Summary

Katherine Ormerod, journalist and social media mogul, is here to burst the Instagram bubble and discuss the real effects of social media 'perfection'。

The internet has set destructive standards of flawlessness and comparison。 We're working so hard to live up to these new benchmarks that we're burning ourselves out, and we're working so hard to maintain them that we're self-perpetuating an unobtainable reality。

Until girls and women alike see the social media fantasies for what they are - constructed realities - and stop comparing their lifestyles, bodies, partners, even families to those seen on their feeds and screens, they will never be able to realize their potential in the workplace, in the political system or in their quest for happiness。

In How Social Media is Ruining Your Life, Katherine explodes our social-media-addled ideas about body image, money, relationships, motherhood, careers, politics and more, and gives readers the tools they need to control their own online lives, rather than being controlled by them。 An important book for any woman who has ever looked at her Instagram feed and thought, 'Who are these women, and how the hell do they do it?'

What a lot of people think about social media written in a book。 The takeaways should be taught to kids

Nothing new here。 Preachy and repetitive。 A magazine article stretched out to fill a book。 Avoid。

Couldn't get though finishing it, I think it's more aimed towards women who post on social media and living that 'digital lifestyle'。 Title was good though。 Couldn't get though finishing it, I think it's more aimed towards women who post on social media and living that 'digital lifestyle'。 Title was good though。 。。。more

Concise, relevant, informative and surprisingly personal。 Recommended。

I was a little disappointed in the content of this book。 I was hoping for a more research based look at how social media addiction works。 Instead I felt like I was reading a book catered towards other social media “influencers” and giving them tips about how to balance their online and offline lives。 A lot of the tips and insights felt very superficial。 It was easy to read and I liked reading some of her anecdotes, though。

The author keeps posing as a social influencer, keeps bragging about herself, superficially discusses social issues with a clear intent of virtue signaling。。。 I tried to struggle trough it but gave up after about 1/4。 I have never written a negative review before, but this book really deserves it。

Found it really informative and the takeaway points at the end of each chapter were really useful!

Def not for me。 This book was aimed towards people who use social media a significant amount each day。 It's like an influencer's guide to not getting social media burnt out, written by an influencer。 I don't think I use social media enough。 Def not for me。 This book was aimed towards people who use social media a significant amount each day。 It's like an influencer's guide to not getting social media burnt out, written by an influencer。 I don't think I use social media enough。 。。。more

A very insightful feminine focused piece exploring the challenges of social media on millennials and generation Z。 I particularly enjoyed the chapter on politics and how the notion of echo chambers is creating an evermore divisive political debate。 Would recommend to anyone who wants to create a healthy relationship with social media。

Great bookIt really makes you think about the impact of social media in our lives in every aspect of it。 I’ll never see instagram with the same eyes again。

This book does a good job presenting chapter by chapter each area of people's lives that is negatively influenced by social media。 Although it does offer helpful advice and tips, I couldn't help but feel some suggested actions were a bit of an overkill - why go through all the trouble of finding ways to limit yourself when you could only delete your profile? It was obvious as well that even if the writer was 100% conscious of the ill effects of the social, she was, is and will always be a die har This book does a good job presenting chapter by chapter each area of people's lives that is negatively influenced by social media。 Although it does offer helpful advice and tips, I couldn't help but feel some suggested actions were a bit of an overkill - why go through all the trouble of finding ways to limit yourself when you could only delete your profile? It was obvious as well that even if the writer was 100% conscious of the ill effects of the social, she was, is and will always be a die hard consumer of social media。Overall though, it makes for an interesting read。 。。。more

I didn’t learn anything new from this book, though it was a good summation of the downsides of social media。 I also felt it was tailored more for influencers that were feeling burn out from alway being online, rather than regular consumers of social media。 I would have preferred more actionable ideas / strategies of how exactly to cut down my social media consumption。 But I guess because the author uses social media for her business, the goal of the book isn’t abandonment of social media。

Although it wasn't entirely what I expected, it did have some valid points。 However, some of it got drowned in too many personal scenarios。 Maybe I was just mislead with the title overall Although it wasn't entirely what I expected, it did have some valid points。 However, some of it got drowned in too many personal scenarios。 Maybe I was just mislead with the title overall 。。。more

It’s a wonder how so often we’re blind to what’s in front of us。 We follow the crowds simply because everyone is doing it。 Of course, we can only learn AFTER it has happened。 So here’s all of it in a form of a book。 Your awareness on how social media infiltrate our lives will heightened as you read through every pages。 Get ready for a detox 💆🏻‍♂️

Very interesting read。 There's so much psychology involved in the whole social media circus。 Who knew that people are actually taking selfies in Ikea bedroom set-ups and pretending that it's their home?! Bizarre。 Definitely makes you think twice about your online behaviour。 I'd already changed my behaviour prior to reading this book and I'm glad about that! This was well written and I liked the author’s personal anecdotes but there wasn’t much in there about social media that I hadn’t read elsewhere。

Interesting & raised some big thoughts around our dependency on technology and online acceptance。 Feel like this could've been published as a long-essay instead of a book though。 Interesting & raised some big thoughts around our dependency on technology and online acceptance。 Feel like this could've been published as a long-essay instead of a book though。 。。。more

Good read。 I like how the writer has wrote this book。 Flows quite well and has good examples throughout。 Although, I think - Probably an unpoplar opinion - but as she has written it while being preganant, the part about ''Why Social Media is Ruining Your Life while Pregnant'' is so long and dragging the whole motherhood part。 Takes half of the book pretty much and therefore drags for so long and makes you flip pages。 Was hoping more from it。。。 Good read。 I like how the writer has wrote this book。 Flows quite well and has good examples throughout。 Although, I think - Probably an unpoplar opinion - but as she has written it while being preganant, the part about ''Why Social Media is Ruining Your Life while Pregnant'' is so long and dragging the whole motherhood part。 Takes half of the book pretty much and therefore drags for so long and makes you flip pages。 Was hoping more from it。。。 。。。more

Fear the new。 Fear anything as long as Ormerod is getting his pay check。

Dnf at about 30%I couldn’t relate to this book。 I experience social media in a different way than the author so it was a struggle to pick it up and continue reading。 I don’t say it’s a bad book, it just wasn’t for me。

Laura Bustard

Really interesting, gave me a new perspective on the impact of social media!!!

Must read! Reading now, absolutely excellent, a subject of great importance。 Social media = good and bad。 New norms mean kids must learn pros and cons as young as first viewing of TV, games, etc。 I work in media, highly recommend。 #AdultInterest #SocialMedia #ProsAndCons #MustRead #Parenting #Educators #WhySocialMediaIsRuiningYourLife #KatherineOrmerod #OctopusBooks #HatchetteBookGroup #Sept2018

Interesting points but intensely focused on a female reader audience, and even there filtered toward a particular female audience that is heavy user of social media for self documentating, selfies and the like。I think the title should really be changed to reflect this very specific target reader。

Amber Bailey

I didn’t actually finished the book which is unlike me to do。 I found I was really struggling to get through it and it felt as though it was aimed more at “influencers” than normal every day users or social media。

I expected more depth regarding the use normal people make of social media; I found it to be too influencer-focused。 However, I very much enjoyed the chapter about motherhood and the way research is presented。

This is a well laid out book that covers a lot of information and how it generally effects the regular person on a day to day basis。 Social media has become a huge part of our lives and unfortunately, it’s quite often having a negative impact on us rather than a positive one。 Instead of looking at our local community and comparing ourselves or judging ourselves on who we live near we are now able to do the same thing but with a lot more people all over the world。 It’s definitely a book that make This is a well laid out book that covers a lot of information and how it generally effects the regular person on a day to day basis。 Social media has become a huge part of our lives and unfortunately, it’s quite often having a negative impact on us rather than a positive one。 Instead of looking at our local community and comparing ourselves or judging ourselves on who we live near we are now able to do the same thing but with a lot more people all over the world。 It’s definitely a book that makes you stop and reconsider exactly what you are putting out there, why and what you are receiving back。 With so many social media outlets and ways to connect to them this is an informative and interesting read。 。。。more
