A seminal series from a legendary creator。 "Dragon Ball," a wry update on the Chinese "Monkey King" myth, introduces us to Son Go Son Goku, a young monkey-tailed boy whose quiet life is turned upside-down when he meets Bulma, a girl determined to collect the seven "Dragon Balls。" If she gathers them all, an incredibly powerful dragon will appear and grant her one wish。 But the precious orbs are scattered all over the world, and to get them she needs the help of a certain super-strong boy。 The VIZBIG edition of "Dragon Ball "contains volumes 1-3, bonus color content and updated text。 Before there was "Dragon Ball Z," there was Akira Toriyama's action epic "Dragon Ball," starring the younger version of Son Goku and all the other "Dragon Ball Z" heroes Meet a naive young monkey-tailed boy named Goku, whose quiet life changes when he meets Bulma, a girl who is on a quest to collect seven "Dragon Balls。" If she gathers them all, an incredibly powerful dragon will appear and grant her one wish。 But the precious orbs are scattered all over the world, and Bulma needs Goku's help (and his super-strength) With a magic staff for a weapon and a flying cloud for a ride, Goku sets out on the adventure of a lifetime。。。

Excellent! I loved the anime growing up and decided it was time for me to read the manga。 I love the story and the characters。 It's very fun to see animals and humans interacting on the same level and competing in kung fu matches。 Master Sushi is a pervert but he was exactly the same way in the show。 It does bother me much。 I also love the play on names, a pig names oolong that can shape shift。 Lol。 Highly recommend! I have been using this as my distraction from the all around chaos in the real world, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it。 A direct dive back into my childhood as well。 First time reading the manga, since as a kid I only watched the anime series(in Spanish), and it has a very different feel (from what I remember, about 2 decades ago haha)。 Entertaining and light hearted fun! Goku is adorable, and I never thought I would like an action adventure manga but I did! It was also pretty funny

Why does it need to have so much sexism and lack of consent? I mean, I (angrily) understand that some men might actually think they're funny (they are not), but they are completely not relevant to the story at all!Take all that away and I could even give this 5 stars, the actual plot is very fun, and there are some stupid, but still funny, jokes。 The way it is, it's closer to a 2,5, I chose to rate it 3 here because I'm actually curious to see where the plot goes。 Why does it need to have so much sexism and lack of consent? A bit of background - I loved the Dragon Ball Z anime。 From the ages of 13 to 16 it was one of the biggest influences in my life: I loved it, talked about it all the time, watched it every day, and most of my friends were into it as well。 By late high school and college I fell pretty hard out of love。 I'm sure some of that had to do with me growing up and having to discard anything I now thought was "uncool。" But in addition - The later parts of the show (anything past Frieza) felt lacking in qu A bit of background - I loved the Dragon Ball Z anime。 From the ages of 13 to 16 it was one of the biggest influences in my life: I loved it, talked about it all the time, watched it every day, and most of my friends were into it as well。 By late high school and college I fell pretty hard out of love。 I'm sure some of that had to do with me growing up and having to discard anything I now thought was "uncool。" But in addition - The later parts of the show (anything past Frieza) felt lacking in quality and still does。 It had lost some of it's magic, felt like it was repeating itself, the fights were less clever, and many of the characters felt like cliched clones of each other。So as of today - I would consider myself a fan of Dragon Ball Z - I still enjoy the early parts of Dragon Ball Z and some of the old moves from the 80s and 90s, but it has not been something I have been keeping up with。 More like a nostalgic fondness for some of this stuff, but also an understanding that it has a lot of flaws。 A few years ago, my brother got all of Dragon Ball in Manga form - I had never watched it or read any of it, but didn't have much interest。 I finally decided to read them all this year and give the original series a shot。The initial 10 or so chapters are pretty hit and miss - leaning a little heavier on the miss side。 It feels as though it is searching for a clear identity and tone。 It leans a bit too much on crass, juvenile jokes that don't come across as all that clever。 After those initial chapters though it starts to settle into a more defined tone。 It's an adventure/fantasy/comedy/action manga and it starts to get the chemical balance of those elements just right。 The back half of this first book - which handles the training with Master Roshi and the first Bodukai tournament - were excellent。 Those chapters have that perfect balance of stupid puns, silly sight gags, fun fantasy, and well choreographed action that can be both exciting and funny at the same time。 It's also just wild how much crazy weird stuff happens in each episode。 It feels like it can do whatever it wants, and it's very adventurous and out there and absurd in all the right ways。 This also keeps the pace really fresh and they are almost always (in the back half of this book at least) introducing new allies, enemies, problems, or specials moves。The translation seems really good and does a good job of getting the tone of the characters and their speech patterns。 Jokes translate pretty well。 The art is solid。 Very simple, but Toriyama really knows how to make the important elements take center stage。 His flow is really great too, leading your eye to the next panel, and getting a laugh out of the framing and staging of certain gags。Excited to read more! 。。。more

Brings back a lot of memories of when I was nine and I bought these comics at my local comic book store。 I would read them over and over again as a child and try to recreate the artwork。 I like the collection and bought the second volume to keep it going。 There were a lot of issues that I didn't have, so it was nice to fill in the missing issues that I didn't get to read。 Obviously not a difficult read, but if you're a fan of the manga, I'd suggest it。 Brings back a lot of memories of when I was nine and I bought these comics at my local comic book store。 I would read them over and over again as a child and try to recreate the artwork。 I like the collection and bought the second volume to keep it going。 There were a lot of issues that I didn't have, so it was nice to fill in the missing issues that I didn't get to read。 Obviously not a difficult read, but if you're a fan of the manga, I'd suggest it。 。。。more

Dragon Ball is one of those universes like Star Wars, or LotR, that I just wanted to ditch my own life for and be a part of growing up。 It's just a fun world。 There are dinosaurs, but there are also futuristic capsules that pop out full size houses and motor bikes。 There are flying clouds (that you may ride as long as you're pure of heart)。 There are staffs that can grow to a distance equal to the moon at Goku's whim。 There are martial artists who can focus their dormant energy into a physical e Dragon Ball is one of those universes like Star Wars, or LotR, that I just wanted to ditch my own life for and be a part of growing up。 It's just a fun world。 There are dinosaurs, but there are also futuristic capsules that pop out full size houses and motor bikes。 There are flying clouds (that you may ride as long as you're pure of heart)。 There are staffs that can grow to a distance equal to the moon at Goku's whim。 There are martial artists who can focus their dormant energy into a physical energy blast obliterating mountains。 There are alien species that transform into giant monkey-monsters at the sight of a full moon。 And that's just the first three volumes!Call it nostalgia but I love Dragon Ball, and if you can get your hands on the series I think you will too。 。。。more

These VIZBIG editions are amazing! They are huge which makes the art so much better。 Then add in, I think 3 full color chapters and it makes it even better。 I just can't find anything that can overcome my nostalgia for this franchise as being my favorite anime/manga。 These VIZBIG editions are amazing! I'm reading this series because my husband and I just finished watching the anime Dragonball Z Kai and have watched all of the current episodes of Dragonball Super。 I have enjoyed Super so much that there was a void in my life! Catching up on the anime is a daunting task, but the manga goes a lot quicker。 The art is clean and expressive and a relief to eyes tired from intricate and/or busy art in other series。 What can I say about Dragon Ball that hasn't already been said? This is such a fun manga。 What can I say about Dragon Ball that hasn't been said before? This story even though its titled Dragon Ball isn't about the Dragonballs but about Goku's journey to become the strongest in the world。 Out of this collection of 1-3 volumes, I enjoyed the third one the most because it focused on Goku, Kuririn (Krillin) and Master Roshi。 The humor isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea。 It was written in the 80's by a 20 some year old Japanese guy。 It's sexist and tasteles This is such a fun manga。 What can I say about Dragon Ball that hasn't been said before?
