Summary

In his latest mystery set in Scotland and the Outer Hebrides, award-winning author Peter May spins a tale about three disparate cases that may or may not be linked。。。

On the remote Isle of Harris in Scotland's Outer Hebrides, a man washes up on a deserted beach, hypothermic and completely disoriented。 He has no idea who he is or how he got there。 The only clue to his condition is a map of the island showing a desolate, ancient path called the Coffin Road。 With a sense of dread and no clear idea what lies at the other end, he knows he must follow the trail if he has any hope of discovering his identity。

Meanwhile, homicide detective George Gunn makes the rough ocean crossing to a remote, sea-battered lighthouse on a rock in the northern Atlantic, twenty miles west of the Outer Hebrides, to investigate a brutal murder。 Despite its isolation, the tiny island has seen its share of tragedy: more than a century earlier, three lighthouse keepers disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again。 And now there is a new tragedy, and Gunn must figure out what happened。

At the same time, a teenage girl lies in her Edinburgh bedroom, desperate to discover the truth about her father's death。 Two years after the discovery of the pioneering scientist's suicide note, Karen Fleming still cannot accept that her father would willingly abandon her。 And the more she discovers about the nature of his research, the more she suspects that suicide had nothing to do with it。

A bit slow and dragging at the beginning but improved as it moved on

Another great book from Peter May。 The story is set against the wonderful Scottish Isles with fantastic descriptions of the beauty of the area。 The reader can almost feel the wind on their face and smell the salt of the sea while admiring the colour changing landscape。If you have an interest in bee's you will love this story, as the purpose and function of bee's within our community and the wider world is a strong theme。 I did learn a thing or two。This novel has it all, secrets, lies, murder and Another great book from Peter May。 The story is set against the wonderful Scottish Isles with fantastic descriptions of the beauty of the area。 The reader can almost feel the wind on their face and smell the salt of the sea while admiring the colour changing landscape。If you have an interest in bee's you will love this story, as the purpose and function of bee's within our community and the wider world is a strong theme。 I did learn a thing or two。This novel has it all, secrets, lies, murder and mystery and is a great read。 。。。more

A standalone thriller set in Scotland's Outer Hebrides with a protagonist who has amnesia。 Environmental concerns over bee population declines provide context。 There is one plotting weakness that other readers have spotted as one misdirection gets a bit confusing。 A standalone thriller set in Scotland's Outer Hebrides with a protagonist who has amnesia。 Environmental concerns over bee population declines provide context。 There is one plotting weakness that other readers have spotted as one misdirection gets a bit confusing。 。。。more

3。5 stars - Set in the Hebrides, this book was made for me。 It was a pretty good mystery and I love the locales。

Catherine McAllister

Brought the Isle of Harris and Lewis to life。 With some twists and terns to keep you guessing。

I loved the setting and the vivid descriptions of Harris and Lewis。 The story was okay, but it left me somewhat underwhelmed。 It certainly didn’t hold my attention like The Lewis Trilogy。

Ellinor Leonard

A good yarn well written worth reading more of his books。

Solid story, good characters, if not together surprising plot line。 Not as strong as The Lewis Trilogy, but still worth reading。 Solid story, good characters, if not together surprising plot line。 Not as strong as The Lewis Trilogy, but still worth reading。 。。。more

Another superb novel by Peter May。 This one is clever, suspenseful and un-put-downable。 I definitely recommend it。

Thoroughly enjoy the setting of these books。 The story is almost incidental!

When I first started this book I found it very slow going, nearly gave up, I was only going to give it 2or 3 stars, I am glad that I continued, it all started to come together, didn’t quite finish as I thought it might, thankfully

It has everything a good thriller should have - suspense, a sense of danger and kept me gripped but more than that I was really drawn in by the descriptive writing of the beautiful landscape of the Isle of Harris。 Another place to add to my bucket list when we can travel again。 Also includes some fascinating facts about bees as an extra bonus。

Evidently nothing。。。it was just the location where Neal hid his beehives??? What a waste。。。Most of the book was good and atmospheric, painting a fairly realistic picture of life on a windy, rainy coast but the story fell flat for me and I would hesitate to recommend it anyone else。A great coastal mystery is "Riptide" by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child。 Try that one if you were as disappointed with this novel as I was。 。。。more

I'm not sure I get on with Peter May's books and/or his writing style。 Unlike the previous nook I read of his, I enjoyed the beginning of this story and the mystery it threw up for the reader to learn about。 I loved the setting and the descriptions of the landscape, but I'm a sucker for Scotland and its islands being described well in books。Unfortunately, the narrative becomes much less engaging and the characters are much more clichéd。 By the end, some of the decisions made and the events relay I'm not sure I get on with Peter May's books and/or his writing style。 Unlike the previous nook I read of his, I enjoyed the beginning of this story and the mystery it threw up for the reader to learn about。 I loved the setting and the descriptions of the landscape, but I'm a sucker for Scotland and its islands being described well in books。Unfortunately, the narrative becomes much less engaging and the characters are much more clichéd。 By the end, some of the decisions made and the events relayed don't make sense。 Have given this a three-star rating because of the strong start but - for me - this is teetering on a two-star book。 Not sure I'll read more from this author, even though I have more available to me。 。。。more

I loved Peter May’s Lewis Trilogy。 His writing evokes the harsh but beautiful environment of the Hebrides and northern Scotland。 This book is not a part of a series, but the setting is just as atmospheric and an important “character” of this book。 Great mystery with many twists and turns。 Good read。

I really enjoyed this beautifully written book。 The mystery kept me guessing as to what was happening, and。 how the threads and characters fitted together (or didn't) I found it difficult to 'put down'。 (I 'read' this on audible, narrated by Peter Forbes) I really enjoyed this beautifully written book。 The mystery kept me guessing as to what was happening, and。 how the threads and characters fitted together (or didn't) I found it difficult to 'put down'。 (I 'read' this on audible, narrated by Peter Forbes) 。。。more

An astounding plot with much suspense, bizaare but believable characters and excellent twists and turns。 Again, the landscape of the Isle of Harris was one of the characters。

With another gripping mystery-thriller set in the Outer Hebrides, Peter May always amazes me with the level of detail and research put into his novels。 It always results in a very polished final product, and a story which feels grounded firmly in reality while staying faithful to the history of the rugged wilderness of its setting。 The story itself is also very well-written and paced out exactly how a mystery should: small details released little by little from different characters' perspectives With another gripping mystery-thriller set in the Outer Hebrides, Peter May always amazes me with the level of detail and research put into his novels。 It always results in a very polished final product, and a story which feels grounded firmly in reality while staying faithful to the history of the rugged wilderness of its setting。 The story itself is also very well-written and paced out exactly how a mystery should: small details released little by little from different characters' perspectives until the reader can piece it together。 A very enjoyable read, and one which I hope to forget entirely so I can experience it again。 。。。more

Coffin Road is an atmospheric murder mystery set in the rugged landscape of the Outer Hebrides。 It has an unexpected environmental science element, which made it particularly enjoyable for me。

There was the loss of three light house men on the isale of Flannen back in 1900。 Neal Maclean is supposedely researching this。 The book is easy to read and has a good unfolding of clues around Neal Maclean's real identity and also his increasing awareness of what he was doing and what his character is really like。I've worked with people who have lost their identity and how memories may slowly re appear。 The intact factual knowledge base mirrors what does happen; and jumps in self awareness also seemed to me to make sense; though at some point there is a sudden awakening and it all comes back is good for the story but fairly unlikely。 I enjoyed that darkness at the start where he cant work out who he is and how people know him。 Peter May writes well; and it was also enjoyable to have DS George Gunn as the lead policeman; he pops into the Peter May stories almost as a walk in but decisive character is many of the stories。How to do these star ratings? It's probably a 4 star given how easy it is to read and how the story unfolds 。。。more

Just before Christmas I was hospitalised for a while。 Recovering from my operation I asked my wife to bring me a book。 She chose "Coffin Road"。 Peter May is a favourite author of us both, and we both love the Outer Hebrides which provide the setting for many of his books, including most of this one。 "Coffin Road" proved to be a fine thriller, based around the saving of our world's bee population。 Coincidentally I'd very recently enjoyed reading Suzie Carr's "The Dance" which also centres on this Just before Christmas I was hospitalised for a while。 Recovering from my operation I asked my wife to bring me a book。 She chose "Coffin Road"。 Peter May is a favourite author of us both, and we both love the Outer Hebrides which provide the setting for many of his books, including most of this one。 "Coffin Road" proved to be a fine thriller, based around the saving of our world's bee population。 Coincidentally I'd very recently enjoyed reading Suzie Carr's "The Dance" which also centres on this same theme。 Both books make it clear how important bees are to our future。 Do consider reading this if you love thrillers。 Maybe (as reading it and "The Dance" did for me) you'll become aware of a massive world problem that you'd previously barely recognised。 。。。more
