Summary

The Lost Boys say that Peter Pan went back to England because of Wendy Darling, but Wendy is just an old life he left behind。 Neverland is his real home。 So when Peter returns to it after ten years in the real world, he’s surprised to find a Neverland that no longer seems to need him。

The only person who truly missed Peter is Captain James Hook, who is delighted to have his old rival back。 But when a new war ignites between the Lost Boys and Hook’s pirates, the ensuing bloodshed becomes all too real – and Peter’s rivalry with Hook starts to blur into something far more complicated, sensual, and deadly。

I loved the dynamic between Peter Pan and Captain Hook, although I wish it was a bit more fleshed out… Also the Lost Boys seemed so much like side characters only there for show, at some point they did something and there was no reaction from Peter despite what I thought would be anger and hurt and disbelief because huh??? Also I hope Earnest gets the life he wants and lowkey wish we knew what happened to him。 But these are just ramblings of someone who just finished reading, an amazing renditio I loved the dynamic between Peter Pan and Captain Hook, although I wish it was a bit more fleshed out… Also the Lost Boys seemed so much like side characters only there for show, at some point they did something and there was no reaction from Peter despite what I thought would be anger and hurt and disbelief because huh??? Holy shit this was fantastic。 An incredible, transformative take on the story of Peter Pan while being heartrendingly true to the source material -- I've always loved Peter Pan for its discussion of gender roles, the constructed nature of childhood, the sociopathy of boyness。。。 and this book took on those same themes and continued the conversation without a hitch。 Without apologies or excuses, just a conscientious (while un-self-conscious) story being told from a reclaimed position of wonder -- Holy shit this was fantastic。 An incredible, transformative take on the story of Peter Pan while being heartrendingly true to the source material -- I've always loved Peter Pan for its discussion of gender roles, the constructed nature of childhood, the sociopathy of boyness。。。 and this book took on those same themes and continued the conversation without a hitch。 Without apologies or excuses, just a conscientious (while un-self-conscious) story being told from a reclaimed position of wonder -- Neverland is queer af and always has been。 Childhood, like gender, like piracy, can be sources of strength and adventure and self-discovery。。。 but if you let them define you, they can also be traps。 Seriously, this is brilliant。Now, I am not a huge fan of romance, so I can't speak to that aspect of this book other than to say that I wasn't (as I often am) squicked out or bored enough by any of it to skip entire paragraphs。 The romance was woven into the story and worldbuilding seamlessly, and let me tell you the worldbuilding is too good for words。 The kraken, the fairies, ohmygod this was so good。Why isn't everyone shouting about this book? How is this not a bestseller? Who do I talk to about this? 。。。more

Truth be told, I remember next to nothing about Peter Pan。 So I was scared I'd be lost in this world just with the few details I remembered from when I watched the movie way back in my childhood。 Fortunately, it was fine and while I certainly didn't remember everything, it did not stop me from finding this book sweet and pleasurable to read。 Though I must say that at the beginning, I didn't really know what to think of the antagonistic character of Peter, and the end which seemed a bit rushed, I Truth be told, I remember next to nothing about Peter Pan。 So I was scared I'd be lost in this world just with the few details I remembered from when I watched the movie way back in my childhood。 Fortunately, it was fine and while I certainly didn't remember everything, it did not stop me from finding this book sweet and pleasurable to read。 Though I must say that at the beginning, I didn't really know what to think of the antagonistic character of Peter, and the end which seemed a bit rushed, I enjoyed reading it。 My favorite part was of course the cave because I love seeing how authors deal with the turning point in enemies-to-lovers relationships。 Oh, and this was also the first book featuring a trans MC! Because it was my first, I can't really tell how well did the author do in portraying Peter as a trans man, but I think he did well。 He took it as a simple fact, nothing weird or grotesque, and did not spend pages upon pages justifying his decision, which I liked (because there's nothing to justify。 Peter is trans。 That's it。 And who is not okay with this: bye-bye)As expected, this was a very light and simple book, but kudos for being somehow less childish than I thought it would be。 All in all, a nice book to read in an hour or two during a lazy summer day。 。。。more

I devoured this in the space of a night and it has rocketed up the list to one of my favorites of the year—and tbh all time。 Forever grateful to KJ Charles for putting this on my radar, I loved every word。 Trans Peter Pan reimagining in which Peter is the eldest Darling child come to Neverland to escape a family who doesn’t understand that he’s their son, not their daughter, and live his dream of being a boy—an adventurous, vicious, charming boy waging war on the pirate captain James Hook。 After I devoured this in the space of a night and it has rocketed up the list to one of my favorites of the year—and tbh all time。 Forever grateful to KJ Charles for putting this on my radar, I loved every word。 Trans Peter Pan reimagining in which Peter is the eldest Darling child come to Neverland to escape a family who doesn’t understand that he’s their son, not their daughter, and live his dream of being a boy—an adventurous, vicious, charming boy waging war on the pirate captain James Hook。 After returning to Neverland a decade later, on the verge of adulthood, Peter finds that things have changed and that Hook isn’t so different from him after all, that maybe there is love where he once thought there was hate。 A very quick read and clever reimagining that digs down to your heart as unexpectedly and fast as one of Pan’s little knives。 The grief of growing up, depending on fantasy and dreams as survival and escape but needing to learn to function too, the reckoning that to live and love is to know pain and imperfection alongside hope and healing。。。 damn。 I cried several times in this beautiful little book, and I plan to scream its praises to anyone who will listen。 If you’re a queer kid who ever invented worlds in which you could be you and belong and be safe and find the love you couldn’t anywhere else, this book is for you。 It’s a tight and long hug before starting an awfully big adventure—living。 。。。more

Peter Pan has returned to Neverland an adult, after leaving for 10 years to follow his Wendy。 Everyone is shocked to see him return, some happier than others, but none quite so glad as Captain James Hook。 Their rivalry picks up once again until, finding themselves lost in a sprawling cave after narrowly avoiding a kraken attack, they are forced to work together。This was an absolutely fantastic retelling/sequel to Peter Pan。 It's so clever and so well thought out, and it feels adult。 Chant's writ Peter Pan has returned to Neverland an adult, after leaving for 10 years to follow his Wendy。 Everyone is shocked to see him return, some happier than others, but none quite so glad as Captain James Hook。 Their rivalry picks up once again until, finding themselves lost in a sprawling cave after narrowly avoiding a kraken attack, they are forced to work together。This was an absolutely fantastic retelling/sequel to Peter Pan。 It's so clever and so well thought out, and it feels adult。 Chant's writing is quick and fun, fast paced and there wasn't a moment that I felt the story went off on an unnecessary tangent。There is a very strong focus on what it means to be a villain, and if our traditional right and wrong is quite so black and white。 I also absolutely loved the focus on growing up and accepting what comes with being an adult, responsibilities and all, as opposed to the original stories focus on resisting this。 Without going into spoilers, it put the idea of Neverland and what it was, what it could be to James and Peter, in a very different light。Overall an incredibly strong book。 I never thought I needed a LGBTQ+ Peter Pan, but it was *chef kiss*。 Loved it。 。。。more

An absolutely charming and thoughtful retelling of Peter Pan, where Peter returns to Neverland to escape a family who insists he’s a girl and finds that things aren’t quite how he remembers them。 The reworking of the original was so clever, it really becomes an exploration of escapism as a way to cope。 I thought the romance with local hook-handed drama queen James Hook was a bit strange at first but by the end I found it thoroughly delightful。Anyone looking for a story that’s queer (gay and tran An absolutely charming and thoughtful retelling of Peter Pan, where Peter returns to Neverland to escape a family who insists he’s a girl and finds that things aren’t quite how he remembers them。 The reworking of the original was so clever, it really becomes an exploration of escapism as a way to cope。 I thought the romance with local hook-handed drama queen James Hook was a bit strange at first but by the end I found it thoroughly delightful。Anyone looking for a story that’s queer (gay and trans, double whammy baby!) and fantastical, fun but with important and relevant themes, I totally recommend。 。。。more

Boy, do I ADORE the premise of this book! I think it’s an incredible way to explore the idea of Neverland and some of the peter pan themes like adulthood and playing at being grown-ups and pretending and society's expectations, etc。 This queer retelling is so high concept and well-executed in its exploration of the character of Peter, I’m just really excited that it exists。 To have Peter as a trans man struggling between Neverland, the world that allows him to be his true self, and the “real” w Boy, do I ADORE the premise of this book! I do have a bit of criticism in terms of the actual romantic subplot of the book。 While it was an enjoyable read and I would 100% recommend it, I do think the romance was the weakest aspect for me。 I'm fairly critical when it comes to romantic plots, just because I love them so much when they’re well-executed, and this one, while tense when needed and sweet at times, was missing a little something for me to be fully swooning along。 But honestly, it's kind of nitpicking at this point and this is a great read regardless。 It's very easy to read in one sitting and you don’t even really need to have read Peter Pan or be CRAZY familiar with the ~mythology to follow along。 I’m a casual Peter Pan fan at best and I really enjoyed it。 。。。more

An easy, enticing read! Peter Darling turns the story of Peter Pan that we all know and love into a story for adults who are still always learning about themselves。 A heartwarming story of growth, this novel brings the importance and symbolism of Peter Pan for trans people to life in new, lovely ways。

What the hell I need a 500page epitome of this story, not this 150 page long short story😭 I can say that my childhood is well and truly dead in a ditch now。 First they make Hook hot and a hero in Once Upon A Time and now they make Peter Pan grown up and have sex with Hook。 I love it though, it was charming and lovely and hot and uncomfortable。 A lovely retelling of this age-old fairytale。

What a discovery this book has been! I loved how the author included LGBT representation and how natural this is to the story they are telling。 I think this interpretation adds a lot of new layers to these well-known characters: it makes them more realistic and defines their personalities perfectly。 Neverland has alwas been about freedom, youth and imagination; so I find it interesting and exciting that these ideas developed into self-descovery, growing-up and sexuality。 Talking about Neverland, What a discovery this book has been! They are sworn enemies, but they are the only ones who can understand each other。 Also, even when they were enemies, they truly saw and treated each other as equals。 OF COURSE, I WAS GOING TO FALL FOR IT。 I loved the development of their relation and how much it was related also to Peter's own discovery of his sexuality。 They were the cutest together and the ending was so heart-warming!!!
