Summary

Brian Staveley's Providence of Fire, the second novel in the Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne, a gripping new epic fantasy series in the tradition of Brandon Sanderson and George R。 R。 Martin。
The conspiracy to destroy the ruling family of the Annurian Empire is far from over。

Having learned the identity of her father's assassin, Adare flees the Dawn Palace is search of allies to challenge the coup against her family。 Few trust her, but when she is believed to be touched by Intarra, patron goddess of the empire, the people rally to help her retake the capital city。 As armies prepare to clash, the threat of invasion from barbarian hordes compels the rival forces to unite against their common enemy。

Unknown to Adare, her brother Valyn, renegade member of the empire's most elite fighting force, has allied with the invading nomads。 The terrible choices each of them has made may make war between them inevitable。

Between Valyn and Adare is their brother Kaden, rightful heir to the Unhewn Throne, who has infiltrated the Annurian capital with the help of two strange companions。 The knowledge they possess of the secret history that shapes these events could save Annur or destroy it。

These books have super interesting concepts and world-building, and I like the story, but I haven't been truly drawn in like I have with my other favorite series, and I think it's because the protagonists aren't competent。 I don't need them to be super human, but they all make (what seem to me to be) ridiculous mistakes and the one who has been trained to be a badass soldier/assassin hasn't won a fight the entire series! Fantastic world building complimented by exceptional character development。 As the 2nd book in the series it really needed to build upon the three main characters without making you wish you were only reading one POV and it accomplished that beautifully。 Along with the three primary POVs this book also offers another POV provided by Gwenna which is a massive bonus。 I didn’t find any moment of boredom while reading this book and was constantly wanting to read another chapter。 My only gripe with t Fantastic world building complimented by exceptional character development。 As the 2nd book in the series it really needed to build upon the three main characters without making you wish you were only reading one POV and it accomplished that beautifully。 Along with the three primary POVs this book also offers another POV provided by Gwenna which is a massive bonus。 I didn’t find any moment of boredom while reading this book and was constantly wanting to read another chapter。 My only gripe with this book is once again with Adare, her character development is quite frustrating, but I honestly believe this is by design。 With that said I still believe this book is 5/5 and I’m looking forward to book three。 。。。more

。。。more

A significant improvement from book # (Emperor’s Blades)。 This book still has a ton of flaws。The world building is better established and connected to the story in this installment (and is probably the best part of the book for me)。 Unlike the first book, I actually care when I learn of the history of humans and their gods and ancient enemies。Character motivation is where this book falls completely flat。 Many characters make choices that are utterly ridiculous and make no sense/are extremely poo A significant improvement from book # (Emperor’s Blades)。 This book still has a ton of flaws。The world building is better established and connected to the story in this installment (and is probably the best part of the book for me)。 Unlike the first book, I actually care when I learn of the history of humans and their gods and ancient enemies。Character motivation is where this book falls completely flat。 Many characters make choices that are utterly ridiculous and make no sense/are extremely poorly explained。 It pulled me out of the narrative and had me saying “huh?” Multiple times while reading。 I don’t mind anachronisms some reviewers have complained of。 What I mind is when I can’t believable rationalize a character’s actions, and that happens multiple times throughout the book (and no, it isn’t just characters who don’t have all the info doing things as a result of that lack of info。。。 even with the info characters have, their actions seem really, really stupid, and sometimes completely out of character)。 Another thing this book has going for it that Blades didn’t is plot。 This time around, I actually cared about what was happening and how things would resolve, so that’s a huge plus。Overall, this is a solid fantasy read, but it doesn’t approach some of the greats of the genre。 。。。more

Starts slow but picks up and improves towards the middle/end of the story。 The character work is definitely improved in this book over previous works。 It still has some of the same problems that the previous; Female characters acting excessively irrational (This is a big problem with Adea and Gwenna), Characters being unaffected by things that should scar them (Triste not being mad at Caden after being tortured due to his decisions) and at times overly focusing on scale opposed to detail。 But th Starts slow but picks up and improves towards the middle/end of the story。 The character work is definitely improved in this book over previous works。 It still has some of the same problems that the previous; Female characters acting excessively irrational (This is a big problem with Adea and Gwenna), Characters being unaffected by things that should scar them (Triste not being mad at Caden after being tortured due to his decisions) and at times overly focusing on scale opposed to detail。 But there are a lot of positives that this book offers the reader。 Interesting political intrigue, believable plots and betrayals and interesting setting/worldbuilding on a scale rarely seen before。7/10 。。。more

The second book in the Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne is a great book--but one I ultimately found less enjoyable than it's predecessor。 The characters are all brilliantly written, their struggles feel real and relatable。 Kaden improved so much in this novel。 The first story was spent with him learning all these seemingly-pointless techniques of the Shin monks--but here we are shown how powerful, how important, these techniques are。 They have the ability to change the entire world。 Accompanying The second book in the Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne is a great book--but one I ultimately found less enjoyable than it's predecessor。 The characters are all brilliantly written, their struggles feel real and relatable。 Kaden improved so much in this novel。 The first story was spent with him learning all these seemingly-pointless techniques of the Shin monks--but here we are shown how powerful, how important, these techniques are。 They have the ability to change the entire world。 Accompanying him throughout this journey are his mentor and defender, Rampuri Tan, and Triste, both of whom are interesting and who seem to represent two different sides of Kaden's own self that constantly conflict--the emotional and the logical。 Valyn's journey in this novel is brutal。 Much of it comes at the cost of his own decisions--he is the new leader of a Wing that is put in a lot of compromising positions。 The combat in his scenes--along with Gwenna's--are some of the most interesting in the book。 To compare two elite soldiers differing perspectives on things is a very cool addition to the book。 Now we get to the part that makes this review a 4/5。 Adare。 Her decisions are terrible; and while not everyone in life makes fantastic life choices you would really hope she would choose some options that are clearly far easier instead of choosing the complex, risky plans every single time。 If you are like me, then you will be extremely frustrated by her continuously stupid decisions。 All of it is driven by her self-righteousness and egoism。 She thinks she can keep doing more than she can, and keeps failing to really make herself into a strong character。 While everyone else in this book struggles to grow, Adare's development is basically locked into a self-defeating loop。 Overall the book is excellent。 The two brothers Kaden and Valyn are incredibly fun to read, and exploring the world through their eyes is a ton of fun。 While Adare is lacking, Gwenna's perspective really adds a lot to the novel in terms of good female points of view。 。。。more
