I wanted to reread this book because I remembered it being amazing when I first read it as a child。 Still just as amazing as I remembered it。 It’s so heartbreaking to read the events of the Holocaust from a child’s point of view who had no idea about the atrocities happening around them。

It was very good but sad。

I was recommended this book by my good friend Meg Readz。 Knowing I had enjoyed When The World Was Ours by Liz Kessler she thought this would be the perfect quick read and she wasn’t wrong。At 150 pages long this book can easily be devoured in one sitting。 The story is told from the POV of Felix and it is the that helps the emotion come through the pages。 His naivety and optimistic outlook at the start of the book broke my heart, he genuinely did not understand what was going on。As a character you I was recommended this book by my good friend Meg Readz。 Knowing I had enjoyed When The World Was Ours by Liz Kessler she thought this would be the perfect quick read and she wasn’t wrong。At 150 pages long this book can easily be devoured in one sitting。 The story is told from the POV of Felix and it is the that helps the emotion come through the pages。 His naivety and optimistic outlook at the start of the book broke my heart, he genuinely did not understand what was going on。As a character you root for Felix and you want to see him succeed。 His story telling skills are brilliant and prove very useful later on in the story。 I also admired how kind and caring he was, particularly with Zelda。 Now Zelda was a funny character! She said things as she saw them and was not afraid to voice her opinion, she too had a kind hearted nature and the bond between her and Felix proved to be resilient。There are other characters that we meet along the way, some are very kind and others were awful。 The scene’s on the streets were harrowing and my heart broke that little but more when the children shared their stories in Barney’s cellar。 To think this was the reality for children in 1942 doesn’t bare thinking about。Morris Gleitzman does a fantastic job at portraying the emotion and giving a voice to many unheard stories。 I have added the rest of the series to my wish list and look forward to seeing how Felix journey turns out。 。。。more

‘ Everybody deserves to have something good in their life。。。。 at least ONCE’。 - Morris Gleitzman a different genre I picked but a shocking one。 Beautiful story of a naive polish, Jewish boy waiting for his parents to pick him up from an orphanage assuming they have left him to go sell books to the Nazis。 Midst of the World War II, he meets children of his age, a dentist and soldiers trying to understand what actually is going on。。。 。。。the Holocaust!! this was the first big series I read when I was younger。 Also sending me on many years to come for my interest in world war 2 books。 I became really interested in the topic learning many things about the horrific event through many stories。

This is a book that surprises you as it unfolds just how deeply emotional it is, from a very child-like perspective the first 80 pages I just had to make it through and remind myself someone said it was good, and sure enough as she said once I got past that the real understanding started coming through。 This would be a good book to stop and have conversations as a group。 A good book on examples of building characters as well。

Overall every interesting I was constantly half of my seat It was a story that each day I was looking forward to finding out what happens next· The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the story could have had more impact on me emotionally for example making you feel sorry for not only Felix and his friends but his surroundings on the train ride to the camp· Overall every interesting I was constantly half of my seat It was a story that each day I was looking forward to finding out what happens next· The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the story could have had more impact on me emotionally for example making you feel sorry for not only Felix and his friends but his surroundings on the train ride to the camp· 。。。more

A quick read。 You really do feel like you are right there with Felix。 Terribly sad to remember what people went through during WWII。

Excellent。 The audio version was read by the author which was v well done。 V moving also v funny in places。 A naive narrator and interestingly I have just finished ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ which also has a naive hero。

'Once' I read a book but about a little boy who experienced the horrors of the holocaust as a jew in the second world war。Written from the viewpoint of a 10 year old little boy, we embark on a journey with him to find his parents。 Hidden from the Nazis in a Catholic Orphanage for over 3 years, Felix is ignorant of the horror happening in his Polish homeland。 He waits in vain for his parents to collect him not knowing their tearful 'We'll never forget you' was their final goodbye。 The book is sim 'Once' I read a book but about a little boy who experienced the horrors of the holocaust as a jew in the second world war。Written from the viewpoint of a 10 year old little boy, we embark on a journey with him to find his parents。 Hidden from the Nazis in a Catholic Orphanage for over 3 years, Felix is ignorant of the horror happening in his Polish homeland。 He waits in vain for his parents to collect him not knowing their tearful 'We'll never forget you' was their final goodbye。 The book is simply written。 The words and viewpoint are those of a child。 His mind at first denies the truth of what is happening- his imagination creating a fantasy world of excuses and explanations for what is happening in the world around him。 His denial and seeming naivety is frustrating for the reader。 His lack of caution will get him killed。 What does come across is Felix's kindness, selflessness, and his concern for others。 As the horrors build, Felix can no longer deny the truth。 Felix loves books and he is a creator of stories and this combination helps him to survive。 In the end all naivety has gone。 He knows what he needs to do survive。 Fantasy and imagination disappear as he embraces reality and its consequences。 。。。more

i first read this book in my sixth grade english class when we were learning about the holocaust for the first time and i’ve gotta say i was captured by this historic fiction from the get go。 i have yet to re-read it 9 years later but i’m sure i would love it just as much

I was hesitant in picking this one up despite all the rave reviews, as I worried it would be another “Boy in the Striped Pajamas ”, rife with historical inaccuracies and perpetuating harmful myths about the holocaust。 I was really pleasantly surprised。 In Once, Felix is anything but ignorant, though he is definitely in denial, and as he slowly experiences the traumas and horrors of the occupation around him and loses his capacity to explain away his denial with clever stories, I was simply devas I was hesitant in picking this one up despite all the rave reviews, as I worried it would be another “Boy in the Striped Pajamas ”, rife with historical inaccuracies and perpetuating harmful myths about the holocaust。 I was really pleasantly surprised。 In Once, Felix is anything but ignorant, though he is definitely in denial, and as he slowly experiences the traumas and horrors of the occupation around him and loses his capacity to explain away his denial with clever stories, I was simply devastated for him。 This book does not sugarcoat。 Felix as a character is likable, his early hope pulls at the heartstrings, and his eventual entry to reality simply crushing。 The supporting characters also do a good job of putting the human element into this tragic historical fiction without diminishing the severity of the events going on around them。This is a quick read and a great story for introducing young readers to the horrors of the holocaust, and actually has a whole series after it。 。。。more

A quick middle grade read on a tough topic in history。 The writing style is both moving and compelling。 The story is shared from a child’s perspective and is a great introduction to WW2 historical fiction for young readers。
