Summary

From acclaimed author Mindee Arnett comes the thrilling conclusion of the stunningly epic, action-packed fantasy adventure that’s been called “a page-turning blend of monsters, magic, and romance” by Susan Dennard, the New York Times bestselling author of Truthwitch。

They call her the Wilder Queen。 It’s a title given to Kate Brighton for her role in the war between the wilder rebellion and the Rimish empire。 It’s a title that was hard earned: Kate may have saved her people, but many were lost in the conflict, immortalized in the tattoos of fire that grace her arms。

And it’s a title that Kate never wanted。 The rebellion may have made a home for themselves in a country that wants to cast them out, but the peace will never be safe while Edwin, the illegitimate king of Rime, sits upon its throne。 And for that, the Wilder Queen must keep hers。

Now war is brewing once again。 Kate and her allies receive word of a threat to their ambassador in the Rimish capital; meanwhile, across the channel in Seva, an army is being assembled to conquer Rime—and a prisoner slave named Clash may hold the key to ending the conflict once and for all。

As enemies close in on Kate and Clash from all sides, they must choose where their loyalties lie—with their people, with their loved ones, or with themselves。

The epic story that began with Onyx & Ivory comes to a stunning conclusion as acclaimed author Mindee Arnett throws readers into a beautiful, terrifying world poised on a razor’s edge in its struggle for survival。

I actually had to take a break during this book because I was having such strong deja vu in the cave/planning scenes and I just could not place it, it drove me nuts。 The first book is great, I loved it, but this one went in an unexpected preachy/moralistic direction that I just couldn't love。 I was extremely frustrated that the characters would all demand Kate use her sway at the drop of the hat then call her a monster for doing just that。 It's ridiculous to have the supporting cast call Kate a I actually had to take a break during this book because I was having such strong deja vu in the cave/planning scenes and I just could not place it, it drove me nuts。 The first book is great, I loved it, but this one went in an unexpected preachy/moralistic direction that I just couldn't love。 I was extremely frustrated that the characters would all demand Kate use her sway at the drop of the hat then call her a monster for doing just that。 It's ridiculous to have the supporting cast call Kate a monster for using it on them, but then immediately ask her to use it on someone else because they want something or the other person is the "enemy" … so what she used it on her friends to keep them safe? So would literally anyone if they had the magical means to get shit done。 It was a heavy-handed, hypocritical, and holier than thou stance to take in order to set up Kate to have a morality crisis on page。 Saying it's ok to use it on some people who are perceived as the enemy but not on me without challenging that assertion on page, is not the lesson about power they think it is。 It felt messy, seeing the author trying to work through the ethics of magical mind control on the page instead of having it figured out beforehand。 I liked a lot of this book, but there was just enough that I didn't like to bring me down。OH AND ALSO, (view spoiler)[ what purpose did Dal's death serve????? Seriously, it was unnecessary to kill him off and then just move on after a quick post-battle funeral。 If you want to kill someone to show the tragedy of war, kill Bonner's magical medic gf, not half of your secondary couple。 Call me crazy, but I don't think it's trite to give your characters some happiness instead of just killing someone, especially after the events of these two books。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I really like duologies because they're just short enough to keep me interested and not so short that nothing is explained。 I did start to get a little lost toward the final third of the book, but at the end the story picked up again。 I liked Kate a lot less in this book, the other characters were pointing out her flaws and she would just get angry even though they were right。 and I really didn't like the way she reacted to both hearing about and meeting Eravis, it was gross and annoying。I felt I really like duologies because they're just short enough to keep me interested and not so short that nothing is explained。 I did start to get a little lost toward the final third of the book, but at the end the story picked up again。 I liked Kate a lot less in this book, the other characters were pointing out her flaws and she would just get angry even though they were right。 and I really didn't like the way she reacted to both hearing about and meeting Eravis, it was gross and annoying。I felt like this series and the magic system was unique and I liked most of the characters, I liked the side characters way more than the mains though。 I also liked that everything didn't end *quite* perfectly and there was a little angsty moment at the end which was hurtful but also give me all the angst please。overall, pretty fun times and would love to read another book about Signe one day 3。5 stars 。。。more

I wonder if I would have enjoyed this more had I read it immediately after finishing the first as I had originally intended。 Sadly I found a lot of the first part quite predictable and also a bit too political for me so kept skipping ahead and having to force myself to go back and read properly。 I did enjoy the second half a lot more and it was an incredibly easy and quick read despite it being quite dark in nature。 Overall I'm glad I read it but I didn't get the same feeling as I did with the f I wonder if I would have enjoyed this more had I read it immediately after finishing the first as I had originally intended。 Sadly I found a lot of the first part quite predictable and also a bit too political for me so kept skipping ahead and having to force myself to go back and read properly。 I did enjoy the second half a lot more and it was an incredibly easy and quick read despite it being quite dark in nature。 Overall I'm glad I read it but I didn't get the same feeling as I did with the first。 。。。more

I really liked this series as a whole but did find it lacking in some aspects。 One of my major complaints is that this series is really fast paced。 I feel like this could have easily been made into at least a trilogy if the author would have taken more time with the characters’ back stories。 I also wish the author focused more on Kate’s history, some of her runs she did, and how she met up with her friends。 The character growth and plot developed so quickly it felt very discordant。 I also felt l I really liked this series as a whole but did find it lacking in some aspects。 One of my major complaints is that this series is really fast paced。 I feel like this could have easily been made into at least a trilogy if the author would have taken more time with the characters’ back stories。 I also wish the author focused more on Kate’s history, some of her runs she did, and how she met up with her friends。 The character growth and plot developed so quickly it felt very discordant。 I also felt like this book was very similar to another series I read but can’t remember the name of。 I did fall in love with the characters and the author did a very good job of building the connection between the reader and characters。 Overall, this series is a fun quick read if you don’t look too hard at it。 。。。more

It took me long enough to read this but I am finally finished。 I enjoyed this but i did find that some of the plot was annoying but I did enjoy the added suspense that it brought to the plot。 I didn’t like that Signe and Kate went through so many struggles with their friendship in this book and that they weren’t able to work out until nearly the end of the book。

I can’t believe the rollercoaster of events and emotions this book radiates。 It’s not often I think the second book is better than the first, but I Loved this book。 It encourages me to want to create my own story and hope for half the outcome the author managed to make seem effortless。 It is a work of magic

I cannot lie—when I started “Onyx & Ivory,” I didn’t know what I was getting myself into。 After reading book one, I HAD to buy the sequel。 “Shadow & Flame” has a rep of being “darker” than the first book。 To which I agree, but I also found myself captivated by the story。 I have enjoyed the story of Kate, Corwin, Signe, Bonner, and Dal。 Phenomenal read for me!

3。5 rounded up。 Boy was this book a rollercoaster。 To echo what other reviews are saying= this book is d。a。r。k。 Like straight from the beginning。 Unexpectedly so。 Think Game of Thrones。 You were warned! Otherwise: there were parts of this book that I really didn’t like and other times that I was so invested in the story that I feel like this deserves the round up。 Honestly though if it weren’t for the ending it would be a low three with an unhaul。 After reading this I can pretty confidently say 3。5 rounded up。 Boy was this book a rollercoaster。 To echo what other reviews are saying= this book is d。a。r。k。 Like straight from the beginning。 Unexpectedly so。 Think Game of Thrones。 You were warned! I read the first book, Onyx And Ivory over two years ago now and when I finally got to read this book I was SO HAPPY WITH IT!! Shadow And Flame was indeed a darker book compared to the first but it kept me so interested! Mindee definitely didn’t disappoint with this sequel and I had to give it a 5/5。 I loved almost every second of this book and I hope I can read more books from this author in the future!

4。5 I wasn't sitting on my own when I finished or I would have bawled for real。The first book of this duology was already very enjoyable, but this second entry was on another level。 As many other reviews point out, it's much darker than the first and the stakes that are established in Book One become even higher in Book Two。 There's a lot going on and there's never a lull in the story, but the character development also never stops。 Everyone is changed, compared to the first book, having suffer 4。5 I wasn't sitting on my own when I finished or I would have bawled for real。The first book of this duology was already very enjoyable, but this second entry was on another level。 As many other reviews point out, it's much darker than the first and the stakes that are established in Book One become even higher in Book Two。 There's a lot going on and there's never a lull in the story, but the character development also never stops。 Everyone is changed, compared to the first book, having suffered much and it's heart-breaking to see。 There's death and I really mourned for them, especially the death of a specific character towards the end。 The story ends with hope, but it's bittersweet and it doesn't feel like an 'all's well that ends well' kind of ending。Since this is not something everyone appreciates: it's worth noting there's two time-jumps at the beginning of the story。 While interesting things happen in the intervening time, I wasn't bothered by this and they serve a purpose。 I think they also allow the story to keep up the pace it has。There is, of course, romance in the book and I felt it really added something。 It isn't what drives the story, so it remains enjoyable for people who're not into that kind of plots, but it strengthens it。 And it's the connections between characters, through love/friendship/family bonds, that makes them grow and really learn from their mistakes and become better。 。。。more

3。5The first book had humor, cute banter and warm moments。 The beginning of this one was so unexpected。 It was dark and made me so angry with how Kate was being treated。 She did her best to save everyone and do the right thing, but her so called best friend was an ass。 Corwin & Kate's romance was a bit disappointing。 A lot of their conflicts weren't addressed and the ending seemed rushed。 I didn't connect to the characters as well as I did in the first book。 While, the ending was a positive one 3。5The first book had humor, cute banter and warm moments。 The beginning of this one was so unexpected。 It was dark and made me so angry with how Kate was being treated。 She did her best to save everyone and do the right thing, but her so called best friend was an ass。 Corwin & Kate's romance was a bit disappointing。 A lot of their conflicts weren't addressed and the ending seemed rushed。 I didn't connect to the characters as well as I did in the first book。 While, the ending was a positive one (considering everything), it was still a heartbreaking read。 。。。more

After a little pause while I was reading another book, I finally came back to Kate and Corwin。 The beginning of this book was awesome。 Then, after a slow down we have a nice ending full of emotions。 My heart aches for them。Like I said, the prologue definitely gave a dark vibe to this second book。 The characters faced a traumatic experience。 Everything didn't go according to their plan and the loses were high。 OMG!! This book put me in a reading block。 Although the ending was good, the beginning of the book was an absolute bore。 When Corwin and Bonner “supposedly” died, I didn’t even care。 I knew they didn’t truly die because YA books never work like that。 But the writing for Bonner in this book was horrible, all of a sudden he’s this trauma filled man who’s distant to Kate and never in the book do they give Kate and Bonner a moment to truly reunite。 The final chapter of the book doesn’t even conclude what This book put me in a reading block。 Although the ending was good, the beginning of the book was an absolute bore。 When Corwin and Bonner “supposedly” died, I didn’t even care。 I knew they didn’t truly die because YA books never work like that。 But the writing for Bonner in this book was horrible, all of a sudden he’s this trauma filled man who’s distant to Kate and never in the book do they give Kate and Bonner a moment to truly reunite。 The final chapter of the book doesn’t even conclude what Bonner will be doing for the rest of his life, he was just put into a void of mystery。 Her “Best friend” Signe was a complete ass, and although I like these because it helps give drama to the book, I hate how they made Kate apologize when Signe was just being an ass。 The overall writing of the character’s was poor, but the reasoning as to why everything happened the way it did made sense。 The author clearly took a lot of time to make sure the whole meaning made sense hence why it’s 3 stars。 This book is not the best, nor is it the worst。 。。。more

I really wanted to love this sequel, but unfortunately for me the characters just felt very alien after the year long gap between books。 I couldn’t manage to sink back into the story like I’d hoped。 A lot of people seem to love this more than the original so maybe someday I’ll attempt to read it again。
