Summary

In this groundbreaking book, Dr Louann Brizendine describes the uniquely flexible structure of the female brain and its constant, dynamic state of change - the key difference that separates it from that of the male - and reveals how women think, what they value, how they communicate, and whom they'll love。 She also reveals the neurological explanations behind why。。。
* A woman remembers fights that a man insists never happened。。。
* Thoughts about sex enter a woman's brain perhaps once every couple of days, but mayenter a man's brain up to once every minute。。。
* A woman's brain goes on high alert during pregnancy - and stays that way long after giving birth。。。
* A woman over 50 is more likely to initiate divorce than a man。。。
* Women tend to know what people are feeling, while men can't spot an emotion unless someone cries or threatens them with bodily harm!

Accessible, fun and compelling, and based on more than three decades of research, The Female Brain will help women to better understand themselves - and the men in their lives。

I had to stop reading this book after the first 85 pages。 Absolutely terrible interpretation of psychology, hormones, evolution, and the female brain。 It's biologically deterministic and fails to incorporate any social or cultural factors towards health and biology。 The author also discusses treatments she used for her previous patients and their "hormonal" imbalances and I find it to be a gross medical misconduct because her interpretation of the brain is wild。 Do not recommend。 I had to stop reading this book after the first 85 pages。 Absolutely terrible interpretation of psychology, hormones, evolution, and the female brain。 It's biologically deterministic and fails to incorporate any social or cultural factors towards health and biology。 The author also discusses treatments she used for her previous patients and their "hormonal" imbalances and I find it to be a gross medical misconduct because her interpretation of the brain is wild。 Do not recommend。 。。。more

Stopped reading at the appendices- which seem to be more expansion on certain topics presented in the main text, review of studies, etc- I’m sure good and interesting, but I’ve had my fill of neurobiology for now

From the first 5 pages I was blown away! So much I had no idea about my own body。 Really eye opening about why my good days can be really good and the bad days seemed to have no rhyme or reason, now I found out do。 Highly recommend!

This book was far too short。 Some really interesting points are made, but I would have found it far more beneficial if there was an addendum for predicting 20 something emotional responses or updated research on the long-term effects of iPhones from a neurological stimulus perspective。

My second time reading this book。 I think it’s on my list to mandatory read every 5 years。 Enlightening and empowering。 Who rule the world? GIRLS。

Louann Brizendine tells the story of a woman's life with a focus on the hormonal changes she faces from birth to menopause。 Her focus is on what makes women different from men and how this is driven by the major hormones in a woman's body throughout her life。The story is easily accessible and so packed full of stereotypes that you'll probably be nodding your head in agreement, since most of the conclusions seem to apply well to women as a whole。 But the arguments often fall apart as they are eit Louann Brizendine tells the story of a woman's life with a focus on the hormonal changes she faces from birth to menopause。 Her focus is on what makes women different from men and how this is driven by the major hormones in a woman's body throughout her life。The story is easily accessible and so packed full of stereotypes that you'll probably be nodding your head in agreement, since most of the conclusions seem to apply well to women as a whole。 But the arguments often fall apart as they are either based on cherry picked or dated studies。 Quite often she just blames certain behaviors on the hormone changes and leaves it at that。 She fails to bring any surprising or helpful conclusions to the table and may even be muddling our current state of knowledge with false or old facts。Also annoying is the large number of anecdotal stories she inserts, presumably from patients she's seen over the years。 While a large number of anecdotes can make for good data, the possibility for a biased sampling is huge when you see only people needing help。While this is an easily accessible and short read, the more academic types will likely get little from this book。 。。。more

I believe that ON AVERAGE the points being made in this book about women are true。 What I’m missing is a critical way of looking at the fact that as an individual woman, I can still have an entirely different experience that is no less valid for not fitting “the norm”。As in: on average, men are taller than women。 Doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with a short man or a tall woman, and one size will never fit all。 This book for me was too much the equivalent of “men are tall, women are short, e I believe that ON AVERAGE the points being made in this book about women are true。 What I’m missing is a critical way of looking at the fact that as an individual woman, I can still have an entirely different experience that is no less valid for not fitting “the norm”。As in: on average, men are taller than women。 Doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with a short man or a tall woman, and one size will never fit all。 This book for me was too much the equivalent of “men are tall, women are short, end of story”。 。。。more

There is a lot of good information in this book。 Some sections and information are better supported than others。Brizendine relies on her anecdotal experience as a clinician for much of the book, which is a large part of why I feel the support for some sections is stronger than others。 Some of these narratives drag on a bit and some of them seemed to reinforce stories about "boys and girls" that I didn't feel were adequately explained。 But I'm not the MD。If you're looking for information on this There is a lot of good information in this book。 Some sections and information are better supported than others。Brizendine relies on her anecdotal experience as a clinician for much of the book, which is a large part of why I feel the support for some sections is stronger than others。 Some of these narratives drag on a bit and some of them seemed to reinforce stories about "boys and girls" that I didn't feel were adequately explained。 But I'm not the MD。If you're looking for information on this topic, I would recommend it to you。 。。。more

This book was entertaining and somewhat convincing but also mildly infuriating。 While I do personally believe that our hormones dictate much of our psychological and physiological processes (for both men and women but women in particular), the delivery of that message in this book seemed to get lost in a lot of case study/anecdotal evidence。 This method of delivery made the book seem quite stereotypical in regard to gender roles and shrouded any truth that may have lied in the actual argument。 I This book was entertaining and somewhat convincing but also mildly infuriating。 While I do personally believe that our hormones dictate much of our psychological and physiological processes (for both men and women but women in particular), the delivery of that message in this book seemed to get lost in a lot of case study/anecdotal evidence。 This method of delivery made the book seem quite stereotypical in regard to gender roles and shrouded any truth that may have lied in the actual argument。 It also felt a bit phoney to me to have several pages of notes/references in the back of the book (numbered, by the way) but then absolutely no in-text references in order to match them up? Overall, I will say that the book was entertaining and relatable, which makes it good for a general audience。 However, I expected it to be more evidence-based and I left the book feeling unconvinced。 。。。more

Half the time reading this I wanted to throw it across the room and scream。 Making complete generalisations about women's behaviour based on the few privileged, educated women who attend her clinic is just insane。I'm the mother of three girls, and I can honestly say they do not baby their toys any more than the boys they are friends with。 Girls and boys no longer seem to play separately at school, that's a mostly outdated idea。 Girls certainly fight, they don't just run away meekly when challeng Half the time reading this I wanted to throw it across the room and scream。 Making complete generalisations about women's behaviour based on the few privileged, educated women who attend her clinic is just insane。I'm the mother of three girls, and I can honestly say they do not baby their toys any more than the boys they are friends with。 Girls and boys no longer seem to play separately at school, that's a mostly outdated idea。 Girls certainly fight, they don't just run away meekly when challenged。 I have never felt the need to stare in the mirror for hours, as a teenager or an adult。 And don't even get me started on the idea that baby girls just lie quietly staring adoringly at their mothers as they settle easily to sleep。 Aaargh。 The actual science bits are interesting。 The rest of it makes me very, very angry。 。。。more

I can understand why people find the point of the book frustrating, but I do think we do not give enough credit to the biological processes that impact our decision-making and mindsets。 That does not mean we are totally ruled by hormones, but it is fascinating to read about their changing roles throughout a woman's life。 I can understand why people find the point of the book frustrating, but I do think we do not give enough credit to the biological processes that impact our decision-making and mindsets。 That does not mean we are totally ruled by hormones, but it is fascinating to read about their changing roles throughout a woman's life。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 An interesting look into the inner workings of the female brain and the hormones that affect our brains and emotions。 Definitely helped me to understand why I've felt a certain way and showed that there are literal differences in the way a female/male brain works。 The better understanding we have of our own brains and the chemistry behind it, the better we can understand our emotions and not let them control us。 An interesting look into the inner workings of the female brain and the hormones that affect our brains and emotions。 Definitely helped me to understand why I've felt a certain way and showed that there are literal differences in the way a female/male brain works。 The better understanding we have of our own brains and the chemistry behind it, the better we can understand our emotions and not let them control us。 。。。more

The book can be useful to understand how brain works in general。 You can learn about some functions of the brain and its changes during puberty。 However, after reading this be careful not to write off all female (and male) behavior as "hormones", and do your best to distinguish between socially encouraged behavior from biologically determined one。 Overall it wasn't difficult to read, but I can't say it was very enjoyable (or, as it turned out after some Googling, reliable)。Some moments were just The book can be useful to understand how brain works in general。 You can learn about some functions of the brain and its changes during puberty。 However, after reading this be careful not to write off all female (and male) behavior as "hormones", and do your best to distinguish between socially encouraged behavior from biologically determined one。 Overall it wasn't difficult to read, but I can't say it was very enjoyable (or, as it turned out after some Googling, reliable)。Some moments were just cringey。 There were a few personal stories (some characters of which seemed more like caricatures of men and women than actual people)。 Some bold claims were made, unfortunately not supported by research, or at least undocumented and not shown in this book。 So they seemed far-fetched and dubious。 。。。more

Very interesting read。 As a nurse the scientific reasoning behind why we react the way we do in certain situations is intriguing。 A few moments in the book I thought “that’s how I am” or “oh that’s why my husband does that。” Of course this isn’t going to fit the mould of all women, there will always be outliers, but in general I found it helpful!
