Summary

This is the second novel in the "Remembrance of Earth’s Past" near-future trilogy。 Written by the China's multiple-award-winning science fiction author, Cixin Liu。

In Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion—four centuries in the future。 The aliens' human collaborators have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are exposed to the enemy。 Only the human mind remains a secret。

This is the motivation for the Wallfacer Project, a daring plan that grants four men enormous resources to design secret strategies, hidden through deceit and misdirection from Earth and Trisolaris alike。 Three of the Wallfacers are influential statesmen and scientists, but the fourth is a total unknown。 Luo Ji, an unambitious Chinese astronomer and sociologist, is baffled by his new status。 All he knows is that he's the one Wallfacer that Trisolaris wants dead。

ExcellentLike the science fiction of Asimov, “The Dark Forest” combines interesting characters, exceptional pacing, and big ideas。 I highly recommend it。

Ahh, so good。 I still don't understand half the science in this book but I don't care。 I love diving headfirst into this world and I am so convinced this could be a true story or a very real depiction of our future (although this has my entirely convinced we should not contact other life forms in space ever)。 Very excited to read the final book in this trilogy。 Ahh, so good。 I still don't understand half the science in this book but I don't care。 I love diving headfirst into this world and I am so convinced this could be a true story or a very real depiction of our future (although this has my entirely convinced we should not contact other life forms in space ever)。 Very excited to read the final book in this trilogy。 。。。more

I like the story, but the Chinese patriotism looks so much like raw propaganda that it killed my enthusiasm for the books。 The writing could be better, there are lengthy pages that are supposed to be poetic by fail to hit the mark, and sometimes things are exposed in dialogues when I feel like it distorts the characters in order to make the exposition fit。Overall, not much surprise to expect from the story, and not much depth to take out of the characters either。 All that's left is that reading I like the story, but the Chinese patriotism looks so much like raw propaganda that it killed my enthusiasm for the books。 The writing could be better, there are lengthy pages that are supposed to be poetic by fail to hit the mark, and sometimes things are exposed in dialogues when I feel like it distorts the characters in order to make the exposition fit。Overall, not much surprise to expect from the story, and not much depth to take out of the characters either。 All that's left is that reading a very pro-China story is interesting for a try。 I feel that it doesn't deserve its positive reputation。 。。。more

Man this book was disappointing。 I loved the three body problem。 It had moments where it dragged on a bit but as a whole the book was excellent。 Well this book, it just dragged a whole lot。

The Dark Forest was very beautiful in an abstract, scientific way, similar to the first book, The Three Body Problem。 Liu created an extremely compelling portrait of how life on Earth would develop given the unthinkable: a looming future of total extinction。 Long after characters and plot details have grown hazy in my mind, I'll remember concepts of cosmic civilization, sophons, strong interaction material, microwave electricity, underground cities, and splintering political entities。 But, all t The Dark Forest was very beautiful in an abstract, scientific way, similar to the first book, The Three Body Problem。 Liu created an extremely compelling portrait of how life on Earth would develop given the unthinkable: a looming future of total extinction。 Long after characters and plot details have grown hazy in my mind, I'll remember concepts of cosmic civilization, sophons, strong interaction material, microwave electricity, underground cities, and splintering political entities。 But, all that aside, it has to be said: the "romance" (and treatment of female characters in general) is infuriating。 Luo Ji's wife especially。 Everything about how she was described dripped of "this (perfect) girl is not like the other (vapid, stupid, shallow) girls。。。。。。 she likes art。。。。 and is unconcerned with makeup。。。。 and she never gets mad and has no character flaws。" Honestly, I didn't have as much of a problem with that when she was imaginary - an unrealistic fantasy revealing the traits Luo Ji admires in women。 But then, she appeared in real life, exactly as she was in his imagination。 It's not just her either。 Every female character seems to be more emotionally soft than their male counterparts, and they almost never have any agency in the story。 Disappointing, since I felt like the first book was much better on this front。 Maybe there just weren't enough female characters to make it apparent though。 Ah well。 Overall I'm glad I read it, but I don't think I'll read the final installment in the trilogy。Verdict: 3。5/5。 Great science, great aliens, ehh characters。 。。。more

Very interesting follow up to the Three Body Problem。

Some fascinating concepts dragged down slightly by mostly cardboard characters, although it was an improvement over the first book in that regard。 Also, it felt like there was almost no effort made to make the dialogue sound natural to a native English speaker, which was odd since the prose overall was very well done。

So much profundity hidden (?) in a science fiction book。 I can’t think of the last time a book provoked philosophical thoughts that lingered with me for days。 Vastly exceeds the first book in the series。

3。5/5 stars。 For me, this book started out really strong, but by the end I just wanted it to get to the point。 There were a lot of cool ideas introduced。 I found the wallfacer project, as well as the future society to be super interesting。 The ending of the book felt very anti-climactic to me though, and there was nothing surprising about it。 I’m curious as to where the third book is going to go, because this book could have been the end of it。

As always, if you don't like spoilers, then why on Earth are you reading a review? My wife bought The Three Body Problem for me a couple years ago, and I enjoyed it。 What it lacked in characterization it made up for with interesting ideas and a solid pacing。This book is the reverse - way too much characterization, to the point that I don't care about the pacing because anyone who's supposed to be a protagonist is a sociopath。 In one scene Luo Ji is explaining his understanding of the cosmic situa As always, if you don't like spoilers, then why on Earth are you reading a review? My wife bought The Three Body Problem for me a couple years ago, and I enjoyed it。 What it lacked in characterization it made up for with interesting ideas and a solid pacing。This book is the reverse - way too much characterization, to the point that I don't care about the pacing because anyone who's supposed to be a protagonist is a sociopath。 In one scene Luo Ji is explaining his understanding of the cosmic situation to Shi Quiang in terms of malice and benevolence。 This happens just after Luo Ji has learned he successfully blew up a star that had 4 planets。 And then there's the female characters with no agency。 Don't get me started on the prepubescent fantasy of Luo Ji's wife after the madcapping of the previous girl he was dating and all that maudlin fluff about "imagining the perfect girl" because another girl *wanted* him to do it, so he did, and fell in love with the *imagined* girl (ie - his own narcissistic self, ultimately) to which the other girl smiles and waves sadly goodbye。 And from an idea standpoint, the moment the entire earth fleet trucked out to meet the "no inertia" ball from a cross between Flight of the Navigator and Explorers to get blown up Arkanoid style I just irllol'd。 And then going so far as to talk about "future history。 Oof。The book does have a long-game payoff。 Perhaps I'd be less irritated with it if it had been a bit of a shorter game (a similar complaint I made about Anna Burns' Milkman。) I'm finishing the third book because, as the two stars indicate, there were some interesting ideas and I'd like to see how it concludes。 What I don't care about is the。。。 It's not a power fantasy, perhaps a "preciousness" fantasy? of Luo Ji being the only person the Tri-Solarans want to kill。PS: Why wasn't Shi Quiang Luo Ji's wallbreaker? I mean, after the stunt with the married couple, that would have been the obvious (albeit heavy-handed) choice。 After all, he disappeared from the book at the end。 After Luo Ji explained "The Dark Forest", Shi could have said "I am your Wallbreaker!" And then Luo would say, "That's really dark。" 。。。more

read the first awhile ago and it took a long time to get through for me。 I started this one too a few years back and the prologue seemed to drag。 but I picked it up again recently and the chapters just flew by this time。 I think once you get past the prologue (which is important so pay attention!) it gets more engaging。 Depressing as hell by the end even with the resolution, and some of the plot development was a little too far fetched along the way, even for scifi imho。 still a worthwhile read read the first awhile ago and it took a long time to get through for me。 I started this one too a few years back and the prologue seemed to drag。 but I picked it up again recently and the chapters just flew by this time。 I think once you get past the prologue (which is important so pay attention!) it gets more engaging。 Depressing as hell by the end even with the resolution, and some of the plot development was a little too far fetched along the way, even for scifi imho。 still a worthwhile read with some intriguing ideas。 I'll read the third one, eventually, after i take a breather。 。。。more

Some SciFi is about solving problems with what you currently have, and that's something Cixin Liu understands。 The main problem is his storytelling is rather dull and uninteresting, and sometimes I just feel there are paragraphs wasted on nothing useful。 Or at least the translation is。 I think the narration is better the further away he strays from physics and focuses on human nature。Part I is, for lack of a better word, boring。 Cixin Liu lays the foundation for solving the problem presented at Some SciFi is about solving problems with what you currently have, and that's something Cixin Liu understands。 The main problem is his storytelling is rather dull and uninteresting, and sometimes I just feel there are paragraphs wasted on nothing useful。 Or at least the translation is。 I think the narration is better the further away he strays from physics and focuses on human nature。Part I is, for lack of a better word, boring。 Cixin Liu lays the foundation for solving the problem presented at the end of The Three-Body Problem with some troublesome characters。 One of which is our protagonist, Luo Ji, a hedonist bum who has a "waifu 4 laifu" and asks the UN to print her on a pillow so he can have his own pixie manic dream girl with Stockholm Syndrome。 Why is he important? I dunno, maybe because he talked to Ye Wenjie in the Prologue, who asked him to come up with psychohistory but named here as "Cosmic Sociology," and shed pretty much did all the work。 Still doesn't answer the question why he is important。Part II is when things turn really SciFicy and we can see the consequences of the decisions made in Part I。 I had hopes the book would get better but I only got disappointed。 There's an episode with a --let's call it-- droplet, and you dear reader know what's about to happen, you feel in your bones you're 110% certain of what is to come but there are paragraphs upon paragraphs of useless exposition that at the end of the day don't matter because the events happen exactly how you were expecting them to happen, in lengthy paragraphs may I add。 I don't want to call the ship captains/admirals dumb but, boy, they are idiots。Finally, the grand finale comes, the ultimate resolution for the conflict of the centuries, and it was underwhelming。 I didn't learn from the underwhelming conclusion to The Three-Body Problem。 Now I've learned my lesson and I expect to be underwhelmed by Death's End。 。。。more
