This edition of Pride and Prejudice is perfect for GCSE-level students: it comes complete with the novel, plus an introduction providing context, and a glossary explaining key terms。

‘She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me; and I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men。’

Such is the unpromising start to one of the most well-known relationships in English literature。 Can vivacious, intelligent, but fortuneless Elizabeth Bennet and the wealthy, reserved and seemingly haughty Mr Darcy see past their first impressions of one another?

Jane Austen’s 1813 novel paints a witty picture of Georgian society, showing through the ups and downs of the five Bennet sisters the lengths to which women must go to secure a husband and position – and, in Elizabeth’s case, to find a marriage of true minds。

3。5 stars。 I really enjoyed this read, but it wasn't this jaw dropping experience for me。 The story and plot is good, characters are fun, and it definitely reminds me of a romance novel at its core。 I thought the writing was easy to understand, and the character work was well done。 I liked that the themes of the book are literally the title of it - at times, I think it was a bit too on the nose about the messages of don't let your pride and prejudices mold what you think of a person, but at the 3。5 stars。 I really enjoyed this read, but it wasn't this jaw dropping experience for me。 The story and plot is good, characters are fun, and it definitely reminds me of a romance novel at its core。 I thought the writing was easy to understand, and the character work was well done。 I liked that the themes of the book are literally the title of it - at times, I think it was a bit too on the nose about the messages of don't let your pride and prejudices mold what you think of a person, but at the same time I thought it was cleverly done and really hit its mark with its themes, so it didn't bother me so much。 This book has a great ensemble cast, and while Mr。 Darcy is no Mr。 Rochester (Jane Eyre), I totally get why he's one of the great romances of the classic literary era。 His, and Elizabeth's changes of character, and of heart for and towards one another was really enjoyable to read, and their romance was a great ride and in the end, just so pure and heartfelt。 You definitely could feel their regard for one another ooz off of the pages, and that was super enjoyable to see flourish throughout the story。What else can I say? This is a classic for a reason。 Really fun and easy to read, and the slice of life nature of this was really entertaining。 Good cast of characters, good message, and all in all, I would read this again for a really solid romantic read。 。。。more

But Elizabeth and Mr。 Darcy’s hate-to-love relationship wasn’t even the worst part — the worst part was how unbelievable and unrealistically fast Mr。 Darcy’s attraction for Elizabeth developed。 It wasn’t even well-written。 It was just a few encounters, no more than five conversations, and bam, Darcy is completely head-over-heels in love with Elizabeth。 I was so incredulous at how this can be part of a world-renowned “classic。” It felt more like a badly written, low budget rom-com。tNext up, the characters are not especially likable。 Elizabeth Bennet herself is not so extraordinary。 She’s rather plain, actually — her boldness, determination, willfulness, etc are all rather muted。 She also had no character development at all。 It felt like she was just a really prejudiced girl and suddenly !!! she had a revelation that she shouldn’t judge too early。 Next, Mr。 Darcy was not really appealing either。 Perhaps, again, it is because the dark, brooding, handsome gentleman is already overplayed in current literature and television, but I just had no attraction for him。 How can a person just suddenly change from unmannered, silent, and antisocial to charming, caring, sympathetic??? Although he is not a flat character, his character arc was completely unrealistic。 The other characters such as Jane and Mr。 Bingley are also flat characters with pretty constant motives and traits。tLast, the theme of the novel is pretty contradictory。 Mrs。 Bennet is ridiculed for her concern for landing her daughters a husband, suggesting that the author believes there should be more to a woman’s life than marriage。 However, the novel is entirely about marriage。 It ends with everyone being married, playing the Disney “happily-ever-after” card, and gives no emphasis to any other aspect of their lives。tOverall, a disappointing read, especially for such a widely acclaimed novel。 。。。more
