So I came to a realization after reading this book, not every book that a famous author wrote is actually worth reading, I've read the first book in this series which was about the author's childhood and It was actually pretty good, also his famous other books (Charlie and the Chocolate factory) and (Matilda) and they were pretty well written and they drove me to continue reading the rest of the books he wrote, I started this books months ago and never was able to get to finish it except when I So I came to a realization after reading this book, not every book that a famous author wrote is actually worth reading, I've read the first book in this series which was about the author's childhood and It was actually pretty good, also his famous other books (Charlie and the Chocolate factory) and (Matilda) and they were pretty well written and they drove me to continue reading the rest of the books he wrote, I started this books months ago and never was able to get to finish it except when I had challenged myself and also due to the annoying habit of mine of finishing everything that I started。The book discusses the adult life of the Author, his travels and how he'd gone through the second world war, he never wanted to be there or participate in it but life happens, maybe the only thing that grabbed my attention was that It was a journal of a normal man, he was not a hero and he objected to what war drives men to do。 This is not a story of a hero, but a recollection of a man who found himself in the middle of a war。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book。 It is easy to read。 Roald Dahl is such a wonderful story teller。 But who would have thought that the British could have been so incompetent during the war! The story is quite unbelievable

This is an unbelievable retelling of adventures from master storyteller and RAF pilot, Roald Dahl。 Recounting his days in the military during WWII, Dahl candidly describes the incompetence that came to characterize many missions and commands given to untrained, understaffed outposts。 What an outsider may have thought of as a well coordinated effort was, in fact, anything but。 The victory and his journey home are a wonder。

I had a whale of a time reading this! There are these books that enthrall you so much that you feel like a 10 year old at a funfair。 Not only that, you feel wholesome。 Dahl writes like magic。 But more than that, he makes you fall in love with the world once more。 He has this thirst to enjoy life, steal moments of joy amidst danger and doom and for someone that's become too cynical at 29, and with a pandemic ravaging the world, this was a balm。 I had a whale of a time reading this! There are these books that enthrall you so much that you feel like a 10 year old at a funfair。 Not only that, you feel wholesome。 Dahl writes like magic。 But more than that, he makes you fall in love with the world once more。 He has this thirst to enjoy life, steal moments of joy amidst danger and doom and for someone that's become too cynical at 29, and with a pandemic ravaging the world, this was a balm。 。。。more

Delightful and exciting - made even more enjoyable by the narration by Dan Stevens in the Audible edition。 Dahl truly led a fascinating life!

It shouldn't surprise that the sequel to Roald Dahl's Boy, where older boys torture younger boys by making them warm up toilet seats in the middle of winter, where a boil is lanced (but man I bet it felt good) and adenoids are cut out without pain meds, involves among other things what it's like to be in a horrific plane crash, racist descriptions of living in colonies, and a poor dog being killed by a Green Mamba snake, and well, it doesn't surprise me。 This book is a brutally told, hilarious a It shouldn't surprise that the sequel to Roald Dahl's Boy, where older boys torture younger boys by making them warm up toilet seats in the middle of winter, where a boil is lanced (but man I bet it felt good) and adenoids are cut out without pain meds, involves among other things what it's like to be in a horrific plane crash, racist descriptions of living in colonies, and a poor dog being killed by a Green Mamba snake, and well, it doesn't surprise me。 This book is a brutally told, hilarious at times, and a deeply cringing memoir by a writer I love, and who seems, as more is revealed about him, to be a more or less awful person。 I could handwring more about that if I wanted, but basically whatever you say about Roald Dahl in criticism is probably right。 。。。more

You’d see Roald Dahl and assume ah, that’s a children’s book! But this book certainly didn’t seem like it is meant for little children。What a well written autobiography, full of adventure and amazing descriptions!

3。5 stars。 My 11 yr old chose to read this for a school assignment。 I was glad we decided to read it together before bed。 I know much of Dahl's work, but not much of his writing on his own life。 The book had a bit of language I was able to edit out as I read it to my daughter。 I was also surprised by a few scenes that were a bit gory for a kid her age。 I was able to skip over or verbally edit it as I read。 Now, I know I have a bit more of a sensitive 11 yr old。。。but I would recommend this book f 3。5 stars。 My 11 yr old chose to read this for a school assignment。 I was glad we decided to read it together before bed。 I know much of Dahl's work, but not much of his writing on his own life。 The book had a bit of language I was able to edit out as I read it to my daughter。 I was also surprised by a few scenes that were a bit gory for a kid her age。 I was able to skip over or verbally edit it as I read。 Now, I know I have a bit more of a sensitive 11 yr old。。。but I would recommend this book for older kids。 。。。more

It's inconceivable and impossible for me to convey how much this book meant to 13-14 year old me。 After reading Boy and faking head over heels in love with it (prob my first every autobiography as well) I didn't think I would ever have to read another book again。 I'm done, I've found my favourite, so why keep reading others? What wonderful stories! That's what makes a person。 Memories。 So when I learned about Going Solo and eagerly started reading it, I was introduced to young adulthood and all the wonders and adventures that arised, the stories! They didn't have to be confined to childhood, and in that moment like 14 year old me learned that even if I didn't crash a plan in the African desert and fight Germans in the skies, I too would forge my own memories and stories and maybe just one day I'd be able to sit down and recall them all in a book such as this。 I had a whole life stretched before me that I could fill and shape any which way I want。 And for that, Roald Dahl, I'm entirely in-debted。 Forever and always 💛 。。。more

Somehow, I had never read part 2 of Roald Dahl's memoir, probably because my public library growing up only had Boy。 This book is about his job with the Shell Company and then joining the RAF as a pilot in World War II。 I was enthralled by the amount of terror and adventure Roald Dahl endured as a young man, especially his accidents, surviving a plane crash, driving all over Africa, and being super unequipped to be a soldier and being outnumbered in war。 Somehow, I had never read part 2 of Roald Dahl's memoir, probably because my public library growing up only had Boy。 This book is about his job with the Shell Company and then joining the RAF as a pilot in World War II。 I was enthralled by the amount of terror and adventure Roald Dahl endured as a young man, especially his accidents, surviving a plane crash, driving all over Africa, and being super unequipped to be a soldier and being outnumbered in war。 。。。more

Loved this book。 Something about his writing and authors' autobiographies really does it for me。 I also like stories of colonial Africa (not that I'm a fan of colonialism, but there are some pretty interesting stories)。 I really loved the story of Roald's boy running for 4 hours to decapitate a German dude with a sword and 4 hours home again。 All the stories of the war are equally interesting and terrifying。 I totally cannot imagine how scary it would be to actually be in an aerial dogfight, or Loved this book。 Something about his writing and authors' autobiographies really does it for me。 I also like stories of colonial Africa (not that I'm a fan of colonialism, but there are some pretty interesting stories)。 I really loved the story of Roald's boy running for 4 hours to decapitate a German dude with a sword and 4 hours home again。 All the stories of the war are equally interesting and terrifying。 I totally cannot imagine how scary it would be to actually be in an aerial dogfight, or take a boat from Africa to England while being bombed from above and below。 。。。more

Continuing where "Boy" left off, Going Solo tells more of the stories of the early years of Roald Dahl, with some adventures as a young agent working for the Shell oil corporation in British East Africa, followed by his enlistment into the Royal Air Force during World War II。 He learned to fly, crashed, recuperated, and returned to flying Hurricanes against the ME 109s in several battles in the Mediterranean。 The stories end abruptly in this tome, when his military service is cut short and he re Continuing where "Boy" left off, Going Solo tells more of the stories of the early years of Roald Dahl, with some adventures as a young agent working for the Shell oil corporation in British East Africa, followed by his enlistment into the Royal Air Force during World War II。 He learned to fly, crashed, recuperated, and returned to flying Hurricanes against the ME 109s in several battles in the Mediterranean。 The stories end abruptly in this tome, when his military service is cut short and he returns to England。 I don't think there is a Autobiography Part 3 so if I want more I guess I will have to read one of the bios written about him by others。 As per usual, Dahl is a thrilling, clever writer, and this made me want to read more about him。 He was one of my favorite authors growing up, and my forays back into his work while reading to my daughter have been a nice way to revisit him, and have made me want to pick up the books I hadn't read in addition to those that I recall fondly。 His family's recent decision to post an apology for some of the antisemitic things that he said years before he died also brought him to mind, and made me wonder if any of that was reflected in his writing。 So I've been revisiting his work to see if it still holds up for that reason as well。 I think his writing does hold up and is still worth reading, despite his unfortunate feelings, positions or statements about people。 。。。more

A fascinating catalog of experiences largely of Dahl's experiences as a pilot in Greece during the Second World War。 I love reading about things and places that I will never see firsthand。 (And everything is better when read aloud by Dan Stevens!)。 A fascinating catalog of experiences largely of Dahl's experiences as a pilot in Greece during the Second World War。 I love reading about things and places that I will never see firsthand。 (And everything is better when read aloud by Dan Stevens!)。 。。。more

I loved “Boy” - the first Dahl autobiography about his childhood - but Going Solo was incredible in a different way。 He saw part of WWII that most people haven’t even heard of, including me。 And I can’t help but marvel thinking about how different the world of literature would be if he hadn’t survived。 Also, the giraffe passage。 I could just die on the spot from happiness!

So interesting to read an account of someone who lived in a time seemingly so different from ours。 I’ve read this book twice quite a few years apart once when I was about 9 and again when I was about 15 each time I read it I enjoyed it just as much as the last

This action packed auto-biography of the award-winning childrens (and a bit of grow-up) author Rohl Dahl is about how he survived, with a tremendous amount of luck, through World War Two as an RAF fighter pilot。 Battling through the skies and almost dying many times at the hands of his numerous enemies。

Turns out Dahl was not only a brilliant children’s fiction writer, but a fascinating man with a life of stories to tell in England, Scandinavia, colonial Africa, and World War 2。 Boy, can the man tell a story, but some of his true stories almost seem crazier than his fiction。
