Absolutely gorgeous story， simply told but with great depthAs a child O remember being taken to a zoo where the cages for the apes were tiny and I knew how unhappy the gorilla looked。 What a brilliant way to tell the true life story of Ivan。 Loved it！

I listened to this on audiobook and found it to be a very well narrated story suitable for middle grade readers as well as adults。The story is inspired by the real life Ivan who lived in similar circumstances in a cage at the circus at an exit ramp mall。It gives an interesting take on the POV of an animal living in captivity with both heart breaking moments and funny moments。A beautiful animal story for everyone to enjoy。

Katherine Applegate earned her Newberry Award with this wonderful book based on the the real-life Ivan， the Silverback Gorilla who was finally rescued from a shopping mall attraction after three decades。 This story is so succinctly written， it’s a toss-up as to which I love the most， the story of Ivan or the beauty of her wordplay。
