Summary

A thrilling new Colter Shaw adventure by the master of suspense, Jeffery Deaver。

In pursuit of two young men accused of terrible hate crimes, Colter Shaw stumbles upon a clue to another mystery。 In an effort to save the life of a young woman--and possibly others--he travels to the wilderness of Washington State to investigate a mysterious organization。 Is it a community that consoles the bereaved? Or a dangerous cult under the sway of a captivating leader? As he peels back the layers of truth, Shaw finds that some people will stop at nothing to keep their secrets hidden。

All the while, Shaw must unravel an equally deadly enigma: locating and deciphering a message hidden by his father years ago, just before his death--a message that will have life-and-death consequences。

Colter is a sort of Robin Hood searcher。 He investigates and usually finds the missing person。 In this story there a 2 point agenda。 The first is to unearth his father's secrets。 His father dies many years ago and left a mystery behind。 Colter grew up on a rural compound, where the family moved to to get away from "enemies。" The second is to to investigate a cult that he believes is mind altering and guilty of murders。 Plot is contrived and sets up for a sequel。 Skippable。 Colter is a sort of Robin Hood searcher。 He investigates and usually finds the missing person。 In this story there a 2 point agenda。 The first is to unearth his father's secrets。 His father dies many years ago and left a mystery behind。 Colter grew up on a rural compound, where the family moved to to get away from "enemies。" The second is to to investigate a cult that he believes is mind altering and guilty of murders。 Plot is contrived and sets up for a sequel。 Skippable。 。。。more

I received this book from the publishers via Netgalley for a review。 The second book in the Colter Shaw series and is shaping up to be a good one。 Plenty of action and intrigue an author on top of his game

Another great book by Deaver。 Colter Shaw is the main character who is a bounty hunter of sorts 。 An investigation leads him to infiltrate a cult。 The story is riveting and never bogs down。 Ending was a little weak which is why it didn’t get 5 stars。

Not his best effort。 Usually, I can't put his books down, but this one I struggled to complete。 Not his best effort。 Usually, I can't put his books down, but this one I struggled to complete。 。。。more

By the usual thriller standards, this was fantastic。 Maybe I should have given it five stars。 But, like the first Colter Shaw novel, it just wasn’t as gripping and terrifying as I know Jeffery Deaver can be。 Strongly recommended for action/adventure thriller fans。 It was clear that the cult leader was written with Trump in mind, which was the most skin-crawling part of the book。 Trigger warning/TW: cult, suicide。

。。。more

New main character but unfortunately spends less couple of chapters introducing the next book in the series。 Took away from the impact of ending book number two

I've been reading Jeffery Deaver for years so I always know when I read his latest work that it will be gripping, fast-paced, disturbing (for multitudes of reasons), and most importantly smart。 I should also add that Lincoln Rhyme is one of my favorite characters, not just of thrillers by Deaver but of literary characters in general。 With these two facts at the back of my mind when I started The Goodbye Man I knew that I would enjoy it even if Colter Shaw is of course not Lincoln Rhyme but still I've been reading Jeffery Deaver for years so I always know when I read his latest work that it will be gripping, fast-paced, disturbing (for multitudes of reasons), and most importantly smart。 I should also add that Lincoln Rhyme is one of my favorite characters, not just of thrillers by Deaver but of literary characters in general。 With these two facts at the back of my mind when I started The Goodbye Man I knew that I would enjoy it even if Colter Shaw is of course not Lincoln Rhyme but still a compelling character。 What happened next, however, was completely unexpected。 The Goodbye Man ended up becoming my new favorite Jeffery Deaver book of all time and that is not fake news。 I personally found this to be his most disturbing thriller ever (for multitudes of reasons) but simultaneously I found it to be darkly funny in a rather therapeutic way (even if that feeling it evoked was also associated with anger and disgust)。 It's a very unique feeling to find oneself laughing hysterically while also feeling a deep dread that causes one to break out in a cold sweat as the reader feels his or her blood chill; I felt this sensation the entire time I was reading The Goodbye Man。 Also, it's probably obvious that I am a huge Britney Spears fan so the choice to use Toxics (capital T every time) ironically as a collective noun to refer to anyone who is opposed to the poisonous antagonist is something I chose to associate with the song Toxic and every time the word appeared in the text (which was often) I found it rather amusing and it made me smile。 If you like protest literature in the guise of a thriller The Goodbye Man is a must-read and one that you will not want to say goodbye to when it is finished。 。。。more

I enjoy the author Jeffrey Deaver and I really like the new character Colter Shaw。 The second book in this series is just as exciting as the first。 Jeffery Deaver has done a brilliant job of creating an underlying menace throughout this novel。 Drawing readers back to the psychology of cults and the power of cult leaders such as Manson and groups such as the Aryan Nation, the way in which they manipulate others, feeding on fear, grief, the need for love and acceptance, or just plain hatred in ord I enjoy the author Jeffrey Deaver and I really like the new character Colter Shaw。 The second book in this series is just as exciting as the first。 Jeffery Deaver has done a brilliant job of creating an underlying menace throughout this novel。 Drawing readers back to the psychology of cults and the power of cult leaders such as Manson and groups such as the Aryan Nation, the way in which they manipulate others, feeding on fear, grief, the need for love and acceptance, or just plain hatred in order to get what they want from followers。 The Osiris Foundation, in this case, is a particularly nasty and insidious group, preying on those who have hit rock bottom through grief or personal tragedy and offering them a path to a better future … Of course there is a financial incentive for the leader to help them on their way and the seedy Master Eli is a perfectly awful character, flanked by a wealth of equally evil characters, especially his right hand man Hugh。 While Master Eli uses charm and personality to almost woo his followers, Hugh uses threats, violence and worse to control any dissenters。 Step by step Colter manages to expose to the reader, and the other followers, the much darker side of the seemingly positive environment they have turned too。 It’s a masterclass in smoke and mirrors, manipulation and grooming, and enough to make your skin crawl。The plot twists and resolution, plus the lead in to the next episode, are done so well that you'll have trouble putting this book down until you've finished 。。。more

A rambling tale, especially late in the novel when it turns into an entirely different story。 Very strange construction。

This took me several months to finish。 I think the subject matter didn't interest me much。 Or maybe it's the pacing。 He's my favorite author because of his crime fictions, where, aside from his devilish plot twists, the protagonists are working against the clock to chase and stop the antagonists, but there wasn't that feeling in this book。 Took me a few months to get through half the book, then finished the last half in just a couple of days because the boring part was over。 Hopefully the last b This took me several months to finish。 I think the subject matter didn't interest me much。 Or maybe it's the pacing。 He's my favorite author because of his crime fictions, where, aside from his devilish plot twists, the protagonists are working against the clock to chase and stop the antagonists, but there wasn't that feeling in this book。 Took me a few months to get through half the book, then finished the last half in just a couple of days because the boring part was over。 Hopefully the last book in the trilogy is more interesting。 。。。more

Colter Shaw is a fascinating character--a man trained as a survivalist and tracker who earns his living collecting rewards for finding missing people, but who is just as likely to forego the reward if the person offering it is distraught。 I've been a fan of Jeffery Deaver for a long, long time。 His plots can be devious, but they are always intriguing and fun to read。 His Colter Shaw novels are no exception to that rule and I will continue reading them as long as he keeps up the great writing。 Colter Shaw is a fascinating character--a man trained as a survivalist and tracker who earns his living collecting rewards for finding missing people, but who is just as likely to forego the reward if the person offering it is distraught。 I've been a fan of Jeffery Deaver for a long, long time。 His plots can be devious, but they are always intriguing and fun to read。 His Colter Shaw novels are no exception to that rule and I will continue reading them as long as he keeps up the great writing。 。。。more

Not thrilled。 What is wrong with characters these days and why are they all so boringly predictable?

If this author in the first 2 books of this series is not taking shots at Trump, his enablers and his cult like followers, then it sure is quite a coincidence。 This book is actually about a cult and it's leader says the word gorgeous instead of beautiful。 Hmmm。 I am looking forward to the next book where Colter now takes up the task his father died for trying to bring to justice。 If this author in the first 2 books of this series is not taking shots at Trump, his enablers and his cult like followers, then it sure is quite a coincidence。 This book is actually about a cult and it's leader says the word gorgeous instead of beautiful。 Hmmm。 I am looking forward to the next book where Colter now takes up the task his father died for trying to bring to justice。 。。。more

Colter Shaw is on the trail of two young men accused of a hate crime。 When he catches them, one of them jumps off a cliff leaving Shaw wondering what the story is。 To find out, he must put himself right into the eye of the storm。This is a good old fashioned "lone gunman" thriller - the sort of thing I have read a lot of in my life and can never object to coming back to。 I can't say it's a masterpiece but it was an easy read which suited my needs at the time。 If we can ever go away again, read it Colter Shaw is on the trail of two young men accused of a hate crime。 When he catches them, one of them jumps off a cliff leaving Shaw wondering what the story is。 To find out, he must put himself right into the eye of the storm。This is a good old fashioned "lone gunman" thriller - the sort of thing I have read a lot of in my life and can never object to coming back to。 I can't say it's a masterpiece but it was an easy read which suited my needs at the time。 If we can ever go away again, read it on holiday and read it for someone else。 。。。more
