Summary

'Be a MAN in the City Watch! The City Watch needs MEN!'

But what it's got includes Corporal Carrot (technically a dwarf), Lance-constable Cuddy (really a dwarf), Lance-constable Detritus (a troll), Lance-constable Angua (a woman 。。。 most of the time) and Corporal Nobbs (disqualified from the human race for shoving)。

And they need all the help they can get。 Because they've only got 24 hours to clean up the town and this is Ankh-Morpork we're talking about。。。

Guns don't kill people, but gonnes make people kill people。 Which is good, because then you can ban the damn things。 Vimes has a lower profile in this one, which is a shame, and Carrot comes front and center, and you get Angua's origin story。 Unfortunately, I have to go back to 'Moving Pictures' to get Detritus's origin story, but he's a fabulous character。 I had just started 'Sourcery', and now I have to put it down for a bit。 Guns don't kill people, but gonnes make people kill people。 Which is good, because then you can ban the damn things。 Vimes has a lower profile in this one, which is a shame, and Carrot comes front and center, and you get Angua's origin story。 Unfortunately, I have to go back to 'Moving Pictures' to get Detritus's origin story, but he's a fabulous character。 I had just started 'Sourcery', and now I have to put it down for a bit。 。。。more

Not as laugh out loud funny as some of the others。 Felt almost like a transitional book, building up the basics of Sam Vimes and Carrot and The Watch so that they can really shine later。 Maybe I feel that way because I've read many of the later books already。 Had a strange dog sub plot thrown in near the end too。 Despite these complaints, I still liked it a lot。 Not as laugh out loud funny as some of the others。 Felt almost like a transitional book, building up the basics of Sam Vimes and Carrot and The Watch so that they can really shine later。 Maybe I feel that way because I've read many of the later books already。 Had a strange dog sub plot thrown in near the end too。 Despite these complaints, I still liked it a lot。 。。。more

This was definitely one of the early Pratchetts。 The Watch only has Vimes, Colon, Nobby, and Carrot at the start! This is the one where we meet Angua and Detritus, as well as Queen Molly and Downey and Drumknott。 The characters hadn’t completely come into their own yet。

I love Terry Pratchett and Sam Vimes is one of my favorite characters。 The fact the the gonne takes people over and whispers in their ear, demanding to be used, is a great way of explaining the violence we see in our own world。

4。5I tried to read Pratchett a long time ago and just couldn't understand why people loved his books。 But, on chatting to a friend, and Pratchett lover I took her opinion on where to start - was the beginning the right place? She categorically said no, that's where I went wrong, and posted me this one。And wasn't she right! The characters were well drawn, the play on words at times had me chuckling away to myself and I was sucked into this fabulous world and city。 I thought the central themes of 4。5I tried to read Pratchett a long time ago and just couldn't understand why people loved his books。 But, on chatting to a friend, and Pratchett lover I took her opinion on where to start - was the beginning the right place? Just brilliant! The Vimes economic theory of boots is deep yet fun at another level。 Book is full of such gems。 Deals with topics which are still so relevant, but in a manner that is subtle and fun!Must read。

Pratchett tackles the topic of diversity, quota, racism and organising a society like no other, incorporating all of it in a murder mystery in Ankh Morpork。 I love the way he has developped the characters in this one, allowing them to grow into the most lovely beings。

Every time I read a Discworld novel I'm blown away by the care Terry Pratchett took in making something so hilariously philosophical。 Men at Arms has the added benefit of sporting the best recurring cast I've seen so far in this crazy universe。 Every time I read a Discworld novel I'm blown away by the care Terry Pratchett took in making something so hilariously philosophical。 Men at Arms has the added benefit of sporting the best recurring cast I've seen so far in this crazy universe。 。。。more
