Summary

A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse。 Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield - the weary, demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion—this gripping, semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep。 Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote his ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right。

Hemingway me gusta mucho。 Este libro es bastante irregular porque el final se nota que está muy trabajado en comparación con el resto。 Aun así, deja un gran recuerdo。

How does one review Ernest Hemingway? I had to stop and look up Hemingway's age at the time he wrote it (30) because the dialog between Henry and Catherine was so insipid and immature。 "Oh, tell me you love me。" "I love you ever so much。" "Oh, you'll always love me, won't you?" "Oh, of course, darling。" But then there were tiny jewels scattered among the endlessly repetitive descriptions and sickeningly sweet dialog that made it worthwhile: "I sat up straight and as I did so something inside my How does one review Ernest Hemingway? Tiene algún momento, pero no me terminó de atrapar como historia de amor clásiquísima。 El final es trágico porque sí。

A classic story on so many different levels。 Hard to believe that I hated it in high school。 I wish I had not waited over forty years to re-read it。

This book pretty much left me cold。 At one time in the last century, Hemingway was almost universally acknowledged as the greatest living writer。 I never quite got that then, and decided to revisit one of his books at a more adult age。 The good in this book was the sense of history, of what it was like on the Italian front, but the characters and the basic plot left me flat。 The first part especially was very slow moving and not interesting。 Finally something happens, but then the book tails off This book pretty much left me cold。 At one time in the last century, Hemingway was almost universally acknowledged as the greatest living writer。 I never quite got that then, and decided to revisit one of his books at a more adult age。 The good in this book was the sense of history, of what it was like on the Italian front, but the characters and the basic plot left me flat。 The first part especially was very slow moving and not interesting。 Finally something happens, but then the book tails off。 No characterization, really。 The narrator drinks a lot and seems well liked。 But the female character is kind of a mystery。 She tells the man what he wants to hear, or maybe what Hemingway wanted to hear from a woman, but that was insipid。 The conversations were not good, and at the 3end of the book my feeling was, "So what?"。 。。。more

Ernest Hemingway wrote a damn good novel with A FAREWELL TO ARMS。 The writing style of Hemingway is not for everyone。 Yes, there pages where there is nothing but dialogue。 Yes, there are run on sentences。 Hemingway was not the second coming; he was just a good writer。 What makes this novel arguably his best work was his incorporation of dark romanticism。 In ARMS, Hemingway used the events in nature (i。e。 storms, wind, and waves) to serve as a visual representation of the characters’ sorrow, angs Ernest Hemingway wrote a damn good novel with A FAREWELL TO ARMS。 The writing style of Hemingway is not for everyone。 Yes, there pages where there is nothing but dialogue。 Yes, there are run on sentences。 Hemingway was not the second coming; he was just a good writer。 What makes this novel arguably his best work was his incorporation of dark romanticism。 In ARMS, Hemingway used the events in nature (i。e。 storms, wind, and waves) to serve as a visual representation of the characters’ sorrow, angst, and lack of sound mind。 If you read only one Hemingway novel, this is the one。 。。。more

I think this is the best of Hemingway's novels。 It is more dramatic and the relationship between Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley is the most believable and intense of his four major novels。 I had read this years ago but found it even better this time。 I think this is the best of Hemingway's novels。 It is more dramatic and the relationship between Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley is the most believable and intense of his four major novels。 I had read this years ago but found it even better this time。 。。。more

Life can never be born out of war。The ending was absolutely devastating。 There was a feeling through the final chapters that gave me a sense of dread because I knew what was coming。There was very little introspection from the main character。 He seemed to be more of a hollow vessel to show the horrors of WW1。 But I would rather have an interesting character than an interesting story。It took a chapter or two to get used to Hemingway’s writing, but once it clicked I never put it down。

Okay I guess。 I just felt that there were so many underdeveloped and abandoned storylines that I can’t really pinpoint anything special about the book。 Mr。 Henry really did the bare minimum with just about everything other than drinking; he was VERY good at that。 His work as an ambulance driver wasn’t anything special and Catherine might’ve been the most boring co-main character of any book in the world。 She was half self-absorbed and half utterly co-dependent and incapable of independent functi Okay I guess。 I just felt that there were so many underdeveloped and abandoned storylines that I can’t really pinpoint anything special about the book。 Mr。 Henry really did the bare minimum with just about everything other than drinking; he was VERY good at that。 His work as an ambulance driver wasn’t anything special and Catherine might’ve been the most boring co-main character of any book in the world。 She was half self-absorbed and half utterly co-dependent and incapable of independent function。 During the only true tense/action points of the novel; the only consistent theme was Mr。 Henry chose life over death but Hemingway could’ve done a much better job diving into the mental theories / internal thinking of Mr。 Henry during those moments。 They just seemed brief and abbreviated。 Since this is my first Hemingway novel, maybe I just expected too much? Either way, i wasn’t overly impressed; the novel was okay。 I would outwardly recommend but wouldn’t dissuade anyone from reading it either。 。。。more

I don't know why I was expecting Hemingway to be a dryer read。 It is not dry and a very entertaining read although I am still processing the immense sadness the story has left me with。 The dialogue is very fun。Two people who have nothing meaningful in their lives find each other and fall in love。 The romance is fun although the girl reminds me of a crazy ex I had。 They go through some adventures and then one of them dies at the end。 Leaving the other with nothing at all in this life。 Very sad。 I don't know why I was expecting Hemingway to be a dryer read。 It is not dry and a very entertaining read although I am still processing the immense sadness the story has left me with。 The dialogue is very fun。Two people who have nothing meaningful in their lives find each other and fall in love。 The romance is fun although the girl reminds me of a crazy ex I had。 They go through some adventures and then one of them dies at the end。 Leaving the other with nothing at all in this life。 Very sad。 。。。more

Unclear what all the fuss is about regarding this book。 Dialogue between Frederic and Catherine is so sick and syrupy, that it became almost unreadable。 Not sure what I was missing。

Příběh lásky mezi raněným americkým vojákem a mladou anglickou sestrou。 Kniha se odehrává během 1。 světové války。 Závěr knihy byl smutný, neočekával jsem takový konec。 Kniha se mi líbila。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Compared to the 5 other Hemingway books I've read, this one was one of the easier reads, if not the easiest one for me to read。However, nothing much really happens in the story until the last few pages, and what does happen made for a horrible ending。This is my last Hemingway book on my TBR list, so I hate to end on such a sad note, but that's just how it is。My fav of all was For Whom the Bell Tolls。 Compared to the 5 other Hemingway books I've read, this one was one of the easier reads, if not the easiest one for me to read。However, nothing much really happens in the story until the last few pages, and what does happen made for a horrible ending。This is my last Hemingway book on my TBR list, so I hate to end on such a sad note, but that's just how it is。My fav of all was For Whom the Bell Tolls。 。。。more

Revisiting Hemmingway after many years。 I don't remember if I read A Farewell to Arms in high school or not。 My memory was of the retreat, but I'm not sure if that was from the read or from version of the movie I might have seen long ago。 So, essentially reading this for the first time。 I basked in the writing, from the short, clipped no nonsense sentences, to the stream of consciousness, to the dark reflective passages, such as this: "If people bring so much courage to this world the world has Revisiting Hemmingway after many years。 I don't remember if I read A Farewell to Arms in high school or not。 My memory was of the retreat, but I'm not sure if that was from the read or from version of the movie I might have seen long ago。 So, essentially reading this for the first time。 I basked in the writing, from the short, clipped no nonsense sentences, to the stream of consciousness, to the dark reflective passages, such as this: "If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them。 The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken points。 But those that will not break it kills。 It kills the very good and the very gentle and the vary brave impartially。 If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry"。 The perspective on the war from a minor wounded player in a backwater offers cynical insights and dark humor。 The love story seems oddly tender next to the backdrop of the mayhem at the front or the chaos of the retreat。 The love story, especially the peace and tranquility of a winter in Switzerland, ends with a harshness that saddens。I hope to long remember this book or will know that it will be worth rereading when I have forgotten the story in years to come。 。。。more

I listened mesmerized to the audio version of this book。 The sparse verse of the author matched the bleakness of the war。 The short lived passion and happiness played off against the sense that it was going to end badly。

Novel that follows an American officer on the Italian Front in the first world war (I think semi-autobiographical)。I like his writing style, short and punchy。 Some of the scenes are really funny (I was a big fan of Rinaldi), and parts of it were very atmospheric。 The transitions from dangerous war zone to luxury hotels are pretty abrupt。Enjoyable read!

To be honest, I only enjoyed this novel for the first 100 pages。 After that I was just plugging away to say I had really read A Farewell to Arms。 Not that it was torture, of course, but I struggled to pick it up each time。A major reason was the plot, namely, the lack of it。 This is not a truly plotless novel, but it is about 75% plotless。 We watch the protagonist go drinking in cafes and chat with crusty, battle-hardened Italians ad nauseam, without advancing the story。 Also, as Paul Goodman has To be honest, I only enjoyed this novel for the first 100 pages。 After that I was just plugging away to say I had really read A Farewell to Arms。 Not that it was torture, of course, but I struggled to pick it up each time。A major reason was the plot, namely, the lack of it。 This is not a truly plotless novel, but it is about 75% plotless。 We watch the protagonist go drinking in cafes and chat with crusty, battle-hardened Italians ad nauseam, without advancing the story。 Also, as Paul Goodman has remarked, Hemingway's style makes it seem like things happen to the characters。 The characters themselves never seem to act。 It's hard to get excited about a 280 page novel in which no one seems to act。And what is the point of it all? Part of Hemingway's message is that there is no point, not to the war and maybe not to our lives either。 But this message winds up being an excuse for bad novel construction。 The characters yammer on incessantly (I found almost all the dialogue laughably bad) and life moves on, but I no longer cared about the fates of these, after all, rather annoying and insignificant people。 Yes, the characters were the other big obstacle to me。 The streets of the city and the tables of the bars where the characters drink are all vivid and solid and real。 But the characters themselves seem hollow, not really there。 If it weren't for their annoyingly affected talk, you could hardly tell them apart。There are good parts too, though。 Hemingway is justly famous for his prose, and I would add to that not just his prose alone, but his ability to describe the world in a way that is both concrete and lyrical。 That's truly something great and I never stopped appreciating it。I'll end my review with a sample of that prose style。 The protagonist is in a hospital in Milan with his lover: That night a bat flew in through the open door that led onto the balcony and through which we watched the night over the roofs of the town。 It was dark in our room except for the small light of the night over the town and the bat was not frightened but hunted in the room as though he had been outside。 We lay and watched him and I do not think he saw us because we lay so still。 After he went out we saw a searchlight come on and watched the beam move across the sky and then go off and it was dark again。 A breeze came in the night and we heard the men of the anti-aircraft gun on the next roof talking。 It was cool and they were putting on their capes。 。。。more

3。5/5A lot of this I really like, and I'm glad I read it。 Unfortunately Hemingway can't write a convincing woman to save his life, so I didn't ever particularly care about the central relationship。 3。5/5A lot of this I really like, and I'm glad I read it。 Unfortunately Hemingway can't write a convincing woman to save his life, so I didn't ever particularly care about the central relationship。 。。。more
