy Wood)。 As such, it feels a bit removed from the modern iteration of film and its focus on special effects, sound, and action films。 That said, there are a number of wonderful new characters and guest appearances from many beloved Morporkians and if you do know quite a bit about Old Hollywood, you'll certainly enjoy the many, many, many in-jokes and references。 A wonderful book to read just around Oscar season when the "spirit" of Old Hollywood is evoked most strongly。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book very much, my first time reading anything by Terry Pratchett and certainly not my last。 It took a while for me to warm up to it but the book from the last quarter onwards was top notch。 A very fun plot, some humourous reference and parody and some great characters。 I look forward to reading the next book in this Industrial Revolution branch of Discworld。
