Absolutely gorgeous story, simply told but with great depthAs a child O remember being taken to a zoo where the cages for the apes were tiny and I knew how unhappy the gorilla looked。 What a brilliant way to tell the true life story of Ivan。 Loved it!

Pretty sad, but ultimately somewhat hopeful。 Definitely cements that I never want to go to a circus again。 I read aloud to my kids and I appreciated the short chapters, but was somewhat choppy。 Definitely hard for an animal lover's heart。 Pretty sad, but ultimately somewhat hopeful。 Definitely cements that I never want to go to a circus again。 I read aloud to my kids and I appreciated the short chapters, but was somewhat choppy。 Definitely hard for an animal lover's heart。 。。。more

I listened to this on audiobook and found it to be a very well narrated story suitable for middle grade readers as well as adults。The story is inspired by the real life Ivan who lived in similar circumstances in a cage at the circus at an exit ramp mall。It gives an interesting take on the POV of an animal living in captivity with both heart breaking moments and funny moments。A beautiful animal story for everyone to enjoy。

“Humans waste words。” Applegate surely did not waste any。 So simple, yet so powerful。 I fell in love with the animals of the Big Top Mall; feeling their joy, sadness, even anger as I read。

Ivan is a gorilla in a circus-themed mall。 He is an artist。 His best friends are Stella the elephant, Bob the dog, and Julia the janitor's daughter。 Ivan and Stella live in small cages and have to perform in a circus multiple times a day。 When baby elephant Ruby joins the team, Ivan and Stella realize they must come up with a plan to get Ruby out of this lonely, confined existence。 I read this book because it was mentioned in TWO books I read recently (The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise an Ivan is a gorilla in a circus-themed mall。 He is an artist。 His best friends are Stella the elephant, Bob the dog, and Julia the janitor's daughter。 Ivan and Stella live in small cages and have to perform in a circus multiple times a day。 When baby elephant Ruby joins the team, Ivan and Stella realize they must come up with a plan to get Ruby out of this lonely, confined existence。 I read this book because it was mentioned in TWO books I read recently (The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise and Right as Rain)。 It felt like the universe was telling me to read it。 :) I really enjoyed the narration。 Ivan has an interesting way of looking at the world and at humans。 I'd recommend this book for all animal lovers。 。。。more

An amazing book! Written from Ivan's point of view, so moving and beautiful。 Even more so knowing that it's based on a real gorilla who lived in a 'cage' for 28 years alone。 I promised myself I wouldn't cry。。。broke that promise! An easy read too, read it in a couple of days。 An amazing book! Both heart-wrenching and heartwarming。 A well crafted story, I enjoy the style of a collection of vignettes telling a single story。 After all, gorillas don't waste words the way humans do。 Both heart-wrenching and heartwarming。 A well crafted story, I enjoy the style of a collection of vignettes telling a single story。 After all, gorillas don't waste words the way humans do。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I would have given it 5 stars, but in the book, Ivan's family were killed waaaaaay harsher than in the movie。 Unlike the movie, after his parents were shot, they had their hands, feet and heads chopped off。 And also unlike the movie, Ruby the baby elephant was basically abused and tempted by Mack with the claw stick。 I was relived too know she was not hurt, but I was surprised that Mack would have one。 I love animals so I was not pleased with this。 But the rest of the book was a great book。 Over I would have given it 5 stars, but in the book, Ivan's family were killed waaaaaay harsher than in the movie。 Unlike the movie, after his parents were shot, they had their hands, feet and heads chopped off。 And also unlike the movie, Ruby the baby elephant was basically abused and tempted by Mack with the claw stick。 I was relived too know she was not hurt, but I was surprised that Mack would have one。 I love animals so I was not pleased with this。 But the rest of the book was a great book。 Overall, I really liked this book。📖📘 。。。more

I read this to a four-year-old, so bear with me on the review, as emotional moments were wasted on having to tell a little monster to keep her head from getting in-between my eyes and the pages, or to stop bouncing my arm because I can't read the words, as they were bouncing to-and-fro。 I enjoyed this book。 The overall plot, about a silverback ape in a small-time circus that does not allow for much room by a man who, while he emotionally cares for his animals, is unable to properly provide for a I read this to a four-year-old, so bear with me on the review, as emotional moments were wasted on having to tell a little monster to keep her head from getting in-between my eyes and the pages, or to stop bouncing my arm because I can't read the words, as they were bouncing to-and-fro。 I enjoyed this book。 The overall plot, about a silverback ape in a small-time circus that does not allow for much room by a man who, while he emotionally cares for his animals, is unable to properly provide for all of his animals' needs。 He is closing in on bankruptcy。 So he finds another elephant, one that is younger, as a means of trying to bring in new crowds。 On that note, the characters are incredibly well written, considering this an odd free-style poetry book written for kids。 I get the characters。 They come alive, from Bob the dog to Stella the elephant, to the human characters Julia, George, and Mack。 I recommend this one for the kids, for sure, but maybe try to not read it to one so young。 Or maybe do, as this is her first full novel that she's ever had read to her, and she is already wanting to know what the next one is。 。。。more

This book was seeing life through the eyes of a mighty silverback that has been in captivity for 9,855 days。。。 27 years。 He marks each new day with an ‘x’ on his domain wall。 A great family read aloud, plenty of hilarious sayings from a gorilla, with the harsh truth of what animals in zoos (and even in the wild) endure。 This book made us curious to research several topics。 First Line: “Hello I am Ivan。 I am a gorilla。It’s not as easy as it looks。”Favorite Quotes: “Poodles are parasites。”“Homewor This book was seeing life through the eyes of a mighty silverback that has been in captivity for 9,855 days。。。 27 years。 He marks each new day with an ‘x’ on his domain wall。 A great family read aloud, plenty of hilarious sayings from a gorilla, with the harsh truth of what animals in zoos (and even in the wild) endure。 This book made us curious to research several topics。 First Line: “Hello I am Ivan。 I am a gorilla。It’s not as easy as it looks。”Favorite Quotes: “Poodles are parasites。”“Homework, I have discovered, involves a sharp pencil and thick books and long sighs。” 。。。more

Katherine Applegate earned her Newberry Award with this wonderful book based on the the real-life Ivan, the Silverback Gorilla who was finally rescued from a shopping mall attraction after three decades。 This story is so succinctly written, it’s a toss-up as to which I love the most, the story of Ivan or the beauty of her wordplay。

Ivan is one of my favourite animal protagonists, besides Aslan, son of the emperor-over-sea, Grover Underwood (does a satyr count?), and Snufkin, Moomintroll's friend。 Ivan's emotions are very much like a human's。 This book, like all other good ones, gives you a different perspective on life, and transports you to the world of a captive animal's dream。 It is suitable for all who are in sixth grade and above。 Overall, a tremendously, bamboozlingly brilliant book。 Ivan is one of my favourite animal protagonists, besides Aslan, son of the emperor-over-sea, Grover Underwood (does a satyr count?), and Snufkin, Moomintroll's friend。 Ivan's emotions are very much like a human's。 This book, like all other good ones, gives you a different perspective on life, and transports you to the world of a captive animal's dream。 It is suitable for all who are in sixth grade and above。 Overall, a tremendously, bamboozlingly brilliant book。 。。。more
